WOW. . I thought I’d jump on this 10 year bandwagon thing for fun. I had no idea how much emotion it would invoke in me. . The girl on the left had a lot of pain. She had been “in love” and lost it. She was in the throes of a major eating disorder that literally nobody knew about. She was a horrible people pleaser and raging perfectionist and on a fundamental level, she was terrified to be seen for who she really was. . The woman on the right is still not perfect and never will be. However, I look at her and see the fiercest of warrior queens. Someone who has battled inner and outer demons and who at long last, has accepted the beautiful truth of who she is. . She is no longer afraid to walk in the light. She is no longer afraid to speak her truth and shine, because there’s nothing to be afraid of. . She knows that by sharing her story and daring to shine, that others will be empowered to do the same. Others will be inspired to share their own light. . I wish I could hug the girl on the left so tight, tell her she’s a badass, and show her all the amazing things to come. . As for the next decade, I am sure there will be moments of pain, but I feel like I’ve arrived on the good side. . What do you do after you binge eat?⠀ ⠀ Don’t starve yourself. ⠀ ⠀ I start there because that was my initial reaction. I thought I needed to make up somehow for the calories I ingested. ⠀ Then I would be so hungry. ⠀ ⠀ I would find myself binge eating all over again. ⠀ ⠀ It was such a vicious cycle. ⠀ ⠀ Today I focus on balancing myself out. ⠀ ⠀ I love shakes as nutrient dense ways to get in meals (not as a quick fix to compensate). I’m busy, I don’t like to spend tons of time cooking. But I like to feel satiated and know I got my nutrients in. ⠀ ⠀ I skip the green juice and make something that can sustain me. ⠀ ⠀ An example of a morning shake (or lunch or dinner) that helps balance me out, is this:⠀ ⠀ 20-25g protein powder⠀ 1-2 tbsp flax⠀ 1-2 tbsp nut butter ⠀ 1 cup frozen greens. ⠀ ⠀ I like to use unsweetened coconut or almond milk in it. Sometime I add more flavour with cacao or pb2. ⠀ ⠀ This way I stay full, I know I’m fuelling my body, I’m not starving, I’m balancing out. I stay full for hours and get back on track with my goals. ⠀ ⠀ Stop starving after binge eating. Have you ever googled “what do I eat to lose weight?”⠀ ⠀ I have. Google quickly comes up with 10000000 pages and there are still more loading. The funny thing is to some degree, I knew what to eat, healthy, less...⠀ ⠀ But I couldn’t. I could never stick to it. I saw a bagel, I wanted it. I saw a cupcake, I wanted it. I could never stick to what I set out to do. ⠀ ⠀ I had to change my relationship with food to break up with the crazy yo-yo dieting. I had to learn how to stick to what I said I was going to do. ⠀ ⠀ I had to learn how to tolerate food cravings, and not eat based on emotions, desire, and cravings. ⠀ ⠀ It was a slow process. There was a time when yo-yo dieting was all that I knew. ⠀ ⠀ I lost 40 pounds on some trendy diet. Then gained it all back. Then lost it again on the next miracle diet that came down the pike. ⠀ ⠀ The vicious cycle spun out of control for nearly 15 years. WOWEE is the saying “it’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle” ever overused. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🤦🏻‍♀️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I usually see it when regular people or health influencers are posting pictures of their delicious meals that aren’t actually so delicious or fun at all. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 👎🏻 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Like lettuce with a bit of chicken, a few pieces of tomato, a tiny sprinkle of cheese, and a dollop of Greek yogurt labelled as taco salad. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 😿 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Eating this way is restrictive. It’s not a lifestyle. Embrace your natural curls.⁣ *⁣ I know you’re looking for a guy to love you, don’t fret on all of those assholes you come across. You’re looking in the wrong places. You’re gonna be married to a beautiful loving man one day. ⁣ *⁣ Tell your family you love them every day.⁣ *⁣ Stop taking pictures with a beer in your hand. I know everyone your age does it in college, but it really doesn’t make you look cool. In fact, it’s pretty stupid. Show off your brain. Not what cheap beer the frat house has. ⁣ **⁣ 10 years later, you will look back on your wedding day and your sorority sisters and special friends from college will be there, beside you. What is intuitive eating? It’s not about eating all the crap that you’re craving. It’s about feeding your body what it needs. People often tell me that intuitive eating doesn’t “work” for them because they have tried it and gained weight. This is usually because of mindless eating. In order to get all the benefits of intuitive eating, you have to eat mindfully. Here are a few tips how to get started with intutitive eating? 