With another heavy back day comes another heavy week of deadlifts. This was an all time high for me, I was able to do 430lbs for 8 reps. These videos usually get edited to make them more enjoyable, but I wanted to put this one in as is to set the mood. Right before doing this lift I was super nervous that I wouldn't be able to get 5 reps because I've been on a cut and everyone says you lose strength when you're on a cut. There's definitely merit to that statement, but also I think a lot of it has to do with the mindset you have when you go into the lift, just like anything else in life. The major πŸ”‘ to a solid sprint is a crisp jump. The components of a good jump are keeping your knees bent in an athletic position, turning your feet slightly in the direction you're running to open up your hips, staying low to the ground and maintaining trunk flexion to keep your momentum moving forward, and pumping your arms. The stance I'm in is a steal stance, which is the more difficult stance to be in as opposed to a wide receiver or sprinter stance. So, there is more effort that needs to be exerted to get my body turned 90 degrees in a position to have fluid sprint technique. {On Athleticism} Growing up, I never viewed myself as athletic. I was too afraid of confrontation to play sports and ended up being completely uncoordinated as a result. . When I went into high school I was finally ready to try sports, so I went to tryouts for everything, but obviously got cut immediately. (I didn't understand that everyone else had been playing for 5+ years... I thought they'd teach me how lol) so I ran cross country... don't need special skills to run! But I hated every moment, which only furthered my belief that I wasn't athletic and never would be. . Fast forward to college, I got into a group of meatheads and realized I really liked being in the gym! I started lifting weights and saw my body and mindset change from "wimpy" to "she looks like she can do some shit!" And the best part was... I COULD actually do some shit! I started getting asked what sport I was training for and how I got such an athletic look. I was astonished and so proud of myself! . It's never too late to break the stereotypes you hold about yourself! If you would've asked me in high school if I thought I'd make a good personal trainer, I would have laughed so hard. What drives you to be better than yesterday? . Voluntary suffering has been key to my growth. I'm not a masochist, yet I see the advantage in pushing my body beyond comfort. In moments of discomfort and pain, my mind is free to express the darkness in light. . As an example, I set out for an hour long trail run yesterday in 90 degree heat. I didn't bring water. I knew that in worst case scenario, I would be 5 miles from my truck. . I suppose I could have died from dehydration or rattlesnake bite - but that was a chance I was willing to take. Having trained myself for years, I know these possibilities are close to zero due to diligent preparation of body and mind. . I'm curious. What are your thoughts on voluntary suffering? Does it help you to grow? Does the challenge allow you to step up your game? at Point Loma Nazarene University

Dear athletes, The "all out" mindset you have is a thing to behold! You push yourself well over your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual limit which gets you to the next level of your game. You exert every last drop AND MORE of your soul into your craft - it is just beautiful to watch. Too much of this, though, can create devastating after-effects. Injury caused by over-training will be the only outcome if you keep pushing too hard. But sometimes, we end up on the other side of the spectrum. The "take it easy mindset." The million voices in your head telling you to just take it easy and just rest. You get complacent, you don't improve and you hate yourself for not getting the outcome you want. We must do our best to strive for BALANCE between the spectrum. This, I believe, will create the best results! The same could be applied to your LIFE AFTER SPORTS CHAPTER of the book of your life. Retirement can sway you unconsciously to go to either end of the spectrums. Again, let us strive to attain balance.

Ultimate leg power comes from straight jumping. Box jumps are great but doing box hurdles takes it to a whole new level! It's great for testing your vertical and long jumping. I always tell my clients to aim for the back of the box during a box jump so it's the same thing here except you use more of your core and leg strength/power as well as coordination to clear the box without making contact. Start off easy then work your way up. If you're having trouble getting over the box, try jumping a little farther back each time until you can clear it. I always learn something new from Dr. Stuart McGill @backfitpro every time he teaches. Yesterday at the @perform_better summit I had the opportunity to come on stage and demonstrate the #kettlebellswing and be coached by Dr. McGill . He worked with me to focus my energy and produce a more powerful kime at the top of the swing.
