Partly due to a mixture of having a Cold, a sprained ankle and spending a weekend Deadpooling about at MCM London in October and early November, first long run in a few weeks. Finally got out there for a nice little 5K route. I needed to find a way to like running again after Swansea half marathon broke me this year! I went without any timer just to try and find some head space and enjoy running rather than clock watching and counting down the miles, I just enjoyed them. Ok so still relatively slow, but I've a feeling that pushing too hard contributed to.my getting injured so I'm working hard on keeping an easy pace for these long runs. @deliciouslyella Brussels sprout recipe 🤤🤤🤤It’s been a couple of years now that me and my husband have been cutting meat. It’s not easy as we are both big foodies and love to experience all sort of food especially on holidays. I don’t see myself giving up meat at all but looking at the evidence of the devastating impact of the meat industry on our environment breaks my lil heart 💔 even if we don’t all become vegetarian we could make a significant impact even if we just diminished our meat consumption. What I’ve started doing it’s to write down what I consumed for my lunches/dinner (M meat, F fish, V vegetarian/vegan) and check at the end of the week what I ate. (I eat vegetarian for breakfast and snacks). My goal is 6 F, 6 V and 2 M(ideally white). This week this are my stats so far: 4F, 5V, 2M(all chicken!). So far it’s been a good week but eating habits take time to change so here a few things that work for me: 🌱 make soups for dinner, great way to have vegan meals without even realising you are not eating meat 🌱 I have fish (I only eat wild/caught) with a salad or other veggies for lunch at work/uni. (I know this can be expensive an expensive option for some) 🌱 add pasta to your week with vegetable/nice homemade pesto 🌱 experiment vegan/veg dishes that look yummy. I personally love Ella and another favourite is the Green kitchen book (the falafel recipe is to die for). This last point is even more important if your partner is a meat lover and things vegetarian=boring! I also think we should not be judgemental, I hate when vegetarian people look at me with despise if I order meat. We need to appreciate when people try and make better choices but really stop the judgement ☮️ I am also doing all sorts of things to be more sustainable, I’ll share my experience and all of this little by little if you guys are interested! Brought tomorrow's workout forward as I'm doing 10miles tomorrow morning (yikes). Running is just so much easier when you've not had a particularly difficult PT session and legs bums and tums just beforehand. Still not up to the speed I was before the hip injury, but not too disappointed considering it's the first time I've run with a backpack on for a while and 4 minutes were deliberately slow as they were warm up and cool. Does anyone else find running slower for the cool down harder mentally than running faster? CrossFit and running... 🏋🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️ One thing I get asked a lot is whether CrossFit is good cross training for running. So I thought I’d do a post to share the CrossFit love! To cover off first - I am CrossFit level 1 qualified, as well as trained in PT, sports massage, etc., but this post is also based on personal opinion & experience. - - - First things first - what is it? CrossFit consists of: ☑️ constantly varied ☑️ functional movements (natural/purposeful/useful) ☑️ performed at high intensity The variety aspect applies to both the movements performed as well as the timings. This means you’ll be changing rep schemes, workout duration & rest periods, all affecting the energy systems used (endurance, power, etc.). - - - So how does this help running? I’ve found CrossFit has helped in the following ways: ✅ I’m stronger. Weightlifting has built my leg & core strength/stability as well as making me more explosive. Gymnastics moves have also helped my core - often overlooked in runners. ✅ I move better. Contrary to popular belief, CrossFit teaches you to pay attention to form & technique. By using correct muscle groups & building on weaker areas, I’ve improved my running form without even trying. ✅ I dig deeper. Quite often CrossFit workouts require a mental challenge that you might not get with running alone. You have to push through 30 mins of burpees or 100 squats (for example!) even though your legs & lungs are burning. It makes you physically stronger & mentally more resilient. ✅ I train for speed. With the majority of metcons lasting 6-20 mins, you’re automatically working harder & faster. We often train intervals, meaning I’m speed training without even knowing it. It might not be running, but your lungs don’t know that! - - - It’s all very well saying it, but the proof is in the pudding? Compare my times before & after CrossFit: 🏃🏻‍♀️ 5k: 25:12 > 23:05 🏃🏻‍♀️ 10k: 49:15 > 45:41 🏃🏻‍♀️ Half: 1:49:13 > 1:42:25 The outlier is my marathon time, & I’m hoping to address that next year... 🙏🏼🙈 If you’d like to know anything else about CrossFit, feel free to drop me a comment or DM - as per the stereotype, I’m always happy to talk about it! at London, United Kingdom

