Finally at RW Cephei, A Super Giant Star around 3.5k lightyears away from home. I've added a standard red dwarf star (0.5 solar masses of our star) in the image for perspective. The smaller star I about 168 light seconds away (168 x 186282.397 miles) and RW Cephei is about 400 light seconds away (400 x 186282.397 miles) It's absolutely huge. 🌟 🌌 🚀 #EliteDangerous #stargazing #astronomy #cosmos #instagood #bestoftheday #planets #solarsystem #milkyway #galaxy #gaming #satellite #lunar #moonlight #neutronstar #space #spacesim #orionNebula #barnardsloop #earth #colonia #elitedangeroushorizons

We're back with another OPT TEAM TAKEOVER! ⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ Today Antoine & Dalia Grelin also known as Galactic Hunter take us behind the scenes into what gear they use in their images like this stunning capture of Barnard's Loop and more in our Instagram story.⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ "This image took us 4 different nights. We wasted one night imaging at f/1.8 (which introduced so much coma all over the edges of the frame) so every shot went to the trash. We learned our lesson and went back to image at f/4 instead. This worked fine but clouds rolled in as soon as we were ready to image, forcing us to go home.⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ On the third night, we finally were able to image Barnard’s Loop properly at f/4. Everything looked nice but because our camera is unmodified, it wasn’t that impressive. After thinking about it for a while, we decided to buy an Hydrogen Alpha filter from OPT just so that we could get a better image. We once again went back to the desert and imaged it in Ha.⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ It was challenging for several reasons:⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ - We were exhausted of imaging the same target again and again especially when the weather didn’t want to cooperate.⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ - It was our first time using a filter for astrophotography.⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ - We were not used to doing wide field astrophotography.⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ - We were filming Episode 8 of Galactic Hunter at the same time, which added some stress to the whole process as we had to manage the camera and be entertaining while also trying to get a beautiful image.⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ -We had to learn how to combine Ha with RGB and there was almost no tutorial online (we then made our own!)"⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ 📷: @galactic.hunter⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ #deepskyastrophotography #deepskyobject⠀⁣ #natgeospace #astrophoto #spacephotography #spacephotos #nebulas #keeplookingup #science #solarsystem #spacespot #astrophotographer #takeovertuesday #barnardsloop #barnardsloop #galactichunter #astronomy #space #⠀⁣

The constellation Orion as the camera sees it. Betelgeuse is the red/yellowish star to the top left. It became dimmer in October 2019 prompting the possibility that it’s about to go supernova. Barnard’s Loop (the red wispy cloud on the left) is part of the Orion Molecular Cloud. A massive area of molecular hydrogen and dust. Both are needed for stars to form. In the centre are the three recognisable stars of Orion’s Belt. Behind the left most star is the flame and horse head nebulas. Going below the belt is the ‘Orion’s sword’. A nebula (seen with the naked eye) of newly formed stars blistering out from the molecular cloud. The witches head nebula (it’s an upside down head) is to the lower right. A reflection nebula, reflecting blue light from the nearby blue star Rigel. The top right star is Bellatrix (Lestrange - any Harry Potter fans). Bottom left star is Saiph. As In stay safe. . . Messier 78 and Barnards loop. M78 is a reflection nebula in the constellation Orion and lies about 1350 light years away. Barnards loop is a close by emission nebula of hydrogen gas. Both are part of the Orion molecular cloud complex which includes favorites like the Horsehead and Orion Nebula. This was a difficult target and is only based on 15x10 minute exposures with a dual narrowband filter. I tried to add data to this on two other nights. On one night realized using a broadband filter with a moon out really washed out Barnards loop. On the second night my reducer was not completely in place correctly which meant I couldn’t stack the images from the first night. I definitely learned some lessons on this one. So this is the image for now, definitely plan for another attempt in the fall when this area is more visible again. Taken with ES 102ED, 0.8 reducer f5.6. Zwo ASI071MCPro. 15 x 600s with darks, flats and bias. Gain-200. Barnard’s Loop and Orion Region — It’s been a while since I’ve posted last. I decided to edit some data that I have captured to test this region a while ago while sitting at home. We wanted to go up to the mountains to a lakeshore located on Sandras Mountain, but the road was closed due to heavy snow. We just parked on the road, I wasn’t pleased by the location for landscape astrophotography, so I just pulled out my Skytracker, got my 50mm lens and captured the Orion region by the time we were waiting there. There were just a small amount of files (around 30mins) to process, yet there is a lot of data captured with an unmodified DSLR. I wonder how much more data could be obtained by spending more time on the field. Not the greatest result I could get — Nikon D610 Nikon 50mm f/1.8G 18x120” f/2.8 ISO 1600 — #astrophotography #milkyway #milkywaychasers #barnardsloop #hunter #sandras #ağlayaylası #horseheadnebula #nofilter #astrography_ #constellations #turkey #nightsky #igworldclub_astrophotography #night_shooterz #natgeospace #fantastic_universe #timelessuniverse #universetoday #nightsky #koycegiz #longexposure_shots #artofvisuals #ig_astrophotography #orion #nebula #msm #skytracker #fatalframes #ps_starry #youresa

