Listen to Connor’s mom talk about their experience at MFNC. They traveled from New York to do a week ICON Intensive, he had 10/10 dizziness and 8/10 headaches, was falling over and bumping into walls. In three days we were able to take his dizziness to 2/10 and at one point he had no dizziness. PART 2 VIDEO: I've mentioned the brain damage that I've experienced in previous posts, but these videos show a little of what that means. I've had extensive brain damage from toxicity and Lyme that had formed masses in my brain. The masses are now gone but have left behind the damage that needs to heal. This terrible thing takes away my ability to be who I want to be and say what I want to say. It is so terrifying to say things and do things that I don't want to and it causes so much fear. Brain damage affects every piece of life- social ability, ability to think, ability to act, everything. We have seen so much improvement and there has been substantial healing in my brain. These episodes still occur at times, but this used to be how my brain was all the time. These huge improvements have come through priesthood blessings, a plant based diet, and natural treatments. I know that Christ knows the function of the brain and body perfectly and that he can heal anything through his power and natural remedies he has placed on this earth. I love my Savior and I know there are others out there who experience similar things. Heavenly Father loves all of his children and he guides all of us through any trial. . . . . . #braindamage #lyme #lymedisease #chronicillness #chronicpain #invisibleillness #infectiousdisease #neuropathways #basalganglia #plantbased #wholefoods #foodismedicine #naturaltreatment #naturopathicmedicine #naturopathicdoctor #chiropracter #miracles #blessings #braininfection #bacteria #parasites #forksoverknives #becauseofhim #helives #blessings #miraclesfromheaven #bestillandknow #bestillmysoul #glutenfree #realfood #braintrauma

This is a girl named Lillian who lives on my floor and she has recently been diagnosed with OCD. OCD which stands for obsessive-compulsive disorder is recognized by changes in basal ganglia and frontal cortex and linked to serotonin. Sometimes in extremely severe cases of this anxiety disorder a person might be recommended to have a restricted type of psychosurgery to treat their condition. #introneurobrown2018 #OCD #psychosurgery #basalganglia #frontalcortex #chapter16

We had a huge breakthrough yesterday!! After years and years of being led and guided, we were able to pinpoint the area of my brain that has experienced the most damage and we now can move forward with treatment to get me better once and for all!! 😭👏Through this sickness, more and more has been revealed to us at the exact time that we needed it through priesthood blessings, prayer, and heaven sent inspiration to the doctor I work with. It’s amazing to look back over the years and see everything that Heavenly Father placed in our path to get me to this point. So this PANDAS 101 is being offered as CEU for Social Workers is totally awesomesauce! 😍 And it’s being offered through Campbellsville University here in Kentucky! It’s for social workers, but it may be of interest to other health care professionals, teachers, and caregivers. I know Kelly Joplin-MSW, the developer of the program. And I know Christine Amabile-MSW/LCSW, collaborator for the program. A TON OF KUDOS to these Professionals & PANDAS Moms for making this info more available. The first step towards massive financial abundance, or any abundance, is to realize that what you were doing until this point isn't going to get you there. You need to do something different. . But how do you change? How do you reprogram? . By understanding your brain. Understanding how you came to be and how the brain operates to create your state is imperative to the journey of deprograming and reprograming. . Watch Dr Joe Dispenza with @tombilyeu. ABC’s 20/20 (@abc2020) will be airing an episode tonight dealing with PANDAS & its effects. I have been told that it’s not just a short segment...that it is the show. We shall see. The show Nightline will have coverage too. It is very heartening to see this exposure. There will be families that hear about PANDAS from this show & realize that is what has been happening to their child. Or a grandparent will see it and call the family. Or a friend. And it brings mixed feelings. Happy that the kids will be able to get help. Sad that there’s another kid dealing with PANDAS. ❤️ ~Sarah • #pandassucks #pandas #pans #brain #basalganglia #autoimmune #strep #pandasawareness #pandaspans #pansawareness #pandassucksbecause #pandasblog #abc2020 #pandasinthenews

