I present to you, the last book that made me cry. @rebeccamakkai has written a beautiful, heart-wrenching chronicle of the Chicago AIDS crisis in the 1980s and it’s impact on a group of gay male friends. This is some seriously great storytelling. I can see why it’s a contender for the National Book Award. I think part of the reason why the book felt so special to me was that I could visualize it unfolding because it takes place here in Chicago. Makkai mentions the beloved @unabridgedbookstore at one point, and Sidetrack, a dance club in Boystown that’s still around (and very fun!) ⁣ ⁣ This is the kind of book you let out a long sigh after finishing. The last quarter of the book had the tears flowing. A particular chapter, starting on page 334, really devastated me. If you have read the book, I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. ⁣ ⁣ Many of the stories we hear about the AIDS crisis take place in San Francisco or New York City, and we don’t realize the devastation that really did occur all around the country, and world, at that time. If you’re curious about learning more about this time, I highly recommend the documentary titled We Were Here. at Chicago, Illinois

I received an ARC for Furyborn by Claire Legrand a couple months ago in a fairyloot box. I was quite excited for it as the story sounds mega interesting and also innovative. As you can imagine, I was highly disappointed when I started reading it and discovered that the story was very, very predictable. I also hated the characters and the trials that one queen had to go through were extremely repetitive. The writing was plain and not very engaging, I found and so it baffles me how pretty much all the booktubers I've seen talk about this book keep on raving about how much they liked this book. To me it was pretty awful, disappointing, formulaic, dull and predictable. I literally wasn't surprised by any of the "plot twists" at all. And so I can say that I would never recommend this book to anyone as it would just be a complete waste of time and I don't get the hype whatsoever! . . . #books #bookish #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #bookobsessed #booklover #bookworm #bookaddict #bibliophile #belletrist #read #readit #reading #igreads #instaread #instareads #instabooks #furyborn #clairelegrand

Even though I started a new read, my thoughts keep circling back to STAY WITH ME which I have finished over the weekend! • “I did not feel better. I would not feel better for a very long time. Already, I was coming undone, like a hastily tied scarf coming loose, on the ground before the owner is aware of it.” • Yejide and Akin met in university, fell in love, got married, and were committed to a monogamous relationship. But four years into their marriage, Yejide is still not pregnant and is the target of a lot of pressure from both of their families. They consult fertility doctors and Yejide even seeks out a healer in the backcountry. But behind her back, Akin’s family has taken matters into their own hands and suddenly appear at their home with what has been Akin’s second wife for months. She is supposed to be the “cure” of the so far childless marriage. Hurt and embarrassed Yejide now makes it her top priority to get pregnant because she believes that’s the only way to safe her marriage. But things never turn out the way we want them to… • I listened to this one on audio and Adjoa Andoh does an amazing job narrating the story with different Nigerian accents. I felt that this connected me even more with the story. At first all my sympathies were with Yejide who has suffered emotionally and mentally. The societal expectations of what it means to be a woman in Nigeria or what defines the worth of a woman are breaking her. But throughout the story we also learn why Akin did the things he did and my heart broke a little bit for him as well because he had equally unrealistic expectations placed upon him. The sometimes well-meant intentions of both Yejide and Akin to pursue what is defined as the societal norm create a vortex of destruction around them that leaves many people hurt. I’m so impressed that this story is only 260 pages long and packed with cultural insight, the story of a marriage, and great character development. Would highly recommend this, especially on audio! • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ • #ayobamiadebayo #staywithme #charandbooksreviews #belletrist #diversespines

If you have been following me for a while or know me personally, one thing is for sure: my love for books. I particularly have been into all the #bookmovieadaptations this year! I am most definitely that weirdo (or maybe cool person if you are bookworm like me? 😜) that needs to read the book before I see the movie, if I know it is originally a novel. It seems like every year there are more and more of these adaptations, hey it’s because literature is cool my dudes! Some of my favorites this year have been A Wrinkle in Time, Crazy Rich Asians, Sharp Objects, and of course the super amazing + sweet To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. I read this book a few years ago right after I graduated high school and #JennyHan, man she really resonates with my soul. This adaptation honestly lived up to my expectations more than almost every other movie one I have seen! So I decided to re-read this amazing book series and dream of #PeterKavinsky again 😚 have you had any favorite book-movie adaptions or any you really wanted to read recently? (I personally have been dying to read #Annihilation before I see it!)

