A miraculous shot by @optcorp ------------------------------- Reposted from @optcorp "I’m really excited about this image as it was a tough one to achieve. This is the still expanding shockwave of a supernova that occurred 40,000 years ago. Officially known as Sharpless 240, it is also known as the Spaghetti Nebula. I captured an image of it a few months ago, but wanted to go after it again given how challenging it was to bring out any details. The nebula is extremely faint, so I had to push the exposures to 30 minutes each and combine data from an entire night to be able to share this view with you. This nebula is massive at an estimated 150 light years across. The shock wave bubble could contain the entire Elephant’s Trunk and surrounding nebula inside of it! It is 3,000 light years away from Earth and the shockwave is expanding through space at 30 kilometers per second, ionizing and creating the glow we see in the interstellar gasses in its path. 📷: @gazingoutwards #deepskyastrophotography #deepskyobject#natgeospace #astrophoto #spacephotography #spacephotos #nebulas #keeplookingup #science #solarsystem #spacespot #astrophotographer#sharpless240 #spaghettinebula #astronomy #astrophotography#Eazyduzit - #regrann

M101 - The Pinwheel Galaxy. Take two. 😁 A couple of weeks ago I made my first attempt at the Pinwheel Galaxy, and unfortunately made the mistake of shooting at f/12 and then trying to compensate by boosting the ISO up to 25600. Lesson learned lol. We've had some pretty good weather lately so I moved on to a couple more targets but had to come back to this one to do it justice. I managed to collect over 4 hours of data Thursday night and did a lot of work to highlight the detail in M101 and the surrounding companion galaxies while keeping the stars from bloating and appearing overexposed. Still have a lot to learn, but I'm incredibly happy with how this turned out. Fun facts: M101 is located approximately 21 million light-years away and is near twice the size of the Milky Way with around a trillion stars. The spiral structure appears warped due to gravitational interactions with the companion galaxies (shown in the wide/annotated version). -- Acquisition details: Orion 120mm f/5 Doublet Refractor (600mm FL) Canon SL1 (Unmodified) SkyTech L-Pro Max Broadband Filter iOptron SkyGuider Pro 300x light frames @ 1 min, ISO 800 40x dark frames 40x bias frames 10x flat frames 10x flat dark frames Total exposure time after integration: 4 hours, 11 minutes. 🐝✨ The Beehive Cluster 🐝✨ An open cluster in Cancer known since ancient times. Visible to the naked eye, it is one of the nearest open clusters to our Solar System at 610 light years away. Read on for some history! "Ancient Chinese skywatchers saw this nebulous object as a ghost or demon riding in a carriage, and likened its appearance to a "cloud of pollen blown from willows." It is the main celestial object in the 23rd lunar mansion (Hsiu Kuei or Xiu Gui) of ancient Chinese astrology. The Praesepe appeared on Johann Bayer's charts as "Nubilum" ("Cloudy") around 1600. But its true nature remained a mystery until Galileo looked at the cluster through his newly-invented telescope, in 1609. He reported: "The nebula called Praesepe is not one star only, but a mass of more than 40 small stars." ⚙️: Captured with my ZWO ASI183 MC Pro camera and Celestron 8-inch RASA, on an Orion Atlas EQ-G mount. 96 x 20-second exposures (32 minutes) stacked. 📷: @space_damien

Messier 81 and 82 - Through Some Clouds This is an image I’ve wanted to shoot for a while, but I never knew if it would be possible under suburban light pollution. Messier 81 and 82 are a beautiful galaxy pairing in the northern sky. One interesting thing about this area is that, from our vantage point, we look through the haze of the Integrated Flux Nebulae (IFN). The IFN, or also called galactic cirrus, are clouds of dust particles above and below the plane of the Milky Way galaxy. These clouds are illuminated by all the starlight from within, (kind of like how clouds on Earth look illuminated at night when you are in a bright city). No matter what we do, we can’t escape light pollution ... because this is it on a galactic scale!! Image details: Celestron 8” RASA ZWO ASI533MC Pro Astronomik L-1 UV/IR cut 5.9 hours total exposure (707x30s) 📷: @thevastreaches #deepskyastrophotography #deepskyobject#natgeospace #astrophoto #spacephotography #spacephotos #keeplookingup #science #solarsystem #spacespot #astrophotographer #galaxy #m81 #m82

