The second stop of the Mehrauli walk was the Yogmaya Temple According to Aman our @sairedilli guide for the day, Krishna and Yogmaya were born at the same time. She took his place. Having been brought up on a staple diet of Amar Chitra Kathas, I have this vivid picture of a baby girl being snatched by Kansa, about to be dashed to the ground, who slips out of his hands and flys off. At this temple to make a mannat, you tie a chunni with a genda phool. Below is what I got off Wikipedia: " It is believed that the main idol in the temple was that of Yogamaya, an incarnation of Durga, born as the sister of Krishna. Kansa, cousin of Devaki (mother of Krishna) and uncle of Yogamaya and Kansa attempted to kill Yogamaya on Krishna Janmastami day when Krishna was born. But Yogamaya, who was cleverly substituted for Krishna, vanished after predicting Kansa's death at the hands of her brother Krishna. Another folk legend is that of Mughal Emperor Akbar II's (r. 1806-1837) association with the temple. His wife was distraught at the incarceration and exile of her son Mirza Jehangir who had fired from a Red Fort window at the then British Resident that had resulted in the killing of the bodyguard. Yogamaya had appeared in her dream and the Queen praying for her son's safe return had vowed to place Punkah made of flowers at the Yogmaya temple and in the nearby Muslim shrine of Qutbuddin Bhaktiar Khaki. This practice set since then is continued to this day in the name of Phool Walon Ki Sair, a festival held for three days during October every year. Talaqi darwaza, purana qila This is the northern gate of the fort. It was built by Sher shah suri. Some say it means Forbidden Gate; others think it is the gate of special entry. Paradoxically enough, Talaqi Darwaza means meeting gate. The gate is beautifully adorned with a chattri at it s top most level which must have been embellished with tiles at one point in time. The top storey also shows decoration with delicate medallions at the corners. . . #uniquedelhi Captured by @sukhmani_sangha09 . . #monumentsofdelhi #delhimonuments #delhihistory #delhiheritage #delhi #delhitourism_official #heritagephotography #heritageconservation #theheritagephotographyclub #theculturegully #phonephotography #photographers_of_india #heritagestructures #travelphotography #natgeotravelindia #natgeoyourshot #travel #uniquedelhi #picoftheday #incredibleindia #magicmoments #architecturalphotography #arch

Purana qila baoli, purana qila 🔸 This is perhaps the simplest of all of the baoils of Delhi. It was discovered by British engineers in 1912,while relocating inhabitants of indrapat village which was settled here. When their homes were removed around sher mandal, the engineers found a pit filled with mud and garbage. upon clearing it, they discovered this Baoli. 🔸 The construction of the Baoli is attributed to Sher shah suri based on an inscription on the south gate of the old fort. 🔸 More info on this baoli can be sourced from the book "Baolis" by author Vikramjitsinghrooprai. #delhiheritage #baolisofdelhi #baolis #heritagephotography #delhimonuments #delhihistory #delhiheritage #delhitourism #theheritagephotographyclub #heritagevibes #heritage.hindustan #delhitourism_official #delhiforts #heritagestructures #heritageconservation #heritageofindia #photography #photographers_hub_india #photographers_of_india #uniquedelhi #delhigram #delhiexplorer #indialostandfound #natgeotravelindia #travelmagazine #DiscoverIndiaMagazine #discoverdelhi #heritagearchitecture #socheritage #magicmoments.

Sher mandal, purana qila 🔸 Sher mandal was constructed in the mid 16th-century and was the library of Mughal emperoro Humayun. It was previously believed to have been constructed by Sher shah suri, but has since been ascribed to the Humayun who died there tragically in 1556 after falling down a flight of stairs. 🔸 Unfortunately, entry into the structure itself is closed hence one can only imagine what a royal library would look like. 🔸 It also served as an observatory for the mughal emperor who would spend hours gazing at the stars from it s top. #delhimonuments #monumentsofindia #delhiheritage #delhihistory #stonearchitecture #travelphotography #phonephotography #mobile_photography_collection #magicmoments #mughalarchitecture #theheritagephotographyclub #heritagevibes #heritagearchitecture #arches #architecturephotography #natgeotravelindia #traveltheworld #travellingthroughtheworld #travelcommunity #builtheritage #building #ancienthistory #stories #historytelling #photography #discoverindiamagazine #discovery #indiantourism #indiantravelblogger #indiaphotography

