Day 30/30 I took the challenge:30 days of walking 30 minutes/day. Finished today as I started—a solo-trekker—but in between I joined walks, initiated walks, and like everyone else walked in good and bad weather, rain or shine, heat and cold to complete this challenge. I recruited walkers and shared the Girktrek mission and vision. This isn’t the end, it’s just the beginning of a new regimen. Walking is necessary. Walking is NOT sufficient. Thank you Girltrek, thank you to fellow trekkers, thank you to the new trekkers, thank you to my family and friends for continued support. This month I walked 167.13 miles or 421,940 steps. I exceeded my goal averaging 14,064 steps/day or 5.57 miles/day. But more work to be done. My path toward health is not complete and we have a million sisters to bring along. #walk #walking #girltrek #WeAreHarriet #Ubuntu #Day30ActsofService #GivingThanks #AttitudeofGratitude #radicalselfcare #harriettubman #healthiswealth #selfcare #blackmentalhealth #ancestry #selfcareisarevolutionaryact #Iamworthit #harrietshandbook #blackgirlmagic #blackgirljoy #1Milby2020 #100mlives #healthequitynow #myownpath #mybestlife #MoCo #MontgomeryCountyMD #strivingforexcellencenotperfection #optoutside #OutdoorAfro

Day 27/30. Taking it all in while I can. Good weather. Health is wealth, and the ability to help another is a simple thing. Enjoying another part of Sligo Creek Trail and the beauty of the county. Appreciating the magnificence here in nature. This. Is. Enough. #walk #walking #girltrek #WeAreHarriet #Ubuntu #Day27DaysofService #radicalselfcare #harriettubman #healthiswealth #selfcare #blackmentalhealth #selfcareisarevolutionaryact #Iamworthit #harrietshandbook #blackgirlmagic #blackgirljoy #1Milby2020 #100mlives #healthequitynow #myownpath #mybestlife #MoCo #SligoCreekTrail #MontgomeryCountyMD #strivingforexcellencenotperfection #optoutside #OutdoorAfro

Day 25/30 and I am reminded that we are coming up on the holidays which can be a challenging time for some. Issues of depression, anxiety and substance abuse can rear its head. This morning as I walked from my home to the local Starbucks, I took note of the many road signs I passed and see them as a metaphor for some of the provocations that come with this time of year: Bump—yes, there are many bumps that make it a challenge as we navigate through family, family issues, food, expenses, etc. Like wearing blinders we do not always appreciate how the holidays impact our lives or the lives of others. Reduce Speed—we are cautious and may slow down and for a moment, some may even...STOP. Maybe we want to park ourselves in places or spaces that are not healthy, not safe. It is easy to get stuck in a cycle, and repeat those cycles. It’s not always clear what is right, which direction to take—especially in the midst of perceived crisis. It is during these times that folks may appear suspicious—engaging in behaviors we do not understand, or those we know all too well because we have been there or recognize, ‘by the grace of GOD, there go I.’ And maybe, its during these times that folks need not only our grace but our assistance. Be the answer. Take a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course to learn the tools to identify those in need and the strategies to help until they can get to definitive care. If you live in the DMV, there is a place for free MHFA training through the Primary Care Coalition, Inc. : https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdK6-f_aRsRlFHvtQil91Oo2PzjwuVKiSwNe6YKmV9mbKNUdQ/viewform All they need is at least 20 per class to run the session. Ok @Girltrek, go get you some. This will be the best day well spent. #walk #walking #girltrek #WeAreHarriet #Ubuntu #Day25ActsofService #radicalselfcare #harriettubman #healthiswealth #selfcare #blackmentalhealth #mysisterskeeper #MHFA #endstigma #selfcareisarevolutionaryact #Iamworthit #harrietshandbook #blackgirlmagic #blackgirljoy #1Milby2020 #100mlives #healthequitynow #MoCo #strivingforexcellencenotperfection #optoutside #OutdoorAfro

