Repost from @chrisabeardsley - Strength is velocity-specific, which means that training with a light load and a faster bar speed leads to preferentially greater gains in high-velocity strength. In contrast, training with a heavy load and a slower bar speed leads to preferentially greater gains in low-velocity strength. Previous research has identified that there is an optimum balance of force and velocity during any athletic movement, for any given individual. Researchers can thereby calculate an optimal force-velocity profile for an athlete, as well as their current actual force-velocity profile. When the actual force-velocity profile is different from the optimal force-velocity profile, this leads to poor performance. Actual force-velocity profiles can differ from optimal force-velocity profiles EITHER by being too force-focused (there is a velocity deficit) OR by being too velocity-focused (there is a force deficit). Training to reduce the force deficit (by using heavy loads) or to reduce the velocity deficit (by using light loads) could therefore improve performance dramatically. This study investigated that question. -------------------

One of my favorite exercises for developing explosiveness is the depth jump (not shown in this video... it involves stepping off a box and jumping quickly up onto another box). The reason why this exercise is so effective is because it essentially increases your mass due to the effects of gravity. Therefore a higher muscle demand is necessary to produce more Force at a fast Velocity... and from physics, POWER (or explosiveness) = Force x Velocity. The issue with depth jumps for larger athletes (or people with problematic joints) is that increasing your relative mass causes an increase in jarring forces onto your joints as you're landing and preparing for the jump. A way to avoid this issue while still providing a similar stimulus is to use resistance bands. The bands essentially PULL me into a squat/RDL position (eccentric lengthening) faster than what I would be able to generate on my own... similar to the landing phase of a depth jump. Weakness Wednesday: Pull-ups and Vertical have always been two of my bigger weaknesses, so I've been pushing them hard lately. hit 6x5 wide-grip today Without a band for the first time. Ever. The margin for error when it comes to plyometric jumps is very small. We all have some battle scars from the box jumps. So I added a close up in one of the clips to show the thin line between a successful jump and fucking up your shins. Today I was able to increase 2 more inches to my vertical jump (42") Proud of Bee as she overcame her fears and increase her jump to the 24 inch box. You have to believe.... I love jumps because much of it it's mental, believe in your ability and visualize making the jump. Weighted pistols: 25x4 _______________________________________________________ Have begun incorporating pistols for a bunch of reasons, several of which are... - they involve a full range of motion and strengthen the bottom stretched position - have little to no loading on back - are easy to set up and progress with - demand high levels of strength but also stability and control. It's all about the power in your glutes! Some rules to consider when performing the hip thrust: 1️⃣ do not make direct eye contact with anyone else in the gym 2️⃣ pulling a silly face when you squeeze at the top is mandatory πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ If your glutes are underdeveloped your athletic potential is compromised as strong glutes are critical for jumping, sprinting and changing direction. Hip thrusts improve your strength, speed and power by teaching optimal hip extension. Back strength isn't a limiting factor during the hip thrust allowing you to maximally load the glutes. After working round an injury for the past few weeks I have found the hip thrust to be an extremely effective way to load the lower body without putting strain on my ankle. The glute expert @bretcontreras1 has made a number of tutorials on how to perform hip thrusts correctly. But key messages are make sure your shoulders act as a pivot on the bench (no sliding around) and you keep looking forward. Some form of padding will also protect your hips from bruising.

Dumbbell Squat Jump . Here's a simple movement to develop lower body power to increase your vertical and improve athleticism . The focus should be on the quality of the execution rather than quantity. Although jumping for height is important, full hip extension, good joint position, and sound landing mechanics are key . For performance, 2-4 sets for 3-6 reps are plenty for athletes. Increase external load once mechanics are solid .
