‘Can I go a bit heavier?’ 😂 Seeking permission to lift more from @luke_j30. 😂 The happy face when you can lift the things again after recovering from an injury. 🙌🏼😃 . End of last year I strained a facet joint (ouchies). 😫 I could barely walk for a few days and I have to say it’s one of the most painful injuries I’ve had. The reason I injured myself is because I reduced training - due to a huge workload of study, full time work, coaching and organising an interstate move, I neglected core work, went in too heavy one day and did a lot of heavy unilateral work. With my weakened core, the unilateral work - and trying to maintain the lifting I had been doing ... I sustained the injury. It took a long time before I could physically (and mentally) start lifting again. Don’t neglect core work ... especially if you have a desk job, and be realistic about your physical capacity - there is nothing wrong with building up slowly if you are just starting out or have had a bit of a break. I used to stand like this. It was comfy. As a paed OT it’s a posture that I commonly see in kids with low tone, hips jutted forwards, pelvis posteriorly tilted, knees hyperextended, ribs thrusted.... but for a long time I hadn’t been self aware enough to notice it in myself. I was hanging off my joints, getting very tight in my hip flexors, putting all my weight through the front of my feet, not using my glutes and getting shortening and tightening of my pelvic floor. My first pregnancy was the straw that broke the camels back.. well... pelvic floor. RYC™️ made me really think about my alignment and the relationship between core, glutes and pelvic floor. I *knew* strengthening my glutes would help my extremely hypertonic pelvic floor but living in this position with my hip jutted forward made it very difficult to access my glutes to get them to work at all. Moving my hips back over my ankles felt weird at first but hellooooo glutes! Now my body naturally adopts this posture (in pic 2) and I don’t have to think about it anymore and I finally have a good glute - PF - Core relationship. Alignment doesn’t mean you should be fearful of moving in and out of the alignment or trying to maintain this posture every minute of the day - our bodies need lots of varied movements to thrive. But maybe don’t live every moment of every day in a posture like this one. Pic 2 is a pic of my hips moved back over my ankles where I’m able to access my glutes, pelvic floor is in a more functional length and lumbar spine not all jammed up. Core weakness could be the root cause behind your groin strain⁣ ⁣ Core weakness has been associated with having the predictive ability for the recurrence of a number of injuries from lower backs (McGill, 2002) to ankles (Wilkerson et al, 2012).⁣ ⁣ We're not entirely sure why yet. The leading theory is that the lack of a stable core means greater movement between all of the working parts - greater movement means poorer control which is what in the end potentially leads to an increased risk of injury. ⁣ ⁣ Can the same be said for groin injuries? Preliminary research is trending towards yes.⁣ ⁣ Jansen et al, 2010 looked at the thickness of the core musculature in 42 athlete's with a pulled groin vs 23 healthy controls. The findings? Core thickness in the injured athletes was on average only ~85% that of the uninjured (4.15mm vs 4.9). ⁣ ⁣ Would a core stability training program then help reduce the risk of injury? Melegati et al (2013) looked at lower extremity muscle strain injury rates in an Italian major league soccer team in 2010 and again in 2011 after implementing a core strengthening program that was done before every practice.⁣ ⁣ The findings: injury rates decreased by 28% (from 59% to 31%) and number of days absent due to injury dropped by a staggering ~66% (from 106 to 36).⁣ ⁣ Recurring groin strains despite rehab? Mula Bandha can be expressed in two distinct ways. Ha Mula Bandha is a compressive (high pressure) co-activation of the circular (or circumferential) muscles of the lower trunk. This muscle group is essentially the muscles of forced abdominal exhalation (MFAE). Thanks Mula Bandha is an expansive (low pressure) co activation of opposing muscles of the lower trunk. Both of these Bandhas can increase Spinal stability & trunk strength by increasing Intra Abominal Pressure & torque of the Pelvic Floor. This can be achieved in both cases by movement of the diaphragm toward the abdomen. The Diaphragm can move towards the Abdomen either due to diaphragmatic activation movement through voluntary compression of the chest (Ha Uddiyana Bandha) while retaining the breath inside (which is essentially the Valsalva Manoeuvre). The exercise that your all seeing here forms Mula Bandha. It is Circular Pike Towel Sideways Slide. Hip openers take patience, time and you need to be completely relaxed, or you can hurt yourself in the process! So, this afternoon I had about 40 mins to spare and that’s exactly what I focused on! I did a few of the Marichyasana family to warm up. I absolutely love twists and binds🙌🏻 I also did the modification for today Standing #marichyasanaA or #Flamingopose and a version of #BirdofParadisepose that I love, where you keep your bound leg parallel to the ground💗 I did some Leg behind the head knots with my back on the ground 🙌🏻 At the end I attempted Marichyasana H and it was a no 👎🏻 I’ll tell you what did happen tho...my right leg stayed behind my head comfortably for me to knot on the ground 🙌🏻 that is a major thing for me👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 since my injury a few years ago, my leg wouldn’t stay without the help of my hand holding it in place!
