2 years old and he has never been told to let go of anything. After about a 10 min session he finally sees the picture. I want him to know a reward is coming for letting go instead of a correction. If your dog isnt interest enough in the reward then he probably doesnt have the right amount of drive in the first place #ohiok9 #dogs #dogsofinstagram #k9training  #ipo #k9handler #workingk9 #workingdogs #dogstyle # #dogtraining #dogsofig #puppy # #dogsports #workingdogsofinstagram #doglife #dockdogs #dogtrainingadvice #k9instinct  #dogtrainingtips #dogstagram #dogslove #workingdogsofig #dogtrainer #workingdogbreeds #workingdog #k9 #k9love #ohiodogtrainer #huronohio

Had my 2nd session with @bohdithedood today. To help with his resource guarding, we started off by teaching him how to retrieve and drop different toys on his own. As he gets really good at it, we will start teaching him to retrieve all kinds of objects. That way if he picks up an item he is not supposed to have or that is dangerous, his parents can have a safer and more pleasant way of getting those things from him. Instead of taking something, running away and guarding it, the goal is for Bohdi to happily bring those things and get rewarded for doing so. Also, Since he was motivated enough with just the toys, I didn’t need to use any treats to teach him this.🐶🍪🐾💗 . . . . #goldendoodles #goldendoodlepuppy #goldendoodlepuppies #goldendoodlelove #doodlesofig #poodlesofig #poodlelovers #doodlepuppy #poodlepuppies #poodlepuppy #goldendoodlelove #losangeles #positivereinforcement #dogtraining #forcefree #dogtrainer #dogtrainers #positivetraining #forcefreetraining #pupsofig #puppytraining #obediencetraining #mutts #dogtrainingadvice #dogtrainingtips

Training should be something you do with your dog and not to your dog.

Multi Dog Household Week PT 6🐕 DOOR MANNERS🙌🏻 . . Doorways are another place that it’s important to have systems in place to diffuse any tensions.❗️ . . I mange doors with a heavily reinforced stay. Training a stay at doorways is going to make your life so much easier if you have multiple dogs. 🦴 . . I also suggest teaching your dogs an individualized release cue. So at my house each dog is released by their name. This makes getting different dogs different places much easier for all of the dogs to understand! Check out my IGTV for how to teach your dog and individual release cue! . . 🔸RECALL COMMAND🔸 Most dogs love running around off leash, but before you give your dog their freedom it's vital for their safety that you know they will come back when called, regardless of where they are and what's going on around them. To teach good recall your dog needs to learn that coming back to you is always a good thing, something that will bring them plenty of praises and rewards. Listed below are few points that can be followed to ensure a reliable recall: ▪️Start working on your dog's recall in an enclosed area with high value treats to motivate and reinforce the behaviour. ▪️ Gradually increase the distance and distractions as per your dog's progress. ▪️Use a long line to walk your dog during training. Let them move away from you before using your recall cue, if they ignore you very gently guide them back to you with the long line and reward them once they are with you. This will prevent your dog getting rewarded by the environment for ignoring you! ▪️Praise them with an excited and happy tone and reward them with high value treats when they return without this extra guidance so they build up a really positive association with coming when called. You want your dog to learn that coming back to you straight away is much more rewarding than ignoring you and continuing their fun running around. . . Keep in mind that recall training is an ongoing process, and not a one-off, so keep practising on each walk (and keep heaping on the praise). This is the best way to ensure your dog stays on track and remains consistently good at recall. . . . . For any further guidance or training related queries, kindly drop us a WhatsApp at +91 91365 17051 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #dogsofworld #dogs_of_instagram #dogs #dogsofinstagram #dogsofinsta #dogsofinstaworld #dogsoftheday #malteseofig #malteseofinstagram #maltesepuppy #puppies #puppiesofinstagram #puppyoftheday #dogtrainingadvice #dogtraining #dogtrainingtips #petarchi_india #studentsofpetarchi #srishtipetarchi #delhigram #delhi #delhi_igers #gurugram #gurgaon

