I’m back from my vacation in Turkey and wanted to share this pic at the spice bazaar. I spent about an hour there, strolling through the shops, looking at all of the colors, smelling the teas, tasting the spices, and listening to so many languages from around the world. It’s a great practice in mindfulness. I think most people are already more mindful while on vacation, which is why we are less stressed, but we can practice mindfulness any time. A favorite mindfulness activity I share with the teens in my coping group is a chocolate meditation. We use all of our senses to look at the chocolate, feel the weight and shape and size, listen as we unwrap it, smell it’s delicious aroma, and finally taste it. Tried my new coping skills workshop today. Tried is the key word here. During the break I left & went home. Reasons being: 1. I have tried CBT many, many times in the past & it just doesn’t work for me. DBT is much more useful. 2. The room we sat in was tiny, I could barely move. 3. There was 5 other strangers & my social anxiety kicked in, I lost my voice & the ice breaker they did pushed my comfort zone a little too far. Therefore I left & do you know what... that is okay. I wasn’t comfortable & I could feel my anxiety rising. But the main thing is I TRIED. And that’s good enough. Tonight I am doing a bit of self care and NOT beating myself up as if I failed because I didn’t. My My My ... My recovery looks so damn good when I look at these next to eachother. University helped me in so many ways: - I wanted to fit in, so I slowly said YES to group takeaways - I sat on my arse revising in my spare time rather than obsessing about exercise - I hate wasting food, and when your dog isn't around to finish your meal, you should really finish it! . . . So much changed, and I had to have therapy prior to uni because I didn't think I'd be able to go (due to anxiety). In the last 3 years, I have been diagnosed with bulimia, 1 year later I told my family and another year later I opened up on social media. How amazing 💕 . . University has done more than give me a career, it has made me confident enough to reach for what I've always wanted to be 🌍

OCD lies and says that if you perform a safety behavior (compulsion) that you will feel better. This “feeling better” only lasts momentarily before the anxiety comes back and gets stronger and louder over time. As much as you can, resist falling into the trap of safety behaviors. Starting a morning with anxiety would typically set the tone for the rest of the day. I would struggle with the fact that yesterday, I felt fine and now, I feel so panicked. I refused to accept that today. On my way to work I listened to the podcast, Your Anxiety Toolkit by Kimberly Quinlan and these two simple words have change my perspective on the day and have helped calm the panic from some of the intrusive thoughts that cloud my mind. This feeling.. this horrible feeling is only “for now”. For now I feel uncomfortable, but this will pass. My last few posts have been more on the positive side but the reality of recovery is that its not all fun and games!! I am starting to find my therapy sessions extremely difficult. My natural response is to shut down 😔 i feel really bad because my therapist is trying so hard to support me but I'm not really giving anything back 😣. Due to how things ended at my ip placement its even more hard for me to "try things differently" and to believe things can be better. Also i have been warned that if my bmi reaches a certain point they will be looking into ip placements again ( i don't want this) so we have this window of opportunity; of where my bmi is at the moment to this certain point to slow things down and maintain my weight. Clarity → Practice → Growth. . We’re always on the lookout for shortcuts in life, aren’t we? 🔎 . It’s natural to want to take the shortest path toward what’s most important to you - overcoming a challenge, achieving a goal, whatever. . During my challenge with health anxiety, desperate for relief, I grasped at quick fixes for my symptoms. A diagnosis. A miracle cure. A magic pill. Eliminating this or adding that to my diet. 💊 . It wasn’t until I took a step back, looked at the big picture, observed what was really going on, what I was doing about it, and why it wasn’t working. . I even considered the possibility that I had the problem all wrong: Maybe I was exactly what my doctor told me I was - healthy. 👩🏼‍⚕️💚 . CLARITY! ✨ . Discovering the REAL problem took self-compassion, introspection and humility. . It was hard - but until I knew what the problem REALLY was, no solution was possible. . Finally, I could break it down into many smaller, more solvable problems and create an action plan for each. ✔️✔️✔️ . PRACTICE . The sum of my action plans became my practice. . Hard at first, but once practiced consistently well (I still haven’t mastered it - but I’m getting closer and closer every day). 