Broughty Ferry Castle, Scotland⁣ ⁣ The castle was involved in what is known as the Rough Wooing in the 16th Century. After the English won the Battle of Pinkie in 1547, Sir Andrew Dudley was sent to capture Broughty Castle. The castle’s owner at the time was Lord Gray, who supported the English cause and wanted Mary Queen of Scots to marry a Protestant Englishman and not a Catholic Frenchman. The castle was captured by Dudley without a shot being fired.

The first known fortification at Edzell was built in the 12th century by the Abbott family. However, the castle seen today was built by David Lindsay, 9th Earl of Crawford between 1513 and 1558. ▫️ Following the Earl’s death, Edzell Castle passed to his son David. During his tenure the castle hosted a visit by Mary, Queen of Scots in 1562, and by her son, James VI, in 1580 during which he knighted David who subsequently prospered in the King's service, becoming a member of the Privy Council. To match his new status he initiated upgrades at Edzell, however these were beyond his means, leaving his family with crippling debt. ▫️ During the Wars of the Three Kingdoms the Lindsay family supported the Covenanters and fought against Charles I. On execution of the King, the Scottish Government switched its support to the Royalist cause prompting an invasion by Oliver Cromwell. Following his victory at the Battle of Dunbar Cromwell went on to occupy the country using numerous castles, including Edzell, as barracks. ▫️ The family's ownership of Edzell came to an end in 1715 when the last lord sold the castle to pay his debts. He ended his days in poverty as a stableman of a local Inn. The castle was purchased by James Maule, but his participation in the 1715 Jacobite rebellion saw his property confiscated. The castle was then purchased by the York Building Company who commenced asset stripping the site. ▫️ During the 1745 rebellion the castle was briefly occupied by Argyll Highlanders. After the rebellion the removal of building materials from the site continued into the 19th century when the castle was starting to be appreciated as a tourist attraction. It passed into state care in 1935. ▫️ Image by @andyatimages ————————————————— #scottish #lovescotland #scotland #scotland_insta #travelblogger #modernoutdoors #visitscotland #travelinggram #dronestagram #thisisscotland #scotlandtravel #scotspirit #mytinyatlas #travel #ig_worldclub #igersscotland #goexplore #folkscenery #castle #discoverglobe #gardendesign #discoverearth #roamtheplanet #history #castlesofscotland #beautifuldestinations #scotlandsbeauty #explorescotland #passionpassport #instascotland

Inveraray Castle is a country house near Inveraray in the county of Argyll, on the shore of Loch Fyne. It is one of the earliest examples of Gothic Revival architecture . It has been the seat of the Dukes of Argyll, chiefs of Clan Campbell, since the 18th century . It was designed by William Adam and Roger Morris and decorated by Robert Mylne for the 5th Duke of Argyll. Work on began in 1743, replacing the earlier 15th-century castle . Its definitive form, which we see today, is dated 1877, when the castle was restored following a fire, adding a third floor and the corner towers with their conical roofs . The castle is open to visitors. Its collection includes more than 1,300 pikes, muskets, swords and other weapons, in addition to family heirlooms . The castle is surrounded by a beautiful 16-acre garden where you can take relaxing walks and that changes constantly throughout the year: from the yellow of the daffodils to the bright reds and fuchsia of rhododendrons and azaleas . The 2012 Christmas episode of Downton Abbey was partly filmed here; the castle portraying the fictional "Duneagle” . . . . . . . . . #inveraraycastle #argyll #argyllshire #argyllandbute #dukeofargyll #bbcscotlandpics #scottishcastles #castlesofscotland #scotlandshots #scotlandroadtrip #scotlandsites #unlimitedscotland #discoverscotland #downtonabbey #aroundscotland

