Bit of a #geek when it comes to #archaeological #sites. #Ksar es-Seghir We happened upon this incredible site that dates back 2500 years on the road to #Tangier (after #Ceuta ) #meditteraneansea Established by the #Phoenicians and later #romans, and then eventually taken over by the #portuguese. There were mosaic floors still in tact! Don’t miss if you love #ancientculture #archaeology #history Full museum. Today students of #MAMS visited the #Archaeological Museum, Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya, Hardwar which was established during the fostering years of the Gurukul in 1907-08 on the eastern bank of the holy #Ganges. It is more than a century old #institution of #national importance. The main aim to establish it was to give #knowledge of India's rich ancient #culture and #civilization to the #students as well as to the common people. The students learned that the #heritage refers to practises that are passed down through the year, from one generation to the next which includes culture, tradition, clothing, flora, fauna and also historical monuments. at Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya

Lille Hareskov Langdysse Located in a forest just south of Farum, Denmark is a collection of various prehistoric monuments ranging from Neolithic dolmens and long barrows to Bronze Age burial mounds. - - Located in the central part of the forest near two other dolmens, which I’ll cover in my next posts, are a collection of various large and small stones. The area is believed to be the badly damaged remains of a long barrow from the Neolithic that would’ve been built sometime between 3500 BCE and 3200 BCE. The stones are spread across an area with a total length of 12 metres and a width of 7 metres. However, the site is notable for having a stone with a straight groove running through it (seen in picture 4 of this post). Archaeologists are still puzzled about what groove stones were used for or what they symbolised. Groove stones have been found at or near other prehistoric sites in other parts of Denmark and the world. Whether the groove stones are actually from prehistoric times or closer to modern times is still in debate.

Terracotta group of women seated around a well head | 2nd half of 4th century B.C. | Greek | Tarentine (The Metropolitan Museum of Art) - Incense burners (Greek thymiateria) were important cult implements throughout the ancient Mediterranean world. This South Italian terracotta example of the second half of the 4th century B.C. is exceptionally complex and rare: five women crowned with flowers are shown around a wellhead. The iconography reflects a local cult, probably that of Demeter and Kore who were widely worshipped in Southern Italy and Sicily at the time. . . . . . #ancient #naturephotography #ancienthistory #ancientgreece #ancientarchitecture #heritage #ancientworld #archaeological #history #archaeologist #archaeology #classical #archeologia #archeology #photooftheday #art #arthistory #fineart #greece #ig_greece #pottery #heritage #explorer #explore #travelphotography #travel #sicily #museum #culture #terracotta

Happy World Heritage Day This is the only surviving tower of the four that were once a part of the Church of St. Augustine. In 1986, UNESCO declared the place as a World Heritage Site. This complex was built by the Augustinian order. It comprised the church of Our Lady of Grace, the Convent of Saint Augustine .The church is dedicated to Our Lady of Grace. Its construction was started in 1597 and was completed around 1602. Originally comprising of four towers and a massive vault, the dimensions of this superb edifice placed it on par with the great imperial cathedrals of the Renaissance era. #st.Augustinetower #heritage #heritageplace #architecture #archaeological #goanheritage #goan #goa #instagood #instapic #instagramer #instagram at St. Augustine Tower, Old Goa

Ancient Aptera Aptera was one of the most significant city-states of Crete. The site is located on a plateau of an altitude of 200m above Souda Bay, about 15 km away from the city of Chania on the road towards Rethymno. The two city ports of Minoa (today’s Marathi) and Kisamo (current Kalives) made Aptera one of the most important commercial centers of Crete. Its inhabitants were skilful archers and fought as mercenaries bringing back wealth to their land. The site’s history begins from the Minoan Period (3500- 1070 BC), however there are traces dating back to the Geometric Period (1000- 685 BC), the Hellenistic Period (323- 67 BC) and the Roman Empire (67 BC - 324 AD #ancienttheatre #aptera this is #ancientaptera #ancient #greece from this area you have a lovely #view to #soudabay and #lefkaori #chania #kreta #crete #ancientgreece #cretanplaces #khania #apokoronas #discover_apokoronas #discovercrete #travelingday #travelcrete #travelpicture #cretanplaces #cretanstories #cretanvillage #ancientcrete #travelguide #discover_chania #archaeological #kretakristina #view #travelpicture #mediterraneanlife #romanstyle Opening times: the archaeological site Aptera is open during all year daily (except Mondays and National Holidays) from 08.00 to 15.oo hrs. at Aptera, Greece