Happy #BannedBooksWeek ‼️ These are some books from my shelves that have been challenged over the years for their content. ⁣ ⁣ This week is about celebrating the right to have stories told and our freedom to read. Access to information is one of the hallmarks of American society - it’s something we pride ourselves in. However, even in 2018, we still see texts being challenged that contain content that makes some people/organizations feel uncomfortable, such as LGBTQ characters, poverty, racial issues, crude language, mental health, religion, and morally questionable decisions. ⁣ ⁣ For many people these challenged stories are a lifeline - a way to see themselves and their lives represented. Many of us may feel like we have the freedom to tell our stories, but it’s important we stand up for those who are still being oppressed, still being silenced. ⁣ ⁣ So, let’s celebrate this week by sharing, buying, and reading the stories that are bravely telling their truths!⁣ ⁣ What are some of your favorite #bannedbooks ? at Chicago, Illinois

So I read We Were Liars about a year ago, as the plot sounded mysterious and @bibliothea actually recommended it to me. I enjoyed the writing massively and so I read the book in one sitting! The twist, however, wasn't completely surprising to me, as the plot reminded me of a movie I once saw which had sort of the same twist. Nonetheless, I loved it and would for sure recommend it! Also I got the deluxe edition from Amazon and it was even signed, which I didn't know when I ordered it, so that's always a nice surprise 😻 . Reading and life update// As I said before I was in hospital this last week and I was actually released today which I'm so happy about! I managed to read Before The Devil Breaks You by Libba Bray whilst being in hospital and oh my... this series just keeps on getting better and better, which is rare for a series I find. Usually at least one of the books (mostly the second one) isn't as great as the others, but I haven't experienced that kind of disappointment with either the Diviners series of the Gemma Doyle trilogy. I'm honestly so excited for this series to continue and I hope the title and release date will be announced soon! 🔮 . . . #books #bookish #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #bookaddict #booklover #bookworm #bookobsessed #belletrist #bibliophile #igreads #read #readit #reading #instabooks #instareads #instaread #wewereliars #elockhart #libbabray #beforethedevilbreaksyou #gemmadoyle #diviners #agreatandterriblebeauty

Done with Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn! 🔪 - - - This story is about Camille Preaker, a journalist who works for the small newspaper in Chicago. She gets sent on a case that happened in her home town of Wind Gap, Missouri. It’s a brutal case of dead young girls with all of their teeth pulled out. As Camille dives further into the mystery she find out a lot more than she intended. - - - YES!! This was everything I want in a crime mystery because it was ACTUALLY A MYSTERY. I don’t know about any of you but I swear I can always call the ending 50 pages in usually for these kind of books. But not with this one!! I had a SLIGHT clue but loved the twist at the ending! If you haven’t read this, you totally should! Now I wasn’t to watch the HBO series! And I just love all of Gillian Flynn’s books and need her to hurry and write more! 😈 - - - HAVE YOU READ THIS BOOK?! LETS TALK ABOUT BOOKS! ✨

