Northern #Mongolia near Russian border, 2018.
In the southern Gobi Desert in Mongolia, a sandstorm doesn't seem to affect the Bactrian camels at the sand dunes of Khongoryn Els. This time of the year the camels are shedding their heavy winter coats. We nicknamed this camel Elvis, check out the haircut. @natgeo @thephotosociety .

“What does your family think of your lifestyle?”. Here’s a question I’ve been asked a few times during my travels. I’ll keep my answer 🙌 real 🙌.
Because, picture this: your daughter, your granddaughter, a young woman at the prime of her life, relatively smart and sometimes funny, with a degree from one of the world’s best universities, with a high-paid job in a high-growth startup in high-living London. She tries to settle down and gets married (that’s a story for another time). It looks like soon, babies will be born, a flat bought and everything will be just perfect. Then, *seemingly* from one moment to the next, she’s quit everything and everyone and left it behind and now owns 3 pairs of socks, sleeps in a sleeping bag every night and spends most of her time without electricity or running water on the Mongolian steppe. Your daughter, your granddaughter.
So, what does my family think of my lifestyle?
Some of them think I’ve gone mad. Some of them ask me when I’ll come back every time I call. Some of them cannot wrap their heads around why I would choose to live like this. Every time, the question: “when are you coming back?”. Every time, I say “never”. Every time, a sigh from the other end of the line. I call less and less.
Most of these conversations leave me with a soul cocktail of anxiety, guilt and sadness for several days. It feels wrong, because I am so happy where I am - the question on my mind is “why can’t they understand and encourage that?” Sometimes, I want to cry. Sometimes, I want to scream.
But then I try to pause. You must always come back to what you know. Always gaze inwards and check in with your heart.
That’s when I know that I am living the life I’ve always wanted to live. Somehow, for the first time, I have infinite confidence that what I’m doing is right, and meaningful, and beautiful. When you mute all the background noise and ask your heart, that’s when you see it. Even if it’s you, and you alone, that can see it at first.
It’s not always straightforward, but the road is yours to own. Yes. It’s not always straightforward, but I own my road. 💪
