In my latest @medium article I explore how art can provide inspiration for prosthetic limbs. I’ve live with a prosthetic leg since I was 2 years old. I can’t even remember my life without one. Yet what is missing in the prosthetic world is an opportunity to allow prosthesis wearers a creative outlet through their prosthetic. There are organisations and charities that are starting to make this creativity happen, but we need it to go into hospitals and clinics. My body image story shortened♡ I have was never happy with my body yes you might see me as thin but what I thought was damaging. I have struggled with body image and disordered eating and obsessing over my body for years. From trying diets I found on the internet to 30 day challenges to not eating I tried it all. I quickly become obsessed with the number my scales showed me every morning, battling my self-esteem morning and night. I never used to be the type of girl to wear a full face of makeup but now you will never see me without it. Spending money on nails, hair and alterations to myself in hope of looking nicer, never full satisfied with myself. But the main part of this story is that I am overcoming this body image issue slowly. More of my college memories have to do with numbers on an elliptical than nights out with friends. I told myself many things to get through the runs, but the biggest, most repeated lie was: You're not tired. You're weak. That was me: weak in willpower, weak in body, weak in mind. I honed my ability to ignore my body and its cries for rest, for food, for mercy by increasing the pressure, week after week. I ran through bleeding toes. I ran (hunched over) through hunger pangs. I even ran between the bathroom and the treadmill, through stomach cramps from the laxative pills I popped at all hours of the day. —————————————————— I knew something had to change or I will end up dead. I started A weightlifting program, hoping it can strengthen my body. I remember squatting for the first time, my muscles just stopped working, and I actually had to listen to my body. It was the only time in my life I've been happy about failing. But the truly amazing thing about lifting was that it made me finally listen to my hunger cues, both appetite and cravings. The truth is that exercise eases my relationship with food, for worse and for better. Working up a physical hunger instead of working out to suppress it helped me accept the fact that, yes, my body actually demanded food — whether or not my mind deemed it deserving. I had only one option: to finally fuel my body. ———————————————————- I may never undo the damage I inflicted on my body. But I'll keep walking through the gym doors because, for the first time in almost 10 years, working out isn't about buying minutes of freedom from food guilt. Self Love 🌸 ////////// Something I struggle with is self love and I don’t just mean loving your body. But loving your mind, your personality and all the little things that make yourself you. I started smoking last year, it was a coping mechanism and I admit it’s horrendous for my body and I wake up everyday telling myself “I’m gonna quit today”. But that day hasn’t been coming, and today it’s arrived and something has clicked in my mind that that isn’t me loving myself or loving my body and what my body does for me on a daily basis to survive. //////// Self love is like a school, it’s a learning process. But once it comes you fight for everything you believe in.. and what I believe in is myself and my capabilities 🌸💓 ////////// So yeah, I spend a lot of time in the gym, I spend a lot of time doing things for myself these days because happiness and positivity is all I want from my life. Something I’ve found to be a great tool when I’m struggling with bad body image is reality testing. 🙌🏼 It’s pretty much in the name but it involves taking a belief you hold, applying it to a real life setting and seeing what happens. ‼️ Example - ‘if I put on weight, that is unhealthy’. Reality testing this would involve asking yourself ‘have I actually experienced any health related impacts?’, ‘what about the people I know in larger bodies who are fitter than I am?’, ‘what about the people I know with eating disorders who are skinnier than I am?’ and ‘why am I having this thought?’. 🤔 Another example ‘you fight like a girl’ - ‘have you ever watched a women’s UFC fight? or a mother protecting her child?’ 🦁 Reflecting on thoughts, feelings and societal standards can help you realise that sometimes they’re actually just bullshit 🤷🏼‍♀️ • #bodypositive #bodyimage #bodyinspiration #healthylifestyle #healthateverysize #curvy #feminist #curvywomen #underwear #selfcare #selflove #healthy #antidiet #bodyneutrality #beauty #confidence #acceptance #bodyappreciation #celebratemysize #weightstigma #realitytesting

Biographical notes Bice Benvenuto is a psychoanalyst practicing in London, a founding member of the CFAR (Centre for Freudian Analysis and Research Center), director of Associazione Dolto in Rome and founder of the first Maison Verte in the United Kingdom. For many years she has been visiting professor at the New School of Social Research (NY) and Florida Atlantic University and has lectured extensively in the UK and abroad on psychoanalysis, female sexuality, child analysis and literature. She was a member of the European School of Psychoanalysis and the Freuduan Field in Paris. Mother Nature knows no difference between the past, present and the future. It simply knows the rhythms of the Pancha Mahabhutas; the five great elements of air, ether, fire, water, earth. To our bodies - we relive that thought, that emotional rollercoaster, all while you're having a little daydream (usually around peak Vata-time at 3pm!).⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ So ask yourself //⁠⠀ What are you inflicting your body to by not being present?⁠⠀ What thoughts, feelings, emotions are you subjecting yourself to unknowingly?⁠⠀ What could their impact be?⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Ayurveda truly is in everything, so I've been delving into the impact of emotional ama/toxins in light of this theme. Because what we digest goes beyond food - we are constantly digesting the impressions and energies that we're exposed to in our external environment. People - good and bad. Places - good and bad. Love it or hate it but your body is your body.No one else’s,its you and where you live...so why do we often make it a war zone? I am so very guilty of hating my body,blaming it for not being ‘perfect’ or how I strive it to be. Believe me I try,lord knows I try and slowly it’s getting there but the funny thing about ‘perfection’ is that it’s never ending and doesn’t really exist -and I will tell you why. Its subjective. How you view the world and indeed your body depends on lots of different things but mostly it’s your mindset. A perfect body - to me - is a healthy one that your comfortable in.Cant get much more perfect than that 🙏

