I came across this postcard at the weekend from Daphne du Maurier. This was prior to our meet up in 1978 and I did indeed call and she was not away. The sheer joy of spending several hours with the great lady comes flooding back. At Christmas, I raise a glass of Croft Original to you, although the bottle was empty when I left you , the journey back to my hotel that September evening a blur. #DaphneduMaurier

Today I’m with my old friend Doug. We travelled to Cornwall in 1971 with guitars and little else, sang some local clubs in the far west and spent Christmas day on the beach at Sennen Cove, deciding on a swim and nearly getting swept out to sea. One of the best guitarists I have had the pleasure of working with, a great guy who could sink three pints to my one and sadly no longer with us. We wrote this together after the Isle of Wight concert. I’ll play it for us later. In the fresh days of beauty, I first saw you smiling Your hair like a cloak hung in golden strands was Lying round your head like a halo on the rug where we reclined Don’t be sad little friend just be free Mikeanthonywrites.com

Jon and Iso exchanged smiles and glances through the song, both turning to where Kerensa was sitting with her friends as the chorus hit the punch line then exploded into another unaccompanied section. ........And if you can’t be with the one you love, honey Love the one you’re with Love the one you’re with Book 3 Kingdom of the South. Brown Willy, the highest point on the moor, just a little higher than where they were sitting, sat away to their left and Jon knew Jamaica Inn, etched into history forever by Daphne du Maurier’s book of the same name, could be found beyond that. Thinking of the book, he fancied he could see the top of Altarnun Church, where the Rev Davy, vicar of the parish and one of the ‘baddies’ in the novel had resided. ‘Jon’s probably adapted it to suit Iso. He’s done that with some of the CSN songs too. Yes, her voice has character hasn’t it, bit of a break on certain phrases, very appealing. Listen underneath though, Jon’s pinning the whole thing together. Now of course, you get the guitar solo, young Danny will wring it dry.’ Sure enough, Danny hit the solo and it cut through cleanly and crisply.

His euphoria in the moment drove him up over the headland in the stark sunlight of a perfect June morning, an azure blue Atlantic stretching to a seemingly solid horizon where the ocean dipped away to distant Newfoundland. The air was laced with the heady scent of spring flowers, fresh grass and Iso’s hair and skin as he held her in his mind, feeling her physically and spiritually engulf him. He ran to the top of the slope, the engine house of the Penryn mine immediately below, the next bay just visible, a fringe of golden sand glowing above eager waves, gleaming white as they caught the sunlight. - Extract book 4 www.mikeanthonywrites.com

Tim laid out his pad and paper and described what was down in the tunnel. ‘It looks like a natural subterranean river, the water running rather more slowly than I thought it might on that slope. The water disappears below the base of the house and swings round to the left side. By the time it it’s under Chy Nans, it must be way below the level of the cellar. In the house, you wouldn’t know it was there.

The necklace was removed from its pouch, a kaleidoscope of light spinning around the room as the stones danced. Jon told Iso what Tim had said about its probable origins and it was strange to consider that India was the most likely source of the diamonds, whereas South Africa had been the focus since they had seen granny. - Extract Book 4

It’s very frustrating that my characters are learning and singing songs at such a rate that they’re dying for some new material- apart from the 1000’s of ones that haven’t sung yet. Fleetwood Mac are big favourites and, as the stories have now reached 1980, surely Stevie Nicks must have had Gypsy in her head before 1982 so Jon and his friends could get to grips with it. And as for the gorgeous tracks on Tango in the night , they’re a good seven years off. I hear the brilliant Stevie Winwood has a new single on the horizon for late 1980 or thereabouts. Looking forward to Jon Penryn getting to grips with While you see a chance.

40 years ago in September 1978, I was privileged to spend a wonderful afternoon with Daphne du Maurier at Kilmarth near Par in Cornwall. I had written to the great lady asking if I might call on her while I was in Cornwall, towards the end of my 6th summer season there. During one of my life highlights, we talked about her books, the films based on them, she asked me to sing to her, we emptied a bottle of Croft Original and I was completely entranced by the magical turn of phrase with which she graced our conversation. A truly great lady and a memory I treasure. She loved Cornwall, as I do and if I am able to inject some of that love into my books, I will be proud and I hope she will be pleased. There is more on this in the blog if you’d like to join me there.