Reprocess time: Still cooking in the Saucepan... After and ⬅️ before. A month or two of practice with Pixinsight, and about three attempts at reprocessing (from scratch!) this week, and this is possibly the best I'm able to do with 15 windy 180 second subs. #M78, #Horsehead and #Flame #nebulae all came out stunning considering this is at 150mm in a 77mm objective. Managed to control exposure on M42 a little more as well. Deep Sky Stacker told me there are more than 60,000 stars in this image, so I morphed the smaller ones out. There's so much to see in #Orion, I even found a few tiny blobs of nebulosity around the place that I've never seen before. #barnardsloop #runningmannebula #m42 #horseheadnebula #flamenebula #skywatcheraustralia #nikonaustralia #nikon #sigmaphotoaustralia #astrophotography #astro_photography #astrophotographer #astro #astronomy #highpointscientific #twincityfeature #pixinsight #opteam

Just as the waves are continuous with the ocean, your body is continuous with the total energy system of the cosmos Tried to capture barnards loop but there was too much light pollution/no filter and not enough time last night. I was at least able to see orion and most of the constellation so I was in the right area.

Hope Visualized 👀 This is my favorite area of space. Orion was the first constellation I learned because it is so easy to recognize. Go out tonight and take a look. He will be high in the southern sky just after sunset. One look and there is no denying his majesty. You can even catch a hint of the Great Nebula (M42) with averted vision if you are fortunate enough to be under relatively dark skies. . Accordingly, I’ve have a strong desire to image him. Seems simple enough, yet this task has been proving to be much easier said than done; in particular, his bright stars have been a challenge to my equipment. . But no longer! I found a winning combination last night. It wasn’t the fast 50mm. This time I tried my Dad’s old Nikon 25-50mm f/4 zoom, and it (finally!) produced a clean image of Orion! No haloes, no diffraction. . So, you may ask, if Orion is your favorite, why did you cut his head off? . The moon. It was quite bright and almost right on top of Orion. It was glaring off the lens and I don’t have a hood for it. I’m not sure a hood would even have helped it was so close by. This was the angle that worked, but you can still see a strong gradient coming from the top left where it was. There were also high clouds for the moonlight to reflect off. . Thus, the hope. The conditions were the only thing holding this imaging session back. Conditions change, and when they do I’ll be back out there with this setup to capture the photo I’ve been wanting - complete with Orion’s head! . My first try of the Orion region with my newly astro-modified Canon 6D. This is a stack of a meager 12 exposures plus one dark frame, done through my Sigma f1.4 20mm and through my new Astronomik CLS clip-filter. Each exposure was 60s at f1.6, ISO3200. I got strong coma with the whide angle plus the large aperture and the filter, but the center of the frames, with Orion in it, was usable, I think, at least for a very first try. 😅 The camera is now about five times more sensitive at the red wavelength (656nm) of the H alpha emission line of those clouds, which are usually hiding from our human eyes in plain sight: our eyes are only under the very best conditions sensitive enough to guess those large structures around orion. For those 60s exposures I used my star adventurer for tracking. As is usual in my area, light pollution was terrible, but I'm happy. At the bottom you can see the great arc of Barnard's Loop, semi-encircling the Orion Nebula, Orion's sword and his belt, made of the stars Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka. Right next to the belt is the famous cloud complex that hides the (here too tiny) Horsehead Nebula. On top of Orion is the round shape of the Anglefish Nebula Lambda Orionis and the little nebula on the left side of the frame is the Rosette Nebula. Almost in the center of the picture, a little bit up, is the currently drastically dimmed Beteigeuze. The almost foggy, white region to the left is the beginning of the bright part of the milky way. The foggy part at the bottom is due to us Germans not turning off our lights in our cities, even in the middle of the night... #nightphotography #astronomy #orion #barnardsloop #astromodified #beteigeuze #cls #canon6d #lambdaorionis #halpha #stacking #longexposure #stars #sterne #betelgeuse #germansky #ostalb #naturespectacle #astrophotography #skyscape #starscape #starrysky #night_excl #fantasticuniverse #specialshots

