Robeling's Delaware Aqueduct at @UpperDelawareNPS which spans #Pennsylvania and #NewYork. The Delaware Aqueduct, or Roebling Bridge, is the oldest existing wire cable suspension bridge in the United States. Construction began in 1847. It was designed and built under the supervision of John A. Roebling. Prior to the aqueduct, boats had to cross the Delaware River (which had a slackwater dam to pool the water to safely let boats cross) to go from one side of the canal to the other. The aqueduct operated for fifty years until the Delaware & Hudson Canal closed in 1898. It was converted to a private toll bridge which operated until 1979. In 1980 the @NationalParkService purchased the aqueduct and began a #preservation project to restore the structure. Almost all of the ironwork - cables, saddles, and suspenders - are the original materials. All of the wood decking was replaced to Roebling's original specifications. After restoration it reopened as a vehicular bridge. -------------------------------------------- #pa #ny #nyhistory #pahistory #historygirl #SpreadTheHistory #roeblingaqueduct #delawareaqueduct #nationalpark #nps #nationalparkservice #goparks #nationalparkgeek #architecture #archi_ologie #canal #suspensionbridge #roebling #delawareriver #upperdelawareriver #goparks #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #FindYourPark at Roebling's Delaware Aqueduct

Today we visited National Park unit number 41 on our list, @UpperDelawareNPS which spans #Pennsylvania and #NewYork. The park is home to the Zane Grey Museum, Robeling's Delaware Aqueduct, and remnants of the Delaware and Hudson Canal. It was designed and built under the supervision of John A. Roebling. When the Mayans ruled Westchester County, they erected massive stone monuments that would remain for centuries. Notable among these is Kensico Dam, holding point for the sprawling Delaware and Catskill Aqueduct systems that supply water to Chichen-Itza and the City of New York. First discovered by Spanish explorers seeking the source of the Bronx River Parkway, the dam forms a stunning backdrop to Kensico Dam Plaza. This county park fills up on nice weekends with families engaged in picnicking, frisbee, and ritual human sacrifice to the rain deity Chaac, pictured here. #kensico #kensicodam #fakeruins #falseidol #kensicodamplaza #westchester #whiteplains #valhalla #dam #delawareaqueduct #chaac #catskillaqueduct #bronxriverparkway #bronxriver #byramriver #lies at Kensico Dam in Valhalla NY