This Sunday after I signed up for a three hour walk with @sairedilli which covered lots of monuments in Mehrauli. I was gobsmacked to see such beautiful architecture amidst all those tiny lanes. We visited ten places and I'm sure there must be more to be seen. And then there are those inside the archeological park as well. Back to a bit of history as told to us by our guide for the day, Aman. . . Mehrauli kabhi ujada nahin. One of the beliefs being that it has the blessings of the Sufi saints. . . After Lal Kot ( Mehrauli ) came Siri made by Alauddin khilji. 8000 mongol heads cut. Third Delhi by Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq. Tughlakabad. Fourth Jahanpanah. The refuge of the world. Fifth. Ferozabad. Ferozeshah Kotla. Cousin of Mohd Bin Tughlaq. Sixth Din-panah. Purana Qila area. Seventh. Shahjahanabad. Jamali kamali was the first Mughal building made. And Zafar Mahal was the last. Both in Mehrauli. The monument in this post is Adham Khan ka maqbara. Dudhiya bhai of Akbar the Great. Maham Anga's son. Because he got his Prime Minister killed, an enraged Akbar order his execution. Octagonal building which was a copy of the Lodhi style. Known as Bhul bhullaiyya locally. I will, over the days, be taking you on a virtual tour of the buildings I saw. #hiddengems #heritage #heritagewalk #architecture #archaeology #monuments #ruins #monumentsofindia #urbanvillage #incredibleindia #delhi #delhitourism #delhiheritage #delhigram #medievalarchitecture #india #merabharatmahaan #history #neverstopexploring #mughals #beautifuldestinations #bestplaces #welovetoexplore #culturetrip #amazingindia #delhidiaries #medievalarchitecture #mehrauli #adhamkhantomb #tombofadhamkhan

#exploringdelhi #Through_Priyas_Lens #nizamuddin . Afreen... . I'm working on projects this week, which means it's time to dip into my Folder of Forgotten Images... the FFI! . Today's find was this one: prayer books neatly stacked against the outer walls of the 14th century tomb of Nizamuddin Auliya, in Delhi. . If you zoom in, you'll spot one book with the word 'Afreen' scrawled across its outside edges. . Was it a bored -and mildly sarcastic-- student rebelling against being made to read the same chapter again...? Or was it a student so overcome by the beauty of the words within that they just had to scribble it out loud? . Depending on whether you look at the Urdu or Arabic translation, I believe 'Afreen' means 'something beautiful', or 'worthy', or 'excellent', or 'trustworthy'. . I'll let you decide which student you'd want to be... . . . #Delhi #India #heritagebuilding #delhihistory #IndianHistory #delhiheritage #Delhitourism #shrine #books #bookstagram #booklover #delhigram #india_gram #delhibloggers #discoverdelhi #indianphotography #indianphotographers #photographers_of_india #visualstorytelling #blackandwhite #bw #blackandwhitephotography

Humayun darwaza, purana qila 🔸 It is one of the three gates of the Fort. The lowest level, which is now closed, was used to acess the lake outside. 🔸 The structure is in quite a ruinous state but one can still imagine it s magificense and sheer strenght owing to the thick rampart walls and number of arches. 🔸 One can still spot some blue tiles on the chattri which at one time would ve adorned a fair bit of the structure. One cant see any other embellishment as such. 🔸 The light and sound show happens here now. #delhimonuments #delhihistory #delhiheritage #delhi #heritagephotography #heritageconservation #indianphotographyclub #indialostandfound #india #theheritagephotographyclub #theculturegully #theheritagevibes #incredibleindia #phonephotography #photography #heritagephotography #uniquedelhi #magicmoments #puranaqila #delhimycity #delhitourism #delhitourism_official #travelphotography #DiscoverIndiaMagazine #discover_indiamagazine #natgeotravelindia #traveller #traveltheworld #travelingram

The Tomb of Adham Khan in Mehrauli, #Delhi. Khan was a general in the court of Mughal Emperor Akbar. He was the younger son of Maham Anga, Akbar's wet nurse. . Adham Khan murdered Akbar’s favourite general Ataga Khan in May 1561 and Akbar immediately ordered his execution by defenestration from the ramparts of the Agra Fort. His mother after mourning her son's death also died and both were buried here. . The tomb was built in 1562 and is believed to be commissioned by Akbar. Unlike the Mughal design of architecture, the tomb resembles Sayyid and Lodhi style architecture and it is said that as the Mughal believed them to be traitors, the design of this tomb was also kept octagonal and in line with the Tombs of the two earlier dynasties. . The monument is also called Bhul Bhulaiya or the Maze. It was during the British rule home to one of the officers who had also removed the grave of Khan. Later Lord Curzon is said to have restored the grave. However, the grave of Mahal is still not visible. . . #Dillimerijaan #SoDelhi #worlderlust #wanderlust #_soidelhi #delhihai #shotononeplus #wahhdelhi #oneplusphotography #delhi_igers #inspiredtraveller #mysimpleclick #saadidilli #dildilli #theindianroute #dfordelhi #delhiwale #streetphotographyindia #streetsofdelhi #delhigram #delhi_igers #OurDelhi #delhihai #Delhiheritage #delhiexplorer #ngtdailyshot #CNTGiveItAShot #India #incredibleindia #lonelyplanetindia

