🍌 #BookReview 🍌 ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE by Gabriel Garcia Marquez 81/100 BBC Top 100 Books "The secret of a good old age is simply an honorable pact with solitude.” __ The epic narrative of the rise and fall of the mythical Columbian town of Maconda told through the legacy of its founding family, the Buendias. __ I have a lot of respect for this book but I did not enjoy it. I sat with this book for a few days trying to wrap my head around all the moving parts and it's a difficult thing to do. It's one of those books that you'll find something new with almost every rereading. When I was 50 pages in I was about ready to give. Once again GGM was writing freely about "impressive" genitalia and it was still too soon after reading Love in the Time of Cholera to go through that again. I was questioning how he could have won his Nobel Prize for. this. But I'm stubborn and so I kept reading and I'm glad I did. One thing you should know about this novel is that it popularised the genre that many of us know and love of magical realism. We won't say he invented it as he himself said he wrote this novel in the tradition of the stories his grandparents used to tell him in which both the fantastical and the normal were recited in the same deadpan tone of voice. But this is the novel that paved the way for more writers to experiment in and be published in this style. The other thing you should know is that it reads like an ancient creation narrative. It's symbolism wrapped in symbolism upon symbolism. It's political and introspective. And there are many moments of pure literary magic. Where I struggled most was in the pacing. TBH I often felt like I was listening to a storyteller with a habit of veering off on irrelevant tangents. Of course, these tangents became relevant, which is part of the genius, but it was hard to stay on track. Also, be prepared for the incest, child-brides, female objectification and all the large phalluses. I'm glad I read it, but I think I've read enough GGM now. #100yearsofsolitude #gabrielgarciamarquez #nobleprizewinners #literaryfiction #magicalrealism #translatedbooks #classics #BBCtop100

💀 #BookReview 💀 MORT by Terry Pratchett 80/100 BBC Top 100 Books __ As Death's apprentice, Mort will have free board and lodging, use of the company horse, and he won't need time off for family funerals. The position is everything Mort thought he'd ever wanted until he discovers that this perfect job can be a killer on his love life. __ So this might just be a case of third time's a charm. When I read THE COLOUR OF MAGIC I didn't think I would ever be writing a winning review for a Discworld novel but then I read GUARDS! GUARDS! which was heaps better and now MORT might have just won me around. I think I'm slowly beginning to understand why these books have such a cult following. MORT is book 4 in the DISCWORLD series and book 1 of the Death series (thanks @the.storygraph for my helpful cheat sheet). It features Pratchett's usual dry and satirical humour but the humanity of the characters is at the forefront of this novel, even when it comes to the anthropomorphic personification of death, Death. Yes, it continues to be bizarre and yes the jokes are constant and sometimes overwhelming but participating in the character growth of Mort from awkward human whom nobody wants to the lord of the underworld, and watching Death attempt to experience what it's like to be a human is surprisingly heartwarming. One of my biggest complaints with THE COLOUR OF MAGIC was that it didn't seem to go anywhere. It felt like the same bad joke was being played on repeat. In MORT there is, dare I say it, character growth. It's the first book I've read in the series that has me wanting to read more. Maybe I've just read enough of Terry Pratchett that I'm beginning to get on board with the humour or maybe they really are getting better. I have one more Discworld book on my list to read, NIGHT WATCH, and after my experience with MORT I'm kind of looking forward to it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ #Mort #Discworld #TheColourOfMagic #TerryPratchett #Fantasy #Satire #BBCTop100 #ReadingLists #AmReading #SurprisingReads

ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE by Gabriel Garcia Marquez @ab_reads loves this book. @reads.and.reveries loves this book. One of my best friends read it on the recommendation of her mother and couldn't finish it 😅. So I've heard both good and bad things about it but the good is beginning to outweigh the bad. I read LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA last year (same author) and it was one of the worst books I've read. There were so many things wrong with it and I listed a lot of them in my review (on my blog and feed but you'll have to do a lot of scrolling on my feed). But people love GGM and so there must be a reason, which I will hopefully find in this book. I have two other books I want to read before I start it but I'm hoping to read it this. It would feel almost rude not to a read a book with such an apt title while in quarantine. So who has read this book and love it? Who has read this and book and hated it? Who has no intentions of ever reading it? 😅 #100yearsofsolitude #GabrielGarciaMarquez #BBCTop100 #readinglists #readingchallenge #classics #booksinthewild #quaratinereading #TBR #secondhandbooks