@cassies_bookshelf

This was my third time reading Virginie Despentes and it was exactly what I expected: sexy, darkly funny, and covertly smart. Pretty Things sets forth the quest to become the perfect woman by twins Claudine and Pauline. Each twin represents two feminine parables women so often find themselves trapped in. Claudine, the promiscuous, desirable woman eager to employ her sexuality and good looks to get ahead in life, at whatever cost. Pauline, the shoddy, but secretly talented woman who sneers at Claudine’s lifestyle and complicity in her own degradation. After Claudine’s sudden suicide however, Pauline makes a snap decision to take on her sister’s identity, and begins to lapse into the life Claudine once inhabited. Slowly, Pauline finds herself buried in primal desires to please and sees how easily one can be enticed to conform to what society and men ask of you. ⁣ ⁣ What I love about Despentes’ writing is she always makes you question some ugly truths about yourself. With Pretty Things, I thought about the ways I engage in performative femininity everyday without even realizing it. ⁣ ⁣ The novel was originally written in 1998 and translated this year from French, but it’s subject matter is still so relevant. Despentes is vulgar, tough, and not for the faint of heart. If you really want to have your world rocked, read King Kong Theory. I talked about that book earlier this summer, you can scroll down my feed and read a little more about it if you’d like! at Chicago, Illinois

@gwenhudack

I remember when I was younger, my parents always used to tell me “Enjoy your youth. Don’t grow up too fast. When you’re older life is going to fly by faster than you want it to.” This couldn’t be more true as I sit here and reflect back on the last 9 months of my life. It’s hard to believe how many highs and lows I’ve experienced in such a short amount of time. Sometimes I feel like I haven’t even had the proper time to process it all. But, that’s life and life happens fast. You learn to go with the flow and look for the beauty in certain situations. I’ll admit, I sometimes wonder if that’s even possible with certain things that I have been or am going through. If I have learned anything over these last few whirlwind months, it’s that I have come to truly love and appreciate the person I am today. With every season that comes and goes, we are all evolving into another version of ourselves. We learn what makes fuels our soul, what or who no longer deserves our time, and we open ourselves to new beginnings. Most importantly, we learn about the strength each and every one of us has inside. That I think is one of the most soul awakening things we can experience. It’s quite magical if you think about it. ✨✨✨

I finished THE OPTIMIST’S DAUGHTER by Eudora Welty yesterday. It’s a book full of beautiful writing, the nuance of ordinary life, and soul searching that encapsulates the south so vividly. “The Optimist’s Daughter” by Eudora Welty, while seemingly simple at the outset, is beautifully written and incredibly poignant. . This short novel follows Laurel McKelva Hand, a widow who returns to her Mississippi hometown after the death of her father. Laurel clashes with her stepmother, Fay, who is younger than her, and who seems astoundingly detached from all that is humane and all that really matters in life. Fay is vanity and selfishness personified, and is -in my opinion- truly awful. I appreciate, however, when Laurel finds Fay asleep and thinks to herself, “Is there any sleeping person you can be entirely sure you have not misjudged?” remarking on how seeing someone sleep is to see them temporarily stripped of their indiscretions, appearing as nothing other than simply a person. . I also really love how Welty describes grief through Laurel; how it can sit for awhile before eventually pouring over its invisible edge, flooding you. . No spoilers, but the best bit has to do with a handcrafted breadboard. . I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys short, perceptive stories. If you like Southern settings and/or quietly emotional reads, you’ll like this one. . Quote I loved: “She was sent to sleep under a velvety cloak of words, richly patterned and stitched with gold, straight out of a fairy tale, while they went reading on into her dreams.” . . . . . #alfiesbookclub #bookreviews #bookstagram #igreads #booknerdigans #readersofinstagram #postitfortheaesthetic #autumnaesthetic #autumncolors #bookblogger #bookflatlay #flatlayforever #bibliophile #mybookishfeatures #bookstafam #bookstagramfeatures #belletrist #belletristbooks #currentlyreading #alwaysreading #prettybooks #bookworm