This is a perfect example of a galaxy that resembles in some ways to our own Milky Way. At about 30 million light-years away in the constellation Pavo its size is more than 200.000 light years, almost double the size of our galaxy. Likewise the galaxy has a highly packed, yellow central region that shows a slight barred structure containing the old stars. Moving away from the galactic core, one can see parts of the dusty spiral arms painted in shades of pink and blue; while the blue sites are full of young star clusters, the pink ones are regions of active star formation, indicating that the galaxy is still very active. Jupiter! 🤩 . . . Here is one of my first attempts at planetary photography. This was taken last summer and as usual I didnt have time to post it! This was actually taken with my iPhone and is a photo of the live view on my camera. My DSLR was hooked up to my scope and for some reason all my shots of it were noisy when down to surface level and you could only make out Jupiter as a fuzzy ball. I have no idea why and I tried many different settings but it was still full of noise. However I got a much better picture through the live view of my camera, probably because it acts like a webcam and webcams are great for planets, where you could make out the bands so I shot that. I am yet to use my Planetary Imaging Camera! Will try that soon. Nice weather coming up and I found some places in a great dark sky spot! 🌟⭐️🌟⭐️🌟⭐️🌟 #planetphotography #planetary #jupiterphoto #planetaryphotography #jupiter #space #universe #lightyears #galaxy #apolloanniversary #galaxies #astrophotography #deepsky #deepskyobject #deepskyastrophotography #dso #night #star #stars #cosmos #home

The bright central core of the Ring Nebula, M57, is a famous planetary nebula easily observed in a small telescope. It’s the remnants of a dying star, shedding material into space. Recently though I set myself the challenge of capturing the much less often imaged outer halos of M57. With a lot of deep narrowband exposure time over 4 different nights and almost as much processing afterwards, I was very happy to have achieved this. The inner halo (discovered in 1935) surrounds the familiar bright core and is around 5 times fainter than it. The outer halo is some 5000 times fainter than the central ring and was only recently discovered when space telescopes like Hubble were pointed at the object. You can make out faint wisps of this to the left and below the inner halo in particular. The galaxy in the top right is IC 1296, some 220 million light years away. The image is a combination of LRGB broadband filters for the bright core and Ha and Oiii narrowband filters for the outer halos, for a total of over 18 hours imaging time. As the object is very small I used the 2x drizzle function in DSS. Each stack was then processed separately and then combined in photoshop for further processing. Cette photo de la galaxie NGC 3628 n'est pas récente elle date de début 2019 . Je l'ai retrouvée en fouillant dans les archives de stockages de mes anciennes photos . Past week I was on an island named Texel, a location in the Netherlands with great dark sky conditions. I didn’t bring a telescope, I didn’t even bring a lightweight tracking mount. But I did bring my Canon 70D, a simple 50 mm f/1.8 lens and a regular tripod. What to do? Take many untracked 4 sec. exposures! I decided to be bold and take a picture of the milky way and nebulosity in Cygnus (the Swan) even though it’s still low above the horizon around midnight this time of year. I think it worked out pretty well, although the cheap lens clearly introduces large amounts of distortion :) #deepskyastrophotography #deepsky #cygnus #canon #plasticfantasic #texel #untrackedastrophotography #backyardastronomy #amateurastrophotographyezine

So I had another clear night last night and the kids fell asleep early enough for me to setup my gear before sunset, so that was a big plus! I wanted to try the Owl Nebula and found out that M108 was also in the frame, so it was a two for one! Lessons learned of the night: - So much easier to setup during daytime. - I was able to reuse my flats from the previous nights has nothing had moved in my imaging train - I can push to 4 minutes without any trailing, my guiding is not perfect (approx. 0.9) - PHD2 Polar Drift Align is a useful tool, but I need to figure out how to do the static polar align properly (having a hard time selecting the stars displayed on the image) - My DEC backlash is bad on the south side, need to figure out what is going on. Here’s the amazing Heart Nebula, IC 1805. IC 1805 lies some 7500 light years away, in the Perseus arm of the Galaxy. The loose open cluster Melotte 15 lies at the center of IC 1805. The nebula's gorgeous red color is driven by the radiation emanating Melotte 15. Only 1.5 million years old, this cluster contains a few bright stars nearly 50 times the Sun's mass, and many more containing only a fraction of a solar mass. Still working on a mosaic trying to combine another image from another session to give a bigger field of view. This is just 23 x 240s. No guiding yet, and it’s on my to do list to get a good guide cam. Comment a birthday emoji to wish our marketing director and photographer of this image @ianlauerastro a happy birthday! 🎉 Stardust Spanning a distance of six light years, the petals of the Iris Nebula show a blue color for the same reason our sky is blue: light scatter. As light from our star, the Sun, hits molecules in the atmosphere, the shorter (blue) wavelengths are scattered way more than other colors. So when you look at the sky away from the Sun, you only see the light that was redirected by the atmosphere into your line of sight: the blue light that was scattered! As the Sun sets, sunlight has to travel through more atmosphere to reach you. By the time that light reaches you, all of the blue light has scattered away, and you’re left with a spectacular sunset of red and orange colors. Image specs: 30x3 minute exposures 11” RASA telescope ZWO ASI294MC-Pro camera 📷: @ianlauerastro #deepskyastrophotography #deepskyobject#natgeospace #astrophoto #spacephotography #spacephotos #nebulas #keeplookingup #science #solarsystem #spacespot #astrophotographer #irisnebula #space

