So many tasty juice bars are popping up! Most of them also serve smoothies. So which is better? Should you juice?! Juice feels refreshing and cleansing. I buy it sometimes too. BUT juice lacks protein and fat. Depending on the produce used, it probably also contains lots of sugar. And lacks the fibre, which we most people fall short in! Solution? Drink a smoothie where the whole fruit is blended in. Or if you have a vitamix, at least you can keep the fibre in your juice :) Check the link in my IG profile for more chat about juicing!

If you are a breastfeeding mom like me, you know you need to hydrate. You also need to eat! Set up hydration stations around your house in ALL of the spaces where you nurse. Leave an apple or pear and MULTIPLE water bottles so you always have what you need close by. If you are anything like me, sometimes even reaching the other side of the couch is too difficult. More cookie baking in our household.🏠 This time I tried a variation of the Super Addictive 'Can't Stop Eating' Little Vegan Cookies (recipe is on www.dietitianmom.com) using sunflower seed butter and all purpose white flour instead of oat flour & cashew nut butter. 🍪🍪🍪 They turned out well, but for best results I recommend still using oat flour in the recipe. In fact, these little cookies were still so tasty that my husband offered to make a fruit salad as a substitute for the church ladies' fellowship brunch today (I was going to bring these cookies) so the cookies could stay in the house! 🤣 Kudos to my kindergartener who helped to portion out the cookie dough shown here. I am prepared for all the “I’m hungry” complaints that are about to happen! Bring it! 🤪 . The teachers here in AZ are holding a walk out (basically a strike) to fight for better funding, pay, and education. So this walk-out means no school until further notice. Strawberry asparagus arugula salad. This one put my kiddos way out of their comfort zone, and that’s why I did it. They helped cut strawberries, prep asparagus, and mix the dressing. They were not loving the balsamic vinegar taste BUT they managed to eat the small amount I gave them on their “try me” plates. On days like today I am grateful for my freezer draw full of cooked baby foods for kade.He is transitioning onto more textured foods now which has been going well. Some of the frozen combinations include: beetroot hummus, lamb and lentil stew, broccoli and cauliflower cheese ( cottage cheese) with gemsquash, salmon and veg mix and chicken, coconut and orange stew potato curry. One of my favorite meals for him at the moment is scrambled egg as I always have eggs in my fridge and I even make it in the microwave if I am really rushed. #weaning #complementaryfeeding #dietitianmom #beprepared

Rise & shine! 🌅 I put together this breakfast oatmeal bowl in less than 5 minutes, with pear slices, chopped dried apricots, raisins, chia seeds & a sprinkle of sunflower seeds on a bed of oatmeal.🍐🍇 My kindergartener is usually not a big fan of oatmeal but she ate this up in the blink of an 👁‍🗨 eye without a single complaint! Tip of the day: Eat when you’re hungry. Stop when you are full. It’s as easy as that. . From a young age we are told to eat everything on our plates or to “eat 3 more bites”. That tells us to ignore our hunger cues. . So maybe you are asking, “how does that philosophy apply to meal prep?” . After years of weighing and measuring food, I realized I was much happier just eating according to my hunger cues. . I’m not training for a fitness competition, therefore I don’t feel the need to count calories or macros. #ijusteat 🙀 . My meal preps keep me on track with healthy eating. I always pick a protein, vegetable, and complex carb source so I know I have a well balanced meal.🤙 . Sometimes I eat only half the meal, sometimes I eat the whole thing with a side of more veggies. Depends on the day and the amount of physical activity I have done or have planned. 💪 at Peoria, Arizona

