Meet Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, “the historian who’s asking America to rethink the very nature of bigotry — and how to fight it.” Recently I had opportunity to document Professor Kendi at American University. Thank you kindly Dudley Brooks for trusting me and the opportunity. Shot for @washingtonpostmag

[75/365] So, where’s the picture, Pierre? . I had been so busy lately not taking pictures that I ran out of them and didn’t post anything this morning. . So here goes, it’s before midnight and having just arrived home from a day’s shoot: a photo. These people were sitting on the bench in Delft, where I had traveled to so I could spend a fair amount of money in a camera shop on vintage lenses. . Tomorrow hopefully something new. . 📷 Sony A7III / Carl Zeiss Planar T* 1.7/50 . . . . #365photochallenge #365photo #photochallenge #vintagelens #portraits #documentaryphotography #documentaryphotographer #documentaryphoto #withhumans #portraitoftheday #portrait #naturallight #manuallens #portraitmood #portraitphotography #portraitvision #bestvintagelens #bokehphotography #retrophotography #streets_storytelling #streetfinder #life_is_street #streetphotographers #streetsgrammer #dpsp_street #fromstreetswithlove #timeless_streets #streetscene #thestreetphotography #delft

Since August I've been photographing the crews of shrimp boats in Brownsville as the peak season for commercial shrimping in the Gulf of Mexico winds down. Often crews can spend more than 40 days shrimping in the Gulf before returning to unload. Crews rest for a week before heading out again. Crewmember Renaldo McCoy holds onto a box of shrimp Monday Sept. 30, 2019, as the crew of the Hermosa Cruz unloads their catch at the Brownsville Fishing Harbor in Brownsville, Texas. On assignment for @brownsvilleherald. (3) 2019 is the 4th year since I first entered a refugee camp in Davao City. So much has changed here but there are still a lot of familiar faces. This is where roughly 1,000 Lumad individuals live. And when the war in the mountains is at its worst, more would flee and seek refuge here. Because not only do the Lumads struggle to get an education, they also struggle to reclaim peace. I cannot count how many children have shared to me what their schools looked like when soldiers would use it as their camp. Combat boots and camouflage uniforms lying next to armchairs, hammocks hanging just outside the classrooms, long firearms lying around. There are rebels in the mountains. And where there are rebels, there are soldiers. Problem is, the soldiers are using the Lumads as human shields. They intentionally build their camps near if not within the Lumad communities and schools so the rebels would think twice before shooting. And when they speak up, the Lumads are harassed and threatened. Which is why they fled to the city, hoping someone would see their struggle and do something about it. Today, there are 7 classrooms in this refugee camp. Teachers have fled too so for now, they’re teaching here. They teach multi-grade, which means two grade levels at once. Imagine teaching first graders and second graders with two sets of lessons at the same time, in one makeshift classroom. There aren’t enough teachers but there are enough students willing to learn. So no matter the struggle, the Lumads choose to continue. To this day, I can only be grateful for all the nonprofit organizations and church organizations that continuously help the Lumads. I can only be grateful for all the publications that allowed me to tell their story. This is a complex issue I do not know how to solve. But I do know that education plays a vital role and the dream of Lumad children to get educated is something worth supporting.

(2) Recently, 54 Lumad schools built by non-government organizations were ordered to shut down because they’re accused of not complying with the curriculum standards of the Department of Education. The schools, which provide a dormitory for students who live far, were also accused of taking the students away from their parents without parental consent. While education is basic human right, in Lumad communities in the Philippines it has become a privilege. Their simple goal to learn how to write, read, and do math has been tainted with politics. Today, some of the Lumad students are back to walking up to 4 hours each day - one way - just to get to the nearest public school. Crossing rivers and creeks, walking barefoot under the scorching heat, stomach oftentimes empty… an everyday cycle as they hold on to hope that being educated will save the lands their ancestors fought so hard for. Maybe it will, maybe it won’t.

