A hint of the #theater at Rome's port city of #ostia . It was originally built towards the end of the 1st century BC by Agrippa, the great general of #Augustus. In the late 2nd century AD a rebuild and expansion of the theater was started by the notorious Emperor Commodus. Infamous for his obsession with gladiators and combat, he was known to appear at local theaters in the garb of a gladiator to put on controversial spectacles of him slaying wild animals in front of the crowd. While not confirmed, some historians believe this theater was one of those locations, perhaps as the kick off to his grand rebuild of the theater and his "re-founding" of the city. Commodus would die before his theater was completed however, and the completion would be left to Septemius Severus and Caracalla. The finished theater could hold 4,000 spectators, the remains of which can still be viewed on the Decumanus Maximus. In 400AD one last major renovation was conducted which allowed the orchestra level to be flooded with water, allowing ocean and lake scenes to be suddenly conducted to the audiences amazement. #roma #archeology #rome #romeitaly #ancient #ruins #history #italy #italia #romanempire #greeceandrome #travel #nofilter #photography #archeologicalsite #architecturephotography #archeologia

"When we say things like -people don't change- it drives scientist crazy because change is literally the only constant in all of science. Energy. Matter. It's always changing, morphing, merging, growing, dying. It's the way people try not to change that's unnatural. The way we cling to what things were instead of letting things be what they are. The way we cling to old memories instead of forming new ones. The way we insist on believing, despite every scientific indication, that anything in this lifetime is permanent. Change is constant. How we experience chance, that's up to us. It can feel like death or it can feel like a second chance at life. If we open our fingers, loosen our grips, go with it, it can feel like pure adrenaline. Like at any moment we can have another chance at life. Like at any moment, we can be born all over again." . . ~ #quoteoftheday #ruins #antiquity #stopandstare #breathtaking #past #archeologia #archeology #archeologicalsite #art #history #archeologylovers #artlover #architecturelovers #urbanexploration #pompeii #oldtimes #streetphoto #timetravel #backintime #instamoments #igersitalia #igerscampania #igerspompei

. . . 🇬🇧 I am Mamia, public priestess of the city and descendant from an ancient family of #Pompeii. The Senate of the city dedicated a tomb to me in the public area. It is a large circular seat with my name carved on it just outside the Herculaneum Gate. Stop, wanderer, and know that I dedicated a temple to the Genius of the great Augustus in the Civil #Forum!

Impressions of two slave huts and numerous Kalinago houses were found in this spot, at the archeological site in La Poterie, St. Andrew, Grenada. This area was once home to the Kalinago Amerindian tribe who occupied the area in the 1600s. Relics and mapping of the area on the coast and up on the plateau, where I was standing, is in progress. #fascinating #archeology #archeologicalsite #archeological #relics #spanish #french #caribs #indigenous #history #historical #heritagesite #lapoterie #grenada #puregrenada #coastline #beauty #nature #seaside #sea #sun #view #stunning