TOP TIP: Taking pictures of books outside during quarantine is great. Today I went outside and took photos of books for the first time in 5 weeks (since quarantining) and guess what, it was great! I need to try and get all my book shots done while everyone is holed-up indoors so nobody will look at me weirdly or ask me if I sell books for a living 🙃 These are the next 6 books I plan to tackle from the BBC's Top 100 Books of our time list that was compiled back in 2003. As you can see, they are varying levels of thickness so who knows how long it will take me to get through these. Especially as I will be breaking up these reads with more recent releases, my IRL book club books and books by Black authors TBH. Not many of them feature on this list 😐 Books Pictured: 🔖Katherine by Anna Seyton 🔖A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth 🔖The Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher 🔖100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez 🔖The Clan of the Cave Bear by J M Auel 🔖Kane and Abel by Jeffrey Archer Now that I've reached the tail-end of the list, the majority of books left are either ones I hadn't heard of or that I don't expect great things from. But one of the reasons I started this list (7 years ago) was to push myself out of my reading comfort zone in the hope of learning new things and finding hidden gems. I've been more impressed than disappointed by the books in this list and that's one reason why I'm determined to complete it this year. That and the fact that I've very competitive and hate to lose, even if the competition is only against myself. I know many people read book prize longlists and do reading challenges such as #ReadingWomen and #ReadHarder. What's your favourite way to push yourself out of your reading comfort zone? P.S. I bought these books cheap and secondhand so they're not very bookstagram-worthy. #BBCTop100 #ReadingList #ReadingChallenge #BlackBookstagram #BlackBookstagrammer #LiteraryFiction #SpringReads #QuarantineReads

🏝️ #BookReview 🏝️ SWALLOWS AND AMAZONS by Arthur Ransome 79/100 BBC Top 100 Books (2003) A story of childhood adventure, explorers and pirates, in the wilds of the lake district. __ I would have never read this book if I wasn't reading through this BBC list from 2003 and, to be honest, I wasn't looking forward to this volume and was very ready to DNF. An adventure novel from the 1930s? I was ready for sexism and racism and having to excuse it all because of history. I was pleasantly surprised. It's a cast of girls and boys of mixed ages, the girls aren't motherly and the boys aren't insensitive. And, despite being published in the 1930s, there is sensitivity in discussions surrounding "natives" and "savages" - albeit nobody's favourite choice of word. John, Susan, Titty, and Roger are the children of a sea Captain spending their summer holidays in the Lake District with their mother, baby sister Vicky, and Vicky's nurse. For a couple of weeks in the summer, the children are allowed to sail out on a boat their father made for them and camp out on a small island in the lakes. They soon make friends with two sisters who are also sailors-in-making (pirates really) and get caught up in a grand adventure involving thieves and treasure and the like. I was transported to an idyllic time in which children could go camping by themselves and all the adults in the community would band together to take care of them. I liked how the girls were still girly and yet adventurous. And there's a moment where the oldest boy deals with his emotions maturely. I especially loved that the children's mother was just as knowledgable about sailing and the outdoors and as able to guide them in their adventuring as their father. @bluestockingbookshelf talked a while ago about whether books are gendered and this is just the sort of book that is in danger of being assigned to boys alone. But in reading it you see quite clearly that this is not a boy's book. It's a book for all children, maybe even a book for some adults. Definitely, one I'll be recommending to my nephews and niece. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ #SwallowsAndAmazons #ArthurRansome #BBCTop100 #ChildrensBooks #Classics #AdventureStories

📚 #Wrapup 📚 So March was a month, eh 😪 Sounds like April is going to be similar... 😬Anyways... It's that time again. Here's my March wrapup. Although I read fewer books than last month, I enjoyed reading more. Maybe it was the books, maybe it was just life, maybe it was the need for a distraction. Books read: 6 Pages read: 1,999 DNF'ed: 1 Audiobooks: 9:44:00 Books that pleasantly surprised me: 🔖SWALLOWS AND AMAZONS 🔖GUARDS! GUARDS! 🔖THE NIGHT CIRCUS Books that were a struggle: 🔖THE GOD OF SMALL THINGS Books that weren't worth the struggle: 🔖BARCELONA DAYS Books that were fine but not lifechanging: 🔖THE GIRLS Is anyone struggling with finding a balance when it comes to talking about COVID-19? I don't want to not mention it because it's literally affecting all of us but I also don't want to just mention it all the time. Here's to hoping and praying for a summertime spent reading outside in the sun with friends 🙏🏾 #monthlywrapup #BBCTop100 #ReadingLists #BookSpines #MonthlyReading #LibraryBooks #AmReading #SpringReads