(1) I started my walk in my neighborhood thinking I would walk into the park while admiring the sites that often go unseen when I’m whizzing by in a car. Yet, I didn’t meet my goal today. Straight up. I said I was going to walk 5 miles everyday, but today I just didn’t do it. When I realized I wasn’t, I was starting to berate myself for failing to fulfill the commitment, thinking of all the negativity that would come my way, imagining all sorts of pushback (2) when the phone rings, a dear friend calls, and we decide to take a walk together. (3)My friend wants to show me places in my neighborhood I may not know. It was true. I did not know of this specific myth-like and magical place. (4-9)The colors are still popping, and sculpture long since neglected peaked out and spoke to me. It’s day 23/30 in the Girltrek challenge. So what if I didn’t reach my goal (10); I live to fight another day, and time shared with an old friend was well spent. #walk #walking #girltrek #WeAreHarriet #Ubuntu #Day23ActsofService #radicalselfcare #harriettubman #healthiswealth #selfcare #blackmentalhealth #selfcareisarevolutionaryact #Iamworthit #harrietshandbook #blackgirlmagic #blackgirljoy #1Milby2020 #100mlives #healthequitynow #MoCo #strivingforexcellencenotperfection #optoutside #OutdoorAfro

I used to wear this button almost every day in one of my previous jobs—mostly with old nurses whom I perceived to be unwilling or unable to make timely change on community needs and evidence base. Day 21/30. I walk and I say ‘NO’ to things that no longer serve me. Most times today, and in life, I didn’t just say No, I said: I’m going for a walk Not now I am sorry, but I can’t Uh un Thank you, but no thanks Not today, but I appreciate it I’ll pass Heck no No thank you No I used some of these today. I gave up on or said NO to that which served no purpose. I don’t think anybody got mad; I know nobody suffered. I am OK. #walk #walking #girltrek #WeAreHarriet #Ubuntu #Day21ActsofService #radicalselfcare #harriettubman #healthiswealth #selfcare #blackmentalhealth #selfcareisarevolutionaryact #Iamworthit #harrietshandbook #blackgirlmagic #blackgirljoy #1Milby2020 #100mlives #healthequitynow #strivingforexcellencenotperfection #optoutside #OutdoorAfro

I sent a thank you text to two Black Trans* women who are fighting for human rights and equality. The times are challenging but they remain undaunted. They are Harriet. I walked and delivered a hand written note to a community member—a community health nurse. This person is always doing what is asked of her—for her family, her colleagues, her faith, her community. She stretches it thin. She is Harriet. I continued the walk to save my life. Day 20/30. I can’t see the finish line because the work will continue after day 30. However, I know I can make the next lap even in the midst of cold and chaos. I am Harriet. #walk #walking #girltrek #WeAreHarriet #Ubuntu #Day20ActsofService #radicalselfcare #harriettubman #healthiswealth #selfcare #blackmentalhealth #selfcareisarevolutionaryact #Iamworthit #harrietshandbook #blackgirlmagic #blackgirljoy #1Milby2020 #100mlives #healthequitynow #myownpath #mybestlife #MoCo #TDOR #Transrightsarehumanrights #BlackTransLivesMatter #strivingforexcellencenotperfection #optoutside #OutdoorAfro

Day 19/30 walk and register for ..... a life saving class. As a healthcare professional and one who works in the space of emergency management/emergency response training, three trainings I’d like you to consider: Stop The Bleed teaches recognition of life threatening bleeding and the life saving skills to stop bleeding until the person can get to care. https://www.stopthebleed.org Until Help Arrives also teaches life saving skills and strategies until first responders arrive. https://community.fema.gov/until-help-arrives Mental Health First Aid teaches about recognition of mental health and substance abuse issues and strategies to help until you can get the person to care. https://www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org If you are having difficulty with locating a training site for any these courses, contact your local Office of Emergency Management or fire/ems service. Many are responsible for teaching these skills to community members. Why these? We have seen all too well the impact of gun violence and mass casualty events. These trainings provide skills that would help in those situations and circumstances for sure; however, it doesn’t have to be that catastrophic. Consider the circumstance of injuries from a major car accident, or your child or grandchild’s terrible fall on the playground resulting in a compound fracture. These might be circumstances where skills from Stop the Bleed or Until Help Arrives can be put to practical use. #walk #walking #girltrek #WeAreHarriet #Ubuntu #Day19DaysofService #radicalselfcare #harriettubman #healthiswealth #selfcare #blackmentalhealth #selfcareisarevolutionaryact #Iamworthit #harrietshandbook #blackgirlmagic #blackgirljoy #1Milby2020 #100mlives #healthequitynow #myownpath #mybestlife #MoCo #BrooksideGardens #strivingforexcellencenotperfection #optoutside #OutdoorAfro

