How to work on self acceptance👇🏼 . I know nowadays with social media, comparison, bullies, etc. it can be hard to accept yourself. . You feel a constant need to do or be more. You feel that you’re not enough just as you are, and constantly wish you were different. . Well, it’s time for you to stop feeling that way about yourself, bc you ARE enough just as you are. . Here are a few steps you can take to start working towards this mindset shift: . 1. Stop & think back to when, or why, you started feeling negatively towards yourself. - was it bc someone made you feel this way about yourself? Is it bc of the mold society tells us we have to fit into? - then, ask yourself if it’s worth you continuing to believe this. Write down the pros & cons of continuing to believe you’re not enough, and then for if you change your mind. 2. Realize you have the power to choose your beliefs, and what has power over you. You get to decide whether or not you let other people make you feel less about yourself. 3. Identify the parts of yourself you feel need improvement, and choose ways you can improve them. The truth is, we are all works in progress and always have room to become better, so accept yourself where you’re at, and decide how you want to improve . Depression is ubiquitous. We all have either experienced depression or know someone who has or is currently experiencing it. This mood disorder is actually the leading cause of disability in America, so it is obvious to see why education on the topic is so important. There is a common misconception that depression just happens, but this is far from the truth. Almost every illness and disease has a root cause and can be linked to some sort of underlying issue that can be fixed. While many people are already aware that depression can be due to a myriad of nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, lifestyle factors (sleep/stress/etc.) and so on, still many people feel hopeless with what to do when they are feeling depressed. My goal of this post is to help clear some of the confusion surrounding this subject. Multiple studies show that some of the recurrent deficiencies when examining patients with wide range of mental disorders are omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin D, B vitamins, magnesium, iron, selenium, amino acids, iodine, and zinc. Getting blood tests/hormone tests done, researching what vitamin/mineral levels should be for yourself, and incorporating a healthy balanced diet is the first step into solving issues with depression. There is no way around that. If you are consistently consuming a pro-inflammatory diet, this will come with many issues, including depression. Research shows that individuals experiencing depression have increased levels of inflammatory markers in the body than individuals who are not. Chronic inflammation has also been shown to decrease serotonin levels. On top of a well rounded diet, the next step to help feelings of depression would be to start incorporating healthy habits in your routine. Ideally this would include a consistent healthy sleep schedule, physical exercise, meditation, decreasing toxin exposure, taking anti-inflammatory supplements for the time being, yoga, affirmations, journaling, etc. Part 2 will go more in depth into the mechanisms!

Just some ideas to get you thinking.⁠ ⁠ I've been reading a fascinating book called "The Well Balanced Child" By Sally Goddard Blythe. ⁠ ⁠ She connects movement, music, and nutrition to the development of a child's brain. ⁠ ⁠ It's fascinating to me how it is all connected. And how when we help a child in one way, it can positively affect other areas too. ⁠ ⁠ She is a believer in helping a child in these areas before pushing academics. Because academics will fall into place when other needs are taken care of. 🌞 Do you know your D??? 🌞 Vitamin D is a Key immune modulating nutrient and actually it functions like a HORMONE!!! The conventional range is typically 30-100. Mine was 21!! Clinically low! . Although, if you have a Vitamin D level of say 30, even though it is in clinical range it is sub-optimal. The Sweet spot is 60-80. 🌞 Getting Vitamin D from the sun is the best way to get it!!!! From March to October get out mid-day for 30 minutes without sunscreen ( it's poison anyways). Expose your torso if you can it absorbs D in greater amounts ( more surface). NO, I am not advocating you lay in the sun for hours or EVER let your skin burn, that is a NO NO, but this is basic biochemistry this is how we synthesize D!! Get some daily sun. If you are stuck exposed all day find a less toxic sunscreen. Your skin is like a giant mouth. 🌞 Vitamin D has a half life of about 3 weeks and the way the sun is positioned we are not able to synthesize D after October until Spring ( Ehem, hello "flu season" lower D= lowered immune function) So, knowing your level and supplementing accordingly over the winter is known to be supportive of maintaining optimal levels. 🌞 Some people need more than others. Monitor your levels. Supplementing too much or too high of a dose ( like those mega doses sometimes prescribed) can deplete Vitamin A and Magnesium!!!! Vitamin D requires Vitamin A, Magnesium and K2 for synthesis. They work in synergy. So, if you've been supplementing for ever and your levels don't come up???? Are you possibly missing one of these co-factors for D synthesis? Vitamin D supplements often come combined with K2, this is a great way to ensure this co-factor. Vitamin D2 has to be converted by the body to D3. Get the picture? Might as well skip that and use the more bio-available form D3. 🌞 Vitamin D ensures tight junctions between micro-villi in the small-intestine. Low vitamin D increases the risk of intestinal permeability and the development of inappropriate immune reactions. e.g. food sensitivities, chronic inflammation. 🌞 Do you know your D???