Agrasen ki Baoli (also known as Ugrasen ki Baodi), designated a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1958, is a 60-meter long and 15-meter wide historical step well on Hailey Road, near Connaught Place, Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, India.Although there are no known historical records to prove who built Agrasen ki Baoli, it is believed that it was originally built by the legendary king Agrasen, and the present architecture hints at it being rebuilt in the 13-14th century during the Tughlag period of Delhi Sultanate. #delhi  #agrasenkibaoli  #historyofindia  #history  #baoli  #summer  #chambers  #redsandstone  #incredibleindia  #monuments  #heritage #architecture  #structure  #thrillophilia  #travel  #haunted  #mobilephotography  #photography  #_soi  #_soidelhi  #delhigram  #moodydelhi  #delhidiaries  #delhiites  #dilli  #delhiinpictures  #delhiigers  #delhimonuments  #delhiheritage  #SoDelhi  @thrillophilia

The 1857 War Cemetery of Ghaziabad On May 30th, 1857 the tiny town of Ghaziuddinnagar or Ghaziabad of today wrote itself into annals of Indian Freedom Movement . Because on this day when a band of British soldiers was well on its way from Meerut under the command to Brigadier Archdale Wilson to help the besieged garrison of Delhi, it was stopped dead in its tracks near the banks of Hindon River What had happened was the local militias and villagers had taken up arms and fought off the British forces. This brave stand would have been but a footnote in history but for a ruined war cemetery which still stands as the proof of bravery of the early Indian freedom fighters. The cemetery belongs to those British soldiers who died fighting the list heroes of Ghaziabad. Today finding the cemetery is like finding needle in a haystack. It lies surrounded by scrap yards and garbage disposal centers. Once upon a time it was on brink of extinction but for ASI intervention which atleast built a boundary around it. There are only 3 gravestones left now. I had to search for an hour, get down at multiple metro stations before I could find it. The pleasure of finding it made the sweat and toil worth it. Hope now people will see Ghaziabad in a slightly different light #ghaziabad #ghaziabaddiaries #delhincr #ncrlife #delhiphotography #delhiheritage #citytales #city #talesofthecity #british #cemetery #historic #history #monuments #monument #architecture #culture #war #mutiny #grave

The Mughal Tombs of Ghaziabad Who would have thought that a plain, forgotten village in Ghaziabad which doesn't even have pucci roads would hold architectural/ heritage treasures. But that's what I actually found in th Makanpur Village in Ghaziabad has a medieval graveyard which is overgrown with vegetation. However 3 stunning pavillion tombs still emerge proudly out of overgrowth in the middle. The pavillion or chatri tombs are made out of red sandstone and are in different stages of decay. They also used to have blue tiling but that remains only in the middle one now The ornamentation is absolutely stunning with gorgeous pillar capitals and exquisite jaali work. No one knows for sure who the tombs belong to. They don't find a mention in the ASI Listing even. It is only.due to the efforts of local muslim community that the tombs have been saved. It is the local belief that the tombs belong to the bishti or water carrier who saved Humayun's life in Battle of Chausa against Sher Shah Suri. The story of the bishti is well know but that battle happened near Benares. It is unlikely that a local of that region was buried so far. However what we can surely declare is that the era is definitely Mughal Amrapali society towers behind the tombs. But if you ask me ,the 3 tombs tower over all the surroundings due to sheer beauty and staying power #ghaziabad #ghaziabaddiaries #delhincr #delhi_gram #delhiphotography #delhiheritage #citytales #talesofthecity #talesofyourcity #heritage #heritagephotography #historic #history #monument #monuments #indiagram #instapassport #mughalempire #mughalarchitecture #mughal #islam