What is the basal ganglia? The basal ganglia is a group of sub-cortical nuclei thought to be involved in motor control and learning. The nuclei comprising the basal ganglia include the caudate, putamen, globus pallidus, the subthalamic nucleus, and the substantia nigra. The caudate and putamen together form the striatum, while the globus pallidus and the putamen together form the lenticular nucleus. The striatum is the principal input centre, receiving afferents primarily from the cortex, but also from the substantia nigra, thalamus, and external globus pallidus. There are two primary pathways from the striatum through the basal ganglia (‘direct’ and ‘indirect’), which incorporate different components of the basal ganglia circuitry, and play different roles in controlling and planning movements and cognition. #exercise #theexercisemovement #unsw #neura #neuroscience #basalganglia #thebrain #theexercisephysiologist #exercisephysiology #exercisephysiologist #movemore #exerciseright at Naremburn

From @soton_brain_hub - A nice colourful transverse section through the brain. We can see the cerebral components of the basal ganglia. These include the head of the caudate nucleus, the putamen and the the internal and external segments of the globus pallidus. Deep in the temporal lobe we can see the hippocampus and its associated structures, most notably its major outflow, the fornix. Running between the basal ganglia structures and the thalamus is the internal capsule, a strip of white matter that contains important motor and sensory tracts. Copaiba update! Thursday before our camping trip last weekend, I made up a small roller bottle for Emaline. She's sensitive to most things so I used a heavy dilution. Lately, Emaline has been having increased feelings of frustration, with a short fuse, aggression, rage, many of the behaviours that come when her physical body is out of balance. This stems from immune issues since birth. That’s why I’m big on baby guy health!! The lessons! 😱 She often gets low grade fevers and dry coughs. We've since discovered that she is prone to strep infection. Strep is a bacteria that can live in different areas of the body. Something that won’t show up on traditional tests. When we have inflammation in our neurological system, it can affect the basal ganglia part of our brain which is the fight or flight; cognition; memory portion and can bring on bipolar/OCD behaviours. There have been a couple things we started last weekend, one being the Copaiba. We noticed that her aggression became tamed. In common scenarios where she would flee, she was more in control and she was way more chatty in a friendly way. I've since increased the drops in the roller and continue to notice that when we forget to apply it, she is less communal and easily anxious. I started using it on the Friday, while on our camping trip. I wasn't feeling the greatest, when we got home. When we return from any adventure, we often have a bunch of things to unpack, piles of laundry, overtired kids to hang out with, cleaning, putting away etc AND we were having a visitor the next day which often makes me feel anxious that I have to clean up and do all the things before they arrive. Well, complete opposite. Instead of losing my cool and being angry and frustrated, I was super chill and in a go with the flow mood. I WASN'T overwhelmed at all. Didn't care about the mess. I continued to roll it on my temples and throat every hour that morning and my headache and throat pain were gone by noon. Copaiba works on 6 different body systems! No other oil works on that many! No pharmaceutical drug works on that many! Check out my next post on copaiba to learn about the - Why it works aka science part of it. 💓🌱✨

Happy Friday! Let's talk about habits. If you follow my stories, you know that I've been reading #thepowerofhabit by @charlesduhigg. I'm obsessed! I started reading it because I wanted to use the information to help my health coaching clients but it's honestly just super fascinating. Want to know something cool I learned? 40-50% of what we do each day is the result of habits stored deep within our brains. Often times we think we're making a conscious decision, but the action is actually governed by a habit loop. 🤔 And you know what else? Habits are stored in a different part of the brain (the basal ganglia) then conscious thought (the prefrontal cortex). This is part of the reason it's so stinking hard to change our habits. When we consciously decide to change a habit, we're not communicating with the habit control center. In order to change our habits we need to tap into the basal ganglia. I'm working on a blog post right now about how to use the science of habit change to live a healthy lifestyle. Be on the look out for that next week! Until then, grab a copy of #thepowerofhabit and enjoy your weekend. ☀️🏖️🌇🌅