Well our weekend ended with a trip to the ER on Sunday evening...everyone is fine! Poor Teddy slammed his finger in the car door 😣 but didn’t break anything, luckily. . I’m so grateful for quick and easy school lunches, times like this! . We are just looooving the @annieshomegrown no added sugar yogurts. This one is raspberry strawberry spinach! 😋💪 Also I’d like to point out the dried mango slices in the trail mix...after about 30 times of not wanting any, he finally decided to try it and loved it! Bibimbap! While in Hawaii we visited a small, local restaurant. Where Adam Sandler also happened to be dining! Besides the excitement of a star-sighting, the food was also amazing. I ordered this Bibimbap, which is a trendy Korean dish. My fave part is the egg on top. And also saying “Bibimbap” is fun too :) Have you tried Bibimbap? I’d like to make it at home, anyone have a good recipe

Over the past 13 weeks... . I had 14 days of travel 🛫 An old knee injury flared up 👎🏼 I had some tough days, and some that just SUCKED😑 - it’s called LIFE I made a choice at every meal on how I fueled my body 🥘 I dealt with insomnia 👀 I had to talk and cuss my way through every Cardio Flow workout. I dreaded that f’ing 🤬 workout. I LOVED refeed days I wasn’t perfect and I didn’t want to be because I am not perfect. I am me 💚. I would much rather be REAL. . Life happens and you just roll with the punches. It’s part of the journey and just embrace it. You guys. There will never be a perfect time. You just have to start and then keep going. Don’t quit on yourself because of a rough day, tough week, or crappy month. You just fight for better you. . And guess what? I am really proud with MY results so far. It’s all part of the journey. My body definitely had a shift and yeah I did a little dance when I compared my progress pics. Down 6.5 pounds and 10 inches. My anxiety or I should say lack there of had been minimal - only dealt with a few anxiety/panic attacks since the beginning of the year which is a HUGE win for me. Huge win! Definitely a transformation on the outside as well as the inside. I am totally “obsessed” 💪🏼 and will start round 2 in the next 1-2 weeks! Eeek! So a little unknown fact about me...I know how to squeeze every penny out of a dollar💵 . I love finding great deals and I use coupons, discount codes to my advantage anytime I can. I paid $2.95 for these 5 boxes of cereal. For all FIVE. Kroger had a promotion (today only) that certain Kellogg’s cereals were 0.99 with a coupon you needed to download. And I had coupons for these cereals on top of that. Boom💥. . And Frosted Mini Wheats is a fav! And can be a great as a pre-workout meal! Just make sure to portion out / measure out cereal 🥣- it’s easy to mow down 2-3 servings 😉. Wow...it’s been 13 weeks since my last crossfit session. It was a fantastic and HARD workout. It was awesome and the fact that I kept up with my crossfit family was a bonus. And we have leftovers! 🥨PRETZEL🥨 COATED CHICKEN TENDERS. . • 2 cups pretzel 🥨 twists, crushed into crumbs • 1 tablespoon Ranch dip mix (from 1.0-oz pkg) • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper • 1/3 cup egg, egg substitute or egg whites • 12 boneless skinless chicken breast tenders (12 tenders= about 1-1/4 lbs.) DIRECTIONS •Preheat oven to 400°F. Spray baking sheet with cooking spray; set aside. •Combine pretzel crumbs, dip mix and pepper in resealable food storage bag. Place Egg Beaters in shallow dish. Dip each tender in Egg Beaters, then place in crumb mixture. Shake bag to coat; shake tenders to remove excess. •Place coated tenders on baking sheet. Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until no longer pink in centers (165°F) and browned. Three tenders equals a serving.

