Pronghorn: Over the Sagebrush and Under the Fence Wildlife friendly fencing and obsolete fence removal projects are one area we focus on at Wyoming Wildlife Federation. One of the animals that benefits most from these projects are pronghorn, a species that is more abundant on the Wyoming sage-steppes than any other place on Earth. This is in large part because of our large tracts of intact sagebrush habitat, something else close to our hearts at WWF. Often called antelope, pronghorn are not really related to African antelope and are actually closer to giraffes. Taxonomically, they are an orphan species, the last surviving member of a family that has otherwise been extinct for millennia. Pronghorn evolved to run fast and far in sagebrush and shortgrass prairies. As humans started using fences to divide up the west, they were impacted more than other ungulate species like deer and elk because of another quirk of their evolutionary history. Pronghorn don’t jump, at least not very well. Interestingly, it’s not that they can’t jump, it’s just that pronghorn evolved to maximize their forward speed and never had to deal with anything taller than a sagebrush, so jumping isn’t a natural behavior for them. As a result they generally go under, rather than over, fences and they need us to remove or modify fences so the antelope have a home where they can roam. To find out more about the pronghorn visit our website and become a member of the Wyoming Wildlife Federation #wwf #sciencefriday #protectwildlife #publiclands #wyoming

Sunrise at Crater NP.. . . The trip was a blast, but the undeniable favorite was Oregon and Crater NP. Wildfire smoke cut visibility for the entire trip, but we were fortunate enough to have a clear morning for this sunrise hike. First time to Crater, and I have to say, it's one of my new favorites.

Another image from the Sierra Nevada mountains, and a pretty surreal sunset. The effect from, what I believe, was forest fire smoke in the upper atmosphere was amplified by the use of a polarizing filter. I have a new blog post on this image and forest fires, which have been ubiquitous in the West during the summer months. This fire season has been particularly bad. Four years ago when I officially decided to start documenting my journey and sharing what I'm learning and experiencing I never thought I'd be where I am today. Sitting in a room full of passionate hunters who embody what it is about hunting that I hold dear was a surreal experience. I will say that I was so nervous to be in change of video and audio that I forgot to turn the external mic on for about 30 seconds 🙄 Some things never change 😂 If you are interested is seeing the Q&A portion from the Women's Hunting Social hosted by @artemis_sportswomen and @mtwildlife, you can find the event in the event section of the @mtwildlife Facebook page. The video is posted in two parts on the event feed. Happy birthday, Malheur! On August 18, 1908, thanks to the advocacy efforts of Portland Audubon’s founder William Finley, President Theodore Roosevelt established the third wildlife refuge in Oregon, known today as Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, a preserve and breeding ground for more than 320 migratory and native bird species along the Pacific Flyway. 20% of the world's population of White-faced Ibis breed and nest in the 187,757 acres of diverse habitats! We set out for a hike. “That way. You’ll find the trail,” we were told. And we did. We were alone. Except for these two. Archeologists. Employees of the National Park Service. Civil servants. From whom we learned this well-worn track, the Liberty Cap Trail, is a John Otto original. Built in 1909 - two years prior to President Taft’s official designation of the Colorado National Monument under the authority of the Antiquities Act. Built by John Otto with help from his mule and a bit of dynamite, the Liberty Cap Trail has required minimal maintenance over its 108 years. The archeologists are sketching and surveying. In anticipation of future trail work. A trail project that will honor the historical integrity of the trail and perhaps meet the approval of one John Otto. Their work, here on public lands, goes largely unnoticed. But it’s just this, the work that one does when no one is watching that is the truest test of character. (h/t John Wooden) /// "Some folks think I'm crazy but I want to see this scenery opened up to all people." - #johnotto at Colorado National Monument

Adventure biking can take on a whole new meaning in the Idaho backcountry. This is a section of 9 mile, 2,500 vertical, 2.5 hour ride where the trail is in "better" condition…at least there is one to deviate from.
