Redlining was a process in which the Home Owners' Loan Corporation (HOLC), a federal agency, gave neighborhoods ratings to guide investment. This policy is so named for the red or “hazardous” neighborhoods that were deemed riskiest. These neighborhoods were predominantly home to communities of color, and this is no accident; the “hazardous” rating was in large part based on racial demographics. In other words, redlining was an explicitly discriminatory policy. Redlining made it hard for residents to get loans for homeownership or maintenance, and led to cycles of disinvestment. Today 87% of the neighborhoods they confined us to by redlining are undergoing gentrification. Simply put, Gentrification is when people with money start fixing up poor neighborhoods, that’s gentrification. Sounds great, except it usually means the poor residents can’t afford to live there anymore and have to move. So when you see me preaching real estate and home ownership, it’s not because I’m tryina “stunt” on anybody. It’s because I know the history of how they been finessing us for generations and my sole objective to decrease the wealth gap thru financial literary and education. Each one teach one. We can only change the narrative as a collective, no one man can do it.

This is so needed 🇵🇷 according to @portoreecanstudies these books are rare and written circa 2007. I remember going to stores all around the island and finding lots of books about the Taíno or Españoles or maybe even specific people like sports stars and hero Roberto Clemente or musicians/singers like Ruth Fernandez or Choco Orta but no #AfroPuertoRican history beyond enslavement and even very little about that. Much more is needed and I would love to find these books too. #AfricanDiaspora #AfroBoricua #historianegra #BlackHistory #afrodescendiente #latinegras gracias❤️ @l_eblablabla #Repost @latinegraslove • • • • •

#TBT | #BlackDiasporaTravel: National Museum of African American History and Culture This museum is beautifully designed, curated, and operated. Israel (@raebanz09 ) and I learned so much about the forced migration of our ancestors from Central and West Africa to the Caribbean, United States, and Latin America. The #BlackDiaspora has created almost every genre/dance form from #praisedance, #swing, #steppin, #zydeco #dowop, #bachata, #samba, #salsa, #merengue, #hiphop, #kompa, #reggae, #cumbia, #tango, and more. We are probably creating new genres, dances, and inventions as I type this. At the beginning and end of the day we legit should be proud/ honored to be Black cause we got the all the sauce. Who has visited the museum?

Fashioning black identity: Africa and the African diaspora explores ways in which contemporary black African artists are using fashion, photography and portraiture to redefine personal and cultural identity. The exhibition brings together works by seven prominent artists from Africa and the African diaspora who use photography and different spatial, corporal and temporal reference points as devices to explore and unpack perceptions of race and being. Photography as a commercial business began in Africa with British and European colonisation in the late 19th century. Studios were set up to capture images of ‘exotic’ Africa to sell to the outside world. However, with the move to independence between the 1950s and 1970s, many of the photographic studios were taken over by African apprentices who began to explore the possibilities of photography as an art form. Over the past forty years, a distinctive style of art photography has emerged in Africa, with artists incorporating fashion as a complex device in their works to convey individual and collective identity, speak of resistance and remembering, underscore creative expression and raise issues of race consciousness. Shifting between time past, present and future, portraits by these artists capture people, experiences and situations in order to redefine images of self and race in contemporary Africa and the African diaspora. Happy Holidays from Kwanzaa Marketplace Vendor Regine Bellinger of @conkretejungleproductionsinc! We asked this multi-talented artist what the holidays mean to her and she said "It means time with the family AND almost time for Carnival!" This amazing dancer & artisan will be selling hand-crafted skirts like the one you see in the photo. Hope you can stop by her table to pick a few up for your loved ones and let her know what the holidays mean to you!
