When you stare into the majesty of nature at the vast mountains, valleys, oceans, forests, etc, you realize how small you are in comparison. This gives you some perspective to realize that the things you’ve turned into mountains in your own life aren’t as towering as you think. Here are some common behaviors we all activate when we’re anxious. If I take a close look at this list, it in no way reflects who I want to be as a person. I want to be someone who is capable and lets others be capable. Someone who is able to share my thinking without taking responsibility for how others react to it. But how do I be that person? Well, I have to be willing to NOT DO what I would normally do to manage anxiety. I have to have alternative, more effective ways of calming down, that don’t involve trying to control others or asking others to function for me. Today, after a few sun salutations I decided I would walk to the temple to meditate with the monks. Thanks to jet lag, my new internal alarm clock wakes me around 4 am 🤦🏻‍♀️. ⠀ ⠀ But as we all know, life is never so straight forward and simple (and especially not in Sri Lanka). ⠀ ⠀ When I heard the chanting begin, I walked to the closest temple only to find it empty and the gates were closed. Almost immediately a tuk tuk driver drove past and asked why I was standing outside the temple at 5 am. (Good question). I explained that I wanted to sit with the monks chanting. Of course (in true Sri Lankan tuk tuk fashion) he told me to hop in to his tuktuk. ⠀ ⠀ Then he drove me straight to a little canteen. He thought I asked for a canteen (sounds kinda like chanting 🤷🏻‍♀️). From the little tea shop I could hear the chanting, but I still wanted to find the monks and sit with them. ⠀ ⠀ So I asked the tuk tuk driver to take me to the temple. Three minutes later we pulled into the Agrabodhi temple in Weligama only to find it empty too. I did find a massive speaker blaring the loudest of chants, but still no monks for me to meditate with. *sigh*⠀ ⠀ Seeing my sadness, the tuktuk driver walked me to the head monk’s little room back behind the temple. The monk came out and with a massive smile (almost as big as the speaker), he told me that puja (prayer) would begin at 6:30 (it was now only 5:30am). ⠀ ⠀ He explained that the early morning chanting is actually a recording of a blessing. He said people like to listen to it, so they blare it from the temple top (quite literally).⠀ ⠀ ✨ the moral of this story is this ... You can run around looking for the perfect place and time to meditate, but it works better if you just stop, sit and breathe wherever and whenever you can! ✨⠀ ⠀ ✨ if you want to meditate, it’s best to sit down and do it here and now.✨ ⠀ ⠀ Now that I am back home after all that running around. The mystery can happen as a function of genuinely not knowing where to look or what to look for when trying to understand one's motivation. Or, it could a be self-deceit strategy that serves as a defense against sadness, and fear of sadness In other words, it defensively addresses the fear of sadness and the sadness itself in the effort to remain “undisturbed” by some past or present or future loss. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ These losses are something that we know we already know, so this is where the self deception comes in. We're kind of pretending to "not know" when we actually do know. We suppress the feeling states, we “modify” the meaning, and reduce the significance of the loss pain and loss event. Bottom line, It’s a defensive operation to help us avoid having to deal with something painful.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But it's really only in dealing with the painful things that we're going to get closure right? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Still, almost everyone reading this has done that, or some version of that, more than once in their life.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So over the holidays, those of us who are using the defensive strategy can end up being flooded by unwanted loss "realities"-- all of our historic sadness and our future sadness is pinging up on the sonar inside our hearts, and we weren't expecting it. This is a time when the deeper parts of the ocean of our unconscious are being heard. We don't dive deep in order to hear them just because it’s the holidays. But the season can act like the siren’s call that pulls us below (or above) our normal conscious everyday self.
