1690-1700 "Lord Clapham's coat, waistcoat and close-fitting breeches demonstrate the newly fashionable three-piece suit. At this period the suit was not expected to match. The neck-cloth is worn in fashionable, military style." This doll is part of a set, Lady Clapham can be seen in a picture here and in a previous post. "Lord Clapham offers a fine example of both formal and informal dress for a gentleman in the 1690s. His formal outfit includes a coat, waistcoat and breeches, while his informal dress is represented by the nightgown. Accessories such as the stockings, stock (a form of stiff, close-fitting neckcloth) and gloves are very valuable since very few items from this early period survive in museum collections" Victoria and Albert Museum number T.847-1974 . . . . . #historicalgarments #17thcentury #bespoketailoring #costumedesign #1600s #historicalfashion #dresshistory #waistcoat #historicalsewing #fashionhistory #historiadelamoda #histoiredelart #menssuits

Tomas Ayala Transitional Rapier Court Sword Spanish *Very Rare* 17th Century Price: $5,000 Details: -Tomas Ayala was a highly reputed Toledo swordsmith from the around 1590-1630. At around 1630 he stops working, and is succeeded by his son, Luis Ayala. It is very rare to find a sword this well in tact without modern restoration. The blade features a likely contemporary wire-bound grip, 2 grooved quillons, a pommel featuring a knights helmet, likely representative of the Empire. The rapier was a popular sidearm for civilians throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. When the second half of the 17th century opened its doors, the transitional rapier took form. -Material: Iron and Steel -Dimensions 102 cm, 40" inches long -Provenance: Private Collection in Lithuania References: -Proceedings of the Numismatic and Antiquarian Society of Philadelphia By Numismatic and Antiquarian Society of Philadelphia -Wallace Collection Ships from Nashville, TN #renaissance #17thcentury #swords #sword #antiquesword #oldsword #weapons #weaponcollector #tomasayala

Venturing into the solemn and beautifully twisted music of John Wilson! #na_dalonyah #na_dalonyah_detali #nadalonyah #boots #leather #leathercraft #17thcentury #leatherboots #leathergoods #leathercraft #handcrafted #handcraft #handmade #beauty #pearl #embossing

Tuscany is a magnet for people who wants to produce great wines. So it happened also to Antonio Moretti, who took over the winery Tenuta Sette Ponti near Arezzo in the beginning of the 90s. The vineyards have a great history because some of them were planted from Leopold von Habsburg in the 17th century. After just a few years his wines became famous, and one became cult - the "Oreno". Here is the youngest vintage: 🍇 2018 Oreno Toscana IGT Tenuta Sette Ponti 🍇 The name of the winery comes from 7 bridges between Arezzo and Firenze you have to cross when you want to visit the winery. The 2018 is a Bordeaux blend of 50% Merlot, 40%Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot. 🍇 It is a damned great wine! It has a very deep ruby colour changing into the purple with a impenetrable dark core and violet reflexes on the edge. The nose is first a little bit closed and offers flavours of oriental spices like cardamon and white pepper, which are in a 2nd wave replaced by dark chocolate, ripe plums, dark cherries, cassis and fresh marzipan. There are also refreshing hints of graphite. The aromatic texture developpes a very good complexity. 🍇 It is fullbodied with a nice, juicy and "sexy" mouthfeeling and an exzellent integrated high alcohol. It has a very good balance. The tannins are fine-grained and velvety. Here are added flavours of cherry drops and nougat. It has a very long, impressive finish, and it signals a great potential. Enjoy this wine over the next 20 - 25 years. 🍇 It is a great wine. Marshmallowwines rating:96-98pts. 🍇 I wish you all happy holidays, but please be careful and stay healthy! Cheers! . . . #tenutasetteponti #tuscany #tuscanywine #oreno #merlot #cabernetsauvignon #petitverdot #arezzo #firence #bordeauxblend #greatwine #2018 #winetasting #finewine #wineregion #cultwine #winerating #weinakademiker #italianwine #winefromitaly #winejudging #rarewine #17thcentury #winetime #wineoclock #winegeek #wineporn #redwine #redwinelover @tenutasetteponti

In the state of current events, we could not help but look up a certain word in this 1762 medical dictionary by Bartolomeo Castelli, a theologian and physician who worked in Messina, Italy during the 17th century. The entry for "corona" does not describe a destructive virus, but a more majestic meaning, which has roots in our modern word for coronation: • • The corona can be understood in two ways. The first, as if the head were wreathed in flowers or surrounded in flowers. In the metaphorical sense, corona means the likeness of the coloration in the cornea of the eye. Or so says, Galen, Hippocrates, etc. • • During these uncertain times, we hope you all are staying safe and healthy. • • #redemptorist #archives #fromthearchives #rarebooks #medicaldictionary #castelli #bartolomeo #17thcentury #corona #redemptorists