📸 @roman.ima captured me exploring the grounds below Duart Castle. - I felt a special connection to this place because this castle was the seat of the Clan MacLean, which is a family name for me. It's a bit funny though, because my grandfather, whose last name was McLean, is very Irish. We thought for years that the name traced from Ireland (ours anyway, it's a common name in both countries), until some extensive genealogy revealed that the 25% of him that gave him his last name in fact came from Scotland! - Anyone else learn something interesting while tracing your roots? Or have you done one of those DNA kits? It's something I want to try soon! . . . . . #instamood #theglobewanderer #bbctravel #passionpassport #iamatraveler #atlastrails #earthmood #folkscenery #elementsofwild #travellikeagirl #girlsthatwander #wildme #woman_in_landscape #sheadventures #girlsthatwander #letsgetlost #wheretofindme #postcardplaces #borntotravel #searchwandercollect #ventureout #suitcasetravels #travelcommunity #travelgram #castlesofscotland #castles #unlimitedscotland #thisisscotland #teamkaptainkenny #wanderlust

Orchardton Tower, Dumfries and Galloway. . Orchardton Tower is thought to have been built by John Cairns around 1455. The Cairns family had previously served the Stewart royal dynasty and the Earls of Douglas in various administrative, military, domestic, and diplomatic capacities. They are an interesting example of a family with good social connections who acted as gentleman-servants for higher-ranking dynasties, perhaps because they had only relatively modest revenues of their own. Their fortunes changed when they took the side of King James II against the Earl of Douglas in the 1450s and gained the lands of Orchardton at much reduced rent as a result. By 1558, the lairdship was divided between three heiresses and the estate fragmented. A local nobleman, Sir Robert Maxwell, gradually bought up all the pieces to reunite the lairdship for himself. We don’t know why John Cairns chose to build his tower on a circular plan. It is likely that it was as much a talking point among his contemporaries as it is today. It is a unique survival as a near free-standing late medieval circular tower. #orchardtontower #dumfriesandgalloway #historicscotland #castles_oftheworld #fiftyshades_of_history #explorescotland #loves_scotland #scotland #scotlandlover #scotland_greatshots #monumental_world #visitscotland #igscotland #ig_Scotland #icu_scotland #instascotland #loves_united_castle #traveling_scotland #traveling_uk #thisisscotland #unlimitedscotland #wonderlustscotland #photosofbritain #yourscotland #hiddenscotland #castlesofscotland #earthpix #tlpicks #castlemypassion #scotlandscenery

#SaturdayScotlandSnap is back with a look at Craigievar Castle -- the little pink jewel in the hills of Deeside. ****** The property belonged to the Mortimer family from 1457 or earlier, and they held it until 1610. The Mortimers built the lower floors of the castle, but ran out of money, and it was sold to the Forbes family, who finished the building in 1626 — to include the distinctive turrets, gables, chimney-stacks and corbelling of the upper storeys. There is no electricity and limited plumbing at the castle but the last Laird of Craigievar moved his family there after World War II. However, living in a museum and without electricity became an issue after a time and when the last Laird died in 1965, the property was passed to the NTS. It’s no wonder that Queen Victoria was captivated by this pink jewel on the hill. It was said that she spotted it on one of her expeditions and decided to visit. It was June 18, 1879 and, according to Victoria's journal, on finding no one at home, she simply let herself in and wandered around this "strange and curious old castle" until the residents were alerted to her presence and returned to greet her. Guess it’s good to be queen! 📸 @annegav Instagram

Another castle, because Scotland has so many lovely ones. This is Dunvegan Castle (garden pictures later, they are magnificent), a Hebridean castle and the only highland fortress to have been occupied by the same family, Clan MacLeod for 800 years It is on the Isle of Skye, built on an elevated rock on the shores of Loch Dunvegan. . . . . . . . . . #highlandexplorertours #highextours #scottishhighlands #isleofskye #castlesofscotland #castle #travelscotland #latergram #scotlandisnow #scotland_ig #instatravels #instascotland #scottishhighlands #traveldiaries #scotlandlove

