Part 3️⃣ of our collaborative neck pain series will focus on how to address that stubborn, always consistent neck pain/tightness ——— Check back to part 1️⃣ from @manaperformancetherapy and part 2️⃣ from @drjasonpark of @coolheartperformance if you missed them earlier this week. It’ll tie together the entire series! ——— The primary way to “fix” an issue like this is to strengthen your scapulae and improve mobility at the same time. We’ve already established that stretching doesn’t solve this issue, so let’s take a look at how you can target often limited areas to take your neck to the next level 💪🏼 ——— 💥 Serratus Wall Walks: apply pressure into the foam roller and slide the arms towards the ceiling. At the top, shrug the shoulders and hold for 2/3 seconds while keeping your arms straight. Repeat 2x12 💥 Serratus Punches: Working the serratus at a mid range angle, focus on pushing your shoulder blades apart and reaching forward with an upward angle. This will hit both movements the serratus is responsible for. Repeat 2x12 💥 Chin Tucks: Lastly well look to strengthen the deep neck flexors, which provide deep stability for the cervical spine. Roll a towel under your neck, nod your head “yes”, and create a double chin without lifting your head off the table. Hold for 5-10 seconds to begin, build up to 30-45 seconds. Do a total hold time of 2 minutes ——— We hope you got a lot out of this collaborative series. @russdpt and @drjasonpark are two of the best PTs in the biz. Ik this picture isn’t about my animals but I thought I’ld about my past and something about me so my followers get to know about it a bit more. So basically June 2017 I got “diagnosed” with scoliosis. I had my surgery on the 16th April 2018 at AlderHey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. My spine was at a 70 degree angle and was really painful and I had a bad posture with my shoulders wonky. Once my surgery was done I was in so much pain but after a week I improved and got better and was let out of hospital. 🔎Here's an exerpt from my blog on vanessabhealth.com to explain a bit on back pain... Back pain is one of the most commonly talked about body issues that most people will experience sooner or later. It’s inevitable with the way our lifestyles are these days and the amount of sitting that generally takes place every day. In fact, worldwide it’s responsible for more global disability than any any other ailment. There are varying degrees and a huge amount of reasons for back pain of course, but with the way lifestyle factors have brought us to be more sedentary than ever, it’s no wonder it’s one of the modern day health chrises. Years back there was more demand for physical activity, without even needing to exercise. A friend mentioned to me that children she knew didn’t know what a car window handle did (the one you have to wind down with no button to push!) How things have changed. If your back pain is ‘mechanical’ in its cause it can mean: overuse of the spine, poor posture, herniated disc or an injury. This is the majority of cases. The other small percentage (around 10 to 15 percent) are medical causes like nerve damage from diabetes or fibromyalgia or other underlying health conditions. Mechanical pain is caused by problems of the ligaments, bones, joints, muscles and nerves and the position of your spine. Alignment of your spine is super important as a essential to preventing and treating this, although many people do not have a correctly aligned spine due to poor posture. The good news is most mechanical pain will heal and improve over time with correct exercise and sometimes medications. Medical pain may not improve with activity or rest and can be related to certain organs causing the pain from an illness, for example. This is where medical intervention is vital, to identify the source of the pain and if there is any underlying illness or conditions. So much of what feels wrong or imbalanced within our bodies is related to weak cores, including back pain. So keep up your core strength and flexibility routines which are just as important as cardio etc! 📲 msg questions below 💛

Scoliosis is a broad term, but most often refers to a sideways bend in the spine. 10% of people are said to have scoliosis, which means they have a 10 degree (or more) sideways curve in their spine, while only 2% of people have a perfectly straight spine. Many celebrities with scoliosis use Pilates as part of their back pain reduction. Usain Bolt, Liza Minnelli and Sarah Michelle Gellar are all reported to have a scoliosis diagnosis, and in the photos below, a scoliotic curve can clearly be seen on Sarah Michelle Gellar (aka Buffy the Vampire Slayer). If you have a scoliosis diagnosis, rest assured that instructors like myself are learning more, educating ourselves, and working with you to achieve the best result we can for you. I’ve ordered my copy of the scolio-pilates manual, and some scoliosis wedges from the US to better help a couple of my clients.

I remember thinking my injury was the end of the world. That I would never work out the same way I had before. . It’s true in many ways. But false as well. I listened to coach during a drop in, though I knew he was advising me of something I was uncomfortable with. . I couldn’t work out for a year. I missed days of university classes, because I couldn’t sit down and I couldn’t wear a backpack. I was miserable. . Flash forward three years later and no, I don’t lift the same. I lift better. I move more. And I move with intention. I had “nice” form, but that stopped being good enough. It was the end of my former world of fitness, but I jumped back in and am in that world with a completely new perspective. One of humility and absolute non-negotiable commitment to virtuosity and form. . From being unable to demo during coaching to no injuries in years, I’d say it worked. It’s why I’m big on fundamentals and appropriate scales. It’s why I say to athletes that it’s better to finish last than finish first with compromises in the integrity of your movements. . Our mobility is greatly determined by how hydrated we keep our fascia. Think of fascia like a sponge, if it dries out it becomes brittle, but hydrated it can bend and bounce. Fascia is 70% water and it loves slow, steady, melting pressure. Chronic issues don’t just happen overnight, they take years or even a lifetime to develop. Therefore, chronic issues need to take a long term approach to health & healing. While 1 massage may help you feel better, it’s not a long term fix. Regular massage treatments, time & self-responsibility are the keys here. You will require 2 or more appointments in quick succession (ie weekly or fortnightly) to have your pain &/or discomfort of the condition resolved. Once you are feeling better, monthly maintenance plans are the recommended minimum for maintaining the health of your muscles & tissues. If you start spacing the massages too far apart, then your muscles have time to revert back to their old patterns. If you wait too long, you’ll have to start all over again to restore their elasticity & flexibility.
