I’m a bit late with my post but last Sunday I took part in the 3rd #athenameet in aid of local charity Circle. Really pleased with my lifts, 9 for 9 and all white lights . ⚪️⚪️⚪️✔️ Squat 80/85/90 Bench 55/57.5/60 Deadlift 120/125/130 . big thank you to @kim_elysium and all the @athena_personaltraining girls & guys for the support. I came 4th overall which I was so surprised at as all the girls absolutely smashed it with PBs for everyone. Also big thanks to the non Athena lifters who joined in, some super strong ladies who were hugely inspiring! Next stop, the @scottishpowerlifting push pull comp in August - the ideal comp for a poverty squater like me!

So finally getting round to posting after what was the best day! Had the chance to take part in the Athena Meet this weekend and honestly couldn't have had a better day surrounded by these strong amazing women!! Even got the chance to have some new PB's: Squat 90/ 95/ 100 kg Deadlift 115/ 120/ 127.5 kg Bench 47.5/ 50 kg Thank you so much to @kim_elysium @athena_personaltraining for bringing everyone together and creating a safe space for everyone to have fun! Gutted it is over but cant wait for the next one!! And for another bonus amazing what has been raised for circle charity! #athenaarmy #athenameet #powerlifting #strongwomen

So, I think I’ve officially returned back to earth from the insane adrenaline I experienced solidly for 4 hours yesterday. I struggled to control it at the start. Guess what, shaky legs does not equal a solid squat 😂🤦🏼‍♀️ I managed to eventually channel it properly into my deadlift, who will always be my friend. What a fucking tremendous day though. Literally, everybody was cheering each other on with such fierceness. Lifters of all backgrounds, levels and experience came together for a purpose: lift seriously heavy shit and give everyone a proper chalky slap on the back for smashing it, even when things didn’t go as well as they hoped. What a solid group of women you all are, and god does it make my life fuller. HUGE shoutout to Kim at @athena_personaltraining for building the powerful female-strong community to be proud of: #ATHENAARMY. . I didn’t quite get all the the numbers I hoped for (blasted nerves), but they’re a damn sight better than they were 5 months ago... JANUARY MEET Squat: 65kg Bench: N/A (Broke shoulder) Deadlift: 80kg . JUNE MEET Squat: 70kg (I’m still counting the 75kg for myself though. I am so incredibly proud of what #AthenaArmy is becoming, a day like this really captures what I have always intended it to be about: Community, Empowerment and Passion! ❤️ I would not have been able to make today happen without the incredible @elysiumedinburgh (the best gym in the world), Will from @scottishpowerlifting who pretty much ran the show together with @diziet100 on the table, the fellow referees Steve from @biostrong_training and @rauraidh_g2g_coaching , the amazing spotter & loader crew @ciaran_convey @hannahlburns @katlav83 , and last but not least the AMAZING HYPE GIRL @charmcitychick (who was also my human microphone today 😉) A big congrats to @mairi.scobie 🥇 - @smamella 🥈 - & @lauren_musclemermaid 🥉 who were the 3 winners of the day with the highest IPF point score! Athena meet was awesome. Such a great day seeing all the lovely folk again, eating doughnuts and lifting some heavyish weights. Plan from Coach Will @atsapproved was to aim for 9RPEs in prep for Classics next month and we managed this with some PRs along the way. Squat 110/117.5/125 (video) 5kg off comp PR and very easy here. Bench 50/55 PR (video) little back pain on the second attempt so didn't do a third. Deads 120/130/140 10kg PR (video) This gives me a 320 total (10kg PR), second place and my wee phat ass a 508ipf/300wilks. Over the moon with today's lifts and finally getting some deadlift progress. Massive thanks to @athena_personaltraining for such a great event at @elysiumedinburgh #sbd #powerlifter #powerliftingwomen #athenameet #athenaarmy #elysiumedinburgh #scottishpowerlifting #strongnotskinny #grrrl #liftlikeagrrrl #liftersofscotland #sisterofstrength #progress #determined

The happy feeling when you are back lifting after a week off for fun and travels. Always end up feeling so bl ah without my training and my routine so loved being back at it this morning, even if I was sandbagging it in as per coaches instructions. The power of reward...... coming back from a brief break from training Mike was struggling to hit his Pb from the blocks. A little taste of what’s to come for all of you at the Athena Meet ! 🙌🏻 - - Kristel started training with me late last year, already having a solid base of training but also the added disadvantage of a back injury which was a major set back for @kristelse , we built strength around the injury, we tweaked her technique on all of the lifts, and yesterday displayed the success of our training together. - Squat 85kg (+12.5kg PB) - Bench 47.5kg (+2.5kg PB) lifted 50kg but failed by hip lift- Deadlift 117.5kg (+17.5kg PB) - A nicely rounded 250kg total with a 32.5kg increase over 5 months (from the previous Athena Meet) Very proud. One to watch for the September Open! 🙌🏻🔥

