#ThrowbackThursday from spring 2017. Looking forward to all our guys coming back soon. In the bounce lab with Penn Men's Basketball. Here @t.hamilton11 is landing on the Just Jump Vert Mat (measures your vert) while doing resisted jumps on the Vertimax. Utilizing two pieces of equipment to get the desired training effect of explosive vertical jumps. For resisted jumps to be most effective they should not reduce your vertical jump height by more than 30%. For example if your vertical jump is 30 inches with no resistance, you should use a resistance that will allow you to jump 70% of that and jump 21 inches. If there is so much resistance where you are only jumping 15 inches it is too much resistance and your jumping mechanics will likely be altered by the heavy resistance. So check your ego and lower the resistance so you can actually train for power and recruit high threshold motor units when that is the goal. So here I am seeing if Tyler is around that 70 mark of his unresisted jump. The Vertimax allows you to adjust the strength of the cable resistance, which we did here so he could hit around 70% of his normal jump height. @skern12 this is the exercise i was talking about. I like Clean Pulls & i like Trap Bar Deadlifts, So i tried to combine them. Try warming up to a weight you like and do 4 sets of 5. If you cant explode all the way up to the tip of your toes, the weight is too heavy. Want a quick fix to increase your athleticism? Do some standing calf raises! The calf Achilles complex is basically the body's inbuilt spring, the calf is the last muscle group to have contact with the ground when jumping and the first and last when running. Strengthening the calves will improve the SSC (stretch shortening cycle), search it up ๐Ÿ˜‰. Perform the calf raise by going up onto your big toes and then pause at the top and bottom of the movement, do not bounce. I also do not recommend using a calf block as studies have shown it can damage your bursa which are basically fluid filled sacs to help lubricate the joint. Also performing calf raises on the floor and not a calf block is more sport specific. Hope this helps! I am driven by failure. The jumps I cannot slay are ones that grow me. Being a very determined jumper, the ones I cannot achieve cause the greatest changes in me. On my best days after slaying big jumps I feel damn good, but it's just feeling good and leaves me feeling content. On my worst days, I feel like shit and the failure sets in hard making me really think how to overcome these obstacles at any cost. Plateaued in your vertical jump? It might be time to change the way you train. Since the vertical jump is all about leg power, power=force x speed. You have to train these components e.g. Maximal strength, speed-strength and speed (I encourage you to look at the force velocity curve). Your vertical jump will increase with each method but you will eventually reach a point when you plateau and begin to see diminishing returns (trust me, I know from experience). This is when you should cycle or change the strength method you use. The most dominant leg muscles in the vertical jump are the calves and quads due to the biomechanics of the movement, but that's not an excuse to neglect your hips, glutes and hamstrings as they will help with increasing your running vertical (pictured in the photo above). Also don't neglect your lower back, back, abdominals and shoulders as they provide stability, extra power and speed in the vertical jump. Make sure you strengthen your tendons and ligaments before doing plyometrics and jumps and this will decrease your chances of injury. Also don't go in too hard, just start of with basic plyos and jumps and work your way up in difficulty. A little one foot love today! The one foot jump and I have a long patchy history. Due to some ankle injuries I suffered playing in college I lost my one foot dunk for years and dealt with residual pain for years after which stopped me from getting it back each time I tried (thats what happens when you play a full college season on a hurt ankle). Needless to say have been working on it for the last month or so and it will be better then ever! at Power Health and Performance
