What is a Sound Bath? 🛀 . . Some people who come across the term Sound Bath think it has something to do with being in a bath tub, totally understandable! 😊😊 . . Contrary to that, Sound Baths or sound meditations are where you listen to the sounds created by singing bowls and other instruments which in turn is like 'bathing in sound'. During sound baths/meditations, you are either laying down or sitting upright. Your eyes are closed as you fully immerse in the moment. . . It is a great way of practicing how to be present because your mind naturally gravitates to these ethereal sounds as opposed to wondering off with other thoughts. . . So next time you hear a sound bath, picture yourself laying down in a calming room with ethereal music played to you as you go on a journey. . . Our truth changes and evolves as we grow and change. This awareness is often too scary for most people to embrace. If we admit that truth changes, that means we have to be willing to explore our own beliefs. What are the truths in your life you’re holding onto, like summer, as the leaves begin to fall from the trees? What’s keeping you stuck in seasons past, and how can you surrender to the changes in your life? As we move into the new year, it’s a great opportunity to spend time in quiet contemplation to listen more consciously to our desires. Perhaps you're feeling BURNT OUT? 🔥 🔥 . . Workplace stress is so commonly talked about but I realised not many people tell us what burning out actually means and how to recognise it.. . . After going so hard at my job for years and years, I reached a point where I felt terrible everyday... It was so hard to understand what I was going through since not much had changed yet I felt different about it. . . I felt tired all the time, emotionally exhausted and lost my vibrant self. I felt more sensitive as little things would stir me, more frustration as I wanted to escape my day to day routine and more health problems came on. . . There are many ways to deal with this feeling and everyone will be different and require different remedies. I wanted to share the two I personally focused on: 1. I took relaxation really seriously! I consciously made effort to be present when I was 'relaxing' and I made sure I didn't talk or think about work or negative things. 2. I cultivated my personal life outside of work. At night times and weekends, I would choose to do things that nurtured me and brought out the creative side in me. I made an effort to create/make things from scratch or find ways to creatively express myself in ways that I usually wouldn't. . . Recovering from burning out is a journey and also an opportunity to learn more about ourselves and just how strong we are in times of hardship. . . If you are feeling burnt out, my heart goes out to you and know that there is a community of like minded people. CHANGE ✨ Some of you know I used to be a lawyer. I worked for major international Law firms, doing something incredibly specific (International Tax Law, anyone?) and when I quit, people called me crazy. "How can you leave such an amazing job? You're IN! You're successful, and will be even more." (If you're not familiar with the legal world, International Tax Law is a niche - quite hard to break into). But I knew it wasn't for me. At some point, after many sleepless nights working (these firms work young lawyers to the bone, testing their commitment and their ability to act under pressure), I collapsed. I found myself in the hospital with a serious kidney infection. I was told I needed to rest for 15 days. And so I was literally forced by my body to slow down and take a break. I did Yoga everyday, I meditated, I rested. And then a thought started to get clearer - one that felt blurry at first, but as I meditated more, started to become quite clear. I wasn't meant to be doing that; my life needed to CHANGE. And so I quit. ✨ This ability to make a change - a very big change - came from an inner strength that we call INTUITION. It is sort of a sixth sense or inner voice that is almost like a whisper. At moments of quietude, it will guide you, it will teach you how to be more of yourself. ✨ I don't mean to say that everyone working in the corporate setting should quit and become a yoga teacher (this was my path, not necessarily yours), but I do feel that we can all clear our minds to connect with our inner guidance, with our INTUITION. And then, make the CHANGES that need to be made to improve our lives - any aspect of our lives: work, career, relationships, health, family. ✨ Inspired by this experience, I'm bringing an offering to you - any of you - that can be done from anywhere in the world (Alo Brasil!). Ayurvedic Travel Tip: Carry a small bottle of black sesame oil with you while you travel. Give yourself a full body oil massage (Abhyanga) once you arrive at your destination. If not full body, then at least massage the crown of your head, temples, ears, nostrils and the soles of the feet. This will maintain you feeling settled, the nerves nourished... and that Vata in check.

I know I’m always complaining about aeroplane ‘food’ - as my Ayurvedic teacher in India says - it’s AMA in a box (ama = an Ayurvedic term for toxic plaque - a biochemical impurity.) Maybe it’s because I’m continually flying and exposed to it after lecturing on preventing non-communicable disease through nutrition that it’s highlighting how bad it is (and airport food options in general btw.) But seriously, if you can do some quick prep and avoid eating it, you would be supporting your body significantly. Here is a simple, healthy breakfast hack for travelling - Overnight Oats. The night before travelling, add oats to a portable, well sealed container (old jars work great), mix in some spices like cinnamon and cardamom, add raisins/dried fruit, some berries, nuts and seeds - whatever you like really and top with a milk of your choice (I use almond). Put in the fridge overnight to soak and remember to grab it out before leaving the next morning. Done! If you wanted to warm it up, you could add some hot water before eating. Delicious, nutrient dense and energy building. It’ll leave you feeling much better than a soggy microwaved ham and cheese pizza for breaky.

It takes strength and courage to lead with this quality in a world that has a lot of crap in it. Let's face it... it does. My bubble burst a long time ago. I use to think that we were surrounded by kind souls. This was not the case. I came across people who purely mastered the art of manipation and deception. Meditation ✨ (I’ve been practicing and teaching this the past few weeks. So interesting when students share and how everyone’s similar experience is extremely different. This sharing is a great teacher of how our minds interpret the world through our own lens of experience and can teach us a lot about interaction and communication with others.) Imagine a calm, clear & peaceful lake. What trees and plants border the lake? What is the season & time of day? Notice how still the water is and what it reflects. Sit with this for a few moments. When a thought pops up think of it like a rock or stone that is thrown into the lake. It disturbs the calm and creates a ripple effect on the water surface. Then notice as the rock hits bottom sediment is stirred up. Imagine picking the rock up. Put it back on the shore and watch the sediment settle and the water calm. Stay with this until the next rock needs to be collected and returned to the shore.

Did you know only 24% of women and 15% of men meet the Australian guidelines for both fruit and veg intake per day? 51% of Australians are not meeting the guidelines for fruit. 65% are not meeting the guidelines for vegetables. (CSRIO, 2016) It’s recommended we need 5 serves of veg per day, and 2 serves of fruit for minimum nutrient requirement. I would say we actually need more for optimal health; the specific amount depends on your unique constitution. These stats are alarming as it’s the simplest and easiest way to not only feel great but prevent and heal disease. 1 serve of veg is equivalent to 1/2 cup of cooked green or orange veg like broccoli, carrots or pumpkin, ½ cup cooked dried or canned beans, peas or lentils, 1 cup of fresh greens or 1/2 medium starchy veg. Ideally eating a rainbow daily to ensure a range of nutrients and phytochemicals. Are you hitting these targets? In clinical practice, the majority of my clients aren’t!