Globus Pallidus : The globus pallidus is divided into internal and external segments and acts as one of the major output nuclei of the basal ganglia. It sends information from basal ganglia nuclei to the thalamus. The internal segments of the pallidus send the majority of output to the thalamus via the neurotransmitter GABA which has an inhibitory effect on motor function. The external segments of the pallidus are intrinsic nuclei, relaying information between other basal ganglia nuclei and internal segments of the pallidus. The globus pallidus is involved in the regulation of voluntary movement . #medicalstudent #medschool #medstudent #medicine #surgery #neurology #neuroscience #neurosurgery #neurons #basalganglia #brain #motor #movement #life #studentlife #study #studygram

Korteksden striatuma giden lifler eksitatorik; striatumdan, globus pallidus internal segmentine (GPİ) gelen yollar inhibitoriktir. GPİ’un,  talamusa gönderdiği uyarılar inhibitorik; talamusdan kortekse giden lifler eksitatorikdir. Böylece Globus pallidusun talamus üzerine olan inhibitorik etkisi (disinhibisyon ile) ortadan kalkar, talamus uyarılarak, korteksi aktive eder.

The nucleus accumbens is involved in the brain's reward circuit and behavior mediation. In neuroscience, the reward system is a collection of brain structures and neural pathways that are responsible for reward-related cognition, including associative learning (primarily classical conditioning and operant reinforcement), incentive salience (i.e., motivation and "wanting", desire, or craving for a reward), and positive emotions, particularly emotions that involve pleasure (i.e., hedonic "liking") #medicalstudent #medschool #medstudent #medicine #surgery #neurology #neuroscience #neurosurgery #neurons #basalganglia #brain #rewards #rewardcircuit #life #studentlife #study #studygram

TIME: the fourth dimension I am a keen lover of all sciences and this here is no exception. Bare with me as I totally #GEEK OUT! 🤓 So what does TIME have to do with ADHD? With a disorder like #ADHD, the person has what is best described as TIME-BLINDNESS. Simply put, we don’t #experience the passage of #time. There are many theories as to why. One theory suggests the problem lay in the #cerebellum, #basalganglia,or the #dorsal #prefrontal #lobe. This means our “sensory” #system is shut off. With ADHD and #add, we sense only two kinds of time: NOW and NOT NOW. Time management is nearly impossible, we are often late for commitments and under estimate how long tasks will take. We just don’t sense time like a neurotypical person. 🤭 We also have a disruption with our #Circadian Rhythm (internal clock); it’s all messed up. It’s pretty common for us to have #sleep #disturbances and #chronic #fatigue because of this. 💤💤💤 Further, and this I find wild, we experience time in a #CURVILINEAR way, unlike neurotypical people where they experience time in a #linear fashion. What does this mean? It means our brains make NO distinction between past, #present or future. They are all the same to us. This is why planning for the future can be difficult or why #ruminating over the past can be all consuming. Past, present and future simply coexist. 🤯🤯🤯. . #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #facts #education #brain #tools #timeblindness #brain #facts #time #adhd #adultadhd #adhdproblems

You and I operate on auto-pilot a LOT more than we like to think, and that’s the case for how we handle our money, too. Thank you, basal ganglia, a part of our brain that develops habits and routine so we don’t have to think through every aspect of, say, how to eat or how to drive, once learned. Here’s how it works: ☝️we receive a cue. ✌🏻we take an action 👏🏻 we receive some kind of “reward”. YAY! Repeat. 1. We receive a cue. 2. We take an action. 3. We receive a reward. YAY! Our 🧠 now develops an auto-pilot function so that we no longer make a conscious decision to take the associated action. We just do it. We just do it.We just do it. We just do it. Obviously this has tremendous implication for our habits with money (and don’t doubt for a minute that this isn’t exploited by marketers et alia). I will be talking about habits for the next several Wednesdays here so stay tuned. In the meantime, next time you reach for your credit card, just check in with yourself if your executive part of your brain is in gear or if your basil ganglia has kicked in. at Vancouver, British Columbia