Crumbling, outwardly unimpressive, overgrown with thick vegetation, this site in #Delhi's sprawling #Mehrauli Archaeological Park was built in 1280 CE by one of the Delhi Sultanate's most powerful early rulers, Balban (r. 1266-87), as his mausoleum. As is quite apparent, barely anything of the tomb, built of local Delhi quartzite ( #MakeInDelhi), remains standing. So why did we tread through a dense thicket - home to numerous species of bees, mind you - to gaze at... This? The tomb's abject decreptitude and completely nondescript appearance belie its historical significance. Historians believe that it was at this exact site that the *very first* examples of "true" arches used *anywhere* in India, were built. "True" arches would later evolve into a defining trait of the various idioms of #IndoIslamic architecture, as well as the styles they influenced. Earlier structures in the Delhi Sultanate featured corbelled arches, cut radially into stone, shaped to give the *appearance* of an arch - like at Iltutmish's Tomb (1235), or by the large stone screen (1199) that greets you as you approach the Qutb Minar past the Iron Pillar. A "true" arch is an arch that is "formed with a continuous line of wedge-shaped stones" or voissors, with a keystone at its apex to firmly hold them all in place. The principles of a "true" arch ensure that weight is distributed from top to bottom. A "true" arch can hold *significantly* more tensile strength than a corbelled arch, something that's especially important when you need buildings to support vaulted domes (yeap, now you know where this is going). The "true" arch was a common feature in Central Asian architecture - the homeland of the early Delhi Sultans - but was unknown in India prior to the construction of Balban's tomb. Sure, the arches at the tomb don't look impressive, but they did their job. Although little of Balban's tomb remains today - not even his actual tombstone, as we're told - a series of arches remain; unassuming pioneers likely unaware of their legacy. #DelhiHeritage #DelhiHistory #दिल्ली #DelhiTourism #IndianHeritage #IndianArchitecture #महरौली

Mehrauli archaeological park . . 🔸 Mehrauli archaeological park  is an archaeological area spread over 200 acre in Mehrauli, adjacent to the qutub minar. It houses over 100 historically significant monuments. 🔸 It is the only area in Delhi known for 1,000 years of continuous years of occupation, and includes the ruins of Lal kot built by Tomar rajputs  in 1050 AD, making it the oldest extant fort of Delhi, and architectural relics of subsequent period, rule of Khalji dynasty, Tughlaq dynasty, Lodhi dynasty of Delhi Sultanate, Mughal Empire, and the British Raj. #delhi #delhimonuments #delhihistory #delhiheritage #heritagephotography #heritageconservation #theheritagephotographyclub #theheritagevibes #indialostandfound #natgeotravel #phonephotography #photographers_hub_india #indiaundiscovered #indian #incredibleindia #heritagestructures #heritageindia #delhi_gram #delhimycity #mehrauli #shuttersofindia #mobilephotography #arches #historicalbuildings #vibes #picoftheday #photography #travelphotography #indianphotographyclub #architecturephotography

Legend has it that the ruins of Feroz Shah Kotla are home to Djinns, the super natural powers of Islamic mythology. Every Thursday, hundreds of devotees visit the Kotla with letters detailing their problems. They keep the xerox copies of these letters at various places hoping the Djinns would read these letters and solve their problems. These letters can be about anything- property disputes, marriage issues, unemployment etc., Interesting isn't it? Got any problems? Do you know that Feroz Shah Kotla has an Ashokan Pillar from 3rd century? Sultan Feroz has got the pillar from Topra, a village in Haryana , 200kms from Delhi. The pillar was transported in a ship lying on a bed and wrapped in silk. It's amazing to look at the pillar from morethan 2000 years ago with it's script still legible. And interestingly, the village of Topra has passed a resolution in 2011 demanding that the Pillar be returned to it's original location. Read about Feroz Shah Kotla in my blog. I don't know what is about ruins and heritage monuments that make them so interesting. The more ruins the more charming! The more ancient, that much intriguing!  Sometimes, I feel it is because of the stories that are hidden under the layers of ruins! And, Feroz Shah Kotla sure has many stories to tell! #repost @project.dastaan ・・・ This is my India: A Sikh elder and a Maulvi stand in front of the Masjid in Kasba Bhural, east Punjab. 📸 by @photosparsh during our Punjab trip on Dusshera On the penultimate day of our Punjab trip, @travelsofsamwise and @photosparsh reached the small village of Kasba Bhural, tracking the story of Khalid Bashir Khan Rai. To our delight the majority Sikh population had not only preserved the old Sufi shrines in the area but continued to celebrate the festivals and traditions of the Muslim community who fled after the Partition The religious unity that once was commonplace across the Punjab is increasingly under risk due to the rise of communal politics in India. In the past couple weeks, we’ve come across many shrines in these villages that display symbols of different religious groups, side by side - something that’s harder and harder to find in the bigger cities Moments like these pictures reaffirm why it’s important to document and preserve our history. Isa khan's tomb 🔸 Isa Khan Niazi was a Pashtun noble in the courts of Sher Shah Suri and his son Islam Shah Suri, of the Sur dynasty, who fought the Mughal Empire. He died in 1548 but he got this tomb constructed during his own lifetime. 🔸 Though this magnificent tomb lies as a part of the humayun 's tomb complex ,it was built almost 20 years before Humayun 's tomb. 🔸 Nizammudin's dargah lies in the vicinity which might be the reason for the location of this tomb and the others in the area,as it is consodered auspicious to be buried near the grave of a saint. #historyofdelhi #delhimonuments #delhiheritage #delhi #delhimycity #delhitourism_official #heritagephotography #heritagestructures #arches #architecturalphotography #phonephotography #travelphotography #photographer #theheritagephotographyclub #theculturegully #indianphotography #indialostandfound #discoveryindia #discover_india #incredibleindia #discoverdelhi #tombs #natgeo #natgeotravel #travelmagazine #historicalbuildings #city

