An up close viewing of Beaverhead Rock. Beaverhead Rock, recognized by Sacagawea from her childhood, proved very helpful to the Lewis and Clark Expedition, for it meant her people, the Shoshones, were nearby. If you look close you can see the marmot we had the pleasure of meeting at Ulm Pishkin State Park. He wasn't very shy and let me take his picture. Wikipedia calls marmots "large squirrels" and I find that funny for some reason. at First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park

Aside from the other-worldly nature of the rock formations, Native Americans were attracted to Medicine Rocks because of the many medicinal plants which grew there and the fossil seashells which could be gathered for decorations. The park was listed on the National Register of Historic PlacesΒ in 2017. πŸ“Έ by @nathansatranphoto. β€’ #mtstateparks #mtexploremore #montanamoment #getoutside #projectexplore #exploremore #medicinerocksstatepark #southeastmontana #optoutside at Medicine Rocks State Park

Ulm Pishkin State Park is simply known as "The Buffalo Jump" around here. The natives used these cliffs to drive buffalo to their death where they would then enjoy a big feast! We really enjoyed the sunset and the views, seeing wildlife (mostly getting yelled at by prairie dogs) and killing a rattlesnake! This our 33rd State Park on the #2017stateparkphotothrowdown at First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park

Among the many stories at Milltown State Park is the Glacial Lake Missoula floods that shaped the landscape thousands of years ago. The Salish and Pend d' Oreille also know the confluence as the place of big bull trout and consider it an ancestral home. An eared grebe at #brushlakestatepark Like I’ve mentioned before these birds have the longest period of flightlessness of all flighted birds in the world! (9-10 months) During this time their heart and wing muscles shrink, while their legs and stomach grow! This process is reversed at the end of their fall staging, before migration 😊 #earedgrebe #mtstateparks #exploremore #blsp #brushlakestatepark #montanafishwildlifeandparks at Brush Lake State Park

August 11th, 12th and 13th are the estimated peak night for the #perseids meteor shower. There are multiple meteor showers going on at the moment, but the Perseids are the best to be seen at the moment. Great little day trip to Bannack State Park, MT. Β This is a historic mining town (Ghost town), nestled down in a cute little valley with a creek running by. There are two camp grounds near by so great for RV'ing or just making a weekend of it with a tent. They do wonderful haunted events around Halloween. It was so worth the drive.

The rocks in Painted Rocks State Park were intriguing! The yellow, orange, and green lichens made the cliff walls look purple in the morning light! We had so little sleep the night before that driving to this remote location without caffeine proved very difficult. But we made it! Who thought bugs could be so pretty?! I didn't notice there were so many of these little insects flying around while we took golden hour photos at Clark's Lookout State Park. It turned out to be a pretty cool effect!

1
@elishamack

Our stop at Clark's Lookout State Park led to, as you may guess from the name, amazing views! On August 13th, 1805, Captain William Clark climbed up this hill and had the same incredible 360 degree views of the Beaverhead Valley. This fun little park is #22 in our #2017stateparkphotothrowdown that we are competing in with friends! @reallymtphoto @mtstateparks

An up close viewing of Beaverhead Rock. During this crazy "state park challenge" it's been amazing the places that we've stopped and gone out of our way to see. I have lived in Montana my whole life, and I never knew this rock formation stood tall in this prairie valley, I never knew it was a significant rock for explorers 200 years ago, and I never knew I would treasure this photo of me and this rock. Still #21 in our #2017stateparkphotothrowdown @reallymtphoto @mtstateparks

The sunset light when we were at Beaverhead Rock State Park was incredible! Sacagawea said this rock formation looked like a beaver's head when she was guiding the Lewis & Clark through the area. And I'd have to agree, especially driving from Dillon, Montana as we did. This park is #21 in our #2017stateparkphotothrowdown @mtstateparks @reallymtphoto

We viewed a little piece of history at Anaconda Smelter Stack State Park. I know it's far away, but this smoke stack is almost 600 feet tall, and was finished being built in 1918. And it's #20 in our #2017stateparkphotothrowdown @reallymtphoto

Walking composition. Shooting practice for new young archers. So lovely here, an open-air archery range on state park land. Totally quiet. Is there a way to talk about the restorative power of nature without being repetitive and cliche? Lost Creek State Park is a beautiful spot we discovered a couple years ago, so it was fun to venture back again. It has limestone cliffs lining the area that tower 1,200 feet from the canyon floor, but my favorite part is the lush, green waterfall! A beautiful find! I wish I was chasing waterfalls like back in 2016!! Remember those days, @lanaexplores ? This park is #19 in our #2017stateparkphotothrowdown @reallymtphoto

It is crazy to stand and imagine these buildings from 150 years ago. Granite Ghost Town makes one pause to wonder.

To all of you thinking of exploring Granite Ghost Town near Philipsburg, MT... now is the time! Or actually, don't go there. Forget I said anything. Forget these photos. 😜 @reallymtphoto

2
@travelwithreallymontana

We were blessed to have an all-wheel drive, high-clearance vehicle while making our way up the mountain to photograph Granite Ghost Town. It makes sense now that you can't access this crazy place until summertime, and the sign at the bottom of he road says "Travel at Your Own Risk!"

4
@mtspamericorps

Whoa is summer flying by! Back in May our program welcomed aboard four new members, all of whom are serving in Eastern Montana. We took the opportunity to take it on the road and in doing so started forging new partnerships. . Carolyn of the @montanaaudubon took the time out of her busy schedule to teach us about the Yellowstone and Eastern Montana river ecosystems. Not only that, but we received top notch information on presenting environmental education programs. Thanks Carolyn! at Montana Audubon Center

Exploring Granite Ghost Town felt like uncovering history hidden on a mountaintop. This is a state park definitely worth going out of your way to spend time in.

1
@elishamack

Granite Ghost Town State Park was incredible to explore! The mine was discovered and the miners found $40,000,000 in silver and that is back in 1872! The remnants of buildings found hidden in the woods and on the mountainside were both mysterious and awe-inspiring! We wanted to spend a few days here at our #18 park in our #2017stateparkphotothrowdown @reallymtphoto @mtstateparks
