Landmine pressing progression as a substitute for overhead pressing for overhead athletes or people with limited shoulder mobility/a history of shoulder problems. Why the Landmine Press is a great substitute for direct overhead pressing: 1) can still train a shoulder flexion pattern without pain. 2) Teaches proper scapular protraction by finishing with a “reach” at the end which is great for improving shoulder health. 3) As you progress from Half Kneeling➡️Standing➡️Split Stance there will be an increased demand on shoulder, core, and hip stability, all things people need more of :) 4-Landmine Split Jerks are a great power variation for anyone that has mobility limitations and cannot Olympic lift as it forces you to sit back into your hips in order to properly transfer force from the lower to upper body explosively. This is a great exercise for football players (think Le’veon Bell stiff arm). Nutrition with a capital N... It occurred to me the other day that I have Never Not been trying to lose weight my whole entire life. !!! It made me sad...but as I began to ponder this further what turned my thinking around was this (stay with me guys, it's a long thought): My health and fitness journey has evolved from crash dieting and obsessive cardio in my youth...to tracking macros and seeking balance to support my heavy lifting. When I first started lifting about 4 years ago, I would look in the mirror and just ask Why?!....why wasn't it easier to be leaner? Why isn't being active and fit enough to make my body composition what I want it to be?  I hear my clients mirror that sentiment constantly. The answer is that you have to visit the other half of the equation just as seriously...Nutrition with a capital N.  Up to that point, I never invested in practicing the Energy In/Energy Out concept.  I was really good at the Energy Out side of things, but never measured Energy In- aka food/fuel/macros.  after developing an awareness of my food for over a year now I am not 100% where I want to be yet, but daily I become happier with my body and I feel my intentions shift....I am less and less concerned about the scale and now more fascinated with how I feel eating just enough so that my body's systems run EFFICIENTLY. That's a thought, huh? What is the calorie and macro balance where I can perform optimally in training, keep up energy through the day to play with my dogs, live a full life, and be a Lean Mean Warrior for many years to come. Can you guess which chocolate bar I bought? Answer, Extra dark. Why, bc it had the least total calories, lowest fat(even though I don’t care), highest sodium(which I like), the highest fiber, and the highest protein. Below, I have copy&pasted some info on the benefits of cocoa from @thenutritional_advocate. Enjoy! #Repost ✅Cocoa beans contain high levels of the flavonoid subtype, flavanols. The primary mechanism through which these compounds improve cognition acutely is by increasing blood flow to the brain by inducing endothelial nitric oxide. ✅There are several mechanisms for chronic effects, particularly the interaction with signalling pathways which stimulate the growth and development of new brain cells (neurogenesis) and protect against neural inflammation. ✅In this trial, healthy adults tested 2hrs after ingesting 720mg cocoa flavanols showed improved memory, visual acuity and reaction time. ✅These effects are consistent with other acute trials showing improvements cognitive function, and gives controlled trial support to longer term studies finding a protective effect to regular cocoa flavanol consumption. ✅Dose? The trials use doses of flavanols equal to 20-40g min.80% dark chocolate. 20g is just 110kcal, meaning this is a food-based intervention which can easily be incorporated daily. ✅You’re also killing two birds with one stone: the endothelial nitric oxide inducing effects of cocoa flavanols underlie it’s blood pressure reducing and cardioprotective effects. ✅This is an example of a food-based recommendation (along with 125g blueberries) that I make to clients all the time. It’s simple, evidence-based nutrition. ✅The wider context is that I personally find nothing more nauseating than the current acceptance of neurodegenerative disease as a part of aging. ✅Like fuck it is. And we need nutraceutical tools at our disposal to help preserve cognitive function across the lifespan. ✅If you need to start on the 70%, fine. On set for the "Four Horsewomen of the Apocalypse" photo project I was a part of on Friday. My trainer friend Jessie was "conquest" and trying to stay warm by making a tent on her horse with her cape. I was "pestilence", with the green cape under my coat. Today Marks day 1 of my 7 day series on “student / office worker syndrome”‼️ . 💡Even though I will be breaking these down into 7 different ideologies, they all have an antagonist muscle that needs to be addressed in pairs‼️ For these subocciptals, it’s antagonist is #2 - Deep neck flexors . I’ve decided to break down one part of this dysfunction, so that you can start to identify: ✅The most common areas that affected your body personally from sitting ✅Signs and symptoms that these areas may be an issue for you ✅Ways to relieve the issue, either with: stretching(static, dynamic,PNF), release(lax ball, traction bands, foam rollers) mobilize, or strengthen the given area . The Subocciptals are a group of four muscles that lie at the base of the back of your head (occiput), named: ▶️Rectus capitus posterior major ▶️Rectus capitus posterior minor ▶️Obliquus capitus superior ▶️Obliquus capitus inferior . Why do we have issues here⁉️ . 💡With our general lethargic posture, we slouch forward 💡In order for our heads to looks straight ahead, we have to tilt our heads backwards (activating these muscles) 💡Given the small finer orientation - these muscles fatigue quickly‼️ . As a result, this group of muscles can shorten, tighten, and also put pressure on your vertebral artery (main artery that supplies blood to the brain) . The best way that I’ve found to self release the tension is with your: ▶️finger tips (which hold a lot of sensation, so it’s easier to “feel” things”) ▶️foam roller . Single Leg RDLs for hamstring rehab. Last week I pulled a hammy doing some sprint drills; I’m confident I pulled the hammy Bc I was hungover and dehydrated, which is completely my fault. So I’ve spent the last couple week rehabbing it. This is one of those injuries that can be a pest and recurrence of hamstring strains is high, especially if not treated properly. Rest and icing is only beneficial for the first few days after injury while the tissue repairs, then you have to start stressing it to properly remodel the new tissues. I started my rehab with bilateral eccentric work and have worked up through this SLDL progression. Start with both knees bent-this puts the least amount of stress on the injured tissue. As the muscle tissue starts to remodel and gets stronger, progress to back leg straight, front leg bent to increase demand on front hammy, and then to both legs straight for the most amount of stress on front hamstring. Once you can work through an 8-10-12 progression, start loading it up and doing some dynamic work to continue moving back to full strength and reduce the likelihood or re-injury.
