New York's SoHo. South of Houston. That's the newish moniker used by preservationists to rescue this now-hip area, nestled west of Crosby Street between Houston ("House-ton") and Canal Streets. . These were farms and meadowlands until the early 19th century, when the the city grew north upon the island and streets were cut through. Soon this became a fashionable area of brick rowhouses and shops (see my stories re the oldest extant building hereabouts, now the delish @onekingslane store). By the 1860's, these once-sleepy blocks were filling up with shops, warehouses, entertainment emporiums, and hotels. Enter one James Bogardus, architect-inventor, who pioneered the use of molded metal facades to create buildings that were modeled on classic architecture, yet were far less costly and far more durable than stone. This ingenuity was soon adapted on a mass scale in SoHo, hence creating the monumental Cast Iron District. Today it is the greatest surviving collection of such buildings in the world. The arches, pediments and columns of Old Europe were now easily and cheaply mimicked right here in the New World. SoHo is a magnificent historic district, yet it fell to neglect once Manhattan's center of gravity moved north. By the 1960's, cheap rents in the crumbling, often-abandoned buildings of Soho attracted artists and bohemians. Many of the residents then were squatting here illegally. Soon celebrities such as Andy Warhol and David Bowie moved in, and folks began taking note of the area, its character and its spacious lofts. Today a home here runs in the many millions $$$. The cobbled streets are once again lined with exclusive shops, hotels, bars and restaurants.  I remember those gritty, derelict streets and do not shed a tear to see the polished, gentrified, still-charming SoHo of today. It's a beauty, isn't it? . . 👆See my stories for more on Soho as well one of my fave NYC haunts, The Crosby Street Hotel. Duh, it's designed by Kit Kemp👆 #facadelovers

Spent the evening in my least favourite place (up the scaffolding) - Dave was doing the waste pipes and I was sanding down the masonry window surrounds ready for painting tomorrow. At least it was a beautiful evening and our lovely new neighbours passed us up a cold beer 🍻 #newneighbours #scaffoldinglife ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #thestreathamproject #myrenostory #renovation #before and after #renovationjourney #archigram #renovator #homeowners #totalrenovation #terracedhouse #londonrenovation #victorianterrace #building

Madeira ripada é uma ótima opção para revestir paredes de lavabo, para o deixar intimista e esconder as janelas que costumam ser nada atraentes 😉

Over the weekend, our Managing Principal Greg Minott joined a group of residents, planners, designers, and other community stakeholders at the Healthy Chinatown Design Workshop. We discussed how do we preserve the culture of a changing working-class immigrant neighborhood, where the median household income is 33% of Boston’s AMI and 17.2% of families below the poverty line? How do we preserve and create more affordable housing? What are important businesses to attract, like a supermarket, to support residents and families? These are just a few of the main issues discussed, along with healthy housing, mobility, open spaces, green infrastructure strategy, and certain key landmarks/parcels in Boston’s Chinatown. Overall, It was great seeing the passion, commitment, and innovative problem solving from everyone who came out! We look forward to continuing the discussion! . . . @mapcmetroboston @cityofboston #affordablehousing  #plandowntown #planchinatown #diversityandinclusion #socialjustice #urbanarchitecture #architecture #architectureandpeople #bostonarchitecture #archigram #architecture_boston #workplace #urbanplanning #urbandesign #architecture4all

. Fizemos muito mais que história, fizemos arte! . Parte 4
