My dad is the reason I became a Physical Therapist, he had a hemorrhagic stroke at the age of 41. Today is his 54th birthday & i feel privileged to have him in not just my life but in ALL of our lives because he makes us better people. Check your blood pressure no matter how “in-shape” you are or no matter how good you feel, our bodies have abnormalities that we can’t always see. Wake up, my warrior spirit! 🌪 . . I believe we can nurture the many parts of ourselves from the inside out and the outside in. . . That’s the only reason I’m trying boxing lessons. . . It’s not for fitness, it’s not for competition, it’s not even for hand eye coordination although that shit’s super stimulating for my nervous system and I’ll take it. . . It’s a deliberate effort to 🔥 up my inner Xena (warrior princess 😂) and to allow myself to feel uncomfortable and awkward in the process. . . Because few things that come easily are worth pursuing. . . Most of the time, the things you are really proud of come with a little grit and a lot of work. Had a lovely opportunity to be interviewed by the humble and passionate Trent Bice from Full Throttle Entertainment for his new podcast series, The Techno Beat. "Melbourne techno for insightful conversations, direct from his studio in St Kilda. DJs, Producers and Club Owners delve deeper into what keeps the heart of Melbourne techno beating. Hear their journeys into the scene and get the all-access pass into why Melbourne techno is great; must-see upcoming events, underground parties and behind-the-decks insight. From Doofs to the D Floors, laugh and learn whilst finding new epic tunes along the way." Probably the best interview I've had to date. Really enjoyed getting to talk about a few things other than just music; like my neuroscience research which is another area of my life that I'm very passionate about. Few little shout outs in here to a few great people doing a lot to make Melbourne the wonderful scene it is. If you're interested in hearing about the role music has to play in changing our brain to overcome movement and cognitive diseases like Parkinson's or a bit about my journey with music thus far please have a listen and make sure you follow this great podcast series which can be found on itunes, Spotify & Soundcloud. CIRCLE OF WILLIS Circle of willis is an arterial circle presents at the base of the brain within the interpenducular cistern. The arterial circle is formed by - Anteriorly by the anterior communicating artery, which connects right and left anterior cerebral arteries . -Anterolaterally by anterior cerebral arteries arising from internal carotid artery . -Posterolaterally by posterior communicating arteries : On each side it connects the internal carotid artery with posterior cerebral artery . -Posteriorly the two posterior cerebral arteries The branches arising from this arterial circle provide many central ( Perforating ) branches which perforate the base of the brain (Anterior and posterior perforated substances ) to supply the deeper structures like basal ganglia, thalamus , hypothalamus, and limbic system. This communication between vertebral and carotid system of arteries provides an alternate route of blood supply to the brain in case of occlusion of any of these arteries . #brain #arteries #anterior #poterior #bloodsupply #branches #schematic #diagram #circleofwillis #spinalartery #recurrentbranch #basalganglia #thalamus #medlife #medicine #anatomy #anatomyandphysiology #learnwithsuzie

The brain is one of my favorite organs to learn about. It is complex in the amount of work that it is involved in, and so simple in how it functions. Basically it is mainly pumps and switches; an organic motherboard of nature's computer. It is connected to every part of your body. Your neurons run with all of your blood vessels in order to react to anything that interacts with the body. The basal ganglia comprise a group of structures that regulate the initiation of movements, balance, eye movements, and posture. They are strongly connected to other motor areas in the brain and link the thalamus with the motor cortex. The basal ganglia are also involved in cognitive and emotional behaviors and play an important role in reward and reinforcement, addictive behaviors and habit formation. The basal ganglia are particularly associated with movement disorders such as Parkinson's and Huntington's disease. In terms of cognitive disorders, basal ganglia abnormalities have been found in individuals with schizophrenia, and may explain habit learning deficits associated with the disorder. The basal ganglia may also contribute the neuropathology of depression, particularly in relation to the limbic system. What brain part have you found the most interesting so far? That feeling when the protocol you’ve been trying to get working FINALLY WORKS!🙏 This is half of a brain 🧠, and you can see that where the pointer👈 is, the tissue is stained a little darker. This is the basal ganglia-a part of the brain important for the coordination of movement. 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️ In my PhD thesis👩🏼‍🔬, I’m trying to understand how the basal ganglia affects behavioral variability🐦. This research will help us better understand basal ganglia disorders, like Parkinson’s disease, that result in abnormal 🙅🏼‍♀️ motor variabilities.