This is my India: A Sikh elder and a Maulvi stand in front of the Masjid in Kasba Bhural, east Punjab. Taken on Dusshera Day. @travelsofsamwise and I had found ourselves in Kasba Bhural tracking the story of Khalid Bashir Khan Rai, one of our earliest witnesses at @project.dastaan. To our delight the majority Sikh population had not only preserved the old Sufi shrines in the area but continued to celebrate the festivals and traditions of the Muslim community who fled after the Partition. In Picture 2, Kirpan Singh (the elder) shows us a 150+ year old token of the coronation of King Rama, which he received from his mother in law. The religious unity that once was commonplace across the Punjab is increasingly under risk due to the rise of communal politics in India. In the past couple weeks, we’ve come across many shrines in these villages that display symbols of different religious groups, side by side - something that’s harder and harder to find in the bigger cities. Moments like these pictures reaffirm why it’s important to document and preserve our history. Through examining the stories of Partition, we’re trying to piece together the fragments of a broken past, and shed some light on how these divisions continue to tear us apart. 2019: 64 . Delhi Heritage: Top 10 Baolis Vikramjit Singh Rooprai Niyogi Books 2019 Pp - 170 . As the names suggests, this book here is a collection of top 10 Baolis in my city, Delhi. For those of you who do not know what Baolis mean, they are wells or pools constructed for collective use. Also called Stepwells, they cater to various water management techniques. . Here's a brief on what all the book has to offer and why you should buy this one! * The idea of Boalis - what, why and how. From their structure to their built, architectural significance, everything in sync with the climate, the time and space they belonged to * The historical importance of planning and management of issues like water management, issues that are still relevant (in fact, issues which are relevant today more than ever) * The stories these ancient symbols carry, the journey they speak of * And most of all, I guess it is the scientificity, the accuracy and the vision that our ancestors had the gift of, that is to be appreciated most about this book. For it brings to us not just historic places to visit when you're in town, but the reason why they're there at the first place. . And here's why I loved it- I have always been fond of history, for it brings me closer to people, places, events. Closer in terms of knowing why what had happened had happened (idk if I'm making sense, but I hope you guys understand). I've always found myself sneaking in a few minutes of search before I visit any place. I've always found myself strolling through small write ups on stones and marbles, the 'about section' of a place of cultural and historic importance. It is a matter of not just pride that I live in a city so rich in heritage but also of guilt that despite having been born and brought up in the city, I have only heard of these places and not visited them. I thank Niyogi books for reminding me of the value they carry and for motivating me to plan my next outing dedicated to one of these Baolis! . . (Delhi has many more Baolis and the book offers great insight into top 10 of these structures) . Aesthetically pleasing, this book is an essential read for the traveller/historian/explorer in you!

Throwback to last winters when I first visited the Humayun's tomb! I remember feeling the awe due to it s gigantic scale and proportions. It elegantly sat in the midst of the sprawling gardens around it, claiming it s place in history. 🔸 It is considered a precursor to the great Taj mahal built later by Akbar in Agra. . . #monumentsofdelhi #monuments #monumentsofindia #delhimonuments #delhihistory #delhiheritage #delhimycity #delhiexplorer #heritagephotography #heritageconservation #heritage #theheritagephotographyclub #theculturegully #phonephotography #photographers_hub_india