1) Eat regularly and start your day with a healthy breakfast. A healthy breakfast will keep your energy levels up and will set the tone for the day. Eat 3-5 meals per day to make sure you are not starving yourself, this is usually when you start making poor nutrition choices because your blood sugar levels are too low. 2) Ask yourself: Am I hungry? If you ate your meal but are still feeling like you need something “sweet” or if you are craving some fast food immediately after eating, there is probably some emotional need that remains unfulfilled and it is not really hunger. What seems to work great for me is thinking ok if I am still hungry, should I get a second helping of whatever I was eating? If the answer is no, then I know that food is not the issue. 3) Don’t repress your feelings. We are working so hard to avoid feeling bad/sad/unhappy etc. But really you have to feel the feelings to actually heal them. So often food is the tool to avoid feelings but it is not effective or healthy. Whatever you repress stays inside and all you do is keep throwing food at it whenever it comes bubbling back to the surface. 4) Eat mindfully. Not in front of the tv, computer or iPad. Take time to eat and enjoy your food. 5 steps you can take to rebel against dieting in order to start the process of breaking free from the restrict & binge cycle and take back your power from food (continued) - Step 3 is to ditch those scales!💥 - Come on fess up, how often do you step on yours? It used to be daily for me. More a habit than anything else. - But have you ever stopped to notice the impact that number can have on your mood for the rest of the day? - 💃🏼The elation when it’s a pound or two down (I bet you do a little naked victory dance don’t you?!) 🤦🏼‍♀️The despair and deflation when it’s not budged despite best efforts - aka deprivation (cue slumped shoulders and jug lip) ☹️Or worse still the guilt and unworthiness you feel when its back on the rise (you can’t help kicking yourself when your down can you?!) - In effect, you allow that battery-operated machine, which simply shows a number representing your effect on gravity, to affect your mood and self-worth for an entire day or even days on end! - A number, which by the way, doesn’t tell you anything about how healthy you really are, how loved you are, how kind and compassionate to others you are, how successful and unique you are🌟 - It’s JUST a number! I encourage you to break the habit of stepping on them and split up with your scales! This week I’m sharing 5 steps you can take to rebel against dieting in order to start the process of breaking free from the restrict & binge cycle and take back your power from food Step 1 was to burn the imaginary diet/alcohol (if you missed it, see Mondays post) Step 2 is to rip up the rule book – because all the time there are rules, they can be broken, right? RULES especially those where we RESTRICT or FORBID anything what-so-ever create feelings of SCARCITY and LACK and that result in your brain freaking out and sending out those powerful urges to eat those exact foods, urges that appeal to the rebel in us which, as soon as will power runs out, says "F*CK IT!" all too easily, and every time! Then you punish and beat yourself up for ‘failing’. And where does that get you?! Nowhere other than straight back on the dieting hamster wheel. So what rules do you currently live by? Maybe you aim to eat less than X000 calories per day? You say you shouldn’t eat sugar and/or wheat? Or must limit carbs or saturated fats? Zero alcohol through January? Think of where you use must or mustn’t, should or shouldn’t (then eliminate those words from your vocabulary along with the associated rule as “should-ing” on yourself will get you nowhere! Some rules will be ancient, inherited by your parents and friends - others will be from one popular diet or another, which may even be outdated by recent research (for example not all saturated fats are indeed bad after all!) Some may even be very useful for example don’t eat peanuts if you have a nut allergy. All worth investigating what they are and how they are showing up for you day to day. I didn't eat pasta or an apple for 2 years because when I was macro tracking, they used up too much of my daily allowance of carbs – I mean, apples? Seriously?! Then are you prepared to let it go? See that there is indeed an ABUNDANCE of food out there that you can have anytime. When you loosen the reigns on restriction, give up the rules, the urgency to have it now also weakens. Day 2 of #7daysforeverybody ! My go to zero point food is my big a$$ salads! Tons of volume for no points and lots of nutrition. I use chicken, tuna, salmon, eggs or ground turkey to add zero point protein and splurge my points on some ranch or olive oil for dressing!