Treating ADHD and Anxiety at the same time is almost a given in my practice. So often my client’s @doc_amen Clinic Brain System type will present as Type 7- Anxious Type. # I will use techniques, supplements and food to improve PFC (executive center) activity and then others to calm the Basal Ganglia (anxiety center). # This combination presentation can create quite the challenge, but happens very often with clients! I really love exercise for this brain type, since it wakes up the PFC and calms down the Basal Ganglia! #integrativetherapy #adhdawareness #executivefunctioning #basalganglia #prefrontalcortex #psychology #neuropsychology

@ciderhousecounseling

The prefrontal cortex is in charge of a variety of complex behaviors, including planning, and greatly contributes to personality development. This is not fully developed until the age of 25. The prefrontal cortex is the area of executive functions. And relates to abilities to differentiate among conflicting thoughts, determine good and bad, better and best, same and different future consequences of current activities, working towards a defined goal, predictions of outcomes, expectations based on actions, and social control.⠀ .⠀ .⠀ The basal ganglia is part of the limbic system. The limbic system is our fight or flight part of the brain. Not a lot of effort needs to be going into these thoughts. The basal ganglia also includes functions such as motor movements procedural learning, routine behaviors (habits), eye movements, cognition, and emotions. This part of the brain is the autopilot system of the brain. It’s why we don’t have to think a lot when we do nature movements like reaching for a drink, eating, typing, and other day to day functions ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ So to simplify this we will break it down into the upstairs brain and the down stairs brain. The upstairs brain is kind of like the man in charge the boss the one that makes the rules. The down stairs brain is the part of the brain that does all to work to make the body move and feel the emotions. What happens when we form habits is that the down stairs brain is disconnected from the upstairs brain. Which is sometimes a good thing just imagine what it would be like every time you had to walk you had to think through it thoroughly. We need our brain to go on auto pilot sometimes. Other times when we want to target these negative behaviors we have to link the upstairs brain and the down stairs brain. ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #ourbrain #prefrontalcortex #basalganglia

@the_exercise_physiologist_

What is the basal ganglia? 🧠 The basal ganglia is a group of sub-cortical nuclei thought to be involved in motor control and learning. The nuclei comprising the basal ganglia include the caudate, putamen, globus pallidus, the subthalamic nucleus, and the substantia nigra. The caudate and putamen together form the striatum, while the globus pallidus and the putamen together form the lenticular nucleus. The striatum is the principal input centre, receiving afferents primarily from the cortex, but also from the substantia nigra, thalamus, and external globus pallidus. There are two primary pathways from the striatum through the basal ganglia (‘direct’ and ‘indirect’), which incorporate different components of the basal ganglia circuitry, and play different roles in controlling and planning movements and cognition. #exercise #neuroscience #exercisephysiology #exerciseright #basalganglia #brain #neuroanatomy #exercisephysiologist at Sydney, Australia

What is it? The basal ganglia are a group of structures found deep within the cerebral hemispheres. Basal ganglia are strongly interconnected with the cerebral cortex, thalamus, and brainstem, as well as several other brain areas. What is it’s function? According to Wikipedia “The basal ganglia are associated with a variety of functions including: control of voluntary motor movements, procedural learning, habit learning, eye movements, cognition, and emotion.” By understanding it’s existence and function, we’re better able to understand how our brain 🧠 habitually operates and how to begin to achieve a degree of control over it. at London, United Kingdom

