Capturing Light from Distant Planets The high-contrast, high-resolution imaging needed to search for life outside our solar system involves meeting the seemingly contradictory requirements of gathering light from the planet while blocking light from the star. Collecting and analyzing starlight that reflects off the planet’s surface requires a mirror large enough to detect the extremely faint illumination of a small, distant planet, along with a coronagraph designed precisely enough to block 99.99999999 percent of the otherwise overwhelming light from the star—without also blocking the planet. A mirror large enough for the job needs to be segmented to fold up and fit inside a launch vehicle. This makes the problem of blocking starlight more challenging. While the basic component of a coronagraph is very simple in concept—an opaque disk that prevents light from reaching the detectors—the full assembly is actually quite complicated, because light is diffracted and distorted by different components of the telescope. The more complex the mirror, the more difficult it is to cleanly block the starlight. Mysterious fast radio bursts have been used to unlock another strange aspect of the universe: the case of the "missing matter." Here's how: Fast radio bursts, called FRBs, are powerful millisecond bursts of radio waves that have been known to occur in distant galaxies and travel across the universe to reach Earth. Astronomers have yet to determine what causes these fast radio bursts, which are unpredictable but can be spotted and traced back to their origin using sensitive telescopes. But they were able to use six of them to detect all of the missing "normal" matter in the interstellar space between galaxies and stars. . Normal matter, called baryonic matter in this study, is made of the protons and neutrons that comprise both humans and star stuff. But astronomers could only account for about half of it that should exist in the universe. #astronomy #astronomia #astronomical #astronomiamemes #astronomie #astronomía #astronomi #astronot #astronomers #astronomyphotography #astronomyfacts #astronomyy #astronomylover #astronomer #astrophotography #astrophysics #astrophoto #astrophytum #astrophotos #astrophotographer #astroprima #astrophile #cosmology #cosmologia #cosmos #physics #physicsmemes #science #universe #scientist

Streams of gas fall to their dooms, plunging into black holes, locked away from the universe forever. In their final moments, these gassy shreds send out one last flare of light, some of the brightest emissions in the universe. These death dives are too far away to be seen directly, but astronomers have devised a new technique for detecting their panicked cries for help. They're using the method to test our knowledge of gravity in the most extreme environments in the universe. In a new study, physicists looked at specific features of that light to figure out the closest you can get to a black hole without having to work hard to prevent disaster — a threshold called the innermost stable circular orbit or ISCO. The researchers found their method could work with more sensitive X-ray telescopes coming online. #astronomy #astronomia #astronomical #astronomiamemes #astronomie #astronomía #astronomi #astronomers #astronot #astronomyphotography #astronomyfacts #astronomyy #astronomylover #astronomer #astrophysics #astrophotography #astrophytum #astrophotos #astrophotographer #astrophile #cosmology #cosmologia #cosmologist #physics #physicsmemes #science #cosmos #photography #photooftheday #photographer

Time is a whole series of times when a process, action, or state is or is in progress. In this case, the time scale is the interval between two states / events, or it can be the length of time an event lasts. Time has many meanings from various sources such as understanding time in physics, understanding time in religion, understanding time in history, understanding time according to experts, in my opinion, in your opinion, and so on. Here it can be concluded that time is a silent instrument / witness of the initial journey of the universe formed or perhaps before the universe came to an end. - #time #universe #space #earth #astronomy #astrology #astrophile #nasa #nasawebb #science #astronomers #galaxy #blackhole #star #mystery #telescope #relative #theoryofrelativity #einstein #wormholes #time #backtopast #spacetime #lightspeed #cosmicstrings