💪🏼 . Finally, GROWTH. . Armed with a clear problem, a plan to solve it, and a daily practice that supports achievement of many goals, my life began to change FAST. 📈 . Yours will too. . But it all starts with getting CLARITY. . When’s the last time you stepped out of your daily routine, and took time, alone, free of any distractions, to look inward? 👀 . Do you even know what problems you’re trying to solve, or are there possibilities you hadn’t considered? . Did you consider why you’re not getting the results you want (and need), and how you’re standing in your own way? 😐 . What’s your daily practice and it is completely aligned with your goals? . Whenever you’re feeling stuck, take the time. Make the time. . It doesn’t have to be long. It doesn’t even have to be all at once. But it must happen if you want to grow and improve your life. . Here is a personal post about a small victory in my mental health. A lot of people don’t know what a symptom of ADHD is impulsivity, and when you combine that with anxiety you get a lot of “omg this is such a good deal I need it right now or else I’ll never have the chance” and some hoarding/obsessive compulsive behavior gets thrown in for good measure. So I started bullet journaling this year and have always loved stickers, so now I have thousands of stickers. I had bought them in these separate books and every month/week was getting frustrated with flipping through all of them, plus the loose stickers, and decided to rip them all out and organize them. I think I spent two hours day of hyping myself up trying to tear out the first page. I got through all the stickers and then I felt immediate regret and was upset with myself for doing something I didn’t ~need~ to do. My plan to put them into sheet protectors in a standard binder was also terribly thought out and a huge failure. Now comes the victory! Normally I would have had a complete breakdown with sobbing and questioning every decision I’ve made in my life. This is not an exaggeration. But THIS time I used some CBT skills to remind myself why I wanted to do this and that in the grand scheme of things, it meant nothing. I looked over the internet for a better solution, found it and executed it, and now I am actually feeling good about going through with this. So if you read all of this, thanks. Conventional research indicates that a combination of psychotherapy and medication has far more efficacy than either on their own. The medication assists in stabilizing symptoms sufficiently so the individual can work through their pain and also be in a place where they can apply new coping strategies. In our current state of affairs, we see a lot of individuals getting an antidepressant from their general practitioner without getting additional therapeutic services. This functions to keep the individual “ok enough” to keep going without making any other changes. This is not sustainable over time. I did an interview w @club_mental about the fascinating @hbo show Sharp Objects (swipe for our conversation) about the role of self-cutting and self/mutilation as an attempt to self-soothe. It also just brings me back to a topic I frequently discuss both in the office and in media interviews is the idea of distress tolerance and emotional regulation. What are we doing to nurture ourselves and turn the volume down in times of crisis? The idea of crisis is very individual and varies from person to person. Sometimes people beat themselves because the incident that has them shook up is “something so small”- ie- the hot tinder date that didn’t follow-up. Cutting yourself some slack (no pun intended) is helpful. Stop judging your thoughts- allow them to be fleeting. @club_mental is a content venture started by the fab @aklaird, former Editor-in-Chief of @womenshealthmag. SOCIAL ANXIETY & PERFECTIONISM Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterised by a marked or persistent fear of social or performance situations in which embarrassment might occur. Perfectionism is a personality trait associated with social anxiety. Research by Hoffmann (2007) links expectations of others high standards links with an underestimation of your ability to achieve such social goals. Eg. Socially anxious people perceive the expected performance standards to be much higher than non anxious people, and their capability to be less ( negative self bias) Perfectionism increases anxious rumination about the self and contributes to anxiety symptoms. It can lead to avoidance behaviours, panic feelings, reduced self esteem and some phobias. Social anxiety and perfectionism are manageable if acknowledged as problematic and treated by a professional. CBT is one psychological technique that may be helpful. You don't have to feel alone, there are treatments that will improve your social confidence.
