A day late as April 2nd was National Autism Awareness Day, but I still wanted to post and represent 💙 . As someone who wasn’t diagnosed with autism until turning 22, I always had this idea of what an autistic person was based on what I had seen portrayed in the media I consumed. And let’s just say, unless you’re a genius, society doesn’t place a lot of value on autistic people 😔 . When I’m finally comfortable with a person enough to let them know that I’m autistic, I always get the same response “Wow! Really? I would have never guessed, you hide it really well”. I know in their mind that’s a compliment, but I don’t take it as such. It just highlights how much people view autism as negative and it’s “good” to pass as “normal”. . Every autistic person displays their symptoms differently, hence why it’s called a Spectrum 🌈. I for one, lean towards the Asperger’s end with being a neuro minority in being labeled a “protégée “ (their words not mine 😖). I don’t deal with people well outside of my immediate family, and am often found stimming because I get easily overwhelmed. . I’m happy to see more representation in the media for the autistic community, like in one of my favorite games, Overwatch! The character Symmetra is canonically autistic and is a really cool character that is smart and strong 💪 . We still have a long way to go to see Autism as more accepted and normal (about 1 in 59 kids are diagnosed with autism), but I’m hopeful for the future 😊 . #nationalautismawarenessday #lightitupblue #autismawareness #autismawarenessmonth #highfunctioningautism #aspergerssyndrome

I see this kind of post every so often; as it’s World Autism Awareness Week, I thought I should re-introduce myself. 👋 Hello! My name is Lydia. I’m a twenty one year old freelance journalist with an NCTJ qualification. My work has appeared in The Independent, Readers Digest, Refinery 29 and more. I was also a recipient of the Journalism Diversity Fund in 2017. I was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome/Autism Spectrum Disorder in January 2015. After around three and a half years waiting - possibly impacted due to my gender - I finally had a diagnosis. I like to play certain songs repetitively, have issues with proprioception and interoception, and also have special interests. (Ask me anything about Queen, World War Two and Anne Frank, and I could probably tell you all you need to know 😉) I also describe myself as hypersensitive; I have no mechanism to filter sound. It can be distressing, but also adds to my appreciation of music. I’m also a bibliophile. I love to travel, and recently flew by myself for the first time. I have interviewed people like Sir Harold Evans, Anastacia (“I’m Outta Love”), and Lissie. You can also find me on Twitter; I have a new newsletter, too. 🌟

Tight hugs is a form of deep pressure which gives my son proprioceptive input for his muscles and joints which helps regulate and calm him. Weighted blankets and swinging are two of his other favourites. #spd #sensoryprocessingdisorder #asd #autismawarenessmonth #aspiegirl #autismsupport #asdmom #autismparentingmagazine #neurodiversity #neurodiversityacceptance #aspergerssyndrome #aspergersyndrome #aspergers

After so long of being ashamed of being autistic, I’m finally starting to embrace myself for who I am and celebrate it as I wouldn’t be me if I wasn’t. This account is for that, I’ll be posting a lot of things related to autism and my own experiences. For those wondering, I was diagnosed with asperger’s syndrome meaning I function normally but it affects my life in a lot of ways. I am not sick and do not need to be cured, this is who I am. #aspergerssyndrome #autismacceptancemonth

The number of times I’ve been miss understood or interpreted because of my directness is countless. Nowadays, there are times I can hear what I am saying that is seen as offensive or rude. Other times I am convinced that my way of speaking is clearer and they are “reading” too much into it or getting offended for no reason. • • • #Repost @theautisticlife ・・・ Can you relate? #autism #autistic #actuallyautistic #autisticadults #autisticteens #autismo #autista #mujeresautistas #aspie #aspiegirl #aspergers #aspergerssyndrome #aspergerslife #neurodiversity #neurodiverse #neurodivergent #autismmoms #autismdads #autismparents #worldautismday #autismacceptancemonth #neurodiversityrocks #actuallyautistic #autism #aspiegirl #autismspectrum #autismgirls #highlysensitiveperson #highlysensitive #masking #introvert #neurodiversity #uniquelywired

As it’s #AutismAwarenessMonth I put together this vid on some of the facts & misconceptions of being on the #AutisticSpectrum like myself having #AspergersSyndrome -👩🏽‍🏫 From 2nd vid shown: 1️⃣Sensory Sensitivity 🔊 2️⃣Can be perceived as being ‘distant & cold’ from others.😑 3️⃣Understanding Certain Words & phrases, those that have double meaning.🤔💭⁉️ 4️⃣Autism & Aspergers Syndrome is a Hidden Disability. -Not every disability is visible, it is a learning disability.🔬 5️⃣Being a woman with Aspergers, -Being less diagnosed than that of men being of the spectrum, women tend to mask having a disability as we try to adapt to our surroundings. Life lessons, understanding society & fitting in. 👩🏽‍🎤 Hope this will help those who are new to learning about the Autistic Spectrum understand the condition better, as well as help those who have Aspergers/Autism, family & friends of anyone on the spectrum. Etc. Also stay safe at home everyone!💛✌🏼 #autism #AutismAwareness #autismacceptance #aspergers #AspergersAwareness #aspergersacceptance #aspie #aspiegirl #aspiewoman #aspergirl #aspergerfemales #info #facts #lifelessons #growthmindset #hiddendisability #acceptance