I’M TIRED OF...⁣ **⁣ I’m tired of the unsolicited diet/fitness advice-that so many people fall victim to.⁣ **⁣ I’m tired of young girls asking me if it’s ok to “work abs” so that they can be less self conscious about their midsection; and women feeling they need to slave away on an elliptical. ⁣ **⁣ I’m tired of people feeling the need to restrict longer, harder, more excessively, because they think that MORE will equal less.⁣ **⁣ I’m tired of the fad diets, the gimmicks, the “tips, and the tricks” that people feel they need to follow in order to see the success with their body they are craving. ⁣ **⁣ You see, I’ve been there too. I used to think that all of these things would help me towards my health and fitness goals. I thought the more I did these things, the less I would struggle with “staying on track”. I thought that my eating disorder was just because I wasn’t “motivated” enough. ⁣ **⁣ These things, these things you think you’re doing right; but you see, don’t you realize you keep doing the same thing over and over and not seeing results? Don’t you see that maybe, just maybe, you saw a bit of progress, but you weren’t able to sustain it? You guys. Today has been one of those days where nothing went quite right, starting with waking up 45 minutes after my alarm went off...and ending with tech issues. Argh. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ On these days I think I want to eat. A lot of chocolate things. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 99% of the time I don't do eat over my problems anymore. But tonight, I thought...it's been an crapalicious day. I announced after supper that I was eating chocolate. Got some vague looks from the kids, like, OK...thanks for telling us. I took one bite, it was stale and yuck. In that one bite I recognized that what I needed had nothing to do with food. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But still. I looked around the kitchen for something more, cake, the candy one of the kids was eating...but food wasn't the solution. Unless you're hungry, it really never is. And so I stopped in my search for misplaced comfort. Because after the food is eaten? You're still left with the same issue you were trying to forget with the eating, along with guilt, brain fog and a gut ache. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I decided I'd put another hour of work in, and read the rest of the night. I'm about to do that now. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is the work I do with my clients every week, and I continue to do the work on myself many days; discovering what's REALLY going on behind the food and weight issue. This is deep, powerful work...and with God's grace, change IS possible. Hear that tonight, Sister. Because I'm a living example of the power of God's grace. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Onwards and upwards for tomorrow, friends. One reason why you still binge eat and why you overeat and why you eat for what seems like no reason at all except that you felt like it is because you're not honoring your commitments that you make for yourself. . You say you won't eat something, but then you do. . You say you're going to eat only one thing, but then you eat two. . You say you're going to have your cheat day (or Joy Eat!) tomorrow, but then you change your mind and have it today. . Imagine what your eating life would look like if you decided to stick to your decisions about what you are and aren't going to eat. . It would look pretty great, right?? . Now I know what you might be thinking. Easier said than done. I know, I get it. . But it's possible. . Sometimes you'll be able to do it and sometimes you won't. But at least try! . Every time you're faced with an eating decision, you have the opportunity of practicing being a person who honors themselves or a person who doesn't. . Whichever you choose more often is the one you'll get better at being. . Decide exactly what your commitment to yourself is and then put in the effort to follow through on it the same way you would do it for a friend. You wouldn't let them down so start not letting yourself down.

I have always been a person tries to squeeze ever ounce out of the day. It’s like it’s driven into my head that using every ounce of the day = being productive. Breaking up with yo-yo dieting means not taking your body so seriously. ⠀ ⠀ When I first saw thus picture I was aghast. I couldn’t believe that a had a little role at the bottom, because this was a photo shoot where I was supposed to be very lean. ⠀ ⠀ But what’s hilarious is that I was in amazing shape and looked great. All it takes is a change in posture and a camera angle and you can get a roll even on a day you also have photos with a 6 pack. ⠀ ⠀ Be careful on days you “feel fat” or don’t like how you look. This doesn’t define you. MIND TO MUSCLE CONNECTION🧠 I’ve noticed people consistently going to the gym yet wasting all their time and energy on poor reps/movements. Just swinging the weights back and forth and not really feeling the movements is without a doubt slowing down your progress. Mind to muscle connection is the most important skill to develop for anyone who goes to the gym trying to put on muscle mass. So what is it? Mind to muscle connection is when you focus on the muscle you’re working on, making sure your body and mind are connecting with the movement that is being performed. Here are some great tips to keep in mind during your next lift: 1️⃣WARM UP- always start an exercise by doing a few warm-up sets of high reps (15-20) with moderate weight. Really focus on the muscles you’re working on, squeezing and contracting as hard as possible. 