Happy Friday readers! • Even though the month started off really slow, I finally secured some reading time and finished The Incendiaries. • Book review: The Incendiaries centers around three people attending an elitist University in New England. Will, who previously attended Bible college but now broke with his faith, is in financial troubles trying to keep up with the lifestyle of his rich classmates. Phoebe has been a talented pianist in her childhood and focused all of her efforts on excelling at it until her mother dies in a car accident. Since then, Phoebe has lost her focus and purpose in life and indulges in a lot of reckless behaviour. “I ate pain. I swilled tears. If I could take enough in, I’d have no space left to fit my own [pain].” Will and Phoebe start a relationship and Will being the more committed one, wants to alleviate Phoebe’s suffering. “But I’m an immigrant, Phoebe said. Immigrants don’t believe in therapists. The Korean’s I’ve known would judge it to be a failure of will, the kind of thing that happens to other ethnicities: it’s like being lazy or unfilial.” Unsure how to go about her pain Phoebe connects with a religious group on campus that is led by the charismatic John Leal. Things start to escalate when both Will and Phoebe commit hurtful actions driven by pain and fear of loss. • I alternatively felt intrigued and thrown off by the prose of this book. There was so much more said beyond the actual words but also an overuse of verbed inanimate objects. It was also difficult to identify with the characters, as the POVs of Phoebe and John Leal are very short and somewhat unspecific. The story is mainly carried forward through Will’s narrative but he is not the supporting and invested boyfriend we are first led to believe. Nevertheless, the story was fascinating and definitely picked up pace from page 50 onward. It was almost like I knew something bad would happen but I couldn’t look away. This read was a dark and mesmerizing experience for me. 4/5 ⭐️ • Have you read this one? • #rokwon #theincendiaries #belletrist #saltwaterreads #booksandbeans #booksandcoffee #readwithsj #charandbooksreviews

Making the time to read books I normally would read is helping my writing for sure. It’s also helping me take the time to sit in a quiet spot - no tv, no podcasts, just reading. Enjoying a cup of tea and oatmeal during morning reading. Curling up in my blankets when I read before bed. My goal has been 1 book a month which isn’t much but it’s felt like a great journey of words. . . Where’s your favourite spot to read? What are you reading now? at Toronto, Ontario

💥💥💥/ 5 stars • “She’d longed to escape; as I had, but here I was, still so God-haunted. I walked on blackened palm fronds, a tangled pile; I imagined lifting up the lush jumble of leaves and finding it was Phoebe’s hair, disheveled with morning. [...] I’d tease her out of bed since, having had the night apart, I’d want Phoebe with me again.” • The Incendiaries is a short novel about two people with two separate obsessions. Will (white) is obsessed with Phoebe. Phoebe (Korean) is obsessed with a religious cult. Though, I liked the story and Kwon’s vibrant, thought-provoking writing, I found it difficult to follow who was speaking. I think this story would have benefited from 100 more pages as it tries to fit so much in such a small book. Still unsure, I’ll be pondering the message of this story in days to come. It may just be that I need to reread it from the beginning to grasp it all. • #bookreview #theincendiaries #cultshit #crimefiction #religion #koreanauthor #readmorewomen #readdiversebooks #rokwon #riverheadbooks #stopdropandread #readingwomen #bookish #bookworm #bookstagram #bibliophile #seattleblogger #bookquotes #getlit #belletrist #belletristbabe at Seattle, Washington

Sick and trying to cure myself with a book and tea 🙇🏻‍♀️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I picked up The Optimist's Daughter today because it is the @belletrist book pick of the month. I've read Welty's memoir-style One Writer's Beginnings and enjoyed her style. I'm about a third of the way through and I'm very curious what will happen next. I was supposed to be napping, but I haven't been able to put this book down. I guess that's a sign? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Are you reading along this month with #belletrist book club? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📚 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📚 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bibliophile #bookish #booknerd #bookaddict #currentlyreading #amreading #igreads #epicreads #bookshelfporn #bookhaul #library #reader #bookstack #igbooks #bookshelves #alwaysreading #readeverywhere #readeverything #bookstore #booktography #instabooks #bookstagramfeature #readingtime #eudorawelty #theoptimistsdaughter
