“When we are experiencing it, loss often feels like an anomaly, a disruption in the usual order of things. In fact, though, it is the usual order of things. Entropy, mortality, extinction: the entire plan of the universe consists of losing, and life amounts to a reverse savings account in which we are eventually robbed of everything. / Disappearance reminds us to notice, transience to cherish, fragility to defend. Loss is a kind of external conscience, urging us to make better use of our finite days.” -Kathryn Schulz, Losing Streak

#BookReview .. .. .. Godspeed, Casey Legler .. .. .. Is this one considered sports literature? An addiction memoir? A piece about mental health? Try all of the above! This intensely poetic and heartbreaking memoir was brutal but also beautiful. I was not altogether entranced by the style of writing as I did feel like it was fragmented, but I also felt like it was a testament to the way Legler was feeling. .. .. .. During her swimming career, Legler was essentially used; used for sex, her ability to obtain drugs, and her strong swimming athleticism. This led her coaches to turn a blind eye to Legler's declining mental health. It felt like Legler lived a life where she was just going through the motions. From swimming practice to school; from France to the US for training. There were a few times where I was surprised by the progression of this memoir, for example, when Legler glossed over her experience at the Olympics. I felt like this would be the climax of the story, but it was only quickly touched on. Probably because it was just another day in her fragmented life. .. .. .. At the beginning of the story, Legler indulges that she was diagnosed with autism as an adult. This admission makes total sense, as she repeatedly mentions her issues with light and sound and her inability to form deep connections. .. .. .. All in all, I did feel like this one was all over the place, but I still somewhat enjoyed it. Rating: 3.83☆s Haha, I'm a weirdo. I felt like it deserved less than a 4, but more than a 3.75. So there ya go. .. .. .. Any suggestions about which memoir I should read next? .. .. .. .. .. .. @AtriaBooks @SimonAndSchuster #bookflatlay #BELLETRIST #BelletristBabe #BelletristPick #currentlyreading #currentread #memoir #nonfiction #nonfictionpick #CaseyLegler #Godspeed #bookish #bookishlove #bookworm #bibliophile #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #igreads #bookaholic #ilovebooks #ilovetoread #enjoyreading #booknerd #booknerdigans #bookgeek #bibliophile #booknerd #book #books #bookaholic #NoseStuckInABook #homeschool

“But I never did try hard to please my mother. In fact, I never tried hard to please anybody at all... now I only try hard to please myself. That is all that matters here. That is the secret thing I found.” - - Homesick For Another World is the first short story collection I can genuinely say I enjoyed. No one writes unlikeable characters like Ottessa Moshfegh, and I think that’s what makes her work so special. You can see that some of the people in her stories are doing horrible things, weird things, but somehow you still like them. There is something so human about all her stories, full of dark, casual cruelty, and undirected pitfalls of fate. Reading her work puts you in that weird time warp you get when you’re on planes, where you’re not really anywhere in particular and you’re moving but it doesn’t feel like it, and when it’s over you’re somewhere completely different to where you started. Love love loved it, even tho I hate planes 🤷🏻‍♀️

I love food and I like cooking and reading is, very obviously, my jam — but I think one of the things I love the most about this stunning cookery tome by Jason Atherton is actually the artwork by Ben Ashton? - No, but seriously, this is a glorious thing. Atherton has a lovely voice, and his foodie creations are heralding of the passionate producers he works with. I’ve heard great things about Pollen Street Social, and if this cookbook is anything to go by, it’s easy to see why people rave about it. Review’s up on Oddments. 👍🏼

Oy! What a week. We’ve been having very important conversations on Bookstagram this week. I haven’t chimed in publicly, but I’ve had lengthy conversations with @thestackspod, @simoneandherbooks, and @definitelyra who were gracious enough to guide me in some areas where I felt stuck and answer my questions. You all didn’t have to do that, but you did. Thank you. I am sitting with some of this. Digesting it. Doing a lot of introspection and educating myself. I think we could all use a bit of that instead of living in reactivity. . Because this has been a rough couple days for personal reasons I don’t feel like sharing yet, it’s just a simple reminder that you never know what someone’s going through. Let’s have a little compassion for one another. Our screens are paper thin and not nearly a full representation of a whole person. 💕 . I’m not going to review this book, but I did love it, and I highly recommend you read it.

I received The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin as a Christmas gift from my wonderful friend @bibliothea and I've actually read it already. The story is about the life's of the Gold siblings after they visit a fortune-teller who can tell you the exact date of your death ☠️ . I gave it 4 ⭐ as I did quite enjoy it, though for some reason I expected magic in this story. It is however more about family bonds and the impact a prediction about the length of your life can have on the life you lead. I also liked that the book was sectioned into 4 parts, each representing the life and death of one of the siblings. It was a thought-provoking read for sure and apart from the first section's writing (from Simon's pov) I did enjoy the writing overall. . . . #books #bookish #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookworm #bookaddict #booksofig #bookcommunity #bookobsessed #bibliophile #belletrist #read #readersofinsta #reading #reader #igreads #instabooks #instaread #theimmortalists #chloebenjamin #contemporary

I am excited to announce that this month The Book Club will be reading The Dreamers by Karen Thompson Walker! 😴💡💭 The Dreamers is a story of an ordinary town transformed by a mysterious illness that triggers perpetual sleep and has been named one of the most anticipated books of 2019! If you want to read along with us and discuss what you thought of the book, use the link in my bio to RSVP for our February meet up! 📧 at Denton, Texas

@bookishmadeleine

@randomhouse #partner ✨ THE DREAMERS by Karen Thompson Walker was book number 3 of 2019, and it was everything I wanted and more. I loved it. • In this little college town, an epidemic breaks out in which people fall asleep without any indication that they will wake up, and during their sleep, they dream. As readers, we get to watch the sleeping/dreaming virus overtake the town, and the ways in which society at large responds (is it fake news? Is it being blown out of proportion? Crisis actors? Government conspiracy? Etc.). . I found the style of storytelling to be incredibly engaging - the narrative voice was disconnected in a way that made it feel as though you’re kind of floating in and out of households and relationships, and the result was this dreamy, sleepy narrative that was eerie, mesmerizing, and that echoed the content of the novel in really fun and interesting ways. I felt for all of the characters, and kept on thinking something along the lines of, “but surely this family will be ok.” Overall this was a really quick read for me and I really really enjoyed it. • It came out this past Tuesday, and is the @belletrist book club pick! • Have you read it? What did you think? at Blue Bottle Coffee

“No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.” 📖 #bookstagram #bookquotes #bookobsessed #bookish #bookworm #bookaholic #bookhoarder #booknerd #booklover #bookmarks #parisianstyle #parisienne #parisianchic #hauntingofhillhouse #hohh #shirleyjackson #belletrist #belletristbabe #currentlyreading #readingtime📖 #bookaddict #bookstagrammer #quotes #quotestagram #readingislife #wednesdaywisdom #wednesdaymotivation

“- Korede, I killed him. ” Family Dysfunction. Familial Obligation. Love. Braithwaite has managed to pack quite the punch in 226 pages, delivering a complex novella that is alluring and darkly funny. The short, sharp chapters put me off at first but Braithwaite’s fleshed out fascinating characters that held strong and carried the story well.