I still remember the anxiety I felt when I took D to his allergist visits. At the time, he was suffering from severe eczema and I just wanted him to be comfortable. He was literally scratching 24/7, and the skin on his entire body was just... 😡 🔥 . As a dietitian, I understood food allergies in a clinical setting, but not to the extent of how it affected my son’s eczema. I distinctly remember how reliant I felt and was constantly playing catch up to the doctor’s plans. Had I known some of this basic info, perhaps I would have felt more at ease? Maybe? Maybe not? . Here’s some 411 to anyone who wants to know the difference between skin and blood test. . A SKIN PRICK TEST (SPT) is when a small amount of allergen is applied onto the skin using a small needle to prick the surface. Results are usually available within 30 minutes. 🌱 A positive test is indicated by a wheal (raised itchy area) surrounded by redness (“flare”). It is worthy to note the size of the wheal does not always correlate to a more severe allergy, rather, likely a good indicator of a TRUE food allergy. 🌱 False positive results are also a possibility, meaning the test yielded a positive result, but you may not be truly allergic to the food tested. 🌱 If no reactions observed, then the test is negative and likelihood of an allergy is minimal. . BLOOD TESTS are used to measure the amount of IgE (immunoglobulin E) antibodies that are produced when the immune system overreacts to an allergen. Test results do not determine the severity of a food allergy, but rather, it shows the likelihood of a possible allergy. . In general, no tests are 100% accurate. Yes, false positives are possible but it still provides useful information for an allergist to determine a accurate diagnosis. With this baseline, your allergist can work with you towards food challenges or whatever methods are appropriate. . We have 6 different allergies in my family. It’s a challenge regardless of how many allergies your family has. I’m hoping this series of allergy tidbits can help someone out there. I have never made beetroot from fresh before until now and it’s not even for me it’s for Kade as part of his weaning (we always put so much more effort into things for our kids than ourselves don’t we?) .I usually buy it ready made from woolies and try to avoid the canned versions as they contain quite a bit of sugar. FEEDING THERAPY THURSDAY TIP - VACATION STYLE ☀️ —— Y’all know I love our DIY water/sensory table (instructions via @whatsupmoms) when we are at home. But while away on vacay? I love the natural opportunities to promote sensory play in the natural environment of sandy beaches, coastal grass, and water. I also love seeing how each of my girls interacts with different textures, responds to the sensory input of each, and engages in imaginative play...at their own pace. Each has been SO different on this trip and yet that’s what makes it all the more fascinating to foster their individual progress in. My youngest is much more sensitive to sensory input and yet as many of you know, both of my girls struggle with apprehensive eating. For years now, we have used sensory play as a way to help pique their curiosity in a way that challenges their comfort zone for tactile stimulation AWAY from the table so textures aren’t quite as off-putting AT the table. —— If you’ve never done sensory play at home, embrace spring and summer as a perfect time to start it outside (where you can hose everyone/thing down if needed at the end!). Easy #sheetpan dinner before and after! Prosciutto wrapped pork tenderloin with assorted roasted vegetables. Loose recipe below👇 Today I used sweet potato, radishes, zucchini, and cauliflower, but you can use whatever you like. Veggies were seasoned with olive oil, salt, and pepper. I cut the zucchini a bit larger since it takes less time to cook. Mix about a tbsp each of honey and dijon mustard with about 1/2 tsp each garlic powder, black pepper, rubbed sage, and Italian herb mix. You can really use whatever seasoning you want. The key is the honey and mustard which act like a glue to hold the prosciutto to the pork. This tenderloin was about 1 pound, so you may want to adjust seasonings accordingly if using a larger one. Lay 3 - 4 slices prosciutto slightly overlapping on cutting board. Spread honey mustard mixture over the top. Remove silver skin off the pork and place on prosciutto. Fold prosciutto over pork and place seam side down on baking sheet. Surround with seasoned vegetables. For easy clean up you can line the sheet with parchment paper or foil. Bake at 425° roughly 25 min. The pork should be cooked to 160° - make sure to let it rest before slicing! If any of your veggies are undercooked at this point they can continue cooking while the meat rests. at North Aurora, Illinois