‘Delight in the little things,’ the card read, and at the end of this day that is exactly what I am doing. I am above ground, I can walk under my own power, I can enjoy youth basketball, and fight another day. Day 16/30, more than halfway there. I misread the directive for the day. I thought I was supposed to walk fast as in faster (I realize now, the idea was to fast, as in to give up on food or drink). So, I left my house a little late walking to my grandchild’s basketball game. Thought the crunch in time would surely accelerate my pace. It did. Made it there in about 45 minutes. Quick, but not too quick to appreciate what there was to see. In route I saw scenery I had never passed. Beauty I thought had already faded in the face of colder weather. A small thing, a little thing, a delight. And the basketball game, they won. But it wasn’t that they won that made me happy, it was to see growth in my grandchild and his teammates—to see his early demonstration of lifelong superpowers: hardwork, compassion, selflessness, sense of fairplay to name a few. Day 16, more than halfway there. The delight is in the journey, and tomorrow is day 2 of the basketball playoffs. #walk #walking #girltrek #WeAreHarriet #Ubuntu #Day15ActsofService #radicalselfcare #harriettubman #healthiswealth #selfcare #blackmentalhealth #selfcareisarevolutionaryact #Iamworthit #harrietshandbook #blackgirlmagic #blackgirljoy #1Milby2020 #100mlives #healthequitynow #myownpath #mybestlife #strivingforexcellencenotperfection #optoutside #OutdoorAfro

It’s cold outside. Probably the coldest this year. I’m trying to acclimate but it’s hard. I’d much rather be at the beach. I’m a warm weather person for sure, but still, I have goals. My walking goals are 5 miles or 13k steps/day—whichever comes first. I’m not quite ready to take it inside but.....it was freakin’ cold today. Pulled out my heavy hitters—all purpose, insulated, waterproof boots. Got these in Arkansas in a January snow/sleet storm while observing at a law enforcement training site. Kept my feet warm, dry and cushioned for those lengthy 12 hour + days. Now I wear them for the same reason though not under the same circumstances. Walking is probably the easiest thing we all can do to improve our health but you need to make sure you got appropriate shoes. #walk #walking #girltrek #WeAreHarriet #Ubuntu #Day13ActsofService #radicalselfcare #harriettubman #healthiswealth #selfcare #blackmentalhealth #selfcareisarevolutionaryact #Iamworthit #harrietshandbook #blackgirlmagic #blackgirljoy #1Milby2020 #100mlives #healthequitynow #myownpath #mybestlife #strivingforexcellencenotperfection #optoutside #outdoorafro #takeahike

My family and some friends provide a meal every month for seniors at a local community center. These monthly get togethers have been a lifeline to the community—bridging the past with the present. Each time I am amazed by who is not there and what new person comes. So many have passed onto ancestry; new folks hear about these luncheons and seize on the opportunity for fellowship, fun and a little food. I am proud of my cousins for putting this together. Their mother, my aunt, long since passed. A widow when her youngest was less than two, my father’s sister raised all eleven of her children to be proud, productive and loving of the community in which they were raised. My aunt would not be surprised to know that her legacy of love for family and a good meal continues through her progeny. We are in day 12 of the Girltrek.org thirty days of acts of service. While the act of those who put on the meal today is, in and of itself, deserving of applause (not me, all I did was wash the dishes!), it is the fundamental principles behind my cousins, friends and aunts that must be highlighted. Like Fannie Lou Hamer, todays gift was not the meal but the virtues that underlie the hands that prepared it: hard-work, resilience, activism, community, compassion, humanity, philanthropy, leadership and courage. Like Fannie Lou Hamer, they are ubuntu. #walk #walking #girltrek #WeAreHarriet #Ubuntu #Day12ActsofService #radicalselfcare #harriettubman #healthiswealth #selfcare #blackmentalhealth #FanniesArmy #FannieLouHamer #selfcareisarevolutionaryact #Iamworthit #harrietshandbook #blackgirlmagic #blackgirljoy #1Milby2020 #100mlives #healthequitynow #myownpath #mybestlife #strivingforexcellencenotperfection #MontgomeryCountyMD #MoCo #MoCoRec

Filled with gratitude on this day: Thank you to our veterans who have served this nation to uphold our freedoms and the Constitution. Thank you to our current service people who represent us here and abroad. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾. Thank you to the Girltrekkers who came out to participate in such a beautiful walk in Prince George’s County on the Paint Branch Trail. As one sister expressed, we are so lucky to be living where there are so many beautiful trails!Thank you to Norma for her organizational efforts, and her longtime Sisterfriend who gave each of us beautiful purple flowers to remind us all that there is much more to be done in the fight against Alzheimer’s and other memory disorders. Beautiful day; beautiful women; beautiful thoughts. I walked in my community and while doing so, I left no trace of human presence. I beautified the environment by picking up trash. Big shout out to those in the community who regularly have this job.