In the last few years, the analysis of observational data has suggested the existence of water in the polar regions of the Moon. JAXA is working with ISRO to plan an international collaborative mission to obtain the data on the quantity and forms of the water resources present on the Moon, in order to determine the feasibility of utilizing such resources for sustainable space exploration activities in the future. Quantity: Our aim is to obtain actual data (ground truth data) regarding the quantity of water (H2O) from in-situ observations of areas where water is anticipated to exist, based on the available past observational data. Quality: We aim to understand the distribution, conditions, form and other parameters of the lunar water resources through in-situ observations in the polar regions of the Moon. Through this mission, we also seek to improve the technology needed to explore the surface of low-gravity celestial bodies in order to support future lunar activities. These advancements include technology for mobility, lunar night survival and mining excavation. Earth and Moon through Saturn's Rings What are those dots between Saturn's rings? Our Earth and Moon. Just over three years ago, because the Sun was temporarily blocked by the body of Saturn, the robotic Cassini spacecraft was able to look toward the inner Solar System. There, it spotted our Earth and Moon -- just pin-pricks of light lying about 1.4 billion kilometers distant. Toward the right of the featured image is Saturn's A ring, with the broad Encke Gap on the far right and the narrower Keeler Gap toward the center. On the far left is Saturn's continually changing F Ring. From this perspective, the light seen from Saturn's rings was scattered mostly forward , and so appeared backlit. After more than a decade of exploration and discovery, the Cassini spacecraft ran low on fuel in 2017 and was directed to enter Saturn's atmosphere, where it surely melted. Mars is among the top candidates that might be hiding it's own variety of life. There are equal chances that the Martian life would be distant relative of life on Earth. This planet hasn't changed much since billions of years. Our mighty rovers and orbiters have made some interesting discoveries that have made us bet more on the Red planet. It seems to have had all the important ingredients required to cook up life like water, organic chemicals and source of energy. This particular discovery is another point to remind us that we have been betting on the right horse in this race to find life beyond Earth. A research team including research scientist Atsuko Kobayashi from the Earth-Life Science Institute (ELSI) at Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan and research scientist Mizuho Koike from the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science at Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, have found nitrogen-bearing organic material in carbonate minerals in a Martian meteorite. This organic material has most likely been preserved for 4 billion years since Mars' Noachian age. Because carbonate minerals typically precipitate from the groundwater, this finding suggests a wet and organic-rich early Mars, which could have been habitable and favourable for life to start. - As reported in Sciencedaily Source: Mizuho Koike, Ryoichi Nakada, Iori Kajitani, Tomohiro Usui, Yusuke Tamenori, Haruna Sugahara, Atsuko Kobayashi. In-situ preservation of nitrogen-bearing organics in Noachian Martian carbonates. Nature Communications, 2020; 11 (1) DOI: 10.1038/s41467-020-15931-4

Would you like to be there to see this?⠀ ⠀ 👤Follow 👉@universewheel for more ❤️ This is what the night sky might look like if Andromeda galaxy were brighter 🌌⠀ ⠀⠀ At 140,000 light years across, the Andromeda galaxy is 40% bigger than our Milky Way.⠀ ⠀⠀ Created by Tom Buckley-Houston, the composite image shows the andromeda galaxy’s actual size in the night sky with a huge boost in brightness.⠀ ⠀⠀ Despite taking up so much “real estate” in the sky, andromeda is way too dim to be seen without the help of long exposure photography. Buckley-Houston explains:⠀ ⠀⠀ “The starlight from andromeda is 2.5 million light years away and so appears extremely dimly to us on earth. In order to make it appear bright like this we have to use very long exposures, minutes, hours, maybe days even to capture enough light. But when we do that we also capture all the light from things that are nearer. If you do that on a moonlit night the sky would literally be white and you wouldn’t be able to pick out any objects in the sky because of the bright white of the sky.”

HELSINKI — China is gearing up to launch its Tianwen-1 Mars mission following the delivery of a Long March 5 launch vehicle to Wenchang launch center. The rocket components arrived at Wenchang May 24 following delivery to Hainan island via Yuanwang 21 and 22 cargo ships. The spacecraft arrived at the launch center April 10, after air delivery to Haikou airport. Space officials at China’s ongoing annual political sessions in Beijing confirmed launch of the combined orbiter and rover mission for July. The specific launch date was not announced. Previous Long March 5 launch campaigns have taken two months, meaning launch can be expected late July. The launch window is likely similar to the July 17 – Aug. 5 window for NASA’s Perseverance rover. A successful landing would make China only the second country to land and operate a spacecraft on Mars after the United States. The biggest challenge is the ‘seven minutes of terror’, said Bao Weimin, chief of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) science and technology commission, at the political sessions. The phrase is borrowed from NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory engineers to describe the entry, descent and landing (EDL) process. #chinaspaceprogram #mars #china #chinesefood #chinatown #chinese #astronomy #astronomical #astronomia #astronomiamemes #astronomie #astronomía #astronomi #astronomers #astronot #astronomyphotography #astronomyfacts #astronomylover #astronomyy #astronomer #astrophotography #astrophoto #astrophysics #astrophytum #astrophotographer #astrophotos #astroprima #astrophile #cosmology #cosmologia