How do you train a scared dog that has suffered this much? This pup was found in horrible shape. She was covered in ticks, heart worm positive, and near death. The ticks had sucked so much blood that she required two blood transfusions. To say she was fearful is an understatement. After months of nursing her back to health, her rescuers contacted us to help her work through her fear. We had trained their Great Dane several years ago, so they knew and trusted us. This pup would bolt at any noise or sudden movement. She was a flight risk, to say the least. So, how do you train a dog that’s scared of everything? We trained her just like we train every other dog. We find out what they are in to, and go from there. Most of the dogs we get are in to food, as a reward. This one was not. She did, however, LOVE affection. Petting her, in her mind, was her Paycheck. After we figured this out, we taught her leash pressure. Leash pressure means, when you feel pressure on the leash, move toward it. Every time she would even look in our direction when we gave pressure, we would reward. This girl caught on so fast. In no time at all, we were doing a calm follow walk, on a leash. After she learned this, we started introducing new sounds and movements. When she would try to bolt, we gave leash pressure, while moving backward. When she gave in to the leash pressure and came to us, we would comfort and reward, with our hands. We also added the word yes, which means keep doing what you are doing. Within a few days, every time she would hear something and get scared, she would bolt to us, instead of away. She learned that right beside us was the place of 100% grace and reward. Such a sweet, smart pup. I’m glad she gets a second chance at life. She couldn’t have a better mom and dad. She will live a good, full life. ❤️❤️❤️

Check out our friend Brie working with a client on jumping. No shock collar, no knee to the chest, no shoving, no yelling! Also a great example of thinking outside the box when one method isn't working like it should, without resorting to aversives. Great job! Reposted from @noblewoof (@get_regrann) - Yet ANOTHER reason to do mat training with your dog. Greyson and I had a breakthrough today. This guy is a really fun pup to work with, but he is also VERY quick to become overly aroused which manifests as jumping and grabbing my arms with his mouth. We have been consistent with walking away from him when he does this, and he “somewhat” gets the picture but is still really struggling to resist the urge. Extinction is not enough with this guy, so I decided to change the environment to make it easier for him to make the right choice. When he is actively training with me, he has no problem harnessing his excitement and performing the task at hand. However, I have identified that transitional moments of walking from one destination to the next, is the moment that he is mostly likely to jump up and mouth me. Since Greyson is so good at mat targeting I started using this skill to help him learn how to move forward with me successfully (no jumping or mouthing). This immediately helped him focus despite the very exciting distraction of my movement within nipping range. THIS is our ticket to success and over time we will be able to phase out the mat. He will see me stopping as the cue to lay down and be calm instead of jumping up and mouthing. I am very excited to see him progress with this skill. Stay tuned to watch him excel! 🐾 #dogtraining #dogtrainingtips #dogtrainingisfun #dogtrainers #clickertraining #markertraining #puppytraining #impulsecontrol #smartpuppy #pdxdogtraining #pdxdogtrainer #pdxdogtraining #pdxdogsofinstagram #oregondogtrainer #portlanddogtrainer #noblewoof #rewardbasedtraining #behaviorsciences #animalbehavior #gooddog #forcefreeoregon #walkandtrain #basicmanners #petsbehavingwell #forcefree #ffo #noshocknoprongnochoke #snackleadernotpackleader #youdonthaveto - #regrann

@ruffbeginningsrehab

It’s that time again, holiday get a puppy time! Also, go to the rescue and adopt a dog for the holidays! I think it’s wonderful…or it can be. I never want to discourage anyone from doing that. However, as a trainer and someone who worked in rescues for several years, serious caution and advice is necessary. First off, never do this on a whim. Research the breed or breed mix you are adopting. Know that when you go back to work after the holiday break, the dog is properly covered for exercise, breaks, etc. I could go and talk about SO many avenues of what can go wrong getting a new dog or puppy this time of year, but I will focus on one for the sake of this article and your attention span. Don’t set your dog or puppy up to fail. Thousands of new dog and puppy owners this holiday will be doing one thing that will cripple their new dogs ability to cope in our world…giving your dog too much access to you. Now what do I mean by that? It could be several things. The main thing is you and your family has a lot of free time. You have your puppy in a pen around everybody most of the day or free to roam around with little, if any, crate time. You could be giving your puppy lots of naps, but when they are out you do a lot of holding, snuggling and pets every time you let your puppy out. With your new dog that you got from the rescue or shelter, you show him/her around the house. Get on the floor with the dog or have the dog on the couch. You go for long walks everyday for that week you are off and inside you let the dog be where you are most of the day with the freedom to roam mostly where he/she wants. That cripples your new dog or pup’s ability to be able to function in our world. Even if you work from home, you need to work, you need to take kids to soccer practice, go to the store, etc. Life comes in full swing January 2nd and you have conditioned your dog or puppy to ...to read the rest please click the link in BIO. Instagram only gives me so many words😝

