Anxiety and Depression can be felt together. It is not "all in your head". Understanding your physiology can be helpful. Your atonomic nervous system controls your response to your environment with the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. Sympathetic- fight or flight Parasympathetic- rest and digest Anxiety causes your sympathetic nervous system to be stuck in the "on" position. This system wants us to get away or win that fight! We are activating this with every day stress more often that life threatening moments in the modern world. Sympathetic nervous system causes our heart rate to increase and our airways to dialate making it easier for us to breathe. It also increases our muscular strength and releases stored energy in preparation for fighting or fleeing. As a mamal if you are unable to escape the threat (or daily stress) our parasympathetic system kicks in and causes us to freeze (or play dead) and shut down. The parasympathetic nervous system slows heart rate, decreases blood pressure, and stimulates the digestive tract to process food and eliminate wastes. When you have depression, your parasympathetic nervous system essentially is stuck in the "on" position. People may be in survival mode more than is necessary or healthy. And your body isn't designed to physically handle this chronic fear and stress. Unfortunately, it is out of our control which survival mode we are in or which defensive response to use. When felt together your mental health suffers greatly and it isn't uncommon. Breath Control therapy can help to calm your nervous system and get you back into a balanced emotional regularity and restore homeostasis to your mind and body. #anxietyanddepression #breathenanaimo #breathebc #breathecanada #anxietydepression #anxiety #depression #mentalhealthwarrior #canadamentalhealth #metalhealthcare #mentalstrength #mentalhealth #breathcoaching #breatheologyinstructors

Hey Halifax! On Saturday June 22nd Sparkles n' Sawdust Shop is holding a free community Mental Health Awareness event @ 11am - 2pm ( drop-in anytime). The shop will be open regular hours. This will be an opportunity to come together and actually talk to like minded people. I'll have complimentry mini cupcakes (because, lets be honest, cupcakes make everything slightly better 😊) and a board of hope where you can leave messages of empowerment, positivity or brief advice for others. If you are a supporter or advocate of mental health, please come! If you are feeling the effects of mental illness, please come! If you have a big heart and enjoy supporting others, please come! Motherhood can mean so many things, they can be by blood or chosen, they are the strength in our communities, the ones who love us, who raise us up, the ones that hold us together. Today let us celebrate not only the mothers in our own families but the women in our lives striving to make our world a better place, those who are trying or have lost, those that continue on in the face of uncertainty. Today is a day to celebrate the maternal influences and shine a light on how they are changing the future for the better. . The two photos above are of two very special mothers in my life both my mother in law and my own mother (on the left pictured with her sister). Both mothers have passed on - mine almost 6 years ago. Such big losses. They are truly not entirely appreciated until they are gone. There are so many things they do for their families that go unacknowledged and are unappreciated. There are so many ways, big and little, that they know us and take care of us.

Posted @withrepost@theartoflivingcanada Neither at home nor at school are we taught how to handle our negative emotions. We learn dental hygiene but forget to learn the most important health - mental health! . Negative emotions can make you sink into depression, and wisdom of the Self can take you out of depression. This is where meditation and breathing techniques can play an important role. They are the tools that help you calm your mind, and make you feel happy from within. Many illnesses can be helped through meditation and breathing techniques. In fact, I would say that meditation is food for the soul. Meditation has many benefits. When our mind is calm, we are able to make better decisions, thus creating a more harmonious and positive atmosphere around us. There is a significant body of research on how meditation helps improve conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, heart problems, sleep disorders, and nervous system disorders, among others (5). Apart from benefiting physical health, meditation improves concentration and helps one be in the present moment. If you observe, the mind vacillates between the past and the future. . "Where do we even begin searching for our ""purpose""? In Japan, there is a concept of Ikigai (pronounced “eye-ka-guy”). Ikigai is a set of interacting parts of your life that overlap into your purpose, swipe left to see how it is laid out. The goal of an Ikigai lifestyle is to find a balance between the spiritual and practical parts of your life. This balance is found at the intersections where your passions and talents converge with the things that the world needs and is willing to pay for. . Creating your Ikigai: 1) Start by collecting some different color sticky notes or pieces of paper. Go through each outer circle, one at a time, and make a list of A) All the things you love (could be nature, your kids, popcorn and movies) B) What you believe you are good at (be kind and generous with yourself) C) What you think the world needs D) What skills you have that you can be paid for. Write down everything, even if it seems silly, even if you're not sure, even if it's a duplicate of another question. . 2) Lay your pieces of paper out on the floor or stickies on a wall and see where things can start overlapping into the next set of circles. Your vocation, profession, passion, and mission. . 3) Leave these pieces of paper out for a few days where you will see them. Look at them a few times a day, move them around, add more. Get to know what you are looking for in a fulfilling and happy life. Eventually, you can start pulling away the ones that don't strike you as much and will be left with what you find important in your life and how to turn that into a lifestyle. . If you'd like to learn more about Ikigai, I've put a link in my bio and a short video on my Facebook Page (Roma Palmer Counselling) If you have any questions please feel free to leave a comment or send me a message. Happy discovering. 🗺️