We've all heard the talk about probiotics lately and how important they are for gut health which, in turn promotes brain health. But how are you getting yours? For a long time, I was taking priobiotic supplements but how many of us get our probiotics from our food? While supplements definitely are an effective way to get your probiotics, you actually get a MUCH higher concentration of them from foods such as yogurt, kefir, miso, tempeh and fermented foods and beverages. So, for the next few days, I will be posting some of my favorite ways to get probiotics from my foods. Today's product is kombucha (a fermented tea based beverage). While it does take some getting used to for some people, I really enjoy it. Today is one of those days where I won't be home for supper (which is where I usually incorporate my proboitic foods) so I'm enjoying a can of one of my favorite kombucha's, @happybellykombucha is my go-to brand these days and, while it's hard to narow down which one I like best, I'd have to say that Love Potion is one of my favorites. #52smallchanges Week 10- Take Time to Stretch As awesome as it would be to add in a yoga or Pilates class into your weekly schedule (I highly recommend it and can assist you if interested) or to go get assisted stretching at a place like @stretchzonegtown it can’t always be done. Thankfully, you can stretch wherever your heart desires! The Change- stretch a minimum of 20 minutes 3x a week to maintain flexibility. Today’s example shows a chest stretch which can easily be done at home or the office. My favorite chest opener is to take my hands in the prayer position behind my back. My look down for so many hours which closes in our chest so we need to open it back up. A quick google search will provide additional examples (or ask me about those yoga and Pilates classes). Remember: Rules of the road: 1. Do each stretch 2-4 times and hold for 10-30 seconds. 2. Begin with larger muscle groups and then smaller muscle fry. 3. Stretching should cause some minor discomfort but if it’s painful, pull back on the stretch. 4. No bouncing 5. How does this quote apply to my clinical experiences and my patients? To start, the biggest reason is many of my patients come into the clinic feeling defeated by their pain. Our negative thoughts of our pain continue us on this cycle of feeling like we are hopeless. Many people don’t understand that our mental health or our ability to focus on the positives plays a HUGE role in our recovery of any condition. If we will it to happen, often times that positivity can drive the process further to recovery. If we believe it won’t happen, we call this, nocebo. Nocebo is essentially our body’s negative response to our thoughts of something not working. We need to talk more about our fears, our mental health, and address the attitudes of our patients. ⁠Guys checking someone’s muscle tone is something that can give you SOOOO MUCH INFORMATION! So often people have a much higher tension to muscle and it’s not related to their exercise regiment or even their posture. The brain 🧠 sets the tone to the muscles and if someone had a head injury/whiplash (even years ago!), stroke, or some other kind of functional damage to the parts of the brain that control muscle tightness, then it doesn’t make sense to think you’re going to fix your “tightness” in your hamstring, neck, back etc with more yoga 🧘‍♀️ and foam roll, massage, or even movement training! ⠀ ⠀ These things can absolutely help temporarily and some may even get you a large percentage feeling a bit less tight overall, but if you don’t fix the parts of the brain that control those areas of your body that are chronically tight you’re missing a large part of the puzzle 🧩 to becoming the strongest, healthiest version of you! ⠀if you are still struggling with chronic tightness have not just your movements assessed but also your brains function 🧠. Remember when I was talking about air fryer sweet potatoes? This is one of my favorite ways to eat them, and it’s sooooo easy, especially if the sweet potatoes are made ahead of time. 👏🏼 . All I do is reheat them in a pan, scramble a couple eggs, then throw both in a bowl with greens, avocado, and goat cheese. I drizzle a little balsamic on the greens because it really adds an extra 👊🏼 to the flavor blend! . I eat this meal for lunch many days, especially post workout because sweet potatoes are such a great re-fueling carb (if you care about things like that 😂). . I hate wasting my clients’ time and $ on stuff that doesn’t work. All movement pros should. . . Here’s the elephant in the room that so few want to talk about... your corrective exercise approach isn’t really working. Am I right? . . I say this boldly bc I’ve yet to meet a corrective exercise specialist whose stuff does work with a high degree of consistency. . . There seems to be a whole lot of “do this - do that” advice being thrown around by nationally- and world-renown “corrective exercise” experts who teach others how to “do it” the right way. 😉 . . I might even start to believe that one of them has something ultra-valuable to share if they were only able to show us more than 1-2 success stories from amongst their 100s or 1000s of students. These experts are typically very good at weaving together some logical-sounding explanation that actually makes a lot of sense on the surface but I will still say... “show me a few examples of your stuff producing real results on real people”. . . Anybody out there getting consistently great results with mainstream “stretch what’s tight” or “strengthen what’s weak” correctives/therapeutics? I’d love to hear your 5th or 25th best corrective exercise story bc any one can get lucky once or twice. . . I’m only the messenger of this grim news. Been sitting here at my new favorite place in Calgary, The Big Box, with a little wrecking crew of kids. This is a massive indoor playground, which the kids love, so much stuff for them to do physically and mentally and Ill only see them once an hour for a bottle of water and update of who kicked who in the head! #boys : The parent section has very comfortable chairs and tables, super fast Wi-Fi and really good coffee for a brew. This means that I get to look as Dad/Uncle of the year, while I’m actually using this place as a personal trainer for the kids while I sit here and work my business. I am so GRATEFUL I can do this. : When I was National Coach I would be on the road for 200 days a year and when I was home I would be all over the place. I missed everything it seemed. All though I miss that job and fun/stress it brought, I would never in a million years give up what I have now. A parent whom is present ever day making memories because my business is run off my phone my office is where I bring my kids. : I look around and I am the only male here. Most of the moms have young kids and are on maternity leave from my guess, soaking up every second, as they eventually need to go back to work. What if I told you that you can be the parent you want and build the life you want! That you can be your own boss and make your own rules!
