Our last night in our Darwin apartment. It's been great watching the ocean and the huge tide swings. Two days of filming for a yet to be announced advertising campaign with our 4x4 then finish our camper trailer off and hit the road. Day 31 32km covered We've officially hit over half way distance wise covering 885km of the desert. We'd been following a power line for 3 days and today it lead it to one of the biggest villages we've encountered out here. It was time for another hot feed from another random hole in the wall restaurant. Stepping into the empty rectangle there was a woman in one corner, 2 tables in the other and a huge slab of meat. She was straight to work, rolling out 30 dough pouches to slot the carcass in for deep frying. While the lady rolled her little heart out we went over to the supermarket to stock up on our new favourite 'keep away the cravings' foods. 3 loaves of bread each, tubs of butter, chocolate spread and 3 in 1 coffee. Since having these little extras injected into our day I've actually stopped having day long fantasies about food and think it's helped slow my weight loss. Lukes, not so much, his body is still evaporating even with the extra calories. A big bottle of coldish Fanta in hand we went back ready to devour these meat and fat filled (I thought the fat chunks were potato for some reason) pastries. Within minutes they were down the hatch, 7 for luke, 6 for Matt and 5 for me and we were back on the road not long after before we slipped into a meat coma.

Day 25 35km covered The body is an amazing thing. We are in a 24 hour degradation/ regeneration cycle. At the end of our 10 hour days we undo our harnesses at around 6pm. In the short time it takes us to sit down debrief and make up a protein shake our mind has already told our bodies "It's cool, you can shut down now, they are done." Minutes later as we attempt to stand, backs freeze, hamstrings tighten, hips stiffen and our entire bodies seize to a grinding holt. We spend the next hour hobbling around, being careful not to stray too far from a small tent radius until our bodies finally scream, "For god sake get prone already, and don't you dare do this again to me tomorrow." Most nights, in an agreement with my body, I go to sleep thinking I can't possibly do this again tomorrow. But just 10 hours later my body has bounced back. The creaks are gone. The mind is back on board and we are rejuvenated ready for another 10 hours of dust and sand. The days battle takes place again, always resulting in the same stiffness, exhaustion, pain and desperation to retreat into our chamber of rejuvenation. My ankle that was swollen and uncomfortable since day 5 finally had a chat with my brain and decided I wasn't going to give up this walking thing. And a few days ago it simply just got better. Just like that the pain was gone. The body will repair. It will adapt. It will withstand the daily poundings and be ready to fight again the next day.

Day 22 34km covered I've been the team trail breaker for about a week now taking the lead for the boys for no other reason other than I'm the slowest. If I'm not at the front of the convoy I'm way, way behind, blending in with the shrubs. I try keep a steady pace and it works out to be around 4km per hour. This speed I find the best for mastering the art of pondering, not fast enough to exhaust myself, not slow enough to be disappointed in distance covered. Today I pondered my way through an oasis, through sand dunes and across rolling hills. I pondered over the last 5 years of my life and what the next 5 may hold. I pondered through sharp pains in my left knee and aches in my back and pondered up a new business plan to start when I got home. I pondered the details of my next adventure and what it will take to get me there. I pondered away a full 34km of Gobi, with no breaks in thoughts at all. It's rare to have the time to let thoughts evolve like they do out here. I don't think I'd ever really come close to the true art of pondering until I found myself walking the desert at 4km per hour.

GOBI CROSSING Day 16 32km covered Plans evolve. And the evolution of ours has been something that none of us regret tonight after our most satisfying day yet. The Gobi finally decided to give us a break and a combination of the lighter cart, flatter, harder ground and cool weather meant we were not only able to cover more kilometres, but we were able to lift our shredded spirits. We dumped 40kg of food each with our support vehicle before 8am step off and immediately felt happy with our decision. Suffering like I did yesterday isn't fun, and Luke and I have always said, if you aren't enjoying it, why are you doing it. Dropping that bag today made it so much more enjoyable. Being able to stand upright as we walked and seeing this magnificent country. This environment is the most unpredictable I've come across. Yesterday we were stopping at 40 minute intervals, panting, dripping and unable to keep our dry mouths hydrated in 27 degree heat. This morning as I poked my head out of the tent the climate had reverted back to Arctic. It couldn't have been more than 5 degrees. "Now this, this I can walk all day in." Our token Brit was loving the cool change.