An instrument called SHERLOC will, with the help of its partner WATSON, hunt for signs of ancient life by detecting organic molecules and minerals. Mars is a long way from 221B Baker Street, but one of fiction's best-known detectives will be represented on the Red Planet after NASA's Perseverance rover touches down on Feb. 18, 2021. SHERLOC, an instrument on the end of the rover's robotic arm, will hunt for sand-grain-sized clues in Martian rocks while working in tandem with WATSON, a camera that will take close-up pictures of rock textures. Together, they will study rock surfaces, mapping out the presence of certain minerals and organic molecules, which are the carbon-based building blocks of life on Earth. SHERLOC was built at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, which leads the Perseverance mission; WATSON was built at Malin Space Science Systems in San Diego. For the most promising rocks, the Perseverance team will command the rover to take half-inch-wide core samples, store and seal them in metal tubes, and deposit them on the surface of Mars so that a future mission can return them to Earth for more detailed study. SHERLOC will be working with six other instruments aboard Perseverance to give us a clearer understanding of Mars. It's even helping the effort to create spacesuits that will hold up in the Martian environment when humans set foot on the Red Planet. 'Vigorous' magnetic field oddity spotted over South Atlantic. The South Atlantic Anomaly is a section of Earth's magnetic field between Africa and South America. For decades at least, this region of the magnetic field has gotten weaker and weaker, part of a global trend. According to the European Space Agency (ESA), the global magnetic field has lost 9% of its strength over the past 200 years. The South Atlantic Anomaly seems to be a particular point of change. Now, satellites investigating the anomaly have detected an intensified weakening southwest of Africa, suggesting that the anomaly could split into two separate low points. This change wouldn't signal any imminent danger, but it might help reveal what's going on in the Earth's core to drive the changes, according to the ESA. The agency's satellites are gathering data on the electromagnetic field to answer this question. #astronomy #astronomia #astronomical #astronomiamemes #astronomie #astronomía #astronomi #astronomers #astronot #astronomyphotography #astronomyfacts #astronomylover #astronomyy #astronomer #astronomyday #astrophotography #astrophysics #astrophoto #astrophytum #astrophotos #astrophotographer #astrophile #astroprima #cosmology #cosmologist #cosmologia #physics #physicsmemes #science #scienceexperiments

30 Voices on 2030: The Future of Space Will the future of space be communal, commercial and contested? What will the space industry look like in 2030? We asked 30 global leaders within the sector to predict what will happen in the next 10 years. Space has been the subject of human interest and a quest for discovery for a long time. But what does its future – and our role in it – look like? We have our own thoughts. We believe that space will be communal, commercial and contested. People will return to the moon and set up a more permanent base. Space travel will be possible, with multiple providers enabling it. We will rely on connectivity from space to provide broadband and communications affordably to areas which have previously been off the grid. Countries will increasingly use space as a domain for armed services. And people will land on and explore Mars for the first time. But this is just one view – and there are many others. #astronomy #astronomia #astronomical #astronomiamemes #astronomie #astronomía #astronomi #astronomers #astronot #astronomyphotography #astronomyfacts #astronomylover #astronomer #astrophotography #astrophysics #astrophoto #astrophotos #astrophytum #astrophotographer #astrophile #cosmology #cosmologia #cosmologist #physics #physicsmemes #science #sciencefiction #sciencememes #astronautcandidate #crewdragon

Astronomers have found two objects that, added to a strange object discovered in 2018, constitute a new class of cosmic explosions. The new type of explosion shares some characteristics with supernova explosions of massive stars and with the explosions that generate gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), but still has distinctive differences from each. The saga began in June of 2018 when astronomers saw a cosmic blast with surprising characteristics and behavior. The object, dubbed AT2018cow (“The Cow”), drew worldwide attention from scientists and was studied extensively. While it shared some characteristics with supernova explosions, it differed in important aspects, particularly its unusual initial brightness and how rapidly it brightened and faded in just a few days. In the meantime, two additional blasts — one from 2016 and one from 2018 — also showed unusual characteristics and were being observed and analyzed. The two new explosions are called CSS161010 (short for CRTS CSS161010 J045834-081803), in a galaxy about 500 million light-years from Earth, and ZTF18abvkwla (“The Koala”), in a galaxy about 3.4 billion light-years distant. Both were discovered by automated sky surveys (Catalina Real-time Transient Survey, All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae, and Zwicky Transient Facility) using visible-light telescopes to scan large areas of sky nightly. @national.radio.astronomy #astronomy #astronomia #astronomical #astronomiamemes #astronomie #astronomía #astronomi #astronomers #astronot #astronomyphotography #astronomyfacts #astronomylover #astronomyy #astronomer #astrophotography #astrophysics #astrophoto #astrophytum #astrophotos #astrophotographer #astroprima #astrophile #cosmology #cosmologia #cosmologist #cosmos #physics #physicsmemes #science #universe

Artist's conception illustrates the phenomena that make up the new class of cosmic explosions called Fast Blue Optical Transients. Analysis of two cosmic explosions indicates to astronomers that the pair, along with a puzzling blast from 2018, constitute a new type of event, with similarities to some supernovae and gamma-ray bursts, but also with significant differences. I am not a brave man... I do not have the right stuff. Astronauts are really a cut above. . . .

*As of may 2020, no observation of Planet 9 had been announced* Planet 9 was initially proposed to explain the clustering of the orbits of trans Neptunian Objects and why its high inclinations orbits roughly perpendicular to the orbits of 8 known planets.