This week I’ve run 5km 3 times pushing my pace in intervals, I can’t maintain the higher paces but am pushing to a full minute at the higher ones for now... That was really hard work, seriously hard work. Nothing much to do with the actual run more to do with the PT and leg bums and tums I did first. @stef_stefit said I was going to hate her and there were a few minutes when I did. Amrap, 10 burpees going over the box between them followed by a hill sprint. Managed 7 rounds in 20mins. Quite proud of myself for not having any Kevin's and not stopping on any of the hills. Then there was the first Friday lbt for 3 weeks, and it was a leg burner. I have decided to raise money for Bliss as my charity for Brighton Marathon. This was my nephew, Ieuan. He was born prematurely along with his sister, Marie. They were born at 27 weeks in Shrewsbury back in October 2004 weighing 2lbs 6oz and 2lbs 4oz. Ieuan was the stronger of the two babies, but he developed complications and had to go to Birmingham Children's Hospital for an operation at 28 days old. More complications followed and his life support was switched off the following morning. He died in the arms of his parents, his only cuddle without tubes attached to his tiny body. Marie spent 3 months in hospital before going home to her family. After waking up to horrific weather and postponing this morning's sprint training we finally did it this afternoon and it was hell. Not only did she have the resistance band but I was pulling her in to the wind. Absolutely horrid, really hard and then she "persuaded" me not to wimp out of my training run afterwards. So also did workout 4 of the 27min 5k training plan, the last for a while with walk intervals, and if I'm honest not a bad pace considering the walk intervals. Thought it was probably a good idea now I’m running a marathon to invest in some new running shoes. I’ve had my old ones for years and I think they are actually more gym shoes than running ones. I went to a specialist running shop in Southend today and got some fab shoe advice. They looked at how I stand and then put me on a treadmill to measure my gait analysis. End result, I now how a lovely comfy pair of trainers (although still need to test them for running!). This time I’m choosing comfort over what they look like. High fiving a giant poppy... just because! 🤷🏻‍♀️❤️ It’s going to be a little while before I can get my running shoes on again, but after a positive physio session with some shockwave therapy at @mvphysio today and the awesome 3D gait analysis with @emmakirkyo at @profeetcustom on Saturday, I’m feeling GOOD and ready to plan out some goals. 🙌🏼🏃🏻‍♀️ - - - Although I have to admit, it is a little nerve-wracking not being able to run when everyone is starting to build up for their marathon training. But I need to be patient and trust in myself! 💁🏻‍♀️🙏🏼 I have miles in my legs, the ability to pick up distance relatively quickly and I’ve felt strong in my last couple of races. 🤞🏼💪🏼 So to help me avoid getting too paranoid, I’m going to put the groundwork in, do my exercises and (cliché, I know...) trust the process! - - - Photo from the @royalbritishlegion #poppyrun. I despise treadmills, but sometimes it's a useful way of forcing yourself to run a certain pace. Someone asked me the other day what I think about when I’m running. So I spent most of my long run this morning thinking ‘what do I think about when I’m running’? I came to the conclusion that I think about everything, anything and sometimes nothing at all. Including the usual thoughts like ‘am i nearly there yet’, ‘I’m cold’, ‘I’m wet’, ‘I’m hot’, ‘I’m tired’, ‘how far am I? - is that all’, ‘what shall I have for dinner’, ‘why am I doing this’, what I’m going to post to Instagram etc Then the more random thoughts, like this morning, ‘is that a dead cat in the bush, no it’s just a furry hat’ 😳. #runnersthoughts

What recovery looks like... 🤷🏻‍♀️😇 It may not be the most exciting thing to watch, but this is the reality! I’m now on day 4 of no running, and today I hit the gym for a little bit of weightlifting (let me tell you, there’s nothing like a fresh leg tattoo to get you to hit the right positions in your clean 😳🙈) supplemented with the exercise my physio says will help improve my running form and transfer of weight from one leg to the other. Single leg press, 3 x 10 at bodyweight. 💪🏼🏃🏻‍♀️ - - - This is my recovery programme, along with some other specific strengthening and stabilising exercises I’ve been given in the past, and I’m lucky to be able to keep up most other forms of exercise bar running while I rest this foot of mine, but sometimes you might need to do even less! 🙈💁🏻‍♀️ For example, the target load for this exercise would usually be 3/4 bodyweight for women, but because my physio knows my strengths and weaknesses, he’s changed it for me to get the most out of it. - - - I think all too often on Instagram we can feel pressured into doing bigger and bigger challenges and I’m sure a lot of people feel they can’t post without it being something spectacular for the ‘gram, but the “boring”, aka basic, stuff matters more! 🙌🏼 As @theandrew.tracey has more aptly (and humorously) put it, unless you can show good form in the more basic movements, there’s no use trying to move on to the flashy stuff! 🍑🥩😆 at Cannon Street

Completed the rearranged #broadlandhalfmarathon with team #gyrr yesterday. I found it quite a tough route, and achieved just a 2 second PB with my slowcoach time of 2:12:26. Went for a run this morning listening to The Prodigy’s new album ‘No Tourists’, instead of my usual running playlists. Is it a good album? Yes. Is it a great album? No. My son summed it up best-we’re playing it in the car over the weekend, it was four songs in, and I asked him if he liked it. Run #4 - First long steady run of the training block that almost didn't happen today until a sudden burst of motivation post-lunch (post-Dad nap). In the end it was not a steady run but more of a tempo run with a graded fade and then tired legs technique work on the end... not steady at all.