Can you relate? Raise your hand if you have trouble noticing when you've said something rude. I think the main problem many autistics face — including me — is that NTs aren't inherently honest like we are. The vast majority of them tell little white lies to each other in mutual agreement, and they do it to persevere both their friendships and feelings. There are implications and so many layers of underlying intentions in their interactions. Most of us, on the other hand, are fueled by honesty, and the most significant piece of advice we could ever give to someone is the truth and nothing less than the truth. I personally appreciate it when people are blunt and straightforward with me, especially when I ask them to educate me on the social cues I miss. It helps me get better at it. It's frustrating, at times, not being able to pick-up when the mood suddenly changed right after a comment I did. Many times I've left a place thinking I did great when, in fact, I was seen as insensitive or rude. It used to happen a lot more often before my diagnosis, but now that I know where it comes from, I'm more mindful about it. That doesn't mean I'm good at it, but I try. . . . #autism #autistic #actuallyautistic #autisticadults #autisticteens #autismo #autista #mujeresautistas #aspie #aspiegirl #aspergers #aspergerssyndrome #aspergerslife #neurodiversity #neurodiverse #neurodivergent #autismmoms #autismdads #autismparents #autismmomsrock #autisticselfadvocacy #autismpride #redinstead #autismrights

There are some organisations out there which really support neurodivergent people and offer support, information and signposting which is useful accurate and goes based on listening to people who are actually on the spectrum, highlighting the things they're able to do instead of making this difference many people experience a negative money making scheme. I'm not at all saying that the organisations are at all perfect but they have good intentions Based on having a look for myself, the message that one of the organisations portrays are hurtful, negative and misleading which isn't what this community needs or should support Any thoughts? Leave them in the comments 🦄 #Autistic #Autism #WorldAutismAwarenessWeek #ActuallyAutistic #AutismPride #AutismMemes #AutisticandProud #AutismDiagnosis #AutisticGirls #AutisticGirl #WomenandAutism #AutisticAdult #AutisticWoman #AutisticWomen #WomenAreAutisticToo #Aspergers #AspergersSyndrome #Aspie #AspieWoman #AspieWomen #AspiesofInstagram #Neurodiversity #MentalHealth #OCD #INTJ #Anxiety #Anxious #Anxious_Female

Day 3: First Signs #LetsAutismTogether Have you ever watched parenthood? Max is a boy with Aspergers.... Max is Brother. That’s almost exactly how brother is and has been his whole life. . For as long as I can remember with him, he’s been terrified of all hygiene related things, he is beyond obsessed with Dinosaurs so much so that it’s all consuming. He’s a genius! He taps his fingers, he stims, he covers his ears to most noises, he goes from 0-60 over everything and sometimes nothing, he doesn’t pick up on social cues, he doesn’t lie or joke, he’s blunt, he won’t try new foods and gags at certain textures. He won’t touch dirty things even though he the dirtiest kid around and loves to be told he’s dirty and stinky hahaha! . Even with ALLLLL of this, it all should have been first signs from the beginning, I never put two and two together until my sister came to visit just after Brothers 4th birthday and pointed out what was right in front of my face. We got him evaluated and sure enough... he is on the spectrum. . I’m thankful for family who suggested we get it all looked at. Here we are today, because of those suggestions 🥰 . I added a video at the end of him Stimming. I just think it’s so cute haha.

Got cabin fever yet? Yeah, think we all are. All of us are going through some issues to varying degrees. I am certainly no different. This will certainly affect us for a long while in terms of mindset and how some companies will operate. Ones that haven't are either gone now or soon will be due to not a whole lot of preparation. - So then, are you taking this downtime to prepare or are you binge watching or playing video games all day long? - This is as good of an opportunity to get ahead as it gets right now. Set in new habits to get you roaring past when this stay at home order is lifted. Learning new skill sets. Deciding on how you want your life to go from this point forward. - Even taking this time to sit in silence would be beneficial. Taking the time to observe and discover what you really want in life instead of what advertisement s say you need. - Or you could blankly stare out a window like I am here for a couple of minutes to appreciate what I have, especially in comparison to other countries that have it MUCH worse than me. Even with Asperger's I am still pushing through all this, even if it makes me figuratively face myself in the mirror to my faults and any limiting beliefs I might still have.(I am human after all) - To take advantage of what I have instead of being like many others whining on social media about who's to blame and somehow drag the petty political garbage into it or spreading fear that is becoming even more infectious than the virus itself like so many others are at the moment. - Either way, up to you how you spend your time. No Refunds and Time doesn't have a Facebook Page for you to give a bad review in retaliation on how you use what Time gives you. - Use it wisely instead of treating it like it is an unlimited resource. - - - - - #successmindset #autisticphotographer #autisticartist #autisticperspective #autismacceptance #thoughtoftheday #autismawareness #personalgrowth #personalmastery #timeislimited #selfimprovement #aspergerssyndrome #autismlife #pandemic2020 #seetheworldthroughmyeyes #dosomethingdifferent #lifelessons #lifechallenges #moreaction #blamegame

MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT AUTISM 1. "autism is caused by vaccines." autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that is developed before birth. autistic people are born autistic, we don't become autistic. 2. "only boys can be autistic." autism is often overlooked and blamed on other things in children who were raised as girls, due to the different social expectations put on them. oftentimes, these people display symptoms differently than those who were raised as boys, but even scientists often don't recognise the differences and the intersection between autism and sociology and therefore mainly look for typical "boy symptoms" which leads to more people who were raised as boys to be diagnosed. it's a gender bias. 3. "high-functioning autistic people have a high IQ whereas low-functioning autistic people have a low IQ." now i already talked about why high and low-functioning aren't good labels to use. autism itself does not influence the person's intelligence. however, autistic people can have learning disabilities, leading to a lower IQ. 5. "most people will grow out of autism." autistic children grow up to be autistic adults. we were born this way, our brain didn't develop neurotypically and puberty didn't make it neurotypical. we may just have learned to deal with our symptoms differently than as children, and many of us are masking their symptoms in order o be seen as neurotypical. 📸: @sloehden #autismawareness #autismawarenessweek #autismacceptance #autism #autistic #actuallyautistic #neurodivergent #neurodiversity #neurodiverse #aspergers #aspergerssyndrome #autismspectrum #autismspectrumdisorder #aspie #autie #autisticadult #autisticadults #autismisbeautiful #lgbt #queer #trans #nonbinary #genderqueer #bisexual #enby #gay #folkslikeus

In our Aerobics class, students focus on circuit exercises that get their heart rate up, but also are challenging to them. Every class is a little different, however, we focus on the same several exercises throughout the week in order to gain strength, and to better perfect each exercise!⁣ ⁣ We always give a modified and advanced version of every move to accommodate to each students ability. However, we encourage the students to challenge themselves!

I missed #autismawarenessday yesterday because I was having a bit of a crap day 🤷‍♀️ These things happen. Still tired and in need of the weekend so I'll keep it short(ish). Since Rex's diagnosis I'd always thought the colour to show your support for autism awareness was blue. Turns out that's because an organisation called Autism Speaks started it. I've seen a little of Autism Speak's ideas and frankly they turn my stomach. They suggest autistic people are an infliction, a burden on their families and in need of a cure. If you're interested in learning more @g.e.a.r_insta has a post with details about Autism Speaks. . . If you want to know more about autism in general I'd suggest listening to autistic adults not organisations run by neuro typical people who profess to speak on autistics behalf. They don't need it, they can and do speak for themselves. People just need to listen to them. . This is true for parents with autistic children too. Yes it's useful to follow other parents but do try listening to autistic adults too. I've learnt SO much about Rex from adults experiences. They were autistic kids once only now can talk about things with the benefit of hindsight and more life experience. That can be an invaluable insight for a neuro-typical parent trying to understand their child! . So follow the #actuallyautistic and #redinstead and check out people like @autisticnotweird @autistic.barbie @g.e.a.r_insta @autistically_autistic @autisticandunapologetic . #respect #listen #accept #itshouldbeobvious

It’s World Autism Awareness Month. Many kids with autism never feel like they fit in or are included and many are bullied. Let’s educate our kids about autism. Teach a generation what it means to be kind and compassionate. Educate them on ways kids with autism react in different situations and give them the tools to help their friend or classmate with autism. For more info on autism, check out ‘Nathan’s Autism Spectrum Superpowers” available on amazon. #repost pic from @funandsensory

Please give me something to smile about!! The start I've had to 2020 has been the worst start to year that I can ever remember having, and now with Covid-19 I'm going to be spending my birthday next week stuck in my tiny flat on my own :-( For my birthday this year, I'm asking for donations to Action for Asperger's. They are relevent with it being autism awareness month and they are the hardest working charity with the founder working up to 15 hour days, 7 days a week completely voluntarily. The charity doesn't receive big grants or donations so any money raised is vital to them. All donations, big or small, goes to allowing trhe charity to continue to do the amazing work it does supporting those living with and those living alongside autism and Asperger's syndrome. #autism #autismawareness #aspergers #aspergerssyndrome #charity #fundraiser #fundraising #donate #getinvolved #pleasehelp #pleaseshare https://www.facebook.com/donate/621117078468979/?fundraiser_source=external_url

