#Hafenmuseum ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Sauger IV was built in 1909 by the society for mechanical engineering in Lübeck and has been in operation for rebuilding the port and rivers for 80 years. The suction machine pumped sand and mud, which was dug by excavators from barges to the bank. Up to the time of its shutdown in 1989, it extracted an amount of sand which would raise up Wilhelmsburg, Europe’s largest island in a river, by half a metre. The suction machine fueled by oil contains a threefold expansion steam engine for the extracting pump and a double expansion steam engine for the water pump. In 1996, the Hafenmuseum took possession of the ship as a museum piece, which had been taken out of service. Since then, a voluntary crew takes care of Sauger IV and demonstrates it regularly. You can visit the accommodation for 13 people, the galley, two guardrooms and the toilets. @histmuseenhh | #52Museums #historischemuseenhh #museum #history #Germany #Hamburg ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📷 Sinje Hasheider

#Hafenmuseum ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Our volunteers look after the floating objects. Here you see our volunteer Rolf Hartz on the museums’ barge. The so called Kastenschulte H11347 is from 1913. Barges do not have their own propulsion. Barges were either moved by hand with peek hooks or towed by other motorized barges. They transport goods from the seagoing ships to the warehouses in the harbor or in the surrounding areas. The barges were operated by Ewerführer meaning the conductors of these speical boats, also affectionately called "Schutenschubser" - pushing the boats through the harbour! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @histmuseenhh | #52Museums #historischemuseenhh #museum #history #Germany #Hamburg ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📷Sinje Hasheider

#Hafenmuseum ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Has anyone ordered a 🚕 taxi? 😃 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This taxi was actually used in the port area. At the time, the shed master was driven to the shed, so that he did not have to run so far and got to his workplace faster. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @histmuseenhh | 52Museums ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #historischemuseenhh #museum #history #Germany #Hamburg

#Hafenmuseum ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Huge cranes! These are the most important objects for visitors. You can see them from far away and they have a soul. Especially when they are under steam. ❤️ Some of our floating objects have steam engine, making sounds that seem so unfamiliar in today’s times! It is a very impressive full body experience, when they are in action. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @histmuseenhh | #52Museums #historischemuseenhh #museum #history #Germany #Hamburg ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📷 Anna Symanczyk

#Hafenmuseum The heart of the Port Museum on the Bremer Kai of the Hansa Port is a quayside shed: Kaischuppen 50 A, which is a huge warehouse which until just a few decades ago was used for handling cargoes in Germany’s largest port Hamburg. The place is authentic and invites us to go on a journey through time where we can see how goods were unloaded and stored in the depot, and find out about the work of the stevedores. Some of the people who used to work here, witnesses to a former industrial era, still share their knowledge with us nowadays. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @histmuseenhh | #52Museums #historischemuseenhh #museum #history #Germany #Hamburg ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📷 Sinje Hasheider
