Day 2 of Dr. Stephanie Langin-Hooper's summer social media take-over: My dining room table has become my classroom! This was my teaching space for my May Term class on the War, Looting, and Collecting of Ancient Art. Two laptops and enough home-brewed hot tea powered me through remote teaching, and the Zoom format allowed me to invite two fantastic guest speakers on Art Crime Law and the ethics of museum displays of human remains (such as Egyptian mummies). But despite some virtual advantages, I still prefer to be in the real classroom with my students! #smuarthistory #smumeadows #keepgoingmeadows #meadowsmindset #arthistory #arthistory #zoomclassroom

Many contemporary artists look back at the art-historical canon to locate its absences and erasures, and trust me, there are plenty to go around. Kerry James Marshall takes matters into his own hands by normalizing the presence of the Black figure in Western art history. In "Gulf Stream" at @walkerartcenter, Marshall transforms a well-known painting – Winslow Homer’s 1899 "The Gulf Stream"– to remark on the authenticity of Black experience. In Homer’s enigmatic version, a solitary Black figure appears to be way too chill about being stuck in a broken-down boat in the middle of dangerous, shark-infested waters. With a pretty bleak take on the figure’s situation, scholars have interpreted Homer’s painting as a depiction of contemporary racial tensions in the United States. But what did Homer really know about this? Although he might have been sympathetic, he was still a white man trying to depict the Black experience. As a child of the Civil Rights era, Marshall was aware of the construction of Black identity from an early age. This is why, in his version, the Black figures are not helpless victims. Instead, they’re the heroes of their own story, taking control of the narrative. Marshall’s "Gulf Stream" figures are a far cry from the man who seems to accept his hopeless situation. #kerryjamesmarshall #artspeaks #blackartmatters #blackartists #africanamericanart #contemporaryart #gulfstream #arthistory #historyofart #arthistory101 #artlovers #artmuseum #arthistorian #artnerd #blackart #americanart #acrylicpainting #dailyart #artforthepeople #museumfromhome #walkerartcenter

June 4, 1859 – battle of Magenta took place during the Second Italian War of Independence, in the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia under Austrian Empire rule. King Vittorio Emanuele II of Sardinia, Savoy and Nice wanted to unify Italy as one kingdom. He allied with Napoleon III, emperor of France, to kick the Austrians out of northern provinces. As a result, the Austrian Empire troops, led by Marshal Gyulai, invaded the Kingdom of Sardinian near Milan before the French came to rescue their ally. One of the battles happened in Magenta. Thanks to better tactical moves, the French infantry outmaneuvered their enemy on the right flank and well-used artillery, supported by Italian troops, forced Gyulai to retreat. We’ll see that later this month Austria lost again, at Solferino, and ceded Lombardy to France, which gave it to Sardinia as an agreement of their alliance in exchange of Nice and Savoy. This event helped the unification of Italy by Vittorio Emanuele II and supported by many Italians across all provinces. #history #frenchhistory #france #war #battle #kingoffrance #worldhistory #historymemes #historynerd #historylover #historyfacts #historylesson #historyphoto #historyteacher #historybuff #historyinthemaking #historia #histoire #histoiredefrance #arthistory #historical #castle #chateau #todayinhistory #heritage #onedayonebattle #napoleoniii #empereur #nineteenthcentury #secondempire

#repost from @sylvangallery ・・・ Shirley Cean Youngs has a special way of capturing nature’s gentle spirit. Painting in the Impressionist style that has been a long tradition in the Connecticut community of artists, she has put her heart and soul into every painting for over forty years. Her gardens, the river and wildlife around her home, as well as trips to the Maine coastline provide her with continual inspiration. A reviewer for the New York Times described Youngs as “capturing the beauty of life depicted. She paints in the tradition of Degas and Mary Cassatt and certainly will be cherished as one of Connecticut’s finest American Impressionists.” To learn more about Shirley Cean Youngs, please visit her bio page on our website: www.sylvangallery.com/artists/shirley-cean-youngs “Little Magic Moments” by Shirley Cean Youngs oil on canvas, 18” x 24” #sylvangallery #wiscasset #maine #maineartgallery #maineart #mainecoast #americanimpressionism #impressionistpainter #fineartcollector #pleinairpainting #contemporarylandscape #arthistory #summertime #childrenonthebeach #marycassett #artforthesoul #artforyourwalls #interiordesign #mainegalleryguide #shirleyceanyoungs

