Arctic Terns make the longest flights each year of any bird on Earth. Every year they migrate from the Northern Arctic areas where they live, to Antarctica where they winter during the Antarctica summer. They fly back again to the Arctic to breed the following year. В малодоступных фьордах и скалы зеленее (и птиц больше, и острова со скалами симпатичнее). На фотографиях кусочки Ванмайнфьорда, острова Аксель, который перегораживает фьорд скальной полоской, и стайки птиц. Июнь и июль на Шпицбергене это какое-то невероятное изобилие жизни - чистики, моевки, бургомистры, куропатки, гаги, гуси, крачки, пуночки, кулики, песцы, олени, кот Кеша, малые полосатики, белухи, нерпы, лахтаки... и столько же, сколько жизни - информации о ней вокруг меня. Кит, оказывается, воняет (нюхала), нерпы подходят очень близко, белухи любят высокие звуки, песцы не едят печеньки, пуночки летят из Казахстана, крачки зимуют в Тасмании и Антарктиде, а один папа-пуночка кормил детей только макаронами. Today I arrived in Svea, an small ex mining town on the artitic island of Spitsbergen, Svalbard. The island is located at the boarders of the arctic sea and lies ca. 1200 km from the north pole. In the 17th and 18th century, the island were used for whaling. Coal mining started here in the 19th century and I am here to work on documenting the mine structures with my colleagues from @niku_archaeology. Hoping to get a glimpse of the polarbear while I am here. . . The first picture is of an actual polarbear footprint, just some meters from where I am working. Hvalross på Svalbard. 5. Juli tok vi båten til øya Forlandet. Det var ganske røff sjø. Vertfall tilbake turen da det var 5 meter høye bølger. Og vi fikk ikke til å gå i land for å se på Hvalrossene med de bølgene. At home, thinking back to days in the fjells. As always, I feel slightly unreal about it all. I see these young, fit and healthy people stride so lightly on the rocks that I step so very carefully on, I know I'm slow as a turtle and certainly not graceful, but I know also that I am persistent. Some people call me tough. Maybe I am. But what it comes down to is believing, believing that despite being middle aged, chronically ill, officially disabled, plus sized and all that comes with these, I can. Some limits are real, most are only in our minds. Just because it's difficult, does not mean it's impossible. 💜💜💜