“Mental health is a state of well-being, and we all have it. We might have a mental illness, and we might not. Either way, we can all feel well. We can all have good mental health. It is about having a sense of purpose, strong relationships, feeling connected to our communities, knowing who we are, coping with stress and enjoying life. And it’s never too early or too late to get there. But it’s not just about what you do for yourself, by yourself—everyone needs healthy and supportive places to work, live and learn.”. #getloud #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #mentalhealthbc #kelownamentalhealth #feelgood #loveyourself #royallepagekelowna #lienepoulsenrealty #canadamentalhealth #canadamentalhealthweek #kelownacommunity

I’m SO VERY GRATEFUL to have gone outside of my comfort zone to offer E-Therapy and it’s been a wonderful experience! I love writing and have always dream of doing EMAIL THERAPY! This past week I had 2 amazing EMAIL therapy sessions. In the first one ( shared with permission) the client wrote asking for guidance in management of her anxiety specifically at school when having tests or exams. She told me she really liked the Email as she was able to read it over more than once and implement the tips I sent her. The second request was from a beautiful young lady wanting some tips on how she could improve her self-confidence when wearing a bathing suit this summer and how to work on loving herself and her body. She also shared with me how great it was to be able to express her feelings in writing and then re-read my feedback and work on the writing exercises I sent her. EMAIL therapy can be just one session or as many as you feel you need. Common requests are for anxiety management skills, how to work with their inner critic, how to increase self-compassion/self-esteem/self-love, setting up a self-care plan or how to connect with their inner child. I allot a one hour time frame to reflect and provide a thoughtful reply which may include exercises such as journal prompts for you to work on. I will usually reply to your EMAIL within 72 hours. Prior to starting Email Counselling there are some forms to complete which you can get by sending me an email at [email protected] For more information please visit https://m.andreaaddington.com/E-Mail-Therapy--Q-A.html #moncton #newbrunswick #etherapy #onlinetherapy #counselorsofinstagram #therapyiscool #anxietyrelief #selfcare #canadamentalhealth #mentalhealthcanada #counselorsofinstagram

You can't give when you have nothing left. We often think that long weekends will be relaxing, but by the time we see friends and family, enjoy the sunshine, cook the meals, and do all the cleaning up we're exhausted. Luckily it's a short work week! This is a simple reminder to find time for yourself during this time. Even if that's just reading a few pages of your book, sipping that coffee a little bit slower, or going for a walk - these little moments help us to recharge and come back with more strength.

When is the last time you really took a minute to look at the clouds? To stare at the cherry blossoms fell around you? To listen to the world around you puttering along and all the happy sounds that come with spring? With long weekends and holidays, it's easy to get pulled into hectic days with family and friends. This is just a soft weekly reminder to slow down, take a deep breath and remember to have gratitude for the little things. 🌸

When was the last time you were creative?⁣ .⁣ When was the last time you just sat down and painted or sang, pulled out your old guitar or built Lego castles with the kids? As we grow into adulthood we often lose these creative explorations because we're busy or it's not productive. But creativity helps us to process emotions, allows us to relax and just play, it helps to expand our imaginations and therefore allows us to find joy in the smaller things in life. Try to challenge yourself this week to find a moment of creativity. You don't have to be good at it, it doesn't have to have a finished product, just find a moment to sing, to draw, to write or be silly. Your brain will thank you for it.

When endings come in any form it can be difficult, the ending of a relationship, a job, or just a chapter in your life. But like any problem that presents itself the way in which we handle controls our happiness. Of course, losing pieces of our lives can hurt and you have all the right to mourn and process but allowing each of these moments to be an opportunity. To see the lessons learned and be grateful that you had that experience in your life. Every ending is a beginning, the more lightly you can release and the faster you can focus on what incredible things may lay ahead.

