SIMPLE DOESN'T MEAN EASY. I'm not usually one to rant but this is something I have been seeing so much recently. People wanting complex programming because simple programs are "too easy" so they think they need something special. I think the issue is that people aren't willing to push themselves and become uncomfortable in the simple things so they believe they need fancy exercises to get results. I challenge you to push yourself to the limits in the most basic of exercises and see what happens to your results. I bet you getting the results you want is more fun that doing gimmick exercises/programs that "look fancy." Rant over. #rant #simplenoteasy #challenge #justdoit #pissedoffforgreatness #excellence #teamfortitude

#Repost @chrisabeardsley with @repostapp ・・・ Vertical jumping is a key athletic skill, and strength coaches often use a range of different methods to improve it. Consequently, it is valuable to consider how the biomechanics of vertical jumps differs between athletes of different abilities. This study compared two groups of soccer athletes. One group were able to jump quite a bit higher than with the other: the difference was around 11cm for the countermovement jump with arm swing. Other research shows that when the difference in vertical jump height between athletes is small, there are minimal differences in force production, and the factors that differentiate between high and low performers are impulse and power. In this study, the group who jumped higher did display greater net joint moments, although the differences in power and work done were much greater. Surprisingly, the largest differences between groups occurred at the hip and ankle joints (and not at the knee joint), and the higher performing group also tended to adopt a more hip-dominant jumping strategy. This suggests that for making very large improvements in vertical jump height, substantial strength gains may be necessary, with a particular focus on the hip extensors (gluteus maximus, adductor magnus, and hamstrings). -------------------- #sandcresearch #strengthandconditioning #strengthtraining #strength #sportsscience #biomechanics #research #infographic #infographics #hypertrophy #muscle #gains #fit #gymlife #athlete #athletes #athletic #power #powerful #explosive #verticaljump #vertical #jump #jumpheight #basketball #volleyball #soccer

@bjgaddour is a wealth of knowledge, great info. Makes me really want to work on my wrist mobility so I could nail this lift #Repost @bjgaddour with @repostapp ・・・ PERFECTING THE PUSH PRESS! I just started working the push press back into my routine and I thought I'd share some really helpful tips in case you do it or would like to try it. The push press is basically a quarter squat into overhead press and you use your hips and thighs to help drive the weight overhead. In terms of benefits, it's great for developing the shoulders and triceps and training counter-movement to rapid extension of the knees and hips. Studies have actually shown this to be a great move for increasing vertical jump. It can also help you get used to heavier loads to improve your strict overhead press. The first tip is to use an @mbslingshot hip circle (or mini-band) wrapped above your knees. I first saw this tip from Kelly Starrett of @mobilitywod. This will force you to push your knees out and drive through your hips more while still keeping your trunk upright. One of the big form faults with push presses is jamming the knees too far forward. The second tip is to use a grip that's right in-between what you'd use for a strict overhead press and a front squat. You need enough of a shoulder shelf so that the bar doesn't roll forward as you dip down, but not too much as you need to quickly move into a stable pressing position. The third and final tip is to start with a weight you can strict overhead press for at least 10 reps and do sets of 5 reps focusing on form, technique, and max power. Treat each rep like it's a single. Then progressively build the load up from there from session to session. #PushPress #VerticalJump #Shoulders #WorkoutWednesday #BJGaddour #Fitness #InstaFit #Power

• Trap Bar Deadlift ___ Here's a sneak peak of my future post "Top 5 Exercises To Improve Your Vertical Jump For Volleyball.” • The trap bar deadlift is a staple for building a vertical jump. There are many variations of the deadlift, but I specifically like the trap bar deadlift. • The picture on the left is me approaching and about to take off for a jump serve. As you can see, the trap bar deadlift mimics the jump motion. • Another reason I like the trap bar deadlift, is because it is safer compared to a conventional straight bar deadlift. The set up of a trap bar reduces stress on the low back, since the weight is closer to the center of mass which reduces the moment arm. • There are many other reasons, why I like the trap bar deadlift when training to improve vertical jump performance. Stay tuned for my next post where I discuss it in more detail and provide four other exercises to improve your vertical jump.