This is not your typical program or it might be better for me to say, "this is not your neurotypical program".⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you're looking for answers and interested in truly creating a change in your or your loved one's life then let's have a conversation.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Individuation is when we begin to discover who we are. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Jean Piaget (1896-1980) was a Swiss developmental psychologist that looked at cognitive development His theory deals with the nature of knowledge itself and how humans gradually come to acquire and use it., His theory is mainly known as a Developmental Stage Theory.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ He spoke of an early stage of development called Individuation that occurs approximately at age 2-3 and this is where we gain our identity of self separate from others and things around us.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We now know that individuals with learning differences tend to not go through this stage, partially experience it or experience something different during this stage of development.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This difference changes their patterns of learning from life experiences.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We recognize these differences and now can teach these ideas that are learned from life experiences. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Who am I is an important part of that education?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When we create that idea and explore who we are it is important to also take a look at the energy of being me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What is my energy like and how is it different or alike to others around me?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Asking basic questions and moving into an exploration of who I am as myself and then in comparison to others around me. is one of the first lessons involved in this process. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #autismlove #autismrocks #autismfamily #autismlovers #autismspeaks #autismmom #autismawareness #adhdwife #autismwife #adhdproblems #adhdbrain #autismmemes #adhdmemes #specialneedsfamily #specialneedsmom #specialneedswife #autismsupport #autismspectrum #aspergers #aspergerssyndrome #aspergersawareness #mompreneur #momlife #wifelife #wife #godlywife #engineerproblems #engineers #engineermemes

Thanks for sharing this with me Tim @focus_on_salisbury - I would have posted it yesterday if I hadn't been asleep (there's a fair amount of chronic fatigue mixed in with the autism here) Reposted from @theresascovil April 2nd is Autism Awareness Day. People are aware of autism now, some of them even accept it, but how many actually appreciate it? So many people see autism appreciation as “this science/acting/musical genius has added so much to society! We must appreciate them!” Okay, but what about those of us whose talents aren't as easily seen, or marketable? Those who aren't in the spotlight? We should appreciate the autistic people we know in our day to day life. Every autistic person is awesome, and it's not in spite of our autism, but because of our autism. It's because I'm autistic that I am who I am. If someone appreciates me I would want them to also appreciate my autism because it's part of what makes me me. To reach autism appreciation it's going to be a fight. We're going to have to keep climbing. There are so many who want to drag us down. They see us as different and in need of fixing. They see having an autistic child as something to be mourned instead of celebrated. We need to celebrate. We need to drown out their cries of sadness with our cheers of joy. We are autistic, and we will never stop climbing! #aspierations #aspergers #aspergerssyndrome #aspie #actuallyautistic #autism #autistic #autismawareness #autismawarenessmonth #autismacceptance #autismacceptancemonth #autismappreciation #autismappreciationmonth #autismselfadvocacy #autismadvocacy #autismadvocate - #regrann

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), are a group of highly heterogeneous disorders characterized by repetitive behaviors, impaired social interactions and a wide spectrum of neurodevelopmental and physical comorbidities. While the overall prevalence of ASD is estimated at 1 in 68 children, this may not represent an increase in incidence as much as it represents a widening of the scope of disorders that fit under the ASD umbrella in an era of improving clinical ascertainment.⠀ ASD has a major heritable component, with siblings of ASD patients usually having a risk which is ten-fold higher than population average for developing ASD themselves. Intensive and early treatment can make a big difference in the lives of many children affected by autism spectrum disorders, therefore we encourage physicians to utilize Whole Exome Sequencing (WES), a cost-effective and highly accurate genetic test that could play a vital role in detecting the genetic factors associated with these neurodevelopmental disorders. In about 10-15 % of ASD patients, a causative mutation will help physicians understand what brain changes underlie Autism Spectrum Disorder, which in turn, empowers them to consider new and suitable treatment approaches. Furthermore, WES allows the identification of genes underlying more complex syndromes shared with ASD hence enabling patients to be stratified more precisely based on their genetic abnormality rather than phenotypic variability.SFor more information about our services, please call: +971 4 344 3222 or e-mail us at: [email protected]#viafet #autism #autismawareness #autismacceptance #autismlove #autismfamily #autismparent #specialneedsfamily #autismrocks #autistickids #adhd #asd #autismspectrum #ilovesomeonewithautism #autismlife #livingwithautism #autismadvocate #aspergers #autismparenting #autismparents #autismmom #autismdad #autismsupport #aspergerssyndrome #ourautismjourney #motheringautism #autismstrong #autistictoddler #worldautismawarenessday #worldautismday
