Calling in the cavalry to solve your pig problems? If your hogs were facing hog cholera in the 19th century, you might be losing millions of dollars per year to the disease. Before the viral nature of hog cholera was understood, purported cure-alls like Sheridan's Cavalry Condition Powder promised to treat everything that might ail an animal. "To be used freely," it proclaimed, for everything from "loss of appetite" to "roughness of hair" to "bots and heaves." As colorful as it was, it didn't do the trick. 🐷🐖🐽🥓 The first effective serum treatment was developed in 1906 (this bottle of Scweine-Pest-Serum in our second photo is from around 1910), helping to save the pork industry worldwide. Our third photo: a 1954 serum from Lederle Laboratories. 🐷 Find out more about how scientists made sure we could keep bringing home the bacon on our blog: s.si.edu/healthyhogs (Click the link in our profile.) 💉💊🔬🌡 We're going hog wild with medical history this #AntibodiesWeek. Selfie beside CP Caboose in Castor, Ab. Stock car for shipping all kinds of livestock. Auctions were located near the rails so purchasers could load their stock into the rail cars & have them shipped close to their communities. This was before the cattle liners were available. Efficient mode of transporting provided rail cars were made available by the railroad companies. As cars were not made readily available to ship grain & agriculture products to market, farmera were forced to haul by trucks & trailers. #mybadlands #cbtambassador #cbtourism #travelalberta #farmhistory #countrymarketing #castoralberta #historybuff #cprail #agriculturehistory at Town of Castor

An Orange and Durham County, NC farm where rust, splintered wood, neglected and abandoned tools, stacked tobacco sticks tell tales of farm days past. Tobacco barns with rusted hinges, tar paper blowing in the breeze, spider webs and faded voices of workers at the end of a long day in the tobacco fields. Gone are these days now to alternative crops like pick your own strawberries, fresh honey from the bee hives, fresh baked short bread cakes and glorious bouquets of cut flowers. History of agriculture changing and evolving from one generation to the next. #artandagriculture #strawberry #strawberryshortcake #bees #honey #tobacco #agriculturehistory #farm #agriculture #nc #ncartist #durhamnc #chapelhill

I have this thing with farm fields. 140 years ago today the first agricultural research station in the South (and only the second in the nation) opened in North Carolina. The program has grown and now the Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services in conjunction with N.C. State University operate 18 research stations across N.C. I had the pleasure of visiting the Mountain Research Station not too long ago to learn about their pollinator program and what they’re doing to combat the hemlock woolly adelgid, in order to protect our Eastern Hemlock trees, “the redwoods of the East," that grace the Great Smoky Mountains. Boy those views in Haywood County are mighty nice 🌲 #NC #NorthCarolina #ncagriculture #nchistory #agriculturehistory #pollinators #ihavethisthingwithsunflowers #hemlock #ncplaces #ontheNCroad #HaywoodCounty #NCWriter #OldNorthState

Happy Wednesday Foodie Historians! Today's 5Days of Food History fact comes with a healthy twist. In honour of our amazing vendor, @gesundheitbakery who are with us at the Cannery Farmers' Market every Sunday, we're taking a look at the history of Rye bread, and it's anything but dry! For centuries, rye was considered the grain of the poor. It produced that bitey taste that we know and love, grew well in colder temperatures and could keep for months before it went moldy. White bread was a food of the rich, as refined wheat flour came with a high pricetag and spoiled much quicker. As Europe's economy began to grow richer 1600's from colonization, and revolutions brought people a new sense of their equality, folks of all walks of life began to demand access to white bread. This trend continued through most of eastern Europe and into North America by the 1900s, though throughout Scandinavia and Russia rye bread is still preferred to this day. However, fancy doesn't equal fit. Traditional rye breads, like the varieties from @gesundheitbakery are made with a sourdough starter, rather than yeast. The acid from the starter mixed with whole grain rye gives these breads a low glycemic index. Breads like this, unlike high glycemic white bread, doesn't spike blood sugar and insulin. So instead of a sugar-bomb slice of toast, take a peasants advice and grab a loaf of delicious rye from Gesundheit this Sunday Feb 26th between 10a-3p at the Cannery Farmers' Market. Your heart will thank you! @gogcannery #steveston #farmersmarket #richmondfarmersmarket #richmondbc #richmondbctourism #tourismvancouver #yvrevents #stevestonvillage #foodhistory #foodfacts #foodfun #yvrfoodies #history #bakery #germanbakery #ryebread #agriculturehistory #ryeisbetter #wholegrain #healthyfood #healthyheart #healthylife at Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site

Weekend plans: Visit our exhibition about bird poop before it closes on January 29. Yes, bird poop. The exhibition tells the story of John Norie's unique Marine Atlas, a book of sea charts dating to the early 19th century. His atlas is a beautiful example of the chart-maker's art, from a time when paper charts were the best GPS available. It also introduces us to the guano trade, the mining and trade of valuable Peruvian seabird droppings. The poop was used as fertilizer to enrich the soil in farmers' fields. The search for guano sent us far from home on dangerous and, frankly, stinky journeys. Can't visit in person? Click the link in our profile (http://s.si.edu/NorieAtlas) to explore our online exhibition. #APUSH #AmericanHistory #MaritimeHistory #AgHistory #AgricultureHistory #Maps #Atlas #geography at National Museum of American History

It's all fun and games at the #SmithsonianFood History Festival! Our curators have brought out some rarely seen collections objects to explore, including this game, Profit Farming. Produced in 1979, the game was designed to show players "what farming is all about." Did you ever play it? How did you learn about agriculture as a kid? If you're in the museum, don't miss more objects on the third floor on view until 3:30 p.m. #foodhistory #agriculturehistory

A very important practice in securing patents is that an idea must be novel and the patent must be applied for within a year of a public disclosure — meaning it must be treated as confidential. Once an outside person sees it, the one-year countdown begins. Read the implications of this practice in part four of our John Deere v. Kinze series. #history #agriculture #aglife #aghistory #agriculturehistory