Let’s talk about post competition life 👙 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I love doing bikini competitions but it’s been a year since I done a show and I won’t be competing till next year. I have seen my body at its most extreme and after not competing for a little while I struggle with body dysmorphia. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When I was on prep I never hung out with friends, didn’t want to go to work events or happy hour. I was so worried about temptation. But now I have the freedom to live my life, go to brunch or have an extra glass of wine at the end of a stressful day! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🍎This is something I will have to continue to work on my really changing my mindset with food has been big! Today I am feeling confident in myself. Who I am as a person and in my looks. I bought myself some clothes and took photos in them for fun and to boost my confidence and did some reading and TV watching. I’m happy However, I wanted to share the ups and downs of life and mental illness and show how quickly things change. The first two images made me feel even more confident and happy .... and then in trying to take another my mood shifted. Looking at the last photo my happiness diminished. After a period of self doubt and hate and sadness I realised that that’s my body. Yes I do have a filter for the colour effect but that is my body with tummy rolls and cellulite and thick thighs. There’s no point in hiding it from the world because that’s what everyone else sees anyway. I can edit what others see in real life when I am in front of them so why should I online. I see myself as all those negative but I am both the positives and negatives of all photos of me and that’s beautiful because I am human. I have parts of my body that I don’t like and others I love, i have crazy mood changes like a normal person and I have chaotic damaging thought pattern like someone suffering from a mental illness, I can be both beautiful and not looking my best and happy and sad all at once and that’s the chaotic beauty of being human.

People used to ask me “how to lose weight” and how they could "get into shape". In particular, new mums would ask about this. . However, since shifting my focus from aesthetics to health, I have been getting asked something different. . People now ask me, how to be healthy? And how to be happy? . It's clear from what I post that I am now all about promoting a healthy mind, healthy body and the importance of having a healthy relationship with our bodies. So when people ask me about these things, here's what I say: . 1. Exercise and good nutrition are powerful tools that you can use to create a healthy mind and body, particularly if you implement them into your life in a consistent and sustainable way. Make them a part of your lifestyle. However, try not to become obsessed - because this can become unhealthy. Find your balance. . Your best shot at being consistent (but not obsessive) is if your actions come from a place of love, rather than a place of hatred. Remember that your body is amazing and that it deserves to be loved. . 2. Your body is unique. Your ‘imperfections’ are what make you, you! Recognise that your body is amazing because of everything that it continues to do for you! Start loving yourself now. Happiness will not come with a specific dress size, weight on the scale or even a particular health status. Happiness is not something that we can delay and say that we will claim once we reach x, y or z . BECAUSE, GUESS WHAT . the goal posts will keep shifting and if you live with that approach your time will never come. . 3. Your time is now! So love yourself for who you are right now and the rest will follow. The key to happiness is perspective, and in particular the perspective of gratitude! . Being happy does not mean that you don't experience negative emotions and that you are happy all the time. Happiness is about appreciating what you have in your life and being fortunate enough to shift your perspective so that you have more good days than bad. . 📷Yesterday I spent some time getting to know my new body. I may not have any ovaries and I may only have 1 boob, but this body is amazing because it allows me to breathe, to be Sophia's Mummy & to live!

#throwbackthursday and in the first pic i was a size 28/30 and i was over the moon to get into a size 16 in the middle pic. Never did I dream i could be in a size 10/12 which I am now, sometimes I still cant believe it. I still go to the back of the rack for the bigger sizes and sometimes I struggle to walk in a shop and chose something because I can fit in the clothes in any shop and its a bit overwhelming. Before I was stuck to a certain section or just a couple of plus size shops. To get to a size 12 was a major goal of mine and I may not be at target but I have got to one of my goals and stayed in these size clothes for months now. Its not always about that number on the scales but how you feel and how you smash other goals you set. ⁣⁣ I almost didn’t go out today as planned... after my psych. appt, I wanted and planned to tend to the garden a bit and then start working out again... then i’d go watch a movie....⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ But gardening took 2 hrs rather than 30 mins.... and i didn’t have time to go exercise... i felt ashamed... ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Felt unattractive with the trigger from being weighed at my docs appt a few days back still looming on my self deprecating mind. Felt and feel unhealthy...⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ All or nothing thinking and nihilism kicked in and i thought, “do i deserve to go and watch a movie?... is it worth it?... am I worth it?... isn’t it pointless... am i not as pointless as my attempts to look and feel physically better through working out?... i deserved to be punished...”⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I pushed myself... allowed myself to watch a movie... because come on... why the hell do i deserve to be punished?... im already suffering as it is.... i dont deserve anymore... ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I had the will... the desire... the drive to want to work out again... to find value in prolonging my life... value in feeling healthy... value in bettering my physical health in so many ways.... value in feeling attractive based on how i want to see myself as (within a line of reason and health)... value in seeing myself worthy enough for it all..⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ “Tomorrow’s another day. Today, let’s just do something nice to myself. Okay?⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ...okay...” so i did.

Yes I worry about my body. Yes I can post a picture in a bikini but doesn’t mean I’m confident. Yes I feel pressure to look a certain way. Yes I know it’s easy for me to say as I have grown up being skinny which is still apparently the only way to be accepted in the media 👎🏻 apart from some amazing people / campaigns that are trying to help change this. Yes I did look at this picture and think of things I can improve rather than being grateful that I have a healthy functioning body. Yes I still care too much about how I look. YES I am going to work on loving myself more and accepting who I am.