🔎 Did you know that… 🎃 HALLOWEEN EDITION🎃 – #glamiscastle , one of the most haunted houses in GB? (👻) The Grey Lady of Glamis. The ghost that haunt the castle’s clock tower corresponds to Lady Janet Douglas. She was married to the 6th Lord of Glamis and was actively involved in regional politics. She was accused of poisoning his husband, convicted of witchcraft and burned at the stake. (👻👻) The Glamis monster. This sinister story or legend dates back to 1821 about a family member, the first-born son of the 11th Earl Thomas Bowes-Lyon and his wife Charlotte Bowes-Lyon, who was never allowed out of the castle after his birth because of his appearance. The ghost haunted the family long after its death. (👻👻👻) The secret chamber.  In 1486 the Ogilvy Clan sought shelter from their enemies, the Lindsay Clan. The Earl politely ushered them, then locked them to die of starvation. Unfortunately for the Ogilvys, he’d done a deal with the Lindsays. Their spirits linger in an unknown haunted chamber. Others believe that the Earl of Crawford, forever locked in a game of cards with Satan himself, sits inside the secret room. Even Sir Walter Scott knew of the existence of a secret chamber and after his overnight visit to the castle in 1790, he wrote this: “as I heard door after door shut, after my conductor had retired, I began to consider myself as too far from the living and somewhat too near to the dead”. . . . 🆕I'll be sharing "Halloween edition" photos during these two weeks. One of the best known castles in Ukraine. It was the movie set for many a Soviet mid-evil themed films! Therefore it was well taken care of over the last 100 years. First built in 1325 with upgrades occurring throughout the years the castle is still standing strong to this day. In more recent history in 1918-1919 the castle was occupied by 5 different countries Russia, Ukraine, Moldovia, Austria-Hungary and Romania… The castle is on the list of 7 National Ukrainian Wonders and for good reason. The restoration done on the castle is top notch 💖 Many small details were added to make it seem like you are really walking back into time & that is how we like it 💪🇺🇦💓

Built in 1430, Borthwick Castle is one of the largest and best-preserved surviving medieval Scottish fortifications. The castle was built as a double tower at the site of an earlier structure, and it remains the Borthwick family ancestral seat. Its founder, Sir William de Borthwick, had volunteered to be a substitute hostage in the ransom of James I of Scotland in 1425, and was accordingly given by him a special licence to build a castle. Sir William built the tower to an impressive scale: 74 feet in length, 68 in breadth, and in height, from the area to the battlements, 90 feet. The walls are of hewn stone, and the knoll on which the castle is situated, is surrounded by an outer court, enclosed and fortified by a strong outer wall. The interior of Borthwick Castle has seen little structural alteration over the years. The Great Hall is on the first storey and is 40 feet long, with a music gallery perched above and a lofty roof. Borthwick Castle was visited twice by Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1563 and 1567, the latter occasion when she and her new husband, James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, were besieged inside while under the protection of 6th Lord Borthwick. After marrying on 15 May 1567, the couple fled to Borthwick, and later escaped the siege, Mary, disguising herself as a page. In 1650 the Castle was attacked by Oliver Cromwell's forces, and was surrendered after only a few cannon shots. The damage to the walls from this attack is still visible. After a period of abandonment, the Castle was restored by 1914. During World War II the structure was used as a hiding place to store national treasures. ____ #castles_oftheworld #visitscotland #castlemypassion #osmaps #hrad #archaeology #scottishcastles #dnescestujem #instacastle #simplyscotland #medievalworld #historicscotland #manor_n_castle #castellidelmondo #scottishborders #castlesofscotland #outlander #fotkukazdejden #minveciviczazitku #cestounecestou #zamki #scottishcastles_ #jecozazit #ukshots #scotlandshots #castlesofinstagram #castleview #borthwickcastle #fotkyplnekysliku #monumental_world

