College athletes starting back up last week. We spend the first phase of our college program unwinding and reconditioning their bodies. Physically, each athlete is walking into the gym at a different spot based on their college training program and/or the season they are coming off of. #unwind #recondition It's important to sit down with EVERY athlete to discuss not just their goals but also to get an understanding of how their body feels and what levels off stress they have been putting their bodies through over the past 4-8-16-24weeks. I havn't most of these athletes since Winter break. When's the last time these student-athletes gave their bodies a rest? Where are they physically as well as mentally? Get a full understanding of both the micro AND macro intricacies of their overall program. # This training session: We focused on mobility, activation, and testing before hopping into their lift. # Note: We do NOT do weight lifting testing with our athletes. #Repost @chrisabeardsley (@get_repost) ใƒปใƒปใƒป According to historians and archaeologists, the ancient greeks used hand-held weights called "halteres" to increase horizontal jumping distance in athletic training or competitions. For some reason, this potentially valuable strength and conditioning practice was lost until very recently. In the last few years, a group of researchers have begun investigating what happens when similar hand-held weights (either dumbbells or weight plates) are used in training. This preliminary study in youth soccer athletes showed that using halteres during jump training involving both vertical and horizontal jumps caused superior increases in both horizontal jump distance and vertical jump height, in comparison with a standard jump training program without hand-held weights. Whether this improvement occurred because of the greater loading causing increased strength gains, or because of other changes involving the stretch-shortening cycle, however, is unclear.

In accordance with the force-velocity relationship, the โ†‘ load leads to a โ†“ movement speed, and this allows the muscles to produce a โ†‘ force for โ†‘ time. When performing jump squats, vertical jump height is โ†“ compared to unloaded jumps, even though vertical impulse is the key determinant of vertical jump height. This is because the โ†‘ vertical impulse is not enough to overcome the โ†‘ weight of the body plus the barbell. We can easily see this if we calculate vertical impulse relative to the total system weight (body plus the barbell). In contrast, when using light hand-held weights to perform horizontal jumps, both horizontal and vertical impulses are โ†‘, even when calculated relative to the weight of the total system (body plus the hand-held weights). Isometric Back Squats to parallel today worked up to 295 for sets of 3, felt great! These are always tough and are a very advanced squat. If the proper progressions were completed before hand this is a great way to improve RFD (rate of force development) as long as you explode as much as you can out of the bottom.