Today I am very proud to say my centena marking 100 years since Armistice Day has been published as part of a project by Imperial War Museum & 26 Writers to recognise and celebrate the lives of 100 people who lived between 1914 and 1918. My grateful thanks to Dayna Lawand her husband Jim for telling and trusting me with the tale of Jim's great grandfather, Private Edmund Law and his wife Annie Barron. Their story must have been repeated time and time again across Britain, Germany and the world - wives without husbands, children with no fathers. Save me was ringing in his ears as he approached the city and he was reminded that the roots of Queen sat proudly in Truro, Roger Taylor the drummer being born and bred in the area, forming his first band, The Reaction, playing local gigs before moving to London, there to meet up with Brian May and Freddie Mercury to form ‘Smile’. The West Briton newspaper were responsible for printing the first ever advertisement for the Freddie Mercury fronted Queen at PJ’s in Pydar Street, Truro, and they had played their first gig about a month before in the city. Below the roof fall, down the steps to the lower chapel, beyond the solid wall stretched another narrow tunnel and there, entombed within a low chamber behind yet another wall of rock, six large, sealed lead caskets lay in the darkness, their contents destined never to be gazed upon unless someone with faith and resolve were to step forward and free them from their resting place. But did such a person exist? Extract from the prologue Book 3

‘Pray follow me’ said the prior, starting up the steps, the knight in close attendance, the cloying intensity of the place unsettling. At the top of the stairs they entered a wide chamber some ten feet in height, with an altar on which burnt two candles, bright by comparison with the pitch dark stillness all around. An alcove on the far right was just visible due to soft light from two small lamps, the flames casting ghostly shadows as the men entered the side chapel. Extract from the prologue Book 3

Reaching the cave arch as the first spikes of stinging rain arrowed down, Jon knew exactly where to find the ideal refuge. Inside the cave to the lee of the roaring wind, he sat on fine dry sand staring at the creaming breakers along the shore, doing nothing, feeling something indefinable and thinking a jumble of uncoordinated thoughts. Words were not required but music was. - Extract Book 3

So all day long the noise of battle roll'd Among the mountains by the winter sea; Until King Arthur's table, man by man, Had fallen in Lyonnesse about their Lord, King Arthur: then, because his wound was deep, The bold Sir Bedivere uplifted him, Sir Bedivere, the last of all his knights, And bore him to a chapel nigh the field, A broken chancel with a broken cross, That stood on a dark strait of barren land. On one side lay the ocean, and on one Lay a great water, and the moon was full.

Clear sky in the east was under attack from an army of energetic black clouds bearing down on their enemy with a sense of purpose. Within a few minutes, the battle was won and, as if to celebrate, the rain fell from the victors, yet still the redness slid under the dark blanket for a while longer, giving the sand an appearance of a blood-stained battlefield - Extract from Kevrinek Book 3 #cornwall #cornish #kernow #cornishwriter #cornishbook #books #ilovereading #newbook #music #bookswithmusic #read #kindle #romance #novel #book #coastal #beach #southwest #creamteas #truro #newquay #bodmin #east #storm #battle #sand #beach

The first thing that greeted his weary eyes in the pale morning light was the crest above the fireplace, a worn stone shield, the Penryn Family crest, now grey but no doubt emblazoned with colour at some time. The quietness in this snowy world was eerie yet somehow comforting. The room had grown cold again and his thoughts flashed back to the events of last night and the drama of his arrival. THE SEA! the sea! the open sea! The blue, the fresh, the ever free! Without a mark, without a bound, It runneth the earth’s wide regions round; It plays with the clouds; it mocks the skies; Or like a cradled creature lies. I ’m on the sea! I ’m on the sea! I am where I would ever be; With the blue above, and the blue below, And silence wheresoe’er I go; If a storm should come and awake the deep, What matter? I shall ride and sleep. Leaving the Capri on slightly higher ground, he picked his moment to run to the front door and dive inside, slamming it shut as a large wave sent a cascade against the cottage, water gushing under the door and into the hallway. Temporarily detached from self-inflicted traumas, Jon sank thankfully into the cosy comfort of a warm fire, a bottle of whisky and his trusty guitar, a haze of alcohol and song insulating him against the roaring waves outside and his racing thoughts within. #cornwall #cornish #kernow #cornishwriter #cornishbook #books #ilovereading #newbook #music #bookswithmusic #read #kindle #romance #novel #book #coastal #beach #southwest #creamteas #truro #newquay #bodmin #fireplace #story