The Pinwheel Galaxy (also known as Messier 101, M101 or NGC 5457) is a face-on spiral galaxy distanced 21 million light-years away from us. This image is the result of 3 imaging sessions (May 13,14 and 19). Here are the lessons learned guiding for this session: - If you are using PHD2 and EQASCOM, read the PHD2 manual as the RA and DEC guiding rate need to bet set to a higher value in EQASCOM, my calibration now takes 2 minutes instead of 10 - In APT, if you get Dithering errors, double check that the guiding is set to “PHD2” and not “PHD” - DSS group stacking is not good, process each session individually and then stack the results. DSS get confused with calibration frames over multiple groups - If you use a DSLR, create a dark library using your previous imaging session and split your stacking based on sensor temperature. I had to split a night in two to use proper dark frames. This was taken using a modded T3I, can`t wait until my ASI 294 MC-Pro arrives! The Hamburger galaxy or NGC3628 is a galaxy from the Leo triplet and is quite perpendicular to us, which makes us almost see it as a disk. The dust bands can also be seen very well in this galaxy! This photo is an excerpt from my Leo triplet overall photo so I have an exposure time of a little over 10 hours with aperture 6, because I took this photo with my little one 200/1200 Newton. Unfortunately the weather has not been so good lately, which is why I can do very little astrophotography, but as soon as the weather gets better, many pictures with the 12 “Newton with aperture 4 follow! I hope you enjoy it. 🤓If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me!😉 🟢As always, this post can be shared! "I find astrophotography captivating because of the thrill of capturing something we can only see due to long exposure photography. I am inspired by amateur astronomers who have made new discoveries when photographing the night sky. I’ve shot this a number of times, but I think it really shines in Narrowband. This was taken with my ZWO ASI1600mm-c, Astrodon narrowband filters, Stellarvue SVQ86 and Orion Atlas mount. Processed as straight SHO (green reduced) in PixInsight. IC2177; The Seagull Nebula This is an image of the Seagull Nebula aka the Parrot Nebula in Monoceros. I captured it with narrowband filters to show the interaction of sulfur, hydrogen, and oxygen in this region of the sky. I really wanted to illustrate the use of “mapped color” also called “false color” to show off the interaction of the different elements within the Seagull Nebula. I used what is now a classic mapping called the “Hubble Palette” where SII is mapped to Red, Ha is mapped to Green, and OIII is mapped to Blue. Astrophotographers often just use the acronym SHO to make it clear they are using this mapping." Integration: Total: 6.1 hours Ha: 32 x 5 min OIII: 24 x 5 min SII: 18 X 5 min 📷: @nebulaphotosdotcom #deepskyastrophotography #deepskyobject#natgeospace #astrophoto #spacephotography #spacephotos #nebulas #keeplookingup #science #solarsystem #spacespot #astrophotographer#nebula #seagullnebula

Haven't been posting for a while but here's the California Nebula. I shot this early this year but I wasn't happy how it ended up so I guess I didn't want to post it then. But after a while I stopped being so critical towards it and now it is the right time to post it, so here it is. 🔭 Since it's getting too bright now in the evenings and nights to be able to shoot anything like this, I'm reprocessing some photos and I have some left to post in summer. Few months and then I'll be back shooting something new and something old but hopefully improved. 😁🌌 . . . Welcome to another OPT Team Takeover!⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ Today Nico Carver takes you into the details of his stunning nebulae captures like this Flying Bat and Squid Nebulae! Swipe to see his setup in action!⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ "I started the Flying Bat and Squid in bicolor (Ha and OIII) from home in an area with a lot of light pollution. Even though I was shooting in narrowband, I was finding it difficult to get usable results even after stacking many hours of data⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ I went on a road trip to see and photography the total solar eclipse in 2017. Along the way, I camped at dark sky parks and decided to just focus on the Flying Bat and Squid because I became determined to capture it well. I found that by capturing narrowband data from dark skies, I could get much more usable data, and when I got home was happy to see good results with just under 10 hours of data.⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ Sh2-129 / OU4 / Flying Bat and Squid Nebulae (HaO3)⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ The red (Ha Signal) is sh2-129, the flying bat nebula. The blue squid nebula (OIII signal) in this image (OU4) was discovered by the French Amateur Astrophotographer Nicolas Outters in 2011. It is very faint. I used a tone mapping process originally described by J-P Metsavainio to bring it out. All the data was collected on my summer road trip to see the total eclipse of the sun.