2️⃣FORM > WEIGHTS- the main reason why so many people fail at mind to muscle connection is because they rather lift heavier than they are able to, which ends up sacrificing their form. Forget about how much weight you’re lifting and focus on the quality of each rep instead. 3️⃣SLOW MOVEMENTS- all my clients know that I preach “slow and controlled movements”. Take 2-3 seconds on the eccentric part of an exercise and it will feel 100x more intense. Add a pause at the top of each movement focusing on muscle contraction. These tips will completely change the intensity of your workouts! MY TOP SECRETS FOR A FLAT BELLY! Most people think that in order to get a flat belly you need to do hundreds of crunches and never-ending diets, and although that might help burn some fat, if you’re not taking proper care of your gut, you might never get that flat belly you desire. I like to call the gut “my body’s second brain” 🧠 With the variety of things that go through our digestive systems each day, it may seem impossible to get it back in balance for ultimate health. Not to worry, with a bit of planning and time, it is very possible to completely restore your gastrointestinal system, which can have major positive effects on your entire body, from mood, to energy levels, to your immune system. What you can start doing RIGHT NOW: ✨BE MINDFUL- pay attention to the foods you eat and how they make you feel, this will give you a much clearer idea of what foods to eliminate from your diet. ✨PORTION CONTROL- your body doesn’t like feeling too full and it will respond negatively to it. How I feel before I workout vs how I feel after! {Swipe left} ____ Comment below if you feel me on this. When was the last time you worked out because you looked forward to the positive after effects vs using it to punish yourself for all the “wrong things” you put into your body. The after effects like happier, more calm, focused, confident, hopeful, stronger, that feeling that you can take over the world! Movement is powerful and can be a useful tool if you look at it from the perspective of helping you vs punishing yourself. ___ Not too long ago, I would overeat and binge on food as a way to cope with things going down in my life. My body would feel so full of food and my mind so full of guilt and shame after that I would immediately want to “UN-do” the effects of what I had done. I used working out as a way to basically repent for my mess up. I would guilt myself to get there and every rep I lifted or step I ran was loaded with negative thoughts berating me for “being bad.” This cycle continued. For years. Without me attempting to shift my mindset. And so no progress was made. I was trapped in a vicious cycle or thoughts and behaviors! ___ What got me to shift? When I experienced true calm and relief after taking a yoga class one random night. Maybe it was the right circumstances, maybe I was in the right place to receive the message and wake up to how much happier I felt post workout- not out of punishment but just because. Since then I stopped using exercise as a punishment, or so that I could have a justification to eat something I “shouldn’t”, or makeup for a big meal. And this is where life started to change for me.... I even stopped using exercise to ONLY lose weight and for aesthetics like gaining muscle. Movement whether walking, lifting weights, kickboxing, dancing, whatever I chose to do was to serve the best of me. For the future vision of myself I wanted in reality. The version that may not have existed in the moment but that I was committed to becoming. (See my post earlier today on this!). Movement became my mental health dose of medicine. And once I shifted this in my mind, I have never looked back. #movementismedicine

What is Strength Through Food Freedom?❤️ ** In 2015, I aggressively took part in a “weight cut” for a powerlifting competition. ** 2015, Julia- wouldn’t eat what her parents would make her for dinner at family dinners, and would make her mom make her bland chicken while everyone else ate an amazing home cooked meal. —I’m sorry, mom. I’m sorry, for fighting with you at Uncle Giuseppes’, that day, when they didn’t have anything “I could eat”. ** 2015, Julia- binge ate Oreos and would then throw them up in the shower. To then later, order a salad with only chicken when her bf and her would go out for dinner. How dare I eat anything else, right? ** 2015, Julia- cried herself to sleep for being so hungry, but would then binge eat PB while her bf slept. ** 2015, Julia- life revolved what she could eat and would she couldn’t eat. ** Lastly, 2015 Julia- WISHED for normalcy, and a day where her ED wasn’t perpetuated by her never ending obsession over food and the gym. ** 2019 Julia-I am healthy, I am strong AF, I don’t say no to foods, I don’t feel the need to punish myself with binge eating and purging, or over exercising. I no longer start over every day wishing for normalcy. ** I will never go back to restricting like I did in the past. I’ll never go back missing out on life because of fear of food. I will NEVER go back to the girl from 2015-and even years prior who struggled, over and over, and over again. ** Strength Through Food Freedom- is my movement that I believe so passionately in. So this week I’ve felt a bit run down, my tummy’s not right and I don’t know whether it’s a bug, something I’ve eaten or just stress/anxiety related IBS symptoms. With that and other things stressing me out at the moment, my disappointment of a gain (I know it was only 0.5 lb so this is rediculous but it bothered me when I’d worked so hard) yesterday has affected my mood today. I started off well with my usual weetabix and banana for breakfast (healthy extras) and chose a halloumi and avocado salad whilst eating out with a friend for a catch up. However, as we’d planned to have a little treat (a piece of rainbow cake) after that, the sweet tooth in me said sod it. My friend had very kindly got me some gingerbread fudge and gingerbread matchmakers (...I know! 