Revisiting snapshots from Kerry James Marshall’s “Mastry” exhibition that I was lucky enough to see in Chicago in 2016. These are only a few highlights, it’s impossible to capture it all in one post... he had 80 works up, after all! KJM uses “classic” references and techniques to rewrite art history with a black voice and unapologetically black (quite literally) figures, making us rethink everything we thought we knew about “Art History”. . • #peterpaulrubens #arthistory #medici

Portrait of Louis de Caix d’Hervelois and Marie-Anne de Caix - French School, 18th century • • History Time: The Pardessus de Viole Why is Marie-Anne de Caix playing a violin on her lap? Well, she is but she isn’t. This is the Pardessus de Viole, a baroque instrument stemming from 1700s aristocratic France. The Pardessus de Viole is a member of the viol family, with pardessus de Viole meaning “above the viol.” It is the smallest member of the gamba family, therefore meant to be played in the lap - but consider it a hybrid between the viola da gamba and violin! This instrument became popular in early 18th century France, and was primarily played by women. Women of the time were forbid to play the violin, as it was a “masculine” instrument that was heald on the shoulder (apparently unladylike). Women wanted to play the very popular music of Corelli and other baroque composers, so this instrument was born. The Pardessus had frets like any other viol instrument, but also had some violin like characteristics, specifically it’s ability to be very virtuosic in nature thanks to the hybrid tuning. Pardessus can have 5-6 strings, with 5 being the most standard and popular. The strings are tuned in fifths and fourths - G, D, A, D”, and G”. The instrument fell out of favor during the French Revolution as it was categorized as an elitist instrument. That being said, eat the rich!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! • • #art #arthistory #musichistory #baroquemusic #viol #violin #violadagamba #pardessusdeviole #frenchart

Ivan Aivazovsky - The Wave (c. 1889) - Private Collection ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Painted by the Russian Romanticist artist Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky (1817-1900). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- "The Wave interrupts a sequence of vacant and powerfully physical seascapes that began with The Black Sea in 1881 and ended with The Waves in 1898. This version differs in that it returns to Aivazovsky's old theme of the shipwrecked mariners, but it differs too from all the earlier variants on that theme because of its abandonment of hope. There is no sunlight breaking through here, no rainbow, nothing to pray to, no sense of the storm abating and life clinging on with some prospect of rescue. If anything, the wave here seems about to bring a certain end to life. Even Aivazovsky's sky is different, no longer a thin wash but almost an angry continuation of the ocean, closing in on the scene of hopelessness. Where there was typically pathos in the desperation of Aivazovsky's many storm-tossed sailors, because they clung on with some slender prospect of surviving, here the human seems foolhardy and doomed, the vision entirely unsentimental. What we see in Aivazovsky's late seascapes is his favorite subject - the sea itself - reclaiming its elemental power. The painter's own energetic engagement with the painted surface seems to have marked these late seascapes with a physical intensity that contrasts with his pale, romanticized evocations of old lands and picturesque shores." James Rosenquist (1933-2017)| American Pop artist known for his monumental paintings and prints. Often appropriating commercial imagery, his montage-like works combined popular culture, Surrealism, and historical painting methods. “Much of the aesthetic of my work comes from doing commercial art,” the artist once said. “I painted pieces of bread, Arrow shirts, movie stars. It was very interesting. Before I came to New York I wanted to paint the Sistine Chapel. I thought this is where the school of mural painting exists.” The artist's early career as a commercial sign painter ended in 1960, after witnessing two coworkers fall to their deaths from a scaffold. Focused on his career, Rosenquist moved to a studio in Lower Manhattan, where he met other artists such as Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Indiana, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Jack Youngerman.