Nary a fast sprinter without powerful hip extension & hip flexion 🤔 Simplified -speed is picking em up (flexion) & putting em down (extension). Moving one's center of mass down a track or field with speed requires unilateral stabilization and force. While one leg is driving hard against the ground the opposite leg must equally and forcefully come up from the ground 🔄 This is why elite sprinters' legs look like #pistons firing in a car. It's important to incorporate a steady repertoire of single leg modalities in training to mimick these actual speed necessities. Athletes only training on two legs ie. squats / cleans, etc. are neglecting the neural demands of the body in actual competition. 400m sprinter @irun_emme doing what she does... ••••• Single Leg RDL Hip Thrust (1 leg hip extension) forces the glutes, trans abdominals & spinor erectae to stabilize the pelvis, while the glutes and hamstrings load and explode the center of mass forward. This is exactly what occurs in all phases of sprinting particularly the start. ••••• Hanging Physioball Pike works the psoas musculature which is vital for core stabilization since it connects the spine to the pelvis. Only AFTER the pelvis is stabilized can the abdominals and hip flexors do their work of powerfully lifting the legs (hip flexion) #100m #200m #400m #sprinter #speedtraining #trackandfield #trackster #verticaljump #footballtraining #hoops #baseball #softball #slappers #soccer #combinetraining #nfl #mlb #nba #functionaltraining #coretraining #rdl #forceproduction #vbt #stabilization #sportsperformance #thenextlevel #dipt4sports

Afternoon Insta and Facebook teams, here is the second of my #ORR2017 boys @cuddy_boombs with his 12 Week results. This wasn't a "12 Week Transformation" this was a 12 Week Off-Season football program!! to get him ready for the upcoming Gridiron Queensland season. Brendan (Buddy) plays Offensive Guard (and if we can keep improving his mobility Centre!!) for the Brisbane Rhinos. Photo on the left is from the start, photo on the right is at the end of the 12 weeks. Some highlights from his 12 weeks are as follows. - 1RM Squat went from 210kg to 240kg!! - 1RM Bench went from 120kg to 150kg!! - Vertical Jump went from 17 Inches to 19.3 Inches - Broad Jump went from 182cm to 199cm - 20 Yard Shuttle went from 5.53sec to 5.37sec As you can see he has smashed it over the past 12 weeks with massive improvements in Strength and Power which will help transfer over to his positions and provide a great base for the Rhinos O-Line!! Congratulations mate you should be proud when you look at this, as I know I am to be your coach!! #Bigger #Faster #Stronger #football #gridiron #gridironqueensland #OLine #Guard #Centre #brisbanerhinos #highlights #1RMSquat #1RMBench #verticaljump #broadjump #20yardshuttle #power #prouddad #proudcoach #strengthcoach #strength #strengthandconditioning #americanfootball #athlete #personaltrainerbrisbane #pt

This has to be the most epic video I've seen in a long time... @Regrann from @xanderpharrison - ALMOST straight legged landing on a 34 inch box. Soon... . . When doing max effort jumping the landing can be very forceful. Usually the purpose of box jumps is to reduce that amount of impact upon landing. That can be achieved rather easily without having to stack boxes on boxes as high as possible. ONE reasonable box, then jump as high as you can and land on it. . . . #boxjumps #vertical #verticaljump #verticaljumptraining #legday #sportspecifictraining #strengthandconditioning

#Repost @athlete.x with @repostapp ・・・ Every concentric expression of force (like jumping off the ground) is preceded by two things - an eccentric loading and an isometric transfer of force. The eccentric and isometric strength characteristics of an athlete will determine their ultimate concentric abilities. Generally, the best athletes in the world are able to absorb and huge forces eccentrically, stop and reverse them isometrically, and then concentrically push/jump/press etc. The concentric is what we all love - the weight we stand up with in a squat and press up bench. Consider the isometric capabilities of the athlete to be the gatekeeper for concentric force production. By working with abrupt stops in your training (such as pulling the bar to the chest and then abruptly stopping the bar in a bench) you can start to build high levels of isometric strength which will allow for better performances down the road. You can only put out what you're able to absorb and then reverse (I.e. you can't stand up with a squat load that is greater than your ability to lower and then stop with and reverse upwards), so if all you do is focus on concentric training, you're shooting your self in the foot. Athletes who are slow in any push-pull exercise or lag at the bottom of a countermovement jump are people who are in great need of better eccentric and isometric strength. If you can't drop from a bodyweight squat and land without any amortization in the lower limbs, you're lacking isometric strength. By developing the abilities to load up (eccentric), transfer/reverse (isometric), and then push out (concentric), you will build a complete athlete who can maximize and realize their athletic potential.

For this drill we are looking for specific positions to optimize the landing leading to a better jump. Here's Canadore College guard @jakerae_ demonstrating a stiff deceleration and rapid acceleration. I also love this drill for concentric ankle strength to improve ankle stiffness; for those with sloppy feet.