“My dog sits and holds position for their food” - Shane-o (made up name). This is something we hear regularly and granted it’s a good start. BUT... Please be aware of what it is that you’ve achieved. It’s a single and very easy behaviour your dog is doing for 80% of its daily resource, which would equate to doing 2 minutes work and getting a full days pay check. Your dog is very capable and it’s okay to have high expectations of them. Start to increase criteria and add behaviours to this routine. This exercise is never complete and as your dog develops make sure you vary the routine and make it challenging in a new way. Dogs are extremely intelligent, physically capable and great problem solvers; let’s start challenging their capabilities rather than celebrating under achieving dogs that’s are operating far lower than their potential💡 #dogtraining #dogtrainingtips #melbournedogs

Snoop Dog is in the house. he is an adorable Dachshund. Believe it or not this little guy is 9 years old. I’ve never had a guy in for training that age. But we will do our best to help him be in a better emotional and mental state. Mom and dad tell me he barks nonstop in the car. 2 hour drive? 2 hours of barking. He also has some issues with men with hats, pulling on the walk, and being naughty around the house. Stick with us and see what we can accomplish! 🧡🐾 PS - his name actually is Snoopy. I decided to give him a little street cred and call him Snoop Dog.

@thegooddogtraining

. So many get caught in this one dimensional space with dog training. They seem to think they’re simply training commands, and that all ways of achieving that end are of equal value or benefit. . Just use rewards (food, affection, play) for heel, to have the dog sit at thresholds, wait in the crate, to train sit/down/place/recall etc. “Better to teach them what you want than what you don’t” goes the popular saying. Sounds good. And with some dogs, it IS good. But for many dogs, it’s the opposite. Because while you think you’re simply teaching a behavior, you don’t realize you’re simultaneously teaching your dog...you. . What do I mean? I mean that if we’re going to give dogs the credit that they’re sensitive, tuned-in, connected, and relationship-driven creatures, we would be naive to assume that all dogs, all people, and thus all relationships will be exactly the same, only requiring a cookie-cutter approach to succeed. . That’s what I mean by one dimensional training. It’s like saying you have three kids, and because they’re all kids—capable of learning, understanding, following directions, building relationships etc., that you can use the same approach with all three and get the same results. Any honest parent will tell you that in a multi-child household the approach HAD to be multi-dimensional to be effective for each child. Some kids are easy, desperate to please and follow the rules, some are a bit less so, and some are can be seriously unruly pains. . And yet, we seek to put dogs in this simple training box. “We just need show them what we want and that will naturally lead to a happy, healthy, mutually respectful relationship.” Really? Just teaching what you want, and rewarding it; being a constantly soft, sweet dispenser of all things “nice” will lead to mutual respect? No negative consequences or true accountability needed? For all dogs? For all time? . Sounds great. And it sounds like a tremendously superficial, and delusional appraisal of the situation. . Here’s the point. I’m not saying NOT to do anything, and I’m not saying TO do anything, what I AM saying is to be tuned-in and aware. To stand back a bit from accepted “wisdom” and... CONT BELOW 👇

