Since joining NYRO I've been experimenting lots with essential oils. At the start it was simply for the scent (I'm not a huge fan of candles! 🤷‍♀️) Today I'm diffusing lemongrass. Meet Cathryn, “On the 30th of September 2015 I was given the devastating news that I had breast cancer. Approximately 1 hour after arriving home my husband and I received a phone call from the nursing home where my mother-in-law lived asking us to go as soon as possible because my mother in law had deteriorated dramatically. She passed away later that evening. We hadn’t got our heads around the fact I had cancer so my head was in total turmoil and also now had a funeral to arrange. . On the 27th October 2015 I was admitted for a full mastectomy reconstruction surgery and 7 lymph nodes removed. It was shortly after the surgery that I heard about Cancer Support Yorkshire through a leaflet I found in my cancer pack. . Getting in touch with them was the best thing I have done, by the time I went for my first visit I was at an all-time low. After talking to them about how I felt they put a support plan together which involved Counselling, Complementary Therapies including Indian Head Massage and Aromatherapy. I also attended groups for Meditation and Relaxation, without their help and support I dread to think where I would be.” . Cancer has given Cathryn a brand new perspective on life. She said, “I have a new positive attitude towards life, I take each day as it comes and I live life to the full.” She supported Cancer Support Yorkshire by participating in events like Firewalk and races. Ever feel stuck or heavy? ⊹ . . That’s totally fine! I had a tough morning myself. Honor your feelings. Be gentle with where you are. But then move it! ⊹ . . Āyurvedic theory and medicine reminds us to treat with opposite qualities. For example, are you feeling hot? Then eat cooling cucumbers and drink coconut water instead of eating hot spicy soup or drinking ginger tea. Makes sense right!? ⊹ . . So, feeling stuck or heavy? Invite in the qualities of lightness and movement! ⊹ . . Go on a walk, dance in your kitchen, practice some mindful breathing or get onto your yoga mat. Day 2 Repost @born_to_walk ・・・ Before we start getting into the detail of gait, we need to break into some of the jargon - and there’s a lot of it! But, we have plenty of time to take it easy. To make sense of the EMG readings that will come over the next week we need to be familiar with the gait cycle and the percentages at which certain events take place. Like any model, the percentage breakdown is an average and not absolute but it provides descriptive tools with which we can start to see, assess, and intervene when necessary. A full stride (image 1) is made up of two major phases - stance (image 2) and swing (image 3). The full stride takes us from heel strike, shown with the right lower limb in purple to heel strike on the right again. The process of heel strike to heel strike is cyclical and so 0% and 100% are kind of the same points - the beginning of one stride is the end of the previous. For that reason, it might be useful to see the line as a loop by printing the line out and folding the paper around on itself to let the two heel strike moments meet. Stance phase is when we have the right foot in contact with the ground and this lasts from heel strike (0%) to toe-off (62%, shown in image 2). Some of you might be more familiar with the term ‘push-off’ but I dislike that for various reasons we will explore as we progress with these posts, to my mind, there are subtle but important differences. Following toe-off at 62% we enter the swing phase as the right lower limb swings forward until it strikes the ground again at 100%. Where heel strike is the beginning and the end of the stride, toe-off marks the end of stance and beginning of swing phase. A repost from James @born_to_walk ・・・ Quite a few people contacted us to ask when the new edition of Born to Walk will be available and what are the differences between the 1st and 2nd editions. While many of us are holed up to help prevent the spread of Covid-19 I thought now is the ideal time for us to explore some concepts around gait. The first image in this series is my favourite in the whole book and the reason for the 2nd edition to be written. When the 1st edition came out a reviewer stated that we didn’t need to understand the elastic tissue because we ‘walk like an inverted pendulum’. The inverted pendulum model (a) was a textbook standard for many years but the reality (the black loops showing reaction forces, more later) and the model (the red line) go in the opposite directions - simply, the model doesn’t work. The spring-mass system (b) gives a much better match between reality and model. So what are the springs? We can explore those as we progress through the series. The inverted pendulum idea became popular because of our straight legs - other animals of our bodyweight have numerous bends in their legs allowing them to use elastic tendons as a larger part of their movement strategy. Humans used straight legs like the heavier animals and reducing the angles in our legs increases our mechanical advantage - simply, it is more efficient to walk with a straight leg.