Pets for many of us are more than just a four-legged furball presence. They are family who loves to curl up on the couch, go for walks or chat (usually around meal times). Studies are now revealing something that most pet owners have always know, that they are also extremely good for our health. Petting a furry friend for a few minutes can help to lower your blood pressure helping with heart health, they make sure that we exercise and have a form of socializing. So today we celebrate pets, for their love, companionship and all the silly joy they bring into our lives.⁣

Practicing gratitude daily can completely change how we view the world. From gratitude journals to jars, taking time to write loved ones letters of appreciation or just practicing simple meditation there are many small and large ways to work this into your daily life. The easiest way to start is by bookending your day with a writing exercise. When you wake up, sit for 5 minutes and write down 3 things you are grateful for, try to stay away from material items and instead focus on events and people around you. It's that simple. Then at the end of your day take 5 minutes before bed to write down 3 things that happened that day that you made you smile or think, things that impacted you in some way. If you would like to learn more about acts of gratitude and the importance it plays on our lives, there is a link in my bio.⁣ .⁣ How do you practice gratitude?

April is Stress Awareness Month, but what effects does stress actually have on our body? Well, when you become stressed out the body believes it is under attack and switches to ‘fight or flight’ mode releasing a complex mix of hormones and chemicals such as adrenaline, cortisol, and norepinephrine. This can cause a number of reactions, from blood being diverted to muscles to shutting down unnecessary bodily functions such as digestion. If we experience stress over long periods of time our bodies can normalize at this survival level causing negative effects such as your brain limiting the amounts of cortisol and estrogen it releases or shrinking your hippocampus, the area of your brain that stores memories.⁣ .⁣ We all feel stressed sometimes, it's a natural part of our world. It's learning the right tools to combat it that can help keep us happy and healthy in our daily lives. Here are 5 simple things you can start today to combat stressful days:⁣ 1) Get a good nights sleep⁣ 2) Stay hydrated and choose nutrient-dense meals⁣ 3) Practice daily meditation⁣ 4) Prioritize your health by creating downtime⁣ 5) Get moving - even gentle stretching or walking can make an impact⁣ .⁣ Do you have any other techniques you use to combat stress?

I wanted to share this idea I found on Facebook. I am going to look into natural plants and oils to start healing my mind and body. They say the jasmine plant helps to calm the body and reduce anxiety. Maybe get one for the house or your bedroom!💚🌷🌿🌻🦋 • • • • • #jasmine #jasmineplant #anxiety #antianxiety #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #mentalhealthblog #mentalhealthadvice #healing #healyourbody #healyourmind #mindfulness #positivevibes #holisitic #natural #anxietyrelief #anxietyproblems #positive #mentalhealthrecovery #bipolar #bpd #ptsd #canadamentalhealth #mentalhealthaware_ #ontario #disabilityawareness

According to the Public Health agency of Canada, suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for both youth ages 10-19 and young adults ages 20-29. Different studies show that 84% to more than 91% of youth also play video games. MONTH: 3 Each 5 seconds, I have to take my mind here, in the present moment. I'm learning to have a new me without killing the old me, who were dealing with cooping mechanisms that no longer needs to protect me cause I'm not in danger anymore. I have to remind me that this will not last forever. I won't be the victim of my childhood anymore. Sometimes, i really think I'm going to die because of how much of my energy is taken. I don't want to be in prison anymore. Our mind is not supposed to be our enemies. Even if I don't see it, the efforts I put in everything will deliver me from everything. I'm now learning to live and not to survive. I dont need a stranger in my body. . . #blackandwhite #realisticeyes #blueeyes #living #stranger #prismacolorpremier #tiredeyes #learningtolive #surviving #protection #canadamentalhealth #mentalhealthrecovery #unknowndisease #peace #3months #drawingquebec #fighting #anxiety #ptsd @prismacolor

I have many clients for whom social media is an extension of their everyday world. They move seamlessly between the people in front of them and the people on their phones. This helps them feel connected yet, there can be an element of FOMO to it as well. This fear of missing out can keep people scrolling when their brains could use a break: trolling ex-partners, checking out other people’s seemingly fabulous lives. Alternately it can be a way to numb out or avoid their lives: watching endless videos.⠀ .⠀ There is a point at which social media turns from friend to foe. Finding that line and checking in with yourself regularly to make sure where you sit is important. Making a point to take breaks is important. Noticing if taking breaks makes you anxious is important. Finding alternate strategies to scrolling to help manage anxiety is important. . Catherine Price's "How to Break Up With Your Phone" a fantastic read on the topic, there's a link to her article in my bio.⠀ .⠀ #socialmediahabits #healthyhabits #putdownthephone #liveinthenow #socialmediatips #instagram #facebook #twitter #socialmediadetox #socialmediabreak #socialmediaaddict #lettinggo #createspace #healthyhabitshealthyparenting #parentingtips #livinginthepresent #digitaldisconnect #healthyhabitsforreallife #tipsforahealthylife #talktotherightpeople #counsellingbc #counsellingvancouver #Vancouvermentalhealth #vancouvercounselling #psychologytoday #canadamentalhealth #Vancouveremotionalsupport #mentalhealthawareness
