Flexibility is a crucial part of my training. Incorporating a good warm up and cool down into every session decreases my chances of injury. Hey there hi there ho there! 👋 ⠀ ⠀ I’d like to introduce myself to you lovely humans! This is me, Shelby 👩🏼‍🌾 ⠀⠀ I’m passionate about all things health and fitness! I graduated from UBC in 2015 with a BSc. Food Nutrition and Health. ⠀ ⠀ The conclusion of my 4 year degree was; to be healthy you have to move everyday, eat a variety of nutrient dense foods, and experience everything in life in moderation! ⠀ This was discouraging at first, but now I appreciate the simplicity of this advice because I know a healthy lifestyle is achievable for everyone! ⠀ ⠀ Since then, I’ve worked in the health and fitness industry in a variety of roles. Currently I’m a Personal Trainer at @vipfitnessandlifestyle where I help clients gain confidence in mind, body and spirit through healthy lifestyle habits. ⠀ It’s an absolute privilege to do what I do. @vipfitnessandlifestyle is my favourite place to be! It’s a joy to work with the most elite trainers in Vancouver and at such a beautiful studio! ⠀ My purpose is to inspire others to take care of their health so they can live happy, healthy lives. It won’t happen overnight! 7 years ago I’d never been in a gym, never lifted a weight, never made my health or myself a priority. But over time, one day, one workout, one meal at a time, I’ve gained confidence and an enthusiasm for life I didn’t know was possible. Quick, gnarly leg pump 💥 . . Here’s some of yesterday’s accessory work: ▪️Superset Deficit DB squats and KB ”sled” push ▪️Reverse lunges (long to short stance) ▪️KB swings . . If you’re anything like me and would rarely be caught doing cardio, the sled push and KB swings are good HR raising sets to get a little sweat in 💦 Give these a try for a leg day finisher 💪🏽

Hanging like a bat🦇 . . . Taking a break from powerlifting for a while. Moving heavy weight and training for strength is definitely taxing on the body, but the amount of mental and emotional energy it needs is just as demanding, if not more. It’s been a rough couple of weeks emotionally and my energy levels have been anything but optimal. I really just don’t have it in me to be moving as much weight as I normally do. I’m taking this as an opportunity to work on stuff I don’t usually do, to better technique, build some muscle, learn new things, and who knows, maybe even get my cardio endurance back 🤷🏽‍♀️ Facing these tough times with as much good attitude and positivity as possible, and thankful for the people who have had my back and kept me smiling. . . If anyone reading this is also having a rough time just know that you’re not alone, that life has ups and downs, that what you are going through is meant to build you stronger, and that (like everything else in life) it is temporary. . . Embrace change, be flexible, and trust life’s path. It will take you where you’re meant to be. ♥️

BACK DAY. Unleash the Cobra!!! Haha. But yo. Train your back. Please. Train it lots and learn how to engage it. Life changing. Posture, aesthetics, and functional health. A strong healthy back is key. The big thing when training the back is learning how to move your scapula. Retract and Depression. Name of the Game. To hit the lats keep your shoulders almost a little protracted elbows in tight. To really get detail in mid and upper back you really want to retract and get a good squeeze elbows more flared out. Hands are like hooks. I’m sure you have heard that before. Pull with the elbow not the hands. These are some staple back exercises I do. PullDowns, pullovers, High and low rows. I like high reps. I’m a high rep guy personally but end of the day. Train back. Train it hard. Train it lots. Fly fly away. ▪️ ▪️ ▪️ Grow your wings. HAMSTRINGS ON🔥 . . If you think you have strong hamstrings and have never tried this, think again! . . I have a really hard time activating and feeling my hamstrings during my lifts and even during hamstring specific exercises like good mornings and RDLs but this bad boy never fails. THEY BUUURN! 🔥🔥 Here’s a few tips: ▪️Keep your core engaged and don’t let your ribs flare. ▪️Keep your toes down rather than having your feet dorsiflexed so you’re not firing up your tibialis anterior (you’ll feel your shins rather than your hamstrings if you do) ▪️If curling back the sliders is too hard focus on the eccentric. Lower yourself down slowly keeping your glutes engaged and a strong bridge. Once you’re all the way down just reset and repeat. . . This exercise is now a leg day staple for me. Save and try it out on your next leg day! ♥️ Thanks @amontyfitness for introducing me to these!

EXERCISE OF THE DAY. TRICEP EXTENSION Take your tasty Croissants 🥐 to a new level with this must Tricep exercise. The Tricep extension is a key movement to effectively engage the Tricep. You can use many different attachments but most are executed with similar movement with slight tweaks pending on the attachment. I personally love the rope. I get can a good contraction of both the small and long head of the Tricep. Makes for a great pump. High reps!! Big fan of hitting arms, always high reps. Easier on the elbows. Like 20 plus. 50 rep sets on these guys. Appropriate weight. Elbows always tucked in close. Never flare. NEVER move elbow joint. Arms act as a hinge. No sway. Elbows are tucked and sturdy, And make sure you get a full range of motion. Bicep to forearm on the way up and full contraction on the way down. Engage your glutes and core. Be stable. Breath.
