Calves play a very big part in many of the leg exercises that I dabble in. I actually target the front of the calves more than the back, and like to get that muscle to  pop out if I can. A little lesson: The mother-calf bond is very strong. Cows are notorious for calling for their young even weeks after they’ve been separated and mourning the loss of a calf for so long that it can inhibit future pregnancies. But when it’s compromised, when a mother rejects her calf, the calf is often forced to then search for other unsuspecting nursing cows to steal a quick sip of milk from before getting shunned by that mother cow too. This cycle happens over and over again. Until the calf either starves to death or is able to forge on on his lonesome. These calves are called “dogies”. You’ve probably heard them in old westerns. Often these calves had not been completely weaned and their little calf tummies were not ready to digest rough range grass. This gave them sort of potbellies, looking like a bunch of dough in a sack. So they were called "dough-guts," which morphed into dogies. “I have attachment issues.” I think some of us can relate. We’ve been separated or estranged from someone who meant a lot. This is called “Disorganized Attachment”. A person who grew up with a disorganized attachment often won’t learn ways to self-soothe. They may have trouble socially or struggle in using others to regulate their emotions. It may be difficult for them to truly open up to others or to seek out help. They often have difficulty trusting people, as they were unable to trust those they relied on for safety growing up. ecause they struggle with poor social or emotional regulation skills, may find it difficult to form and sustain solid relationships. They often have difficulty managing stress. Having experiences of abuse, neglect or unresolved trauma in one’s early life can have lasting residue that leaves a parent prone to being flooded by emotions in times of stress between them and their child. Disorganized attachment is often passed from generation to generation, because parents who struggle with unresolved trauma themselves may have trouble tolerating a range of emotions in their child. Creating a coherent narrative to help build healthier, more secure attachments and strengthen their own sense of emotional resilience. at Rancho Palos Verdes, California

10.20.18: “The most painful body part for me to train is calves. It’s excruciating. I was blessed with good solid structure everywhere except between the knees and ankles😩. I have struggled and fought like Hell for years and years to pack on mass to these things because my Quads/Hamstrings and Arms just overwhelm my calves. I’ll never forget how they looked sixteen years ago when I first started training. OMG they were stilts! Toothpicks for real! It’s been a long hard struggle but I’ve found that for me volume is what gets results. Like every other body part, I bomb the Hell out of my calves forcing them to stretch and expand so that they can keep pace with the rest of my body. I even limit my cardio to a few weeks a year because they always shrink when I run 😩. That said, I’ve worked damn hard to build them up. Squat Sunday anyone? PT Ivan showed me a few different ways to correct some bad habits. We’ve all got our vices 😂 Using a bench! This got me in the habit of shifting my weight into my heels and standing up straight instead of leaning into the upright phase. Standing on plates! I have really tight calves, and I find they throw everything in my body off. Standing on plates raises me off the ground a bit, therefore making me higher above the bench, so I have to sit down further in my squat. He also had me look up towards the ceiling to straighten up my back. 🍑

This is a great stretch to implement post workout, in the morning once you get out of bed, and to add in your daily stretching practice!👍🏼 . Work at your range of motion where you can keep legs as straight as possible, and where there is no pain. From 1-10 you want to be at a 6 or 7. . The stretch is great for the posterior chain, your hammies, calves, low back, spine health, and improved blood circulation to areas that are dormant during a 9-5.👌🏼 . Hold it anywhere from 30-45 seconds, and do it a few times to see if your range of motion has improved. . Practicing a hip hinge is crucial for lower body development, prehab/injury prevention, and improving power output in sport. Try to do this with a flat back and see how far your range is!🤔 . Day 20/56: Another great hamstring/calf workout! I usually have trouble isolating my hamstrings, but Fouad’s tips have helped A LOT. The tips concerning the lying and seated leg curls are GOLD! I really concentrated on “lifting my knees” this week on the lying curls and felt a huge difference. Also leaning forward in the seated curls and concentrating on the bottom portion helped tremendously. Especially with BFR. My left hamstring feels about normal at this point instead of teetering on injury. I just hope that once I start pulling heavy again, it stays that way! • One tip on BFR for calves, is to wrap at the top of your leg the same as you would with quads and hamstrings. With BFR you always want to wrap as high as possible on the limb to make it most effective. • Week 3 in the books. The diet and cardio is definitely starting to wear on me but it’s only temporary and worth it! #LEGDAY 🚨FAIL ALERT🚨 Gotta fail to progress sometimes esp in the world of fitness. Today was my first time truly failing out on squats and it was a tad bit sketchy. Tried to hit 500 for a double (nothing crazy considering I’ve hit 495 for a double) and after the first rep I knew I shouldn’t go for a second but I said fuck it and, well.. check it out. Usually you don’t wanna fail forward but my hips were so far back and I knew I could get my head and shoulders out of the way quick enough I made it out of this without any strain or injury other than a slight abrasion on my upper back from the bar sliding off. Always use some sort of safety guard when hitting heavy weight ESP if you don’t have a spotter.
