Good morning Holmewoodians! I realise I don’t share nearly enough pictures of our stunning collection of mature trees, so here is a snap of one of our oldest Holmewoodians, this beautiful ageing specimen of Castanea sativa - the sweet chestnut 🌰 .
Introduced by the Romans, beloved by squirrels and European Christmas markets, the sweet chestnut of Kent had a bumper crop this year.
I don’t know if you can see but they are one of the trees which twists it’s central trunk as it grows. Here in the northern hemisphere they develop what is called a right-handed grain - in the southern hemisphere it’s the opposite, which some scientist put down to sun positioning and prevailing winds. Whatever the reason, a twisted grain can make the tree less prone to breakage during a storm which gives it a clear evolutionary advantage for developing.