1690-1700 examples of formal and informal wear dress of a wealthy woman. "Her formal outfit includes a mantua (gown) and petticoat, while her informal dress is represented by the nightgown (a dressing gown rather than a garment worn to bed) and petticoat. Accessories such as the stockings, cap and chemise (a body garment) are very valuable since very few items from such an early period survive in museum collections. Equally important is the demonstration of how these clothes were worn together." The doll is known as Lady Clapham and is a Cockerell family heirloom. "The high quality of Lady Clapham and her clothes indicates that she would have been expensive. There is little evidence of use, which suggests that she was admired by adults rather than played with by children." When my husband pulled this from the river it was completely black. After washing it, this brilliant cobalt blue shone through! I couldn’t believe such a vibrant colour was totally hidden by the mud. I believe this could be 17th century German Westerwald pottery. A Still Life Frans Snyders, “Still life with small game birds and a fruit basket”, c.1615-17, #RGCollection. This painting is an example of a ‘seignorial’ still life, celebrating the produce of a lordly estate. The tiny birds were delicacies and were sometimes served at banquets as part of a rôti sans pareil, where a large bird was stuffed with a smaller, and that with a smaller, and so on, like Russian nesting dolls. Snyders’s fruit, vegetables and birds were, however, not an indication of extravagance but of the kind of well-ordered, Humanist world that appealed to the artist and his patrons: the nobleman in rural retreat, lord of all he surveys, living the ideal ‘villa’ life extolled by the Roman poet Horace. Lavish still lifes were one of the glories of the #AntwerpSchool in the first half of the seventeenth century, and Frans Snyders a leading exponent of the genre. I am sorry because my photos do not honor it... but this is probably one of the most beautiful rapiers that have come down to us. It is the work of the goldsmith and enameller close to papal power, Gaspard Mola who was particularly attached to it and said it was "worthy of any king or emperor". At his death in 1640, the goldsmith bequeathed the sword to the San Carlo Hospital with a ban on selling it at a bad price. at the time it was not complete, there was only the hilt which was bought in 1835 by a French collector who had it mounted on blades and had the scabbard made. This explains its presence today in the collections of the @museearmee_invalides. It is extraordinary with its colorful enamel decoration which stands out against a background of silver. It was made around 1620 in Rome. #rome #paris #france #italy #heritage #heritage_italy #sword #rapier #swordporn #17thcentury #fencing #historicalfencing #enamel #silver #metal #metalwork #art #arthistory #militaria #museum #medieval #picoftheday #photooftheday #pictureoftheday #instadaily #instagramhub #warrior #goldsmith #jewelry #masterpiece

#museudosbiscainhos #museum #museu #arte #neoclassico #pintura #17thcentury #18thcentury #sociedade #history #architecture #decorativearts #decorativeartmuseum

Throwback: In 1993 - 27 years ago ! – the exhibition ‘Een eeuw van schittering. Diamantjuwelen uit de 17de eeuw = A sparkling age. 17th-century diamond jewellery’ took place in the (previous) Provincial Diamond Museum in Antwerp. You are looking at pages 106-107 of the 1993 catalogue of the exhibition, which shows a rather unclear black and white image (from those days of 💾 ) of the case of a ring💍 … . This beautiful and rare 17th century diamond cluster ring is now finding its way to Antwerp once more! The King Baudouin Foundation - 🙏 #belgianheritage - has purchased this rare piece of jewellery with diamonds and a miniature portrait for DIVA’s museum presentation. . For now, here are two catalogues (1993 and 2020) that describe and depict this extraordinary piece: 1. 'Een eeuw van schittering. Diamantjuwelen uit de 17de eeuw = A sparkling age. 17th-century diamond jewellery, Antwerpen, Provinciaal Diamantmuseum, 1993. . 2. Beatriz Chadour-Sampson & Sandra Hindman: ‘"Living nobly". Since antiquity, navigators have used dividers such as these to measure distances. These dividers were excavated from the London shipwreck by some dedicated local divers. They are used similarly to how we would pinch our fingers along a mileage scale and transfer the distance onto a map. Navigators used dividers to measure distances on astronomical charts and maps. These dividers have a hinge in the middle enabling the legs to move in and out, facilitating change in distance. We still find ourselves surprised at having entered a world where small excursions, like last year's trip to the magical Menkemaborg in Groningen, are suddenly no longer possible, painfully illustrating that one only really appreciates what one's got when it's gone. Shown here is the majestic fireplace in the main Zaal, or Salon, of the house, designed by Allert Meijer and carved by the talented Jan de Rijk around 1705, and incorporating an oval picture by Herman Collenius. Just zoom in and marvel at those busty Caryatids, as we have all been reduced to armchair travellers... If ever an image radiated the delicious concept of Horror vacui, this is it, surely. • #1680s #17thcentury #armemuseum #justaucorps #uniform

You´ll get to see this exceptional cluster ring later this year in the museum presentation in  #DIVAantwerp. It concerns a very rare ring from the 17th century with an engraved portrait of a young man accompanied by an enamel figurine in the case of the ring. The interpretation of the enameled figurine is unclear but presumably refers to a secret love garden. .