#StonehengeANewUnderstanding: Solving the Mysteries of the Greatest Stone Age Monument #MikeParkerPearson #TheExperiment, Jun 4, 2013 - #SocialScience - 432 pages Stonehenge stands as an enduring link to our prehistoric ancestors, yet the secrets it has guarded for thousands of years have long eluded us. Until now, the millions of enthusiasts who flock to the iconic site have made do with mere speculation—about Stonehenge’s celestial significance, human sacrifice, and even aliens and druids. One would think that the numerous research expeditions at Stonehenge had left no stone unturned. Yet, before #theStonehengeRiversideProject—a hugely ambitious, seven-year dig by today’s top archaeologists—all previous digs combined had only investigated a fraction of the monument, and many records from those earlier expeditions are either inaccurate or incomplete. Stonehenge—A New Understanding rewrites the story. From 2003 to 2009, author Mike Parker Pearson led the Stonehenge Riverside Project, the most comprehensive excavation ever conducted around #Stonehenge. The project unearthed a wealth of fresh evidence that had gone untouched since prehistory. Parker Pearson uses that evidence to present a paradigm-shifting theory of the true significance that Stonehenge held for its builders—and mines his field notes to give you a you-are-there view of the dirt, drama, and thrilling discoveries of this #history-changing #archaeological dig. #acpl #librarybooks #nonfiction at Allen County Public Library

#Hellenistic #marble #sculpture #Archaeological #Museum  #Naples #Greek  #globe #italia #beniculturali30 #archeologia #Italy #historia #storia #history #archaeology #roman #rome #ancientrome #romanempire #classicart #classic

Here I am in my happy place again, perched beside an Early Classic stucco mask of the Sun God. This giant mask adorned the Northeast corner of the original Temple of the Night Sun, and is situated beside it's celestial companion Chahk, the Storm God (see first photo). These giant masks (there are 14 in total) extend around all sides of the temple walls and were painted a deep, saturated red in their prime. This stark colour contrast against the deep green of the jungle must have been both terrifying and mesmerizing. This photo is from 2017 when I had the pleasure and privilege of helping to photograph the ongoing excavation of this site in the jungles of northern Guatemala. Vravron | Attica | Greece - photo by @iokastik - Vravron lies beside a small bay about 38 km from Athens. The sanctuary of Vravrona was dedicated to goddess Artemis and it was connected with childbirth and was worshiped by women. Her cult statue have been brought from the Crimea by Iphigeneia and Orestes. Iphigeneia herself was supposed to be buried there. The celebrations in honor of the goddess were called Vravronia and included music events, sports games and recitation of poems. . . . . . #ancient #naturephotography #ancienthistory #ancientgreece #ancientarchitecture #ancientruins #ancientworld #archaeological #archaeologicalsite #archaeologist #archaeology #archaeologystudent #archeologia #archeology #architecture #art #arthistory #fineart #greece #ig_greece #architecturephotography #history #explorer #explore #travelphotography #travel #athens #monument #landscape #landscapephotography

🔘Animal Mummification -originated in ancient Egypt. They mummified various animals. It was an enormous part of Egyptian culture, not only in their role as food and pets, but also for religious reasons. They were typically mummified for four main purposes—to allow beloved pets to go on to the afterlife, to provide food in the afterlife, to act as offerings to a particular god, and because some were seen as physical manifestations of specific gods that the Egyptians worshipped. Bast, the cat goddess is an example of one such deity. . 💠 Follow me @ancient.scientist . . #archaeology #archeology #archeologia #arqueologia #egypt #archaeologie #antiquearchaeology #archaeological #ancientbuilding #archaeologicalsite #archeologicalsite #ancientarchitecture #ancientruins #ancient #ancientworld #archaeologylovers #heritage #archaeologist #archaeologylife #travelchina #china #greatwallofchina #chinese #sunsets #greek #history

🔹{MOAI }🔹 🔘Are monolithic human figures carved by the Rapa Nui people on Easter Island in eastern Polynesia between the years 1250 and 1500.In addition to representing deceased ancestors, the moai, once they were erected on ahu, may also have been regarded as the embodiment of powerful living or former chiefs and important lineage status symbols. Nearly half are still at Rano Raraku, the main moai quarry, but hundreds were transported from there and set on stone platforms called ahu around the island's perimeter. Almost all moai have overly large heads three-eighths the size of the whole statue. The moai are chiefly the living faces (aringa ora) of deified ancestors (aringa ora ata tepuna). The statues still gazed inland across their clan lands when Europeans first visited the island in 1722, but all of them had fallen by the latter part of the 19th century. 🔘The production and transportation of the more than 900 statues are considered remarkable creative and physical feats. The tallest moai erected, called Paro, was almost 10 metres (33 ft) high and weighed 82 tonnes (90.4 short tons). The heaviest moai erected was a shorter but squatter moai at Ahu Tongariki, weighing 86 tonnes. One unfinished sculpture, if completed, would have been approximately 21 m (69 ft) tall, with a weight of about 145-165 tons (160-182 metric tons). The moai were toppled in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, possibly as a result of European contact or internecine tribal wars. 🔵🔷🔶🔵🔷🔶🔵🔷🔶🔵🔷 Follow @ancient.scientist . . #archaeology #archeology #archeologia #arqueologia #egypt #archaeologie #antiquearchaeology #archaeological #ancientbuilding #archaeologicalsite #archeologicalsite #ancientarchitecture #ancientruins #ancient #ancientworld #archaeologylovers #heritage #archaeologist #archaeologylife #travelchina #china #greatwallofchina #chinese #sunsets #greek #history
