Most people are so quick to judge, discourage, and talk themself down that it can really build anxiety and depression or increase the “symptoms”. Work on giving yourself positive affirmations. I tried to find a nice quote about learning, knowledge, or one’s library. 📚 However, that would be too simple. . . Back in college, I was lucky enough to find a field I could become passionate about (exercise science) and I didn’t want to stop learning about it. And not just new information or more schooling, but new perspectives, theories, and types of training. My first job search out of college, I found a place ( @burnfit ) full of people who encouraged learning, self development, and continuing education. Now, I appreciate having been in that environment for over 6 years because it had taught me to always continue on. They taught me not only to simply continue improving myself, but to improve in order to better serve my clients, fellow trainers, and company. As always, thank you for that. 🙏🏻 . . Now, my personal mission is to be always on the hunt for more knowledge, to be open minded to new information, and to share it with those around me. What good is a library if you don’t use and apply the information? And what good is the information if it doesn’t help others? Think of a time when you began a new diet or implementing a new fitness routine. Chances are the first step you took was listing either on paper or mentally all the things you can't do or eat as well as stop doing. Even before you begin to have the feeling of restriction and possible feeling overwhelmed. ⁣ ⁣ How you speak to yourself during a behavior change is crucial. ⁣ ⁣ Let's look at can't vs. don't:⁣ ⁣ Why should “I can’t” be stricken from your language? ⁣ In 2012, The Journal of Consumer Research published a study called, “I don’t versus ‘I Can’t: When Empowered Refusal Motivates Goal-Directed Behavior” 120 participants in this study were split into two different groups: “I don’t” group and the “I can’t” group. When faced with temptation each group was told to tell themselves either “I can’t do X” or “I don’t do X”. Both phrases are seemingly synonymous phrases, but as the results of the study showed, they have very different impacts When the students were leaving the study they performed one more task. Each student was offered a snack as a thank-you for participating in the study. There were a healthier option and a chocolate bar. The students in the “I can’t” chose the chocolate 61% of the time. I love that my dear friend (soon-to-be doctor), Namhee, is always clear in her convictions. She is triumphant and powerful in the face of adversity. It’s almost magical that no matter how infrequently we have one of these rich, soulful talks, she always gets it and so do I. - We’ve both had major life events that took us off our paths, produced new perspective, and transformed our lives. It’s inevitable that ALL of us will experience major life events. For Namhee and I, these events eventually led us back to alignment with our innermost values as human beings. - You may have experienced dissonance after an event(s) as you search for meaning and adhere to habit while also trying to shift. You may feel resistance and think, “why is this my truth now? why me?” These questions are normal. Resistance and dissonance is normal. Transitions and adjustments take time and ongoing processing ~ it takes practice to stay informed and match thoughts/feelings with actions that will thereby create outcomes that will meet you and serve you in the new place that you are in. You will re-evaluate what priorities will need to be transposed to create some sense of equilibrium again. You will sit in silence, sit with tears, or experience various emotions guaranteed. - Yet this disharmony or lack of synchronicity will remind you that you are human.
