Celebrating being 28-years-young on the top of a mountain with cheesecake and the love of my life. Doesn't get much better than that ❤🎂 #birthdaygirl #pnw #pnwonderland #heatherlake #makeawish

• No one knows I... • • There’s not much my family and friends don’t know about me, but I’m realizing more and more that my wonderful little community on here knows very little about me. One thing in my life that has shaped the person I’ve become today, was my schooling. I went to a very alternative K-8 school, that focused heavily on outdoor education and the arts. We didn’t have tests, or grades, instead we tracked our own progress through portfolios. Instead of reading from science books, we’d backpack into the Utah wilderness and do hands on study of the geology of the rocks, and the flora and fauna of the area. Instead of doing times tables, we built a chicken coop to learn the geometry of the the structure. By the age of 12 I knew how to build a snow cave, and start a fire from scratch. I knew about the environment around me, and how to respect and survive in it. For our 8th grade “graduation” we were left in the woods for 24 hours (within shouting distance of help) expected to make our own shelter and find our own food. We then were to write an essay on our experience. We got crap from a lot of the public school kids. We were the weird hippy nature kids, and probably were improperly educated cause we had “untraditional” schooling. But I gained a lot of maturity at a young age because of this experience, and still went on to have a very successful high school career at a traditional public school. What I learned in my childhood is more valuable to me than anything a grade, test, or textbook could have given. I learned how to express my emotions, respect our earth, and basically be a wilderness badass 😋 and for that I’ll forever be grateful!