Am I allowed outside yet? Motley is all of us, looking out to the world beyond our windows, wondering if it's safe to go out there yet. That or she's spotted a squirrel. I can't remember if I've done one of these before, but I thought now would be a nice time to do a quarterly update. I've read 20/100 books this year but I'm hoping to complete book no. 21 today so it can be in my month-end wrap-up 🤞🏾 I started the year with 27 books left on the BBC top 100 books list and I now have 22 books left. I've read 16 books by women, 10 by men. I've read 7 nonfiction books. I've read approx 7966 pages. And I've watched the world as I know it come to a standstill 😳😬 How are you doing on your reading goals so far? 🐲 #BookReview 🐲 GUARDS! GUARDS! by Terry Pratchett *77/100 BBC Top Books of Our Time (2003)* "They may be called the Palace Guard, the City Guard, or the Patrol. Whatever the name, their purpose in any work of heroic fantasy is identical: it is, round about Chapter Three (or ten minutes into the film) to rush into the room, attack the hero one at a time, and be slaughtered. No-one ever asks them if they wanted to. This book dedicated to them." Back in December, I read THE COLOUR OF MAGIC, my first Terry Pratchett book and the first in the Discworld. I didn't get it. The humour was lost on me and the whole thing just felt like a waste of time. This book is a testament to the fact that an author might just surprise you. I got on WAY better with this one. GUARDS! GUARDS! is book #8 of Discworld and #1 of City Watch. A secret decides to organise a coup by unleashing a dragon on the city and it's up to the failing City Watchmen to save the city. Yes, it was still in that peculiar Terry Prachett satirical fantasy in which you sometimes don't know where you are in the book or what the point is, but I could get more on board with the humour this time and found myself actually rooting for some of the characters. The BBC really loves TP because there are 2 more of his books on the list but following this one I'm more optimistic about making my way through them. The remaining TP books on the list are Mort, Good Omens and Night Watch. Can anyone let me know what I can expect with these? #BBCTop100 #TerryPratchett #GuardsGuards #fantasy #BookLists #TBR #BlackBookstagram #BlackBookstagrammer #WinterReads #AmReading

Just finished reading #thegreatgatsby. It was short and sad and I read it on my kindle so no pic. 📖 18/52 (again, think I’ve been miscounting). Finally finished #DavidCopperfield and loved it. It is Charles Dickens’ favourite of his novels and it is based in part on his own experience growing up. The characters are wonderful, the plot ticks along at its own pace, mostly steady but there’s still room for heartbreak and euphoria along the way. This is the third #CharlesDickens novel I’ve read and I think my favourite so far. It’s getting more challenging to find time to read now that Cleo is 8 months and so easily distracted from her milk feeds so it’s taken me over a month to read this book. Next on my list is The Great Gatsby, set in New York in the roaring twenties. 📖18/52 #reading #readingisfundamental #readingtime #readersofinstagram #readingchallenge #bbctop100

📚 #JanuaryWrapup 📚 For a while there I was getting better organised and actually posting my monthly wrapups at the end of the month. Well, it was fun while it lasted. I started this month fairly enthusiastically but then I just kept reading books that slowed my pace down until I finally gave up on reading altogether for binge-watching One Tree Hill. Can we all just acknowledge that Nathan Scott and Brooke Davies are the true MVPs of that show? I also spent the last week of this month on a sister vacay (minus 1) to LA and a weekend monastery-themed retreat organised and run by my husband for the Moody Theological Seminary students. Both trips were enriching and powerful in their different ways but boy am I happy to be home. This month I read 7 books, which is below my 2019 average of 8.5. 2 were nonfiction, 1 was middle grade, 1 was from my #BBCTop100 challenge and 2 were by black authors. I also read 2,171 pages. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 🔖ME AND WHITE SUPREMACY (nonfic) - I went in with an open mind and came out impressed 🔖WHY WE CAN'T WAIT (nonfic) - everyone should read this book ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🔖CLEAN GETAWAY (MG) - I did not expect this book to move me like it did 🔖AMERICAN DIRT (fic) - I still encourage you to check out what #ownvoicesreviews say regarding this book. It was originally rated 5 stars but on reflection, it didn't match how the other five-star reads made me feel. ⭐⭐⭐ 🔖DROWNING WITH OTHERS (fic) - great premise, meh execution 🔖BRIDESHEAD REVISITED - great writing, meh pace 🔖WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN - cut the first 200 pages and would have been a 4 but those last 200 pages are pretty awesome How did everyone else start their year of reading? Bold and enthusiastic or dragging their feet like me? #winterreads #blackbookstagram #blackbookstagrammer #bookblog #amreading #literaryfiction #igreads #bookishpost