🤤) as she knows I love gingerbread and I couldn’t resist opening the fudge when I got back to the office at work. Putting them to the side after a few pieces, telling myself to leave the rest for another day, I slowly got through my work, picking at the fudge til it was gone 🙁 did it make me feel better or cheer me up? Did it bollocks. My head said ‘you’ve ruined it now, you might as well open the matchmakers too’ but I haven’t and have shoved them in a cupboard, still sealed. It just proves that although I’m motivated, positive and losing weight, we all have our shitty days or weeks and this week is mine. I do feel guilty, even though I know I shouldn’t because I could have chosen a lot worse meals than a salad for a start! So yeah...that’s where I am at. Binge eating and emotional eating doesn’t just disappear with a little bit of weightloss. We are NOT born HATING our body... This is a learned thought, which then becomes a belief BECAUSE the thought gets repeated over and over. This learned thought could've come from mirroring your mother's relationship with her body, or your sisters... or even from your girlfriend's at school who started to make comments about certain body parts so then you started to internalize your own. Whatever the case is... it's all LEARNED and what I uncover with my clients is that most of these beliefs aren't THEIR OWN and they act in self destructive ways when they attach to these beliefs. The good news? We can UNLEARN these thought.. these beliefs AND further more, we can change them! I ask you to think about these questions.. 1. Where did I pick up this belief? HOW TO REDEFINE YOUR BODY IMAGE⁣⁣🙋🏻‍♀️ **⁣⁣ Raise your hand if you’ve ever been personally victimized by your body image?⁣⁣ **⁣⁣ You know what I mean…saying things like;⁣⁣ **⁣⁣ “I feel so fluffy today”.⁣⁣ **⁣⁣ “ Ugh, why are my arms so flabby?”⁣⁣ **⁣⁣ “I’m a stuffed sausage and I look like a whale!”.⁣⁣ **⁣⁣ “Why is my nose so big? Delete that picture, I look horrible”.⁣⁣ **⁣⁣ Body image is a complex thing, but do you ever stop and realize how mean you are to yourself when you say those things?⁣⁣ **⁣⁣ I’ve talked to so many women, and they tell me how they look in the mirror, and all they see is their body and their unhappieness with it. It ruins their day, their self- esteem, and even can impact both intimate and non-intimate relationships with other people.⁣⁣ **⁣⁣ My view on this, is that it’s ok to want to change your body, while trying to still embrace that what you look like, doesn’t define who you are.⁣⁣ **⁣⁣ It’s also ok to embrace whatever season your body is currently in, and understand that this may be where you are the healthiest both PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY.⁣ **⁣⁣ My biggest tips for improving your body image:⁣⁣ **⁣⁣ 1: Stop comparing yourself to others, and do not compare your current body to how you may have looked a few years ago. Like I said, learn to understand what season of life you currently are in.⁣⁣ **⁣⁣ 2: Understand that your weight, even if it’s your “goal” number, isn’t the only way to measure your health and how you perceive your body. For instance, when I was 132 pounds, I was miserable, and my every waking thought was what I could eat, and what I couldn’t eat, followed by conspiring in my head, on when my next binge would be. Now, at 150 pounds, I have a healthy mind in a healthy body and truly know what #FoodFreedom is.⁣⁣ **⁣⁣ 3: STOP calling yourself “body shaming” things. Like “I’m a whale, stuffed sausage, or whatever your term of choice is. I learned that when I stopped calling myself these things on off days, I started to develop a healthier relationship with my mind and body, overall. So, why are weight loss resolutions so unreliable? ⠀ ⠀ For starters - Resolutions are about actionable surface level items, like diet and exercise. And they rely on willpower to make them work.⠀ ⠀ But at the end of the day, lasting change doesn't come from outside actions alone. I believed for 14 years that I wasn’t good enough until I lost weight. I wasn’t happy enough until I lost weight. I wasn’t this enough or that enough. I wasted those years being a diet obsessed insecure individual who suffered from low self esteem, feelings of inadequacy and debilitating anxiety with panic attacks thrown in for good measure. I was hungry for so much more in my life, yet I didn’t realise it at the time nor did I have any idea what I was hungry for. : I thought food was my problem. I thought the size, shape and weight of my body was the barrier keeping me from my happiness. I thought my lack of willpower was my issue. : I thought my inability to stick to plans, programs and regimes was the reason I felt like I did. None of that was true though for as it turned out I’d later discover that my struggles with food were symptomatic, symbolic and metaphorical. I had a hungry soul which left me starving for much of my adolescence and my 20s and I didn’t even know it. All I knew was that I wanted to lose weight in the belief I would feel better about myself and then live would improve. : When I speak to women about my story, it shocks me how frequently they nod along with compassion and understanding as this isn't just MY story, it's YOUR story and OUR story. : This is what is happening to millions of women daily across the world.