Κάτι που συνοψίζεται στο: It's art cause I say so. #marcelduchamp #artistic_greece #artistsoninstagram #arthistory #knowwhatyouwant #life_greece

'Spirite' by George Roux, 1885 ✨ I feel like this painting is so intriguing. Who is that woman? A stranger to the man, a family member of his, his lover or a muse maybe? And how come the man can see that spirit, has she appeared to him or does he actually only hear the piano's music in his office? I really like 'Spirite' because you can imagine so many possibilities (I didn't find any information, so that helps too, I guess 😅) and because it's very elegant and detailed! Just look at the spirit's dress and how she actually creates light in the room ✨ I also think George Roux beautifully illustrated the shadows and light contrasts! If you know anything more about this painting or have other theories, be sure to share your thoughts 🤗 #art #artoftheday #genreart #artlovers #arthistory #georgeroux #spirite #painting

Let's go back to history now. (This one I was not sure as if to post because it is portraying a slave owner, but I believe presenting this artist is more important!) Painting made by Prince Demah from 1773. Prince Demah was a protratist and a slave from Boston who according to research presented by MET had a chance to briefly study art in England. Three paintings are so far attributed to him, but I hope that trough future technical research we will find more. I will not post any information about the sitter or Prince Demahs owners as this is not about them! More research needs to be done and the idea of slaves not creating needs to be debunked! It is time to accept that not only white man had artistic tendencies and skills during the Early modern times. . . . #blacklivesmatter #africanamericanartist #arthistoryteacher #arthistory #africanamericanarthistory

TITUS. K A P H A R : an artist known for his incisive paintings that reimagine famous art-historical imagery in an attempt to open the works’ complicated racial politics, has made a leap to one of the world’s top galleries - Gagosian - which has 18 locations worldwide & has revealed that it now represents the artist, who is based in New Haven, Connecticut. 🎥 @madbasic • Kaphar’s practice seeks to dislodge history from its status as the “past” in order to unearth its contemporary relevance. He cuts, crumples, shrouds, shreds, stitches, tars, twists, binds, erases, breaks, tears, and turns the paintings and sculptures he creates, reconfiguring them into works that reveal unspoken truths about the nature of history. Open areas become active absences; walls enter into the portraits; stretcher bars are exposed; and structures that are typically invisible underneath, behind, or inside the canvas are laid bare to reveal the interiors of the work. In so doing, Kaphar’s aim is to reveal something of what has been lost and to investigate the power of a rewritten history. —————— Take a look at one of my favorite TED Talks featuring the artist, here: https://www.ted.com/talks/titus_kaphar_can_art_amend_history?utm_campaign=tedspread&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=tedcomshare . . . . #tituskaphar #art #painting #fineart #figurativeart #sculpture #artist #macarthurFellow #genius #la #resist #moma #moca #lacma #gagosian #abstractart #nyc #contemporaryart #newhaven #blackisbeautiful #fbf #vote #25thamendment #history #caam #nojusticenopeace #nxthvn #arthistory #tbt @__nxthvn__

today we’re elevating the photography of Gordon Parks. Please take time today to look at his stunning photographs. In the 1930’s the Farm Security Association deployed a handful of photographers across America to document apolitically how well the New Deal was working and to romanticize small town America. This was obviously impossible and the entire project just highlighted disparities between the way white and minority communities benefitted from the New Deal. The contrast was ugly. Parks was the only Black photographer working on the project and his work from the time was stunning, placing juxtapositions in many of his photographs to highlight the severe inequalities. This photo mirrors the composition of Grant Wood’s small town American romanticism in “American Gothic” but is a commentary on the labor Black people were still literally forced to do, with the American flag in the background serving as a reminder of the hypocrisy of the phrase “land of the free”. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••——putting my series on pause to elevate black artists for awhile. My degree is in contemporary art history and art history in general is well known to be a white field and is guilty of rarely even speaking about black artist and other artists of color. I spent a semester studying race in 1930’s photography including much of Park’s work and I’m lucky to go to a very diverse college where we take so much time to learn about these artists and I hope that I’m contributing appropriately with my knowledge of art history right now. Black art should be taught in every art history school across the country and it’s not at all. Black art is important and learning about it is important if we want to continue to educate ourselves on how to be better as white people. #blacklivesmatter #blackarthistory #arthistory #ftp #mexicansforblacklivesmatter

——————————————————————————— #art #cityscape #beniculturali30 #masterpiece #patron #church #romanesque #medievalart #impressive #verona #architecturephotography #artphotography #antique #italy #artlovers #architecture #romanesquearchitecture #building #culture #heritage #masterpiece #instaart #artphotography #sanzeno #italianart #fineart #beauty #arthistory #altar #veneto #light #takemetochurch