@bellethecolliefox continues to make #progress and surprise me with new stuff each solo session we have 🐕 . . I got the heads up she might not be feeling her best prior to our most recent one, and she did seem like she was a little #meh 😔 . . This entrance, she didn’t hide in the kitchen or chill on the sofa, but rather she went into the bedroom behind her gate 🛌 . . This might seem like an adverse reaction, but I actually took it as a good thing! We’re teaching #Belle to rest comfortably behind the gate when guests come over because it’s a safe space, so the #magic is taking hold if she’s using it as intended ✨ . . Of course, I had a job to do so I was careful not to burst the safety bubble with too much attention, but she took treats through the gate, occasionally poked her head out to grab them if I made myself scarce, and.... 😯 . . She came out from hiding in the shadows to sit on her #place 🙌 . . This was another big step as we teach her place is also a safe spot in the company of #strangers 👍 . . Once she was on place, she stayed on place too! No hiding behind the bed again, no running for her spot by the door while the gate was open 😊 . . This is the power of #positiveassociation 💪 . . Instill safe spots, teach them good things happen there, and give them lots of goodies while slowly introducing their #scaries and you’ll have a #pupper who’s more relaxed and trusting of your ability to keep them below #threshold 🎉 . . She was still avoidant of the leash, but I’m excited for our next solo coming up to see what new tricks Belle has up her sleeve 😉 . . Once I get that leash on and get her out, we’ll be in a much better position to introduce her to a full time walker but we’re going with her comfortable pace for now 🐶 . . #dogtrainer #dogtraining #forcefreetraining #positivereinforcement #cuteandcomplicatedclub #gonzodognyc

Puppy Ruby 😍 . Raising a puppy takes a lot of work! Especially when you have a very independent and headstrong breed 😄. . I had to get over a lot of humps with Ruby. She taught me a lot while doing so. I had to gain her trust when we first got her. . . I specifically picked the most back of the pack (submissive) puppy in the litter—which was her. She was born and raised outside on the farm and had little interaction with people. So she was pretty frightened when we brought her home. . . Actually, when we went to pick her up, she was all the way in the corner hiding. (The parents and all the pups were in a large fenced in area on the farm). The farmer and I had to corner her so we could grab her. . . And when we finally got her she cried, and cried. But it was all okay, because we were gonna help her get through it, and show her that there’s nothing to be afraid of. . . Along with this, we had some fear issues when we brought her home. It was to be expected. Whenever we would pick her up, she would pee on the floor because she was scared. . . This was one lesson she taught me; how to approach a dog. It’s very intimidating if you approach them head on while you are looking at them. That’s exactly what a dog would do if they were gonna challenge another dog. . . So I learned to not give eye contact and approach with my back facing her. This is how I gained her trust. I didn’t keep doing the same thing that was making her scared— instead I changed because I understood how she felt. But I still made her get over her fear. . . I am still working on a couple things that creates that fear in Ruby. She will always be a back of the pack dog, will always be submissive and more weary of things than most dogs. . . However, she won’t always be fearful, because I will continue to help her get through those obstacles the best way I know how. By facing them. . . If you never face your fear, how will you ever get over it? . . #anatolianshepherd #dog #dogs #dogpsychology #dogtraining #dogtrainingtips #dogtrainingadvice #dogbehavior #dogsofinstagram #dogsofinsta #anatolianshepherddog #anatolianshepherdsofinstagram #puppy #puppylife

If you follow me, you know how much I talk about the “little” moments, and how they either stack for, or against you. In this clip Shelby, one of our head trainers at TGD New Orleans, walks you through 3 permission-based exercises that, if done correctly, should remove excess excitement, build impulse control, and also develop handler focus/respect. . Shelby is using an e-collar with Duke, but you can apply these same concepts with a prong collar, or other training collar as well. The primary goal is to cause the dog to be aware and present, and think about their actions, rather than just cruise through on excitement autopilot. . P.S. Duke is a bit of a nervous Nellie, as well as an edgy kind of guy in general, so you’ll see some wide eyes in the crate (which is where he’s had two bites), and some other peculiar body language (lots of nervous scanning on the walk, and overly large reactions to low corrections).