Due to the recent British storms and constant gales I haven’t been able to do any nightscaping. However a clear moonless night became recently available and I decided to get some deep sky astrophotography practice in before I get my next astrophotography lens. I used my current Canon zoom lens which isn’t really built for astrophotography, but gave it a go anyway. This is the most amount of data I’ve ever collected for one stacked image, 1 hour and 20 minutes to be exact! I must say my Star Adventurer star tracker performed exceptionally well in the wind. http://www.facebook.com/M.Wilson_Astrophotography www.instagram.com/M.Wilson_Astrophotography Canon 6D Astro mod Canon 24-105 mm at 105mm ISO 3600 F/5.6 55x90 second tracked light exposures and 20x90 second dark exposures Taken on 17/02/2020 Stacked in Sequator, edited in Lightroom/Photoshop. #milkyway #milkywayphotograhpy #milkywaychasers #nightphotography #astrophotography #nightscape #longexposure #stars #nightsky #night #starscape #starrynight #starphotography #astrography #astrophoto #universetoday #natgeospace #nightscaper #milkywayshooters #igworldmilkyway #ig_astrophotography #igworldclub_astrophotography #mgxpics #acquariumofstars #orion #orionnebula #horseheadnebula #runningmannebula #barnardsloop

Here's my first ever attempt at astrophotography (Death Valley National Park, December 2017). Having seen the Milky Way for the first time earlier that year, I was inspired to pursue astrophotography. I didn't know that there is such a thing as the "Milky Way season". Realized that after waiting a couple of hours (thanks Google)! I focused on the next most interesting thing that was visible in the sky i.e., the Orion Constellation. I set the camera up on the hood of my car (forgot my tripod 🤦🏽‍♂️) and took some long exposure shots at the biggest aperture setting. Along with a cacophony of noise, coma and chromatic aberration, I captured Orion's belt and a faint outline of the Barnard's loop. Barnard's loop is an emission nebula that is thought to be a remnant of a supernova (the reddish haze in the middle around Orion's belt). Now, why am I revisiting this photo? It is because of the bright star in the center of the image i.e., Betelgeuse! Betelgeuse is a red supergiant star. Supergiant is no misnomer... if it were located at the same location as our sun, the surface of Betelgeuse would reach Jupiter! Betelgeuse is the twelfth brightest object visible to the naked eye in the night sky. Over the past year a consistent pattern of dimming has been observed in Betelgeuse. There are indications of possible change in the shape of the star. According to astronomers, this could indicate the beginning of the end of Betelgeuse. Meaning the star could explode into a supernova! If it were to happen, the supernova would be visible to the naked eye! Recently I have been gazing expectantly in the direction of Orion hoping to see a massive bright spot. However, Betelgeuse could explode into a supernova in the next one hundred thousand years. Seriously, if it were to happen in my lifetime... I might just explode out of excitement! #thenightisdarkandfullofwonders #halftheparkisafterdark #deathvalley #nationalpark #nps #astrophotography #firstattempt #betelgeuse #astronomicalexplosion #supernova #maybe #hopefully #barnardsloop #orion #orionsbelt #national_park_photography #findyourpark #nationalparkobsessed #nationalparkgeek #idadarksky

IC 2177 is a region of nebulosity that lies along the border between the constellations Monoceros and Canis Major. It is a roughly circular H II region centered on the Be star HD 53367. This nebula was discovered by Welsh amateur astronomer Isaac Roberts and was described by him as "pretty bright, extremely large, irregularly round, very diffuse. The name Seagull Nebula is sometimes applied by amateur astronomers to this emission region, although it more properly includes the neighboring regions of star clusters, dust clouds and reflection nebulae. . . . ORION . . . Comparado con la foto anterior es que hice el triple de expocisión, con 4 veces el ISO aumentado, a 135mm (a diferencia que la anterior fue a 24) y sumando casi 200 fotos para reducir ruido (dark frames), salió esto. . . The Hunter rises Two astrophotographers capture Orion the Hunter as it rises. This 30-second exposure shows the brilliant constellation — with ruddy Betelgeuse appearing significantly brighter than it does currently — along with the Orion Nebula (M42) to the lower right of the Hunter’s Belt, the Rosette Nebula (NGC 2237) at bottom left, and the huge red partial circle known as Barnard’s Loop.