As it gets to the end of the week I lack enthusiasm and inspiration to cook especially if I haven’t planned my meals for the week. There is usually one night of the week I rely on what is in freezer or ready prepared items and it generally is towards the end of the week. I had a real mom day today with the kids testing my patience most of the afternoon while I was at home with them. I got very little work done and before I knew it was bathtime and I hadn’t even thought of dinner . I usually pop dinner in the oven whilst kids are bathing and then Ems eats with us after kade has had his bottle and gone to bed. So tonight I relied on ready made foods: fishcakes from @barthosfishco , cauliflower and broccolli in cheese sauce from @woolworths_sa and creamed spinach from @wearefood_sa . Emily ate all of her food and named all the food items without me prompting her. I take my hat off to all you full time working moms out there who manage to get dinner on the table after a long day. You are amazing!!! I do enjoy cooking and try cook from fresh or from basic ingredients when I can but it’s not always possible so sometimes we rely on ready made foods like I did today. With this crazy weather, the baby and I caught colds. I'd like to say that nutritionists are immune to illness, but I'm just not that fantastic. I've heard that elderberry syrup is good for immune support, and my cousin @taylorkolenda confirmed that by sharing with me that it helps knock her colds out. My friend @_kristen_miller_ had told me about a girl that makes her own (kaciselderberry on Facebook), and I found it at our local health food store. I was super proud of myself for buying local and supporting small business, which of course, made me feel very Pintresty and Instagramy. So I decided to document my cold fighting tea haul, but my life is so dang perfect it ended up on the floor 😭. That stuff was too expensive to waste--I hope table germs are better than mine, because I'm saving this stuff. First you see me being all good-homemakerish and then you see me being, well, me. Kids and I had a little fun with my husband last night and set the table with the puppy’s art project. I call it placemat potpourri. Also I tried frozen chicken breasts in the instant pot. Not the *best* chicken we’ve ever had, but convenient in a pinch. Plus I really, really don’t like handling raw chicken, and the kids like it. 10 minutes for a pound (two breasts) plus salt, pepper, 1/2 cup of water. Natural pressure release adds about another 10 minutes. I feel like it could be better though and the picture didn’t turn out well at all. Will try again and share more if I get it right! I love this tip for picky eaters from pediatric OT @playingwithchanel !! It kept my kiddos happy for a long time today. They typically are good eaters though I can’t get them to eat much at one time. They are both little grazers 🤷🏼‍♀️ I guess they get it from their mama. ・・・ *Electric ⚡️ toothbrush to wake up the mouth before eating! Do you have a kiddo who stuffs mouth? Is a picky eater? Will chew then spit out food? Doesn’t like meat or chewy food? Prefers soft food and soups? Won’t try anything new? Pockets food? Well well... there may be various factors affecting all this but Nora started off with all the above and working on “waking up her mouth” and oral motor exercises have helped tremendously! . . Warming up and stretching our body usually helps us before our run. Eating is the same way. Sometimes you need a little warm up to get those mouth muscles prepared for the main event (i.e eating!) For our LOs eating takes actual work in the beginning. For example, did you know that 1 swallow takes 26 muscles and 6 cranial nerves to coordinate??? 😮 An electric toothbrush and icy cold water is the warm up we do 10-15 minutes before mealtime. For sake of #transparency in my #momlife and #dietitianlife, I just want to show here I have made 3 different meals for my toddler. Before I had kids I would tell parents “don’t become a line cook, your kids will eventually choose to eat the food you make for yourself.” Welp here I am- eating my words (pun intended). It’s tough- I don’t do this all the time. Sometimes I stick to my guns, sometimes they just get a totally separate meal if I’m not up for the fight, and sometimes there’s this. Still a win because both toddlers ate some tofu for the first time, a couple bites of veggies, some pb&j, and pretty much finished their tortellini. Red lentil fingers! These sticks are packed with plant-based protein & iron; perfect for little #babyledweaners to grab onto. Recipe below! 👶🏼 —————— Iron is a big topic when it comes to starting solids. The stores they built up in-utero start to run out and iron must be provided in the diet. Unfortunately, breast milk doesn’t provide enough of this essential nutrient. Because iron from meat is better absorbed than iron in plants, you often hear about giving meat as first foods. So.... what’s a #predominatelyplantbased mom to do!? While we don’t want to diminish the importance of iron, it’s completely possible to get enough without animal products. The key is offering iron-rich foods at every meal along with a source of vitamin C. A little vitamin C can increase absorption of plant-based iron by 4-6x! These fingers contain red lentils, iron-fortified grain cereal and lemon juice for vitamin C. 🍋 ———————— 1️⃣ Cook 1/3 cup red lentils until tender. Drain. 2️⃣ Combine cooked lentils with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and whatever spices you like (not salt!) 🍋 I did turmeric, garlic powder, dash cinnamon and dash paprika. Add in enough iron-fortified cereal to bind together. 3️⃣ Let cool slightly, then shape into fingers. Lightly fry until crispy on all sides in a teeny amount of oil. I served with a few orange slices for extra vit.