Little Masha builds confidence through training (in this case the place command). The best time to start training with your dog is the moment you bring them home. Don’t wait. Don’t give them time to “settle in”. In households with cats when a new dog arrives, do you think the cat is thinking “Well let’s give him about a week to settle in before I correct him for things I don’t like.”? No! If the dog is too pushy with the cat, the cat sets boundaries immediately (typically by hissing, staring or taking a swipe at the dog) . Do you think the dog’s feelings get hurt? No! It learns what the boundaries are right then and there. A lot of problems in terms of bad behavior with dogs could be prevented if owners set the boundaries right away. If owners started training with the dog right away. Too many times owners feel bad for their dog because they perceive that the dog must have been treated poorly if it came from a shelter or rescue. Just because the dog is in a shelter or came from a rescue does not mean it was treated poorly or abused. In most cases it was not abused, it just wasn’t properly trained by its previous owners and when its behaviors got unbearable, rather than address the behaviors they rehomed the dog. Little Masha is nervous and fearful of many things. She has never been abused, in fact quite the contrary. Her owner got her at 8 weeks old and has been dedicated to helping build her confidence. Just like people, dogs have different types of personalities. Some are more outgoing, some are more reserved, some are nervous, some have anxiety issues, some are shy, some are pushy, bratty and very assertive. It’s not so much what their personality is to start with as much as it is, do you know what to do with that personality type to help them get into a better state of mind. And the best way to help all of them is through structure, guidance, boundaries, and training. It both builds confidence and helps you gain control of the more assertive types. #trainyourdog #confidence #buildit #dogtraining #dogtrainingadvice #dogtrainingtips #dogtrainingvideo #dogtraining101 #dogtrainingpaysoff #dogs #dogsofinsta #instadog #instadogs #doglife #dogtrainerslife

Photos of milo at hospital the other day, he’s such a good boy Tbf. He’s a different dog when not vested but Idc about that because he behaves and is impeccable when he’s working, just like most humans. Had a terrible appointment and the doctor didn’t understand my medical conditions and made us leave so Milo helped me and stopped me hurting myself with my tics, then gave me DPT the whole journey home and comforted me❤️ #assistancedog #assistancedogintraining #adit #dogtraining #obediencetraining #dogobedience #goldie #golden #goldiesworld #goldenretriever #goldenretrieveruk #mobiltyassistancedog #positivereinforcement #hodgkinslymohoma #dogtrainer #lfl #f4f #likeforlikes #dogstagram #dogtrainingtips #workingdog #servicedog #balancedtraining #dogs #dogtraining #hodgkinslymphoma #tourettes #balancedtrainer #goldensofinstagram

Puppy tip 28 of 50! Know when to give affection and when to refrain. This is something many people give zero thought to, not because they don't care, but they are simply unaware. If nobody has brought this to your attention in the past, allow me to be the first to shed some light on this concept. For many of us, petting our dogs is something we do automatically—we don't even think about it! But we need to reprogram our minds. We need to view affection as a positive consequence, a potential reinforcement for whatever the dog is doing or feeling at that moment. It is particularly easy to fall victim to inadvertant reinforcement when we see our dogs are stressed. Naturally, we want to soothe them, much like a child. But in the canine world there exists no form of soothing. The closest thing to soothing would be displaying confidence and leadership. Giving affection in these times CANNOT remedy the situation. It CAN however, reinforce the behavior, meaning the dog will become more and more likely to exhibit that behavior in the future, and faster. Since many of us pet our dogs to soothe our own stress, we can easily share that bad energy with our dog. Be conscious of exactly how you are feeling, behaving, and how your dog is feeling and behaving before mindlessly stroking. This is one nearly effortless way to shape behavior. No, you can't train using only affection, but it can drastically alter your dog's state of mind and behavior over the long term. It's very easy to pet our puppies when they are over excited about something. This will set you back in the long. Try not to pet your pup when they are overly excited, especially if they are whining, jumping, or barking. Instead get into the habit of evaluating your pup each time you share affection. Pet them when they appear to be in a good state of mind, and keep your petting calm and relaxing. This will help lower blood pressure for both of you! Learn to evaluate body language—really big eyes, sealed mouth, lifted, forward ears—all potentially indicate arousal. Wait for your dog to soften up, even just a little, before sharing affection. I also highly recommend calm massage for very intense puppies.