LIFE’S | TOO | SHORT War and Peace is on my reading list as part of a 3 year challenge I’ve set myself to complete the BBC’s 100 best loved books list. When I started the challenge in July I had already read 48 books. Since I started, I’ve completed 15 books but delayed starting this one as I was put off by my perception of it, that it will be hard going and challenging to read. I was right that it is hard going... but not for the reasons I thought... I just don’t really get it. There’s no connection with the characters. There’s too many characters and I don’t understand them, nor can I keep up with who they all are, nor do I care enough to. I love period classics but not this one. I think my challenge might end at 99/100 because frankly life is too short to force myself to read this book! It’s not the length of the book; I’ve read longer and more challenging books then this in the past but after enduring 14% of it (I’m reading it on my kindle) I refuse to read any more. Sorry fans of Tolstoy! #reading #readersofinstagram #readingisfundamental #readingchallenge #bbctop100 #bbctop100books #books #tolstoy #leotolstoy

One of my targets for #2020 is to crack on with reading all the books on the BBC’s top 100. But this list raises lots of questions for me. Not least of which are: 1. Why only 4 Harry Potters? 2. Jeffrey Archer, really? 3. Where are the Famous Five? 4. How on earth am I going to make it through all that Thomas Hardy? and, most importantly, 5. Why do I own so many books I’ve never read?! 🦊 #bulletjournal #bujo #books #readinglist #reading #bookstagram #BBCtop100 #top100 #ThomasHardy #HarryPotter #EnidBlyton #FamousFive #TBR

I finished no 15. A Christmas Carol novella last night, it’s fun and different to what I expected. I suppose I know the story from many different interpretations over the years, having never read the book before now. I’m going to watch the recent TV adaptation too but I mostly spend my evenings putting Cleo to bed over and over again so not sure if I’ll get the chance! #readingchallenge #bbctop100 #bbctop100books #books #reading #readingisfundamental

Now that my #goodreadschallenge2019 is complete, I can focus my attention on enioying “the classics” ... Charles Dickens is an absolute wordsmith and I enjoyed every sentence of this literary masterpiece. ————-—— My fave quotes in this book —————- “Take nothing on its looks; take everything on evidence. There's no better rule.” •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• “ That was a memorable day to me, for it made great changes in me. But it is the same with any life. Imagine one selected day struck out of it, and think how different its course would have been. Pause you who read this, and think for a moment of the long chain of iron or gold, of thorns or flowers, that would never have bound you, but for the formation of the first link on one memorable day.”

Moral: “we have to build the republic of heaven where we are, because for us there is no elsewhere” and I love his quote about his writing: “read like a butterfly, write like a bee” #thegoldencompass #philippullman #bbctop100 #book10of2018 #readlikeabutterflywritelikeabee #hisdarkmaterials #hisdarkmaterialstrilogy

Just about to finish Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, but next on the list is Little Women. I’m really enjoying the BBC Top 100 list. I’ve just finished Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons, which I found funny and a lively quick read. Next I’ve chosen Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie. It’s the first Rushdie I’ve read. #salmanrushdie #midnightschildren #top100bookstoreadbeforeyoudie #bbctop100 #bookworm #bookworming #readingchallenge #bookishfeatures #lovereading #foodforthemind

Have been trying to read Bleak House since March. I'll go back to it but it's time for a break. With a foreword by Tony Benn, this book (also on BBC top 100) seems apt for our times. #bbctop100 #bbcbigread #roberttressell

"As happens sometimes, a moment settled and hovered and remained for much more than a moment. And sound stopped and movement stopped for much, much more than a moment." - Of Mice and Men **** Continuing on in my attempt to complete the BBC Big Read's top 100 books for the bucket list - this Steinbeck classic is next on the list! What's everyone else reading today?

Bueno..

This is a pretty big moment for me, I am now halfway through my BBC top 100 list! 51-100 have been quite the journey and I'm excited for 1-50! #51 Life of Pi "I must say a word about fear. It's life's only true opponent. Only fear can defeat life. It is a clever, treacherous adversary, how well I know. It has no decency, respects no law or convention, shows no mercy. It goes for your weakest spot, which it finds with unerring ease...." Up Next: Atonement #fahrnerreads #bbctop100

52. Dune I want to be a Bene Gesserit "I must not fear. Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain. Everything you love about Ulysses is in The Waves but on another planet, in a different universe. God gave Virginia Woolf a golden mind. Happy #bbctop100 was so enthusiastic in their approval of this enchantress #ParadiseGirls

#bbctop100 features Virginia Woolf in two of the top 5 spots showing why she's the gift that keeps giving. The original Paradise Girl