C a s t l e S i n c l a i r G i r n i g o e | Clinging on to the cliffs on a stunning location between two geos, Castle Sinclair Girnigoe has been fighting storms, rain and wave erosion for more than 500 years. Projecting into Sinclair Bay near Noss Head lighthouse, the crumbling castle was once of considerable strategic importance. There is some evidence to suggest that the castle was built on the foundations of an earlier fort. Castle Sinclair Girnigoe is a complex of ruined stone structures built and modified over a 200-year period by the Sinclair Earls of Caithness, historically one of northern Scotland’s most powerful families. Girnigoe Castle was built around 1470 and additions were added through the early 17th century when the name Sinclair was added. Originally thought to be two separate fortresses, recent excavations and research indicate that the complex was in fact one castle with later additions. The castle was a cultural, artistic, and social center of this region of Scotland until the end of the 17th century. It was later damaged by cannon fire during a succession dispute, and has been uninhabited since 1690. A lack of maintenance combined with exposure to harsh coastal elements over a period of 500 years, as well as vandalism, have left the structures in the roofless complex in varying states of ruin. Most of the section originally called Sinclair Castle was completely ruined; only a chimney, some outer walling, and an access passage remain and were in need of repair to remain standing. The ruins of the tower house, formerly Girnigoe Castle, were in danger of collapsing into the sea. In addition, the cliff walls supporting the castle structures were actively failing, and the keystones supporting the walls on the precipice were unstable, further threatening the survival of the structures. The complex passed out of the Sinclair family but was bought back in the 1950s and was donated to a trust set up for its preservation in 1999. A lot of repairs have been carried out, including the addition of a new footbridge, seen here, which allows easier access to the castle and is located where the original drawbridge once was.

Broughty Ferry Castle, Scotland⁣ ⁣ ⁣ Broughty Ferry is a late medieval castle located on the north bank of the River Tay, four miles east of Dundee. Five English ships were captured in this area in 1489, which may have prompted the rebuilding of a castle here.

Perhaps the most famous window in Borthwick Castle, this is the exact location that Mary, Queen of Scots made her dramatic escape from Borthwick Castle in 1567. After arriving at Borthwick with her then-husband, The Earl of Bothwell, the Castle was soon surrounded by several Scottish barons and 1000 men on horseback, in pursuit of Bothwell after the murder of Mary's previous husband, which he was accused of. To ensure her safety, Mary fled the Castle, escaping out of this very window whilst disguised as a page boy, eventually riding on horseback to Black Castle where she was met by Bothwell. . . . . . #visitscotland #scotlandisnow #thisisedinburgh #scottishcastle #explorescotland #luxuryvenue #edinburgh #hiddenscotland #castlewedding #luxurycastle #exclusiveuse #thisisscotland #lovescotland #scotland_insta #edinburghsnapshots #castles #edinburghwedding #tietheknot #scottishwedding #edinphoto #weddingbells #historicscotland #interiordesign #luxuryinteriordesign #medievaltimes #castlesofscotland #castles_oftheworld #edinburghsnapshots #luxuryinteriordesigner #luxuryinteriors

Blessing my life by being present, committing to all my wildest dreams & desires, embracing my limitless creative energy, praising my own authenticity, trusting my inner self to lead the way to a future I surrender to as I am at peace with my present, while I create the life that sets true to my soul 😌 This past week felt a bit...crazy! I say the full moon may have some power to that! Found myself rushing, a bit lost, not present nor in the moment many times, had thoughts rushing through my head that are far from beneficial...and then I saw this photo that my pal took of me in Glencoe....and it brought me right back to where I needed to be. I remember being so excited, happy, present, right there! My heart was HAPPY! It was a place I longed to meet again and there I was 😍😀 and it was the reminder of how I want to live life..filled with emotions, excitement, doing what I love...but for that, I need to take care of the chaos that easily can run my life, from several alarm clocks as I need to be all over the place to trying to conquer a million things at once and do everything I wish I had done in these last 36...almost 37 years of my life! So now I pause! And breathe. And to yoga I am set to go this morning 🧘‍♀️ Going back to my morning affirmations, my daily rituals, my oils, the simple little things that keep me grounded and present! I knew this place right here in Glencoe was special, and today, it played a part in bringing myself back to me, even though I’m about 5 thousand miles away! #gratitude #writerslife #affirmations #grounding #natureismychurch #writersofinstagram