I give you: A video of Honey discovering our home camera. A bit of background: I have been leaving the dogs alone together for short periods of time while I do things closed away in another room and then keeping an eye on them using the camera while I do so. I'm doing this because I want to ultimately be able to trust the girls alone in the future and it's better to start now to incorporate it as our normal routine. Well, this is what happened when I checked in on them one day and Honey heard the camera move. 😂 . . . . . #puppylove #puppytraining #dogtraining #goldenretrieverpuppies #goldenretrieversofinstagram #goldenretrievers #goldenretrieverlove #goldenretrieverpuppy #goldenretriever #dogsofinstagram #dogtrainingadvice #dogtrainingtips #dogtrainer #dogbehaviourist #dogbehavior #dogbehaviorist #dogbehaviour #cute #puppy #cutepuppy #puppies #puppiesofinstagram

If you’re training your 🐕 to do something 🆕 and they stop making progress, you may have increased the difficulty too quickly. Just refresh your dog’s memory by making the skill a little easier for a few repetitions.⠀ ⠀ #dogtrainingtips #puppytrainingtips #puppytraining #dogtraining #positivedogtraining #dogoapp #dogotraining #trainingtips #ilovemydog #funnydog #adorablepup #weekenddog #saturdaydog #saturdaypuppy #puppiesofinstagram

Emma and her owners had a field trip at Lowe’s today. They all did such a great job, and seeing her 10 year old human walk her for the first time really made my day!

Puppy tip 27 of 50! Enroll your puppy in a structured puppy class. This, of course, is not a necessity, but for the average dog owner it can be a wealth of information. Most puppy classes out there, you will sign up, show up, learn how to teach your dog one new command each week, and then the puppies get to play, but it's a total free for all. The problem with this is that sometimes puppies are getting bullied, and some puppies are bullying. In both cases the dogs could grow up with lasting negative effects, and you're baffled—everything seemingly going to plan. It can also be very difficult to get your questions answered or to get real solutions to any issues you're experiencing with your pup. Make sure you choose a balanced trainer who is happy to take the time to talk to you. Of course if you live in southern Maine, you're in luck. Our next puppy class begins January 2nd in Saco, ME. #dogs #dogsofinstagram #dogtrainer #dogtrainerslife #dogtraining #dogtrainingtips #dogtraining101 #dogtrainingadvice #balancedtraining #DiamondK9 #Diamondk9clarity #leadyourdog #trainingisfreedom #mainedogs #dogsofmaine #truedogstory #accountabilityiscompassion #dog #dogtrainer #dogtraining #dogtrainingtips #dogtraining101 #dogtrainingadvice #balancedtraining #DiamondK9 #leadyourdog #trainingisfreedom #dogaggression #nervousdog #anxiousdog #dogbite #stopdogbiting #bonker #correctyourdog #ecollardogs #calmdog #gooddog #dogobedience #happydog

@venus.and.mars.k9.pdx

Remote feeder behind Mars + object target to counter-act creeping in the down out of motion and position changes. Mars doesn’t have a fold-back down, and I didn’t want to bother with that, but this set-up has had some pretty cool effects so far. Skills worked in this entire session: Robot marker recognition, targeting, front (enthusiasm, position, and recognizing my dropped chin cue), cue discresion/eliminating anticipation, and positions (down and stand out of motion, sit from down, stand from down, down from stand, down from sit, stand from sit). We’ll go back to practicing heelwork eventually. 🙄 These sessions mostly came to be because I wanted to add a hand signal for sit from down, since I didn’t realize you could do hand and voice (and that I should) until we were already close to trialing for Open last summer.

I can't tell you how proud and happy I am of this girl! We've been learning how to be calm and relaxed on our walks, not jumping on people and improving our approach with other dogs. I have to say, so far, so good! Even when there's dogs and fireworks around us we keep focused 💛 I really love my job, and this lovely moments! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #nature #dogs #puppy #dogtrainer #londondogs #dogsofinstagram #doglife #bestwoof #goodboy #imdt #positivereinforcement #dailydog #instagood #happy #beautifulday #happydog #picoftheday #positivedogtraining #instadaily #dog #dogtrainingtips #photography #sun #bestoftheday #photo #instapic #lifestyle #positivetraining #doglovers
