I came to love the characters in Orphan Train soooo much that I hated putting it on the shelf 📚 when I finished reading it📚 BOOK REVIEW: Five stars! Couldn’t put Orphan Train down. I highly recommend that you add this book to your fall TBR list. In Christina Baker Kline’s Orphan Train, the stories of two women intertwine: Vivian—an orphaned Irish immigrant turned wealthy department store heiress; and Molly—a seventeen-year-old Goth, foster care rebel. Vivian – 1939: “And when I begin to wear makeup. I have a revelation. I’ve viewed my life until now as a series of unrelated adaptations, from Irish Niamh to American Dorothy to the reincarnated Vivian.” Molly – 2011: “So Molly talks. She tells Vivian about living in the trailer on Indian Island, the car crash that killed her father, her mother’s struggle with drugs.” The unlikely friendship unfolds when a chance meeting takes place. Molly is required to do community service for stealing and is assigned to help the now elderly Vivian in the clean-up of her cluttered attic. What they find in the boxes of old stuff, as rich and delightful as a lovely handmade quilt, is a lifetime of memories—and companionship. Revealing a forgotten chapter of American history, Kline draws on the similarities that these two women suffer as little girls. Resilient and up for the challenge, both look at their losses in a new light, making wonderful and unexpected changes. #bookreview #wonderfulbook #authorlife #booksofinstagram @bakerkline #writerlife

In his Ted Talk The Clues to a Great Story, Andrew Stanton says, "Make me care, please. Emotionally, intellectually, aesthetically. Just make me care." This is perhaps our greatest challenge as writers. How do we make the reader care what we have to say? In his book The Idea, Erik Bork echoes this idea when he says, "In my view, earning audience investment is the number one goal and challenge for every writer. 'Why should I care?' is the note that I most fear on anything I write—because it’s our most important objective and the hardest to achieve. Readers who 'don’t care' usually won’t say that to our faces (thank God), but unfortunately, that’s what they are most often feeling. And it makes them give up on a piece of writing. Isn’t that how we all are? We want to care, and if we don’t, we tune out. So, what makes us care? It’s seeing someone we feel a connection with battling a big problem and becoming emotionally invested in a certain outcome for them, so much so that it’s almost like it’s happening to us—and the problem looks nearly impossible to solve." Effectively this means we've got to get the audience attached to a character, give that character a goal with heavy emotional stakes, put the character up against a clock, and then make the character's journey grueling. Does your story have these elements? What in your story makes us care? Proof that I’m alive and writing ✍🏼 Me: Let’s write a sequel to your story about Josep in Middle Kingdom Egypt! Me: Sure! Me: Let’s make it a mere 64 chapters instead of 68! Me: yeah, waaay easier Me: And let’s add 6 point of view characters instead of 9 Me: Way to go there, kiddo! Me: ( rubbing hands) now let’s add facts pertinent to Middle Kingdom Egypt, Bible reference of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, some crocodiles, political intrigue, fight scenes, romance, an Egyptian court case and life in the Nile Delta climate...and make pacing and alternating POV’s make sense Me: ........😵🥴🤒 . . ⁣This week I have been piling unnecessary pressure on myself to get sh*t done, to the point where I’ve almost been making myself ill. What with the year fast coming to a close and the realisation that my manuscript is still unfinished it has most definitely been getting me down. So, do you know what I did? I looked through my book notes, put whats left to get down into manageable bite size chunks and all of a sudden this burden I’m carrying feels a little less heavy. ⠀ ⠀ I’ve figured I’ve got eight chapters left to write. Eight may seem like a lot but I’m pretty confident if I knuckle down it will be quicker than I think. (There’s me unwittingly piling on the pressure again) Fingers crossed 🤞!⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Who else gets in a tizzy when they fail their own deadlines, it can’t be just me surely?! ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #writingmemoir⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #writersofinstagram #writersofinst #writersofig #authorsofinstagram #igauthor #writergram #authorgram #YAwriter #nonfiction #writersofbookstagram #authorsrock #deadlines #deadline #fail #stress #stressrelief #pressure #underpressure #blogger ⠀ ⠀

Two years since It Had To Be You came out . Twenty-five-year-old Bea is a hopeless romantic with a hopeless love life – until now. New beau Dan ticks all the boxes: he’s good-looking, kind and thoughtful. The complete opposite of Bea’s ex, who once threw her out in the middle of the night when she was ill so she didn’t disrupt his sleep. So when her friends point out that she and Dan don’t have fireworks, Bea ignores them. Dan is the whole package. And yet Bea can’t stop comparing him to her best friend Henry… Because Dan doesn’t get Bea’s jokes. Or like books. Or make her laugh until she can’t breathe. Or become speechless when Bea puts on her favourite black dress for a night out… As time goes on, Bea can’t shift the feeling that something just isn’t right. On paper Dan is the perfect man. But in reality… Will Bea be brave enough to ask for more from life – and get the fireworks she deserves?

Just did this interview recently Reposted from @kinyattagraytheauthor (@get_regrann) - I recently did an interview with a digital magazine.... I had no idea beforehand that the male interviewer had recently lost his mom. Here’s an excerpt from the interview... 🙏 Interviewer: Being someone who recently lost his mother I know only to well the pain that comes with that type of loss. What advice would you give to young men and women who have lost their loved one and are in need of uplifting? Kinyatta: My sincerest condolences to you. And I want to offer you peace, love and light. The best piece of advice I have to offer is to try hard not to let the memories of your mom die with her. I recently learned that there are people who cannot talk about their loss because it is so painful. And then there are those like me, who have to talk about our loss because in doing so, it feels like our loved ones are still here with us. If you can continue to talk about your mom’s memory, commit to finding activities that would honor her legacy, advocate for organizations that were near and dear to your mom and stay connected with her friends that you know that she loved and trusted - you may find that doing these things will help you stay connected to your mom if that’s your desire. I also recently started a Facebook Group called Remembering Our Moms. It’s a safe place to share memories, quotes and maybe even pictures of your mom in a supportive environment with people who know how you feel because they have lost their mom too. My current read and needless to say I'm loving it! 👏👌 I've been very much infested in my writing for the last couple of weeks and have come across a realisation that I would like to share.☝️ It doesn't matter what you create, everyone needs silence and time off to themselves. 💭 Even the most extroverted individual needs time off and that is not a bad thing. It doesn't mean we hate our family or friends, it means we need time to ourselves to get our creative juices flowing in order to create content. 💎 I think that's a beautiful thing especially for us creative beings as we begin to see the beauty in the little things.🤔☺️ We are more aware of our surroundings and that does great things to our creative brains. 😀 #authorgram #youngwriter #thewriteclub #writersofinstagram #amwriting #writersnotebook #writersjournal #authorsofinstagram #writer #writing #writingcommunity #writingabook #writinganovel #bookstagram #writinginspiration #writers #writerscommunity #writerslife #writersociety #writersofinsta #authorlife #authorsofinsta #writingfiction #books #reading