Results! 📈👆🏻- . . A bit of a different post from me, let’s talk body composition 💁🏼‍♀️- Pretty happy with how the Hypertrophy focussed phase went, with an increase of 1cm on Thighs, Glutes, 0.5cm on Arms and an unintended decrease of -2cm around waist 🤷🏼‍♀️🧚🏻‍♀️✅ - . . I focussed on muscle and movement building for a period of 12 weeks. My results were ok, could have added a bit more size seeing as that was the plan, however life stresses get in the way of ‘optimal’ results sometimes. Optimal results by definition are the best possible result you can achieve in that particular situation, and in that case, I’m pretty pleased. - . . Powerlifters need to focus on building muscle as well as strength. Muscle = potential, so there is no reason why a good physique is not attainable when the primary end goal is still strength. However, in order to build you must also EAT. My calorie intake was on average 2800 daily, which should have/could have been higher for me to reach more of that ‘optimal’ muscle gain I was talking about before. (Sacrificing a super low body fat % for some shape and strength gains is more often that not a smarter/faster/safer way of going about it. And trust me, having a bit more shape and curves is way more satisfying than how skinny feels 😉💪🏻) #AthenaArmy @athena_personaltraining

💪🏻👸🏼How To : Do A Proper Pull-up! 👸🏼💪🏻 - If there’s one thing I can do well, it’s a pull up. It’s not being vain,and it’s not a coincidence either. I train pull ups often (sometimes even up to 4x a week in some programmed volume phases). I always tell my lifters: If there would only be ONE accessory lift that I would recommend for a strong Bench Press, it would be the pull-up! Why do pull-ups? 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷‍♀️ The pull up (when done correctly) engages all of the muscles of the upper, mid and low back in synchrony, which should result in a fully ‘locked in’ back that does not change throughout the lift. By that I mean, there should be no extra flexion at the top of the rep which is the most common fault. Another tip I give my lifters, is to only focus on 3/4 of the rep and try to stay tight there, when you reach past elbow level with your chest it’s a rep in my book. This stops the misconception that chest must hit the bar, or chin must literally scoop directly over the bar, which again will result in extra flexion and protraction at the top of the rep and loss of tension namely in the lats. Of course it would be great if we could all touch our chest to the bar in a fully locked position with ease, but it’s just not as simple as that! There are stages to learning a Pull-up and here are my ‘3 Steps to the perfect pull up’. - . 1️⃣ Step 1 - Starting position - You lift up the chest to create a diagonal angle from your sternum towards the bar. . 2️⃣ Step 2 - The Lock-in - You retract your scapula and pull your shoulders not just back, but also down. This is by far the HARDEST part to get right, but also the most crucial part to the correct pull. (Beginners Tip: If you find that even banded pulls are challenging to get right, practise hanging retractions and just focus on a clean ‘lock-in’.) - . 3️⃣ Step 3 - The Pull - When you’re chest is up, your back angle in the correct position, and you are well and truly locked in, you can start executing the pull. There are stages to learning a Pull-up and here are my ‘3 Steps to the perfect pull up’. - . 1️⃣ Step 1 - Starting position - You lift up the chest to create a diagonal angle from your sternum towards the bar. . 2️⃣ Step 2 - The Lock-in - You retract your scapula and pull your shoulders not just back, but also down. This is by far the HARDEST part to get right, but also the most crucial part to the correct pull. (Beginners Tip: If you find that even banded pulls are challenging to get right, practise hanging retractions and just focus on a clean ‘lock-in’.) - . 3️⃣ Step 3 - The Pull - When you’re chest is up, your back angle in the correct position, and you are well and truly locked in, you can start executing the pull. 💪🏻👸🏼How To : Do A Proper Pull-up! 👸🏼💪🏻 - If there’s one thing I can do well, it’s a pull up. It’s not being vain,and it’s not a coincidence either. I train pull ups often (sometimes even up to 4x a week in some programmed volume phases). I always tell my lifters: If there would only be ONE accessory lift that I would recommend for a strong Bench Press, it would be the pull-up! Why do pull-ups? 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷‍♀️ The pull up (when done correctly) engages all of the muscles of the upper, mid and low back in synchrony, which should result in a fully ‘locked in’ back that does not change throughout the lift. By that I mean, there should be no extra flexion at the top of the rep which is the most common fault. Another tip I give my lifters, is to only focus on 3/4 of the rep and try to stay tight there, when you reach past elbow level with your chest it’s a rep in my book. This stops the misconception that chest must hit the bar, or chin must literally scoop directly over the bar, which again will result in extra flexion and protraction at the top of the rep and loss of tension namely in the lats. Of course it would be great if we could all touch our chest to the bar in a fully locked position with ease, but it’s just not as simple as that! Balance ⚖️ - . . Was discussing this with @gracepersonaltraining last week whilst on holiday, about the stigma attached with perceived ‘fit people’ and them having the ‘perfect diet’. So first of all this begs the question; What is a perfect diet? Well, in my experience I have been at my healthiest when I allow myself the foods I LIKE as well as the foods I NEED. Many people believe that in order to have your ideal body composition you must eat lettuce leaves 🥬 tuna and dry white rice 24/7. NOT TRUE! If anything, the people that have found their individual balance based on their energy input and NEAT output, can of course have a treat when they want to. They simply take it into account and add it to their daily intake instead of writing the whole day off as a fail ❌ - . . Eat smarter, not more restricted. 🤷🏼‍♀️Why Do You Lift?🤷🏼‍♀️ A question I get asked sporadically, yet also a question I ask myself often in order to reinforce my purpose. I’m going to tell you exactly why I lift and what Powerlifting has done for me. I’m in fact SO passionate about it, I’ve made a career out of it. I hope this gives you all a small insight into what my training, my lifters and my business is all about. To me, training is the Ultimate form of Self Respect. It requires discipline, it requires hard work, it requires persistence yet patience, it’s like any relationship - but with yourself. Throughout my life I have had a tumultuous relationship with myself and that led me down some very dark paths. I allowed people to take my naivety and niceness for weakness, and I saw standing up for myself as a negative and scary trait. Little did I know that all of that was going to change. We all forget sometimes, that WE ARE IN CONTROL over our lives, our future, our bodies, and for the most part - our HEALTH! So what does training have to do with any of that? Let me explain. Training to me, is time for reflecting. It allows me to be in a state of mindfulness where I can view things calmly and clearly. Not always, may I add. Sometimes I need to release the anger first! (I know some of you can relate to this 😅😉) But most importantly, it instills the habit of consistency. If I am consistent, I am successful in whatever I choose to do. Consistency is the key to unlocking your potential, you simply fight the battle day to day, until you reach a milestone. That milestone then becomes your new starting point. Believe me when I say YOUR potential is endless. When that clicks? Anything is possible. And that’s what the barbell has taught me. The bar path, in all of the power-lifts, is the way you take control of the bar as oppose to letting the bar control you. You’ll see here in my first few reps the bar is very much up and down 👆🏻👇🏻 (which you want in a squat, not so much in the other 2 lifts, but thats another topic for another video 💁🏼‍♀️) but when you look at rep number 6 you’ll notice a slight deviation from the ‘line’ and see how much more of a struggle it was to lift the same weight? My point exactly, you want control over the bar, in order to make the lift as seamless and tight as possible. Strong foundations can be built on. @athena_personaltraining