Few days ago, Chris Cooper asked a necessary question I think we should also ask ourselves constantly. “If you could help one topic/person/community, what would it be and why?” Obviously, this question is important. But more than that, it’s also the type of question that brings us back to our purpose in life. Reminds us why we’re doing what we’re doing and what we want to do more of. That said, I’m responding in three parts because there’s just so much to unpack. . (1) The Lumads. The indigenous people in the Philippines. My roots. Who have spent their lives protecting nature - their home. But are now considered internally displaced people. Multinational mining companies backed by the government, which is to say backed by armed military, continuously intrude the country’s mountainous regions. Destroying the Lumads’ home. Destroying nature for massive logs and minerals. I guess it’s safe to say the attack against indigenous people is an attack against nature. For years, these companies have taken advantage of the Lumad’s illiteracy - making them sign papers they couldn’t read in exchange for a few cans of sardines. Papers that say they’re willingly giving their lands away. This illiteracy became a window of opportunity for the greedy. Today’s generation of Lumads want change. They worked hard to build their own schools and thanks to church workers and various non-government organizations, schools were built in their far-flung lands. They’ve seen firsthand what the inability to read and write can do to an indigenous community and they want something different, something better for their children. They know education is key not only to protecting the lands of this country but their tribe as well. But not everything comes easy…

The UNSCHOOLERS photo zines have arrived!! This beautifully printed photo zine (printed by @awesomemerch) is available for $15 a copy. I printed 50 and have 18 preorders so far. Message me to nab one! 👋 all shot on film, which was developed and scanned by @downtowncamera For my new followers: I spent a week in May 2018 photographing the day-to-day life of an unschooling family living in a small Ontario town. Unschooling is similar to homeschooling, except that the learning is completely unstructured. The three children are very enthusiastic about learning and each have their own specific interests. . Forgive me for my selfishness. Your story of innocence has reached the whole city. I heard too. Every time I hear it , tears come out of my eyes. My tears for you are like a drug that frees me from the world. Can I cry for grief and calm down? I have learned the way to calm down.I don't know if you put your hand on my head to calm me down or it's selfish of me to cry and relieve. You're over my head. You're on top of us all. Do you carry the burden of our sin or do we carry you? I am ashamed that you are ashamed of our sin. I know our burden of guilt is heavier than the one we carry, but I also know that you are a better friend to reduce our guilt. Title: My source of comfort, hussein Photographer: @faezehpaeinmahali عنوان: آرام جانم، حسین #photography #everydayiran #instagram #irphotography #photoir #artmobilegraphy #everydayasia #akasimagazine #Documentaryphotography #faezehpaeinmahali #Documentaryphoto #irmobilegraghy #Documentaryphotographer #irmobilegraphy #Documentaryphotographer #mobilephoto #everydayeverywhere #everyday #oneshot #mobilegraphy #1415mobilephotographers #StreetPhotos #StreetPhotoClub #roozdaily #StreetPhotosworldstreets #StreetShot #Irdocumentary #streetphotoiran #golestanmobilephotographer #lenspersia

Book of the week 1/3 Yann Gross / Kitintale When I think of Africa, cheesy landscapes come to mind first. Disneyesque advertising clichés of endless savannahs, populated by lions, elephants and giraffes. Next, I end up with horrible headlines. War and terror, flight and expulsion, land grabbing, mining and climate change. This list could go ahead ... The image of Africa presented to us in the advertising world, the charity industry, and in the Western media is mainly reduced to bad news and transfigured longing pictures. But now and then someone tells a different story, about success and hope. About brave, obstinate, often crazy ideas. And the people behind it, their passion. Yann Gross "Kitintale" is such a story. Named after a suburb of Kampala in Uganda, this work documents a skate park located there. In portraits, landscapes, overviews and details, combined with texts, Yann Gross describes the history and present of the place and its enormous influence on the local youth. In just a few years, skateboarding has become an identity for many of the young people. It defeats the boredom in an environment of poverty. Keeps them away from crime and drugs and offers a perspective in a hopeless situation. In this sense, the work shows what far-reaching influence a small idea can unfold when pursued with passion. Contrary to expectations, some enthusiasts have built the first halfpipe out of nowhere and, over time, the place has become an institution for the locals. "Kitintale" is more of a zine than a book. With its unbound newspaper print in a clear plastic cover with printed title, the design blends perfectly with the imperfection and DIY character of the documented site. Conclusion: a good story, well photographed and excellently translated into a book. Book information: Yann Gross / Kitintale Selfpublished, 2010 48 pages 23,5 x 32 cm @yann.gross