“The hardest thing is watching someone you love forget they love you”. The brain is the most complex organ in the body. It is made up of over 90 billion cells. These cells are the essence of what makes us human. The way we think, act, communicate, interact and make sense of the world is the result of how our brains work. When we arrived at intensive rehab almost 8 weeks ago, Jack couldn’t hold his head up, he was barely vocalizing let alone babbling, he couldn’t reach and grasp, he only looked over his left shoulder, he was tube fed and had very little voluntary movement. We’ve come so far with this little fighter. Today we saw him spin himself 180 degrees in tummy time, eat noodles (and eggplant... what a palate.... 🍆👼🏼) feed himself a melting cracker (or 5) try to hold up his own sippy cup (crush his water goal for the first time... 370ml!), heard him make the snake sound and work very hard to try and make it a few centimeters closer to the bookshelf. To call him determined is an understatement. 💪🏻 how’s that for a #transformationtuesday Goals: sitting up unsupported, crawling, more solids, being able to handle finger foods, using both hands and working on that pincer grasp.

Someone’s figured out the ultimate lounge... when he’s not dishing out the blue steel- see second pic —>. Had a great day today and have started to notice how much better his right hand is getting... Jack is trying to feed himself more food and is grasping things with an inward flexion more often (vs. an outward hand). In tummy time he is pushing himself up further and is kicking his legs more. C’mon crawling c’mon! (Chances are he’ll be on the move just in time for our flight home 🤞🏻🤦🏼‍♀️)

OH SWEET CHILD OF MINE | This kid put me through the wringer today. Every week is new with him. This week he is 100% against napping in his crib- “the carrier will do nicely thank you very much.” And true to his Old Jack nature decided today that he was also not so interested in sleeping through his latest EP (a specialized musculoskeletal, electrophysiological EEG) test this afternoon. Despite the TWO sedatives they ended up giving him. The nurses claimed he’d be sleeping all afternoon. Not so, nurses. Not so. He didn’t sleep at all through his test. In fact it took 2.5 hours for us to get him to sleep. And while Matt & I were busy biting our nails over how doped up and “floppy” his body seemed, Jack was busy “dadada”-ing to the technician. I would love to say that I handled my whiny morning with Jack with grace and then quietly tried to get him to sleep while he was on sedatives and hooked up once again to a vitals machine. But I didn’t and I wasn’t. I stressed. And I huffed and puffed. Matt did much better with the stress today than I did. We seem to balance each other out that way. | After Jack finally napped Matt and I, as usual, were able to hash it out and decompress and laugh at this crazy little kid who is ours.

This is the way you do it right? | This kid was the ultimate goof today. Jack’s found many ways to “ride” his stroller including in tummy time and a side lounge apparently. | On a more serious note, one of the difficult things about this process has been to mourn the loss of one version of your child while getting to know this new version (while also seeing snippets of his old self shining through). Old Jack would never stick with one activity for more than a few minutes. If we were lucky. Once he was done a task it was on to the next thing. And quickly. Jack now will happily sit on someone’s lap and busy himself practicing his fine motor skills taking something out of a container and putting it back in. Over and over again. Old Jack loved soothers. Jack now has zero interest in them. (Probably due to dysphagia from the neurological changes he’s experienced). Old Jack loved making the dog, whale and monkey animal sounds. Jack’s now been into the clip-clop horse and snake sounds and fish face. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Regardless, Jack could always be a goof and maybe it was the heat, but this little man was hamming it up wherever he went today. Maybe all of his old personality traits will edge their way back in or maybe some will be forever a memory of his first year of life. Kids change so quickly as it is- maybe half of it can be blamed on natural development. But either way Jack’s smile (swipe left for a shot of that grin) and goofy antics will win my heart over again and again. ♥️

Peek-a-boo! Turning every play session into therapy over here. We’re working hard to get Jack to play with both hands. He’s predominately been using his right, and today his left arm seemed less active to me than yesterday. But, when you remind him, he will activate that left side. Go, go, gadget arm. 💪🏻

Weekends off from rehab mean lots of time to play and hang in town with Oma. But just because we’re not in rehab doesn’t mean there’s no therapy. We kept this boy busy rolling, working on drawing his legs up, doing tummy time, fine motor practice and eating. (a.k.a. Oma feeding him lots of ice cream) 🍦
