APOLLO XlV : ⠀ ⠀ The Apollo 14 mission was the third manned lunar landing mission. Its objective was to perform detailed scientific lunar exploration. The space vehicle with a crew of Alan B. Shepard, Jr., the commander; Stuart A. Roosa, the command module pilot; and Edgar D. Mitchell, the lunar module pilot, was launched from Kennedy Space Center, Fla., at 4:03:22 EST on January 31, 1971.⠀ ⠀ The touchdown occurred at 08:37:10 GMT, February 5, within 50m (160 ft) of the target point in the Fra Mauro highlands. The first extravehicular activity (EVA) began 5 hr 23 min after touchdown.⠀ ⠀ The objectives of the Apollo 14 mission were lunar surface science, lunar orbital science, and operational/engineering. ⠀ ⠀ A color television camera mounted on the descent stage provided live coverage of the descent of both astronauts to the lunar surface. The crew deployed the U.S. flag and and the solar-wind composition experiment, erected the S-band antenna, and off-loaded the modularized equipment transporter (MET), laser ranging retroreflector (LRRR), and the Apollo lunar-surface experiments package (ALSEP).⠀ ⠀ The second EVA was a planned extended geological traverse of Cone Crater. All equipment required for the geological traverse, including the lunar portable magnetometer (LPM), was loaded on the MET. The traverse up the side of Cone Crater provided experience in climbing and working in hilly terrain in 1/6 earth gravity conditions. This EVA lasted 4 hr and 20 min, during which time the astronauts traveled approximately 3 km.⠀ ⠀ Liftoff occurred at 18:48 GMT, February 6, after 33 hr on the lunar surface. After crew transfer, the LM ascent stage was separated and remotely guided to impact on the lunar surface. Impact occurred between Apollo 12 and 14 seismometers. The resulting seismic signal lasted for 1.5 hr and was recorded by both instruments.⠀ ⠀ The command module splashed down in the Pacific Ocean approximately 1 km from the target point at 20:24 GMT, February 9, 1971. ⠀ ⠀

#ProjectBasedLearning #ToInfinityAndBeyond #ElevaDreams #Apollo50 #Apollo50th

New #Acquisition: Long before Apollo 11 landed on the moon in 1969 and stunned television viewers across the world, the moon had captivated eighteenth-century European poets like Goethe, who saw it as a source of yearning, solitude, and despair. The romantic spirit of the past is captured on this cup and saucer made by the Vienna Imperial Porcelain Manufactory in 1804. The cup shows on one side a full moon surrounded by parting clouds and a starry night sky on the other side. The cup’s handle and the edge of the saucer have been intentionally tarnished, perhaps to mimic the effects of moonlight. - - - 📸Imperial Porcelain Manufactory, Cup and saucer, (German, 1804). They arrived when I was in the hospital and when I finally got home, contrary to the Doctors’ recommendations, I asked Nanny Eli to bring them to me so I could kiss their foreheads. As you know, I have a Lioness called Odyssey, in Honor of the Apollo 13 mission. So these two Lions are dedicated to President John F. Kennedy, to Gene Kranz, to Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin (Whom I met in LA), Michael Collins, Jim Lovell, Kenneth Mattingly, Fred Haise, Jack Swigert, to all the Astronauts that made this dream possible, and obviously, to all the unknown geniuses at NASA that made us dream through their hard and incomparable work. Oh, and to Walter Cronkite, whose voice will always be connected to the space adventure. May Humanity soon share more memories like the Apollo dream. May Humanity unite through these dreams, and may Humanity, while we reach to the stars, find a way to respect our Planet. These two cubs are a tribute to what’s good and Sacred inside of all of us, for they represent nothing but Purity. Over the past three years #astronautharrison and I have had so many fantastic adventures and our car, nicknamed “The Vomit Comet”, has been there for them all. Whether it was a drive to the park down the street, the road trip for our gallery show in Washington, DC and New York, a chance to meet a real astronaut, and explore our everyday world in a thousand other ways. After a recent road-trip around Ohio to celebrate #Apollo50 it was definitely time to show the ‘Comet some love so we partnered with Ricart Automotive to send the Vomit Comet for a spa day! Their 'Sparkle Day’ service included pick-up and drop-off with use of a loaner, hand-washing/claying of the exterior, vacuuming and shampooing of the interior, and was finished with JaxWax liquid wax and tire/wheel shining. Three things happened when we got the Comet back: I was amazed that they got every crumb, stain, and odor out leaving the interior looking brand new. I realized I forgot to take Harry’s booster seat out of the trunk and found it correctly installed and also spotless. My wife realized the car was a sparkly graphite and not a “dirty” navy blue. Thank you Ricart for helping us pamper the Comet without having to give up a day of exploring (and for sponsoring this post)! #ad #sponsored #sparkleday #ricart #ricartautomotive #subaruforester

The cacti might seem odd to some, but it’s a continuation of Kim Poor’s “Leaving Town” painting, in which cacti we’re launching to an unknown destination from Tucson. In this patch, the same 3 cacti are landing on the moon, symbolically coming full circle. Part of the Earth is reflected in the astronaut’s visor for two reasons. First, as a nod to the accomplishments of the US Space Program. Second, it’s meant as a reminder of our connectedness on this “Pale Blue Dot” and that each of us has the power to impact the planet—our home—and strive to make real our image of a better world. The little red star on the reflection of Earth in the astronaut’s visor marks Tucson, where the Spacefest vision began and where so many of us made friends that are now like family. My hope is that every Spacefest attendee can find something to relate to and celebrate in this patch.” - @abbygarrettart ❤️ . . . #spaceart #NASA #missionpatch #sciart #apollo50 #tucson #kimpoor #alanbean #lunarlanding