👉🏻 Working on Your Weaknesses 👈🏻 - Always humbling, always a must. For years I would avoid delt work for the simple reason that it hurt, not in a good way. Having some hyper mobility in my shoulders makes me prone to impingements and it took me a while to realise that weaker more mobile areas need MORE stability. How do we build more stability? More muscle 💪🏻 - - So after this hypertrophy block I’m actually feeling strong, thick, and STABLE. Main focus has been delts and quads, and I’m definitely feeling the gains. Goes to show that #powerlifters NEED #hypertrophy especially in the more novice to intermediate stages of their lifting career - @athena_personaltraining #athenastrengthprogramming

🦋Who Do You Want To Be?🦋 - - Knowing who you want to be, is just as important as knowing who you are. But do you want to know the truth of the matter? Most people know neither. How can we become something when we have no idea where to even start? How can you attain something without a vision of the future? Finding out who you are, can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be. The key 🔑 is being honest. Be honest with yourself about your habits; What do you lack? What do you wish you could change? Or even more importantly; What do you know you NEED to change in order for you to progress in life? Because your habits are what make you who you are today. They are what you practise, they are the things that guide you through your current life, your behavioural pattern - YOU. Honesty can be scary, it can make you feel inadequate. This is why so many of us lie to ourselves in order to justify choices that hold us back. Here are some examples: ‘I can’t go to the gym, I have no time I work a full-time job’ ❌ ‘I can’t get up at 6am’❌ ‘I can’t apply for that promotion at work, I am nowhere near confident enough’❌ Can’t OR Wont?⛔️ Identifying and then breaking your current behavioural patterns, AKA your habits, will open you up to building new ones and replacing the old you. How would the ideal version of yourself (in your mind) react in those situations? How do you want to be perceived? Who do you want to become?