October 9th is PANDAS/PANS Awareness Day. For me PANDAS meant having all my hopes and dreams for the future and everything that I thought made me me literally ripped away in an instant. My dreams have changed and I've grown through this experience, but I will never be the same. I can clinically list all the symptoms of this disorder, but to actually experience them in all their severity is something completely different. To all the children and adults suffering from PANDAS/PANS, and to all those who stand by them, you are some of the bravest people I know. To keep fighting takes strength unimaginable. Thank you to everyone who raises awareness for this disorder not just today, but everyday. Your efforts will not be in vain. Currently reading THE POWER OF HABIT by charlesduhigg what an amazing book! Really in-depth scientific neurological views of why we do what we do and how we can change. Did you know habits are stored in small part of our brain called basalganglia ? Even if you lose your memory you don't lose your habit-making behaviours. How interesting!! All of us have badhabits - want to change? Key thought: don't break the habit - break the routine. Habits are broken down into 3 parts: 1: cue or trigger. What triggers you to action? 2: routine - the action you take to get to the reward. 3: reward - what you gain from acting on your trigger. Questions to ponder: what are my triggers? What is my actual reward? What new routines can I implement to get the same reward. Don't change the trigger or reward - change the routine!! #habits #books #reading #science #basalganglia #routines #change at Tower Bridge

@rebekahcaudwell

I owe a post for my sister @libbyc4 💖 I am enormously passionate about physiological causes of mental health issues, whether pathogenic, environmental or immunological. This is crucial to the understanding of brain health. It is particularly important to consider if you (or perhaps your child) have had a happy upbringing, little trauma, and have felt yourself to be relatively balanced. If a condition comes utterly out of the blue, from calm waters, and blindsides you and you honestly cannot attribute it to anything, then organic causes MUST be looked at. That said: Many people have experiences in life that are terribly sad or traumatic, or suffer chronic stress, which can all lead to problems. The feelings these experiences create can cause very real physiological changes in your body, such as disrupting your gut, which in turn can disrupt everything, including brain chemistry. In these cases organic & systemic components should still always be looked, at to aid recovery. Can you improve the gut? Do you have enough zinc & magnesium, or Vit D? Minerals often go out of whack contributing to a cascade of problems. But there is obviously no substitute for acknowledging that experiences have caused this problem and working with a trained professional to resolve them, to allow the feelings, to come to understand them, and finally, with time & effort, hopefully to accept them. I believe we all understand psychotherapy, its essential role and how it can save lives. So this is not my crusade. When I talk about mental health I am campaigning for a furthering of understanding of how something OTHER than experience can be at play. When something causes inflammation in the brain, it prevents the brain from operating correctly. This can as easily be in the limbic centre as any other area. No-one debates that if there is a problem in the cerebellum then someone may develop problems with movement. The science is expanding all the time, and will change the face of what we can do for countless people & children... #panspandas #neuropsychiatricdisorders #mentalhealth #encephalitis #inflammation #inflammationofthebrain #brain #neurology #passion #sunday #basalganglia #limbiccentre

Unleash the dragon! It might look a bit silly and perhaps not as sexy, but exhaling vapor from your nose rather than your mouth is a helpful trick to absorb more beneficial terpenes and cannabinoids instantly! . Your ability to smell comes from specialized sensory cells, called olfactory sensory neurons, which are found in a small patch of tissue high inside the nose. These cells connect directly to the brain. When you exhale from your nose, the vapor is able to pass by these olfactory sensory neurons and the blood vessels in your nasal passage for a quick entry into your bloodstream and then the CB1 and CB2 receptors in your brain. . Our favorite way to vape CBD is with our @wildflower_plantsheal vaporizers. Use code EXCHANGE for 10% off your first order! . Intuition is rooted in our brain’s uncanny ability to rapidly know/sense an answer/insight without knowing why—beyond conscious thought! This experience is found to link to part of the brain known as the Basal Ganglia and more specifically the Caudate Nucleus. Also the areas of the amygdala, anterior insula, and ventral occipito-temporal regions were seen to be activated. . . ‘It is proposed that people continuously, without conscious attention, recognize patterns in the stream of sensations that impinge upon them. What exactly is being recognized is not clear yet, The result is a vague perception of coherence which is not explicitly describable but instead embodied in a "gut feeling" which subsequently biases thought and inquiry.” NCBI PUBMED. . . Intuition is correlated to our automatic unconscious processing that happens as a result of fast processing in the brain. . . Do you tune into your brains intuition